Fox 5’s Amanda Davis has DUI court hearing

amanda-davis-fox-5Fox 5’s Amanda Davis had her first court hearing Monday in Atlanta traffic court following her November 11 arrest on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving.

Her attorney William Head told the judge they needed more time to investigate the facts of the incident and a new hearing date was set for January 9, 2013, according to Fox 5.

Davis, who has worked with WAGA-TV since 1986, has not been on the air since the arrest. Mike McClain, a Fox 5 vice president, provided a brief statement: “Amanda Davis is currently away from the television station handling personal matters.”

Again, I give credit to Fox 5 for even covering a sensitive story about their own beloved veteran reporter who placed herself in such a tough situation.

The question we do not know: will Davis ever be back on the air?

I left a message with Davis, who has not yet publicly commented about the situation or even release a statement.

“Client not speaking to press,” her attorney Head texted. “It will be resolved in court.” has more details here about her arrest. She was driving northbound on a southbound lane of Piedmont Ave. and crashed into another vehicle.  She has also been arrested for DUI charges in the past, though the last one was 21 years ago.

The original arrest story here.

If this is her third DUI arrest, I don’t see how her station can allow her back on the air. Is it known what the consequences were for the previous DUIs?

Many years ago my husband lost a co-worker who was killed along with his wife when a drunk-driver was drag racing down Ponce de Leon and hit this couple, parents of two young children, head on.

Fire her and move on Fox 5. She is lucky she didnt kill someone this time. Jail is needed here to teach this low life a lesson. She is not above the law!!!!

I like Amanda Davis and the persona she projects on Fox . As a veteran Atlanta newscaster, I believe she should be off air while she attends a treatment facility for alcoholism. When she returns to the air she should make a statement about what happened, talk about her treatment, and do PSA’s against drunk driving. She should use her celebrity to make the case for sobriety. I don’t think she should be fired, because then the problem goes underground for those “average” folks who don’t believe they have a drinking problem. We all have something we need to fix in our lives.

A lot of good can come from this, if Davis handles it correctly w/ help from Fox. She could be a field reporter for six months, then return to the desk with an honesty about her situation.

@Denise surprisingly I agree with you. Really no reason for her to lose her job what purpose does it serve. It would serve the community as well as Amanda for her to have to serve some sort of jail and probation time, address the issue on air, make speeches and public service announcements in order to keep her job. She is more than this horrible mistake she made she is also first and formost human and very good at what she does on air. It could save someone else’s life to she her step up to the plate. Most importantly she needs to get her life in order before she destroys herself or worse kills herself or someone else.

Had it up to my “keister”(whatever that is) with people saying DUI is a “mistake”. IT IS NOT A MISTAKE! A “mistake” is something you do unintentionally without meaning to, almost unknowingly.
Someone who drives drunk knows what they are doing, at least beforehand. That is the problem with people saying “don’t drink and drive”. If you drive to a bar knowing you are going to drink, then you are going to drive home, because you feel you are “10 ft. tall and bulletproof”, then you intentionally did it and IT IS NOT A MISTAKE! Stop calling it a “mistake”! There is no difference in someone driving drunk and walking down the sidewalk waving a pistol and firing at random. The car is the “weapon” and YOU are loaded. Alcohol has to be recognized for the drug it is, and stop getting a free pass. There is a war on tobacco, so why not alcohol?

Wow Rodney you give credit to Fox5 reporting so vigorously about one of the own in such a sensitive situation. Haven’t seen the other local station as anxious to humiliate one of their own. Hope you never have any problems.

Perhaps she can call in a favor to John Lewis’s office in exchange for those softball questions.

The whole situation is so sad. I remember once when she was going through her divorce and this occurred. I am glad no one was injured or killed. I think she should not drive for a while and before FOX lets her back on the air she needs to do some personal soul searching. In reality, very little has been said—if it were me , a non-public person, it would be all over the news. As far as cutting her some slack, why????? She consciously drank and drove. This is not about her, it is about the other person she could have killed.

