Who won ‘Dancing With the Stars: All Stars’?

“Dancing With the Stars” has had 175 different stars, 288 nights of competition and now 15 different winners.

Last night’s victor was someone who came in third season eight: “The Bachelorette” Melissa Rycroft. In an unprecedented (and surprising) all-female finale, she beat out two former champions Shawn Johnson and Kelly Monaco.

ABC should be thrilled. They basically created her stardom.  If you never watched “The Bachelor” or “Bachelorette,” you’d have no idea who Rycroft is.
Entering the season, very few people (including Rycroft herself) expected her to win. But she showed a killer combination of dance skills, athleticism and personality that kept her getting plenty of 9s and 10s from the judges.

There was no obvious favorite going into the finals.

Rycroft helped herself with a perfect score of 60 Monday night with her freestyle and samba. “Deliciously irresistible Brazilian bombshell!” said Bruno Tonioli. Johnson garnered a perfect score on her freestyle but was penalized for not following all the rules on the quickstep and received a 27 out of 30. Monaco got close but fell just short of perfection twice: 29.5 for both dances.

Over 15 dances, Rycroft just edged out Johnson in her average score of 28 vs. 27.9. Monaco was the 7th best overall of all dancers this year with an average of 26.7.

Ratings were generally down this season from previous years but the show is in no danger of going away any time soon. Season 16 will be back in less than four months. UPDATE: The finale drew 13.8 million viewers and a 2.9 18-49 rating. During the peak years, the finale would break 20 million viewers and far exceed a 4 rating among 18-49 year olds. This is the first time it has had to compete with “The Voice,” which skews younger and regularly beats DWTS among 18 to 49 year olds (though DWTS won over more overall viewers.)

Although I was rooting for Shawn Johnson, I’m happy for Melissa.

Shawn Johnson is a dancing BEAST!

That’s a compliment, in case anyone is wondering.

She danced beautifully. It’s great that without as much name recognition, she pulled out a win. Of course, I didn’t know who Kelly Monaco was back in season one either.

I’m thrilled Melissa won! She’s a beautiful dancer. Shawn to too much gymnist and not enough dancer, and didn’t deserve to win. Just flat didn’t like Kelly, so nothing to add there.

I was quite surprised after not seeing Melissa for awhile( had stopped watching it for something else) that she had gotten so thin. She almost looks unhealthy now, which seems to be the trend. I always loved her smile and she has a “sexy” mouth. Her legs are so thin they look like “toothpicks” down close to her ankles. I liked her much better with about 10-15 more lbs. on her. Shawn Johnson is short, but stocky, and looks “healthy”. They both do have great personalities.

Hey, Pitchy! I’m glad Melissa won. Only knew who she was because a girl I work with watches “Batchelor” and told me. She has one of the best figures, incl gorgeous legs, I’ve ever seen, and was so bendable – really danced about as well as the pros.

Love Shawn, and thought she and Derek were great, but she’s already won once, Derek 3 times. Tony has been close, but usually has been handed the clunker “stars” – so I’m glad for him as well.

Didn’t like Kelly much – she was good, but not really liking her persona much.

This is the first season I’ve actually watched a good bit of – there’s always been something on at 9 (”Closer”, “Major Crimes”, “Good Wife”) that I watched, so only seen bits and pieces other seasons. Not sure I could watch it 2 or 3 times a year. The title should be changed to “Dancing with some people you may have heard of” – not many “stars” any year. This time, maybe Shawn and Apollo, and Kirstie Alley. The rest – meh.

Hey Sam-A. In retrospect, I have to give it up to Melissa. She was a beautiful dancer with a sparkling personality. I was so gung ho on Shawn winning that I continuously marveled at how well this little short woman with the thick thighs could dance (lol). But, you are right, a lot of gymnastic moves along with her dancing. Had to take my hat off to her for that Bollywood number. That entire routine took a lot of STAMINA. can’t even keep up with it in Zumba class.

Glad Shawn didn’t take it I don’t see her as a great dancer I see her as a gymnast who dances and I didn’t think it was fair she was allowed to bring in the Fab Five, cheap shot.
But I was a little surprised because I thought Monaco and Val were much smoother and had more fluidity to their moves. Rycroft and Tony seemed to me more mechanical in lifts etc. I think they were more neck and neck than the votes of the judges showed but they gave it to Tony because he never won it all the years he has been on. I thought Shawn and Derek were overrated all year and my real favorite went home and should have been in finale, Apollo Anton Ono.

Gymnasts (especially Olympians) take a LOT of dance classes. NFL cheerleaders (Rycroft was one) are obviously dancing all the time, and most have had professional lessons. At least Kelly Monaco was truly a known person who didn’t have a background in dance. I wish DWTS would have people with no dance background. (Kelly seemed irritated during her appearance on GMA this morning.)

Short version: I bet Derek didn’t have to tell Shawn to point her toes even ONCE or correct her posture.

Regarding comments posted, Gymnasts DO NOT take dance, they take ballet (I should know …I am former gymnast.) Rycroft is a former professional dancer who’s job was to dance. She should not have been included in this competition….DWTS should also remember that this show is watched by kids and youngsters…and they should work with the dancers on presenting appropriate attire. Some of the outfits/costumes are not appropriate for all ages. This is not a “sexy” show….it is a family type show. Isn’t it?

Thank you JustMe. First of all, SHAWN can DANCE even though she addes gymnastics skill – because she can. And she did Dance and if you didn’t notice that then you’re not dancers! The great dancers do gymnastics. Just look at So You Think You Can Dance. And Derek Hough does it too. If others could do gymnastics, trust me, they would put it in there but they can’t so they bitch about it. And Melissa has 22 years of dance training and was a cheerleader so she should not have been included because this is a show where you go out of your comfort zone for doing something you haven’t done before. But her agent/manager is one of the producers of the show so go figure. The fix is in and was in since the beginning. Lastly, this is a competition, not a pity, sympathy, “I haven’t won” party. And because you won before doesn’t mean you should give it to someone who hasn’t yet. That’s not competition! Shawn and Derek were robbed of the trophy..
