THE X FACTOR: TOP 8: Emblem3 performs live on THE X FACTOR, Wednesday, November 28 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Ray Mickshaw / FOX.
Here’s the holding spot for tonight’s live “X Factor” top 8 performance recap.
Stretching eight performances over two hours? Unfortunately, that’s what viewers watching live had to suffer through. At least the performances were longer, giving us closer to a full song, though it also meant longer intros and longer judges’ comments. (One of the Fifth Harmony’s grandfather died!)
CeCe Frey is a goner, as Simon Cowell said. I think Fifth Harmony is out, too.
Paige Thomas surprised me with a decent performance that may have saved her for a week. But as usual, my favorite by far is Carly Rose Sonenclar. She is a star, pure and simple.
1) Diamond White (”I Wanna Dance With Somebody” Whitney Houston/ Britney’s team) – For some reason, this song exposed Diamond’s vocals as not quite ready for stardom. Somehow, she missed the joyous nature of Whitney’s original rendering while adding nothing terribly interesting to the song despite some efforts to throw in a few vocal tricks. It was merely okay. “I give you an A effort, and B for executive,” L.A. Reid said. “With uptempo songs, I’d like to see more form you,” Demi said. Simon liked her more. Grade: B
2) Vino Alan (”You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” Righteous Brothers/ L.A.’s team) – He changed songs at the last second. Uh oh. L.A. wants goosebumps. This is not it. Terrible song choice for him. I really want something more more modern for him, something with more edge. He does try to inject a bit of himself, his inflection of white soul, toward the end. The second half was much better than the first. “It’s the same thing each week with you,” Britney says. “You have a lot of soul in your voice but I wasn’t totally entertained,” Demi says. “It just didn’t work,” Simon says. “It was uncomfortable.” Grade: B/B-plus
3) Paige Thomas (”Never Gonna Give You Up” Rick Astley/ Demi’s team) – I have had a hard time liking her, even when Demi tries to make her vulnerable. For the first time, I actually liked her giving this pop nugget a little slinky sultriness. They didn’t dress her up in a ridiculous outfit and add 500 dancers (only a nine for the final 30 seconds). It worked. She’s still not going to win this competition and I doubt we’ll ever hear from her again. “That was by far your best performance yet,” L.A. Reid says. “You found your voice. You felt comfortable. Demi, you got it right.” Simon: “This is the first time you look like a legitimate pop star.” Grade: B-plus/A-minus
4) Fifth Harmony (”Stronger” Kelly Clarkson/ Simon’s team) – This Frankenstein group lacks any real identity. It’s a blur of five good singers with names I still don’t know. The lady with the thick eyebrows started strong and the vocal blending was pleasant but I just don’t know how they are going to be around much longer. “I wanted groundbreaking. It was good,” L.A. Reid says. He felt there weren’t any real harmonies, just everyone singing melodies. Demi: “One of the best performances you’ve given but I have to say the energy was sucked out because you didn’t move.” Grade: B
5) Carly Rose Sonenclar (”Rolling in the Deep” Adele/ Britney’s team) – This song is a bit worn out but she brings a new spin to it, slowing it down, adding even more melancholy to it, a bit less anger. Her phrasing is impeccable, her maturity for her youthful age a revelation. She impresses me week in, week out. She is the runaway talent of this crew. Grade: A
6) Tate Stevens (”Somebody Like You” Keith Urban/ L.A.’s team) – I have found him pretty overrated. I find him okay but nothing special. In this case, he does a very solid cover of a great Keith Urban song but I prefer Urban’s voice. Grade: B plus
7) CeCe Frey (”Lady Marmalade” Labelle/ Demi’s team)- Trying to turn her into a diva does not work. In reality, she really lacks the “X Factor” in terms of personality, dance skills, vocal depth et al. She did stay in pitch this week but really, so what? There is no substance here. “You’re going down but you’re going down fighting,” L.A. Reid says. “I felt like I’ve eaten 62 portions of chocolate cake,” Simon said. “Way too much going on.” Grade: B
Emblem3 (”I’m a Believer” Monkees/ Simon’s team) – Yikes. Simon, really? A Monkees song? Aren’t you trying to make this group feel like it’s 2012? A slightly rap-ish portion kind of works. Still, they do upbeat quite well. Last week was not so good but this week at least is entertaining. Still, I would rather hear them do something with more edge (as I would Vino.) “I don’t understand what Simon is doing to you,” Demi said. Grade: B plus

Pitchy it seemed to me that Diamond’s voice broke a few times. It didn’t sound clear if that makes sense. Plus I’m tired of Britney having her sing Whitney.

