The Bulldogs/Crimson Tide SEC Championship: how local radio stations are handling the big game

The excitement is building towards the big SEC championship game at the Georgia Dome Saturday and the local sports talk stations are jockeying to position themselves as the place to go to talk Dawgs.

“I’ve been doing sports radio since 1995 and this is by far the biggest week ever,” said John Kincade, early afternoon host on 680/The Fan who also does work for ESPN Radio. “It’s been 30 years since Georgia ever went into a game knowing if they win two games, they have a national championship. It’s three decades in the making.”

Better yet, his co-host Buck Belue is living history as the quarterback of the last Bulldogs football team to win the national championship in 1980. “It’s stirring up some great memories,” Belue said.

Kincade marvels over how gracious and humble Belue is about his role, always saying it was the whole team’s credit. “I admire how low key he is,” he said. “If I had a national championship ring, I’d make a grill out of it!”

Here’s a quick summary of how each station is handling the big game:

- The long-time home of the Bulldogs is AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB. The station will begin coverage at noon for four hours of pre-game coverage, followed by the game at 4 p.m. There will be three more hours of coverage after the game is over. Condace Pressley, assistant program director, said Clark Howard is hosting his “Clark’s Christmas Kids” promotion to give Christmas presents to foster kids airs Saturday morning before game-day coverage. On Sunday, if the Bulldogs win, Tony Schiavone will host a two-hour show from 10 a.m. to noon.

- The newcomers at 92.9/The Game, which debuted on Oct. 24, are trying to cater to both Georgia and Alabama fans. “We’re in Athens. We’re in Tuscaloosa. We’re all over the place,” said new program director Terry Foxx. “We’re excited to cover both sides.” Kordell Stewart, Carl Dukes and Rachel Baribeau will host their afternoon show today from the SEC Fan Fest at the Georgia World Congress Center. The Game will air its weekly college football show from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, led by Mac McDonald. If Georgia wins, they are planning to host a big Georgia pep rally. “I would love to see Mark Richt get a national championship,” said Jamie Dukes, mid-day host and former Falcon. “Just getting this would be fantastic in my mind.”

- 790/The Zone has an affiliation with CBS-TV, which will be airing the game. On Saturday morning, the station will be airing live from Centennial Olympic Park. From 1 to 4 p.m., the station will be at SEC Fan Fest. Steak Shapiro, Chris Dimino and Nick Cellini, the regular morning show, will be doing a pre-show on CBS TV. On radio, Shapiro and Cellini will host a local pre-game before the national pre-game at 3 p.m. Dimino will work from the Dome. D.J. Shockley, a former Dogs quarterback, will be on the mid-day show today from noon to 2 p.m. Among the Saturday participants will be Herschel Walker, a Georgia Heisman Trophy winner; former Georgia wide receiver  Hines Ward; and John Parker Wilson, a former Alabama quarterback.

-680/The Fan (also at 93.7 FM) will also carry the game as the official sports talk station of the Bulldogs. On Thursday night, they held a pep rally at Twin Peaks in Buckhead with plenty of Georgia football alum. Like the other stations, they will be at SEC Fan Fest, but willl also host a private event for VIPs at Centennial Olympic Park sponsored by Budweiser. On Saturday, Belue will host a college football show from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by more coverage from the Fan Fest from 1 to 3 p.m. with “Hometeam” Brandon Leak and Carlos Medina. Radio network IMG will do pre-game 3 to 5 p.m. as well as handle post-game coverage.

All the SEC coverage you’d ever want is here.

Coach Saban and The Crimson Tide are going to “violate” UGA so badly tomorrow that the entire Alabama Football Program will have to collectively register as a sex offender on Monday morning, just as if the program was part of Penn State.

ROLE, TIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark Richt is going to get so little penetration tomorrow night that the coach is going to think he is back at his high school prom.

…John “Park” Wilson – c’mon, Rodney at least get the name correct if you are going to write about sports – John “Parker” Wilson was an AL QB and a former Falcon QB –

I bet if one of the Real Ho’s of Atlanta was involved you would get her name right…

You Have NOTHING to do with Coach Bryant

Son of Bear, you have nothing to do with what Coach Bryant taught, which was respect and good sportsmanship. Your comments are not fit for publication, in that they are inherently gross and not the least bit funny. There is nothing funny about rape or violation, or what happened at Penn State. And if you WERE a Bama fan, maybe you’d know that it is ROLL TIDE, not ROLE TIDE. Have some common decency about yourself. I knew Coach Bryant, and he would not claim you as his anything.

