94.9/The Bull kicks out Tim Michaels as mid-day host as part of a nationwide cutback

Tough to be a mid-day host at a country station in Atlanta.
Just a week after Sari Rose lost her mid-day job at Kicks 101.5 so Cumulus could place Q100’s Bert Show host Jenn Hobby in her place, mid-day host Tim Michaels has been canned from Clear Channel’s 94.9/The Bull as part of sizable nationwide layoffs. His name has been wiped from the front page of the Bull website.
Michaels was there for about a year. Before that, he worked at Kicks 101.5, where he hosted the late afternoon shift for a time.
Madison Reeves is doing mid-days today for the Bull, which debuted in late 2006.
In ratings this year, Kicks 101.5 and 94.9/The Bull are neck and neck.
In better news, former 99X and Dave FM host Steve Craig will be joining 97.1/The River as a fill-in host and programming person. Hopefully, this will lead to a full-time gig. The River currently goes jockless during the mid-days.

The River could be a good fit for the Retroplex if Steve could bring it back. Even if not, I’ve heard him spin classic rock before on that station in NYC…but met thinks his cup of tea is classic alternative/new wave/punk. Have they played any Ramones on the River?

Satellite radio is the way to go; listen to what you want to listen to, when you want to listen to it. If you have eclectic tastes in music, it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Atlanta radio is the worst in the country right now. I travel the entire east coast and it is an embarrassment just to try and find something to listen to. My favorite station was 106.7. They played an excellent mix of tunes for my generation.

People have tastes and perception, which, if a programmer or DJ is left to pick the songs they want to hear, or, just want to play, winds up in a wonderful mesh of music full of the DJ’s personality. Think of Dr. Demento’s old show or listen to WMLB-AM or WRFG-FM, where a real person chooses the tunes and how the tunes fit together. Can satellite radio do that?

Actually, Sirius-XM does have that, within the genres. It does have a bit of the old-time radio concept to it.

I listened to old fashioned radio for about a minute the other day…..by mistake. As soon as I got my coffee situated, I was back on Sirius. I live in LaGrange, and the local radio sux big green donkey d**ks.

Bring back Dave FM and add a second NPR station to cover the programming that is not covered.The only good addition is 92.3 24/7 comedy. However, it is repitious as well. Like SirusXM, too many commercials.

I’m with floydthebarber on this one. There is NO decent ROCK station in the Atlanta market. Sirius/XM might be good for some but I still cannot see myself paying for radio. Fortunately, my car stereo has a USB port…

Nothing to listen to since the project is gone. 98.9 is a good station, but the signal is too weak to make it bearable most of the time, Atlanta radio is dead if you like rock and roll.

Here Here regarding Stonehenge and WRFG. If classic rock radio was like Stonehegnge it would survive because the listener is not subject to the same 200 recycled songs. In the mornings I may listen to a bit of the Regular Guys, but 90% of my radio time is spent listening to Good Morning Blues on 89.3/WRFG. Each DJ picks his own music and it makes for an interesting musical ride. In the evening there is a variety of music on 91.1 88.5 and WRFG. The mainstream stations are hopelessly lost.

Who ARE these people? Lived in Atlanta all of my life. (I won’t bore you with my favorite DJ’s of days gone by, now referred to as “On Air Talent”.)
I am a 59-year old male – and graduated middle school. I have scanned the local AM/FM bands and cannot find a music station that I would enjoy listening to for more than 2 weeks. I like “Oldies” (oh, how I hate that term), but am looking for new music. If it weren’t for Sirius/XM, I would have gone insane long ago. Any ideas, guys?

I don’t remember a time when Atlanta radio has been this awful. Scanning the channels, it seems the only stations that I end up listening to are non-commercial. It’s as if they’re actually trying to kill commercial radio in Atlanta.

Hey, great! Another opportunity for me to tell everyone how great satellite radio is! Did ya hear? Satellite radio is here! It’s great. Really. Seriously. You should get one. Everybody should. Then you can listen to other hacky DJs playing the same songs anywhere in the country and not have to listen to Atlanta’s hacky DJs and songs.

Some great comments here. Looks like most of us agree that Atlanta radio has gotten horrible. What market are they shooting for now? It is always nice to travel out of the area or state as there are very good stations everywhere but here. Sitting in Atlanta traffic is made much worse by our lack of good radio.

Why DID Jenn Hobby leave The Bert Show? I’m not buying the spin. She said today she needed to “learn how to work the board.” Um…doesn’t she start on MONDAY? Why did Bert upstage her departure with his alcohol announcement? (Soon to be followed by “as it turns out, I was simply self-medicating.”) Why did Jenn thank Kristin toward the middle/end of her list of TBS members in her letter? Shouldn’t she have been up there w/Bert, Jeff and Tracey? Why did Bert comment on her “little eyes” in his letter? See why there is some confusion about this change, Rodney?

And let me guess. These laid-off folks had to sign a non-compete clause with the corporate piggies… which means they won’t be able to work in the Atlanta market for some predetermined time by said piggies. Corporates should not be allowed to own radio outlets. Period.

Atlanta radio is like Atlanta sports. There is no “identity” or “soul”. Most of the folks who live in Atlanta are from somewhere else. Their loyalties are “back home” in New York or Chicago or Boston. Atlanta has yet to establish itself as a brand (like the Big Easy or the Big Apple). Atlanta’s terrible radio does little to help.

Anybody going to make a comment about Tim. I followed him to the BULL when KICKS let him go. He will be missed. He is a good listener, does his homework, and keeps his conversations upbeat.

I’m with Barbara. I switched to The Bull when Tim was kicked out of KICKS. I enjoyed his midday show. And I don’t know what stations you people are listening to, but The Bull has very little talk in during the day (work hours). They play a ton of music, but I guess you have to like country music to listen. They often play 18 songs in a row with no commercials. The station my daughter listens to in the car drives me absolutely insane. They obviously have a loop because you hear the 8-10 songs every 90 minutes. AWFUL. Anyway, Tim will be missed.