He lost that loving feeling? ha ha.
Brit, Demi and Simon all dissed him tonight, and LA only partially recovered for him; mentioning timing issues. Another example of “changing-up the song just yesterday”, which has already trapped some of the hopefuls.

Repost: I wanted to say this again: LA just said “one of the best songs in the World,” but did he do it justice? No, LA said he did “good.” Heck, with one of the best songs in the world, not good for your mentor, who picked the song, to say you only did “good.” Not “great!” LA, you are the Bama of the week, and it’s only Wednesday…lol

G! the VOICE is much better than X-FACTOR. The personal drama doesn’t exist for one. The coaches actually seem to like each other and respect each other. They work together, seem professional. The host is so much better. This pair on x-factor drives me crazy, “so how are you feeling at this moment??” The lispy dimples. I have to mute him. The singers themselves act like professional and don’t need to have their esteem boosted. I’d buy any of their music at this point in time. I haven’t bought any x-factor music.

Morning!
Had to watch recorded XF – wed/thurs not good live-watching nights for me.
Paige is the most boring contestant left, but the one with most b—s, standing up to Demi, insisting she (Paige) do her own stage thing. It worked! Loved how miffed Demi looked.
Just because she’s black and can sing Whitney why does poor Diamond have to be stuck with Whitney? She was also sabotaged by stage nonsense.
Vino too should have stuck to his guns and insisted on his first song choice.
Fifth Harmony my favorite “act” of the night. Great song, all girls look terrific. So what if they chorused.
Carlo Rose just ok. ANY OTHER Adele song would have been fine with me.
Tate – critic proof.
Cece – probably her last performance unless she gets to sing-off tomorrow and I’m glad she got an over-the-top send-off.
I know I forgot someone but can’t remember who.

As I stated last night, I am sick over what happened to Vino. Simon’s criticism was absolutely correct. If Vino is smart, he will take everything Simon said into consideration and run with it. Simon told him he had a great singing voice, but the song choice was horrible and he was all hunched over during the entire song. Now, that is the one thing I do not like about Vino: his swag. He needs to tone it way down and just sing. The whole idea is winning the voters over, and this ain’t gettin’ it. As you might have guessed, he is my favorite, but I am losing faith quickly and could not even bring myself to vote for him last night.
Oh, and good morning!

I enjoy The Voice but I don’t think it has more talent than the X-Factor. I think you have to base that on who gets signed. There’s 3 maybe 4 on The Voice that I think will get signed. On X-Factor I think 5 maybe 6 get signed. I think LA signs both Tate and Vino. I think the challenge of working with a different genre makes Tate a lock even if he doesn’t win. I think Simon signs both groups Emblem3 and 5TH Harmony. Carly Rose is a lock! It also would surprise me if LA signed Diamond and even Paige. It’s a shame LA isn’t their mentor. The two groups, Carly and Tate have a chance to become stars. On The Voice only Trevin Hunte, Amanda Brown and Cassadee Pope have a chance to become stars. I think all 3 will get signed. Terry, Melanie and Nicholas are okay but I don’t see them getting signed. Dez maybe! So to compare the two shows is like comparing apples and oranges. It comes down to taste!

It was nice to see those Dino, Desi & Billy kids make a comeback after all these years that have past them by already with more to come but in my opinion if you do not mind me say so they should have sung one of their own hits written for them by someone else instead of someone elses hit song written by the same people probably so be a songwriter so you get the royalties either way but do not get me started please.

DanJ, I agree to a point. I think XF will get more contestants signed than Voice, and probably XF acts have a better chance of making it past the show. Howevever, I don’t think it’s because of “talent”. I believe the top artist on XF have more “appeal” to the masses than Voice contestants. With all this love affair with synthesizers in the music business, CeCe could have a level playing field as much as anyone.

@G, I think The Voice is much more about the mentors than the contestants. On every show at least one of the mentors perform. Granted most people tune in for the star power however it does push the contestants to the back seat. The Voice also has more of an Indy vibe. I doubt Melanie Martinez would get a yes on Idol or X-Factor, same for Nicholas David. I think thats his name.
As far as being the best show for the contestants and with the most to win X-Factor wins hands down. Last year 5 acts were signed to record deals. I think Rachel and Drew may eventually get something done. I think Simon likes both of his groups and will probably sign them and I wouldn’t rule out Lyric145 from getting a deal. Tate and Carly are locks! Vino, Diamond and Paige could possibly get deals. If so it would be from LA.
That’s not to say anyone will be huge stars from X-Factor but it is the best platform for singers. That includes Idol. While Idol has a resume it doesn’t offer anything close to the package the winner of X-Factor gets. The one negative thing about The Voice is doing the show twice a year. It will grow stale must faster.