I just hope the Dogs offense plays better than the Falcons O last night. Ryan should forfeit his paycheck for that game and the defense squad should all get bonuses.

I have known of people getting admonished and even kicked off here for lots less than what ***Son of Bear**** has said. Seems to be a double standard. His comments are over the line.

Rodney, can you shed any insight into what appears to be The Zone’s (re)acquisition of ESPN and/or NBC radio in their non-live and local hours.
The Zone seems to have been with yahoo or foxsports radio for several years, but I have heard ESPN in recent days. Any news on what’s going on?

Thanks…I guess I should pay closer attention to your blog…
Anyways, just for another opinion…I have been a Zone devotee for 12+ years, and while I love Mayhem and Arch&Bell, the Red Zone does nothing for me. But I am not a big fan of Cowherd either…
680 and 92.9 are terrible….
Just one man’s opinion…I guess we’ll see how the ratings shake out

@ The Dude … I was a fan of 790 myself until they dumped the Stews. I think that was NOT right. Anyway, give 92.9 The Game as try … they are much more diverse and very good, in my opinion. However, if you like Mike Bell, that racist, sexist, sophormoric idiot, you probably will not like 92.9. How Mike Bell keeps a job is beyond me.

buck, you better be thanking the good lord you had hershel to turn around and give the ball to in 1980, or today my guess is today you would be greeting people at the door of the valdosta wal-mart

@ C…..How is Mike Bell a racist? That’s quite the accusation. On second thought the word “racist” is used so much these days it’s a bit watered down….Still curious why Mike Bell is a racist….

it appears that if someone disagrees with your opinion, you are branded a racist. how convenient. I guess the liberals outlawed thinking for yourself and having your own opinion that differs from democrats. I love these stupid black women yelling RACISM when someone objects to their moniker “Proud Progressive Black Woman” aka RACIST, Chip on shoulder Black Woman. The STEWS were racist hoods that catered to the “sharp as a pancake crowd” and were unprofessional. Unless you spoke ebonics, listening to chalk board scratches were more pleasant. Steak Shapiro is a nut job and he insults people that disagree with his opinions. Again- liberal trait. Guess dictators in Arab lands are Democrats since no one there is allowed to think for themselves or have a differing opinion. Dimino is a run on sentence man. Can’t tell when one ends and another starts. 790 is TRASH! They need Ferrell, Renshaw and Arnie back- the ESPN line up was good- you had Pete Rose talking baseball. Though the Sports blob babe was nothing but a fat cheerleader for the red sox. BTW media-stop telling fans to come out and support the teams all the time. Some of us have to pay mortgages and don’t care to spend $200-400 on a sports event. That is why they invented TV. THEY pay the freight and we respond with ratings and purchasing of the advertisers products.

“Did Kincaid get canned by ESPN? No JK show this morning…”

My guess it had something to do with the ESPN move to 790. Anyway, Kincaid is horrible when he tries to pull off a show as the lone ranger. Buck mellows him out and he is tolerable with that f2-man format. In fairness, pulling off a 1-man sports talk show is very difficult….with Cowherd about the only one of significance. Even D Patrick has his band of nitwits to keep the show propped up.

Might be able to answer the question above…

Tip Line Exclusive: John Kincade Moving to CBS Sports Radio for 3-6pm Daily Show

Personally, I think Kincaid is better on his Sunday morning show then with Buck. His Sunday show is very direct sports show while with Buck he is too clownish and over the top. just my 2 cents worth.
BTW, who was the ATL sports talk person that asked Richt the poorly timed questions after the game?

andy, that was Chuck Oliver from 680. I want to why the AJC is not reporting on this at all. Also I don’t know how 680 who is affiliated with UGA cannot fire him over this. I know me & other Dawgs are considering not listening to them any longer if they don’t fire him!

rarely do we ever hear anyone in the Atlanta media actually confront coaches in this town and of course the 1st time Oliver does it was on a topic that wasn’t valid relating to the game just played. I thought this was not only way out of line but a completely unfair attack considering well Murray played. Final play was just an outstanding defensive effort by the bama player that tipped the ball.