Hi y’all,
Personally, I find the whole The Voice vs XF debate pretty silly. It’s really all a matter of taste. In all honesty, I haven’t bought the music from anyone of either shows; I’m just looking to be entertained and I find XF (train wreck-ish as it may be) a lot more interesting.
And so, here are my thoughts:
Diamond: She is adorable and can sing. I loved how the song started, but (in another sing I’m getting older) I just could not get into a song with her singing about “wanting to feel the heat with somebody.” I know, it’s a small nitpick, but it stuck out to me.
Vino: I like him at times, but his song selections have been so dull. I would have rather he’d done the song he suggested when forced by LA to change. Too Close is current and popular. If Vino wants to be relevant he needs to do some newer songs. I know he’s not targeted to the Bieber crowd, but if Train’s Pat Monahan can be on the top Pop Charts at 43, why can’t Vino?
Paige: I like Paige…that doesn’t always translate into liking her music. I might be in the minority, but I do think that Demi’s advice during the mentoring session was important. She HAS placed lower when there’s too much happening on stage. She’s trying to get us to like her (and her voice), she’s not reached Rihanna/Lady Gaga status with an overblown production. She might be using the production as a distraction and it’s only going to hurt her. I enjoyed the compromise of focusing on her for most of the performance, and she got to let loose and dance…and look normal. Bonus points for the “rickroll.” It was actually creative.
Fifth Harmony: I love them. Sure there is a lot of room for growth with them, but to be fair, they range in age from 15-19. I do agree that the show hasn’t done a good job of showing them as indivuduals so we know their names, I feel the same way about Emblem3. So, to help, here it is: Ally is the one who’s grandfather died. The girl who sang lead (bushy eyebrows) is Lauren. Dinah-Jane is the only one who wore pants (and had a solo towards the end). The girl who had a “thing” with Arin is Normani, and the really young one who looks a bit like Selena Gomez is Camila. (They really haven’t featured her much so far.)
Carly Rose: She is super cute and her voice is insane. I liked how her version of Rolling in The Deep started. It was very singer/songwriter and a bit Didi Benami-ish (Idol shout out!). As for the song selection, I loved that song, but it was so incredibly overplayed….
Tate: One of the most likeable contestants I’ve ever seen. A hard working family man who adores his wife, what’s not to love? I love Keith Urban, and that song, but to me, Tate’s vocals weren’t as good as usual. Also, what was the point of the guitar? He played maybe 3 chords and then that was it….it just felt very distracting and very much cliche.
CeCe: What can be said about her? I wish she’d been more humble in the beginning. Her early attitude really just soured her chances. I honestly didn’t think that performance was good at all. It was entertaining in the way, a root canal is. Bleh.
Emblem3: These kids alternate consistently from likeable to plain annoying in a flash. The song choice was lazy to me. I thought they were going more for the Smashmouth (Shrek) version than The Monkeys…but it still was just okay. Still, they are cute.
Mentors:
The mentors I’ve been most disappointed with are LA and Britney. LA, with his arrogance and sabotaging of Vino. (That whole last minute dramatic song change was stupid…and completely failed!) Britney has been so boring, barely speaks, and looks at times overwhelmed and uncomfortable. It’s a bit sad to watch. I know she has serious mental problems, and I understand that, but they really should find a balance so she doesn’t look so medicated.

If Carly doesn’t win, there is no God. Oh wait, I’m an atheist. Kidding aside, even though her version of Deep didn’t quite match Adele’s…it was leagues above any of the other contestants. All other contestants are fighting a popularity contest, while Carly is in a singing competition. As far as I can tell, the winner has been chosen already. The only question is: can Tate or perhaps someone else garner enough popularity/likeability votes to beat out a real talent. In the end, I think it’s obvious that Carly will have a long-lasting career whether she wins or not…the rest really just don’t measure up at all.

I may tune in at the end for the results if it falls between a commercial during the Falcons game. Hope they beat the brakes of the Saints. My guess is CeCe and Diamond will go home! But it wouldn’t surprise me to see Emblem3 going home. Singing a Monkees song? Child please!

Enjoy the game for those going to watch it. I predict it’s going to be a good game.

Anyone heard from Deirdre today? She hasn’t appeared on the “Steven T” thread.

I still think Vino is among the three front-runners (along with Carly and Tate, naturally!) even though he musically stubbed his toe last night (thanks, no thanks, to L.A.!) K&CF’s right, he needs some newer song selections to stretch a bit.
While I like 5th Harmony and Emblem 3 (to a point), I think they and the rest are also-rans at this point.