Rodney she been with Channel 5 since 1986 not FOX… WAGA was once a CBS affiliate before switching to FOX in 1994. Hope she has a job to come back to, and she not the only anchor ( if she does has a drinking problem) other anchors in other markets drink while anchoring a newscast or drink before going live on the air. In Detroit WXYZ-TV Bill Bonds a legend who was a stone cold drunk!

Anchors and reporters make mistake like the average person, but because of their job they’re held to a high standard, but they put their pants on one leg at a time. Many other anchors have done much worse so hope she comes back!

Denise what you said was right on point, it she doesn’t want to come back to work she should still make a statement.

I fear her celebrity status and political contacts may result in her receiving a lesser sentence or no sentence at all. How often do we see some celebrity or politician get pulled over for what appears to be a slam dunk DUI and then they use money and influence to beat the system. I say lock her butt up for 30 days and then send her to DUI School after that if FOX 5 wants her back who cares.

November 28th, 2012
7:48 pm

I wish her all the best. Beyond any other consideration, she has a problem that will get worse unless she addresses it. There’s no timetable, but coming back on the air anytime soon, especially with the prospect of making of a public mea culpa would push most problem drinkers to their next drunk. I hope she tends to job one right now, which is Amanda Davis. Again, all the best.

Ask a warehouse worker or cashier convicted of a DUI if their employer gave them a second chance, let alone a fourth, because “everyone makes mistakes.” I think not. As long as they’re bringing in ratings or drawing crowds, public figures–even local-news pseudo-celebrities–get to play by a different set of rules than the rest of us. Davis will get a slap on the wrist and be anchoring again by spring.

I remember a similar story regarding a former WSB-TV staffer that was tragically killed by a wrong way driver on I-20 back in the ’90s. I’d like to say that his name was Tony Hall… and I believe long-time WSB-TV staffers would probably know who I’m talking about. The wrong way driver in that case was driving under the influence of alcohol… and was later convicted of DUI and vehicular homicide, among other charges.

I’m aware of other TV markets having similar situations with on-air journalists getting caught for DUI. Tampa Bay: WTSP evening anchor Reginald Roundtree, WTVT weather anchor Andy Johson and morning anchor Russell Rhodes, and retired WFLA evening anchor Bob Hite. Sacramento: KOVR/KMAX entertainment reporter Mark S. Allen.

Nice One!

Eric, I think the guy’s name was Tony Hall; good memory (though it seems you might be in the field since you know so many of these stories).

While Amanda Davis has only been arreested twice for DUI, the ‘word’ is that over the years she had other stops but was cut some slack. Don’t know for sure; wasn’t there. But…that’s the word in ATL ‘leadership’ circles.

She’s a nice person; I hope she gets some help.

Oh, the sanctimony that’s on display here! There’s a place that she should have to be punished for alleged criminal actions. That’s the court of law. There needs to be no double punishment by her workplace.

Amanda Davis made a mistake. She deserves to be treated in a fair manner just like any other citizen. And her job is her job and only they can make this decision. The legal system will judge her. These are her personal problems. They are not our problems or the station. I sorta admire the station for the role and how they have handled this situation.

You know I am just gonna bite the bullet and say please all the negatives, SHUT UP!
Was it wrong “YES” should she be held countable “YES” but get fired “FOX 5 WILL HANDLE THAT PART”. Ask yourself would you want to lose your job. We can all say what we think needs to happen but when it comes down to it be careful what you say because it can happen to you. Never say Never. I have had enough because there needs to be shame all over the negative part of this blog.

In a town like Atlanta, being in a particular “demographic” makes one as invulnerable as Superman.

This lady could do just about anything short of pulling a “Sandusky” in this town, and it wouldn’t matter.

This isn’t Boston, People.

@LG – I was school age at the timne of that WSB-TV staffer story, and remember that story. There are a lot of news stories that stick with you. Atlanta TV has had its share of memorable news stories. I remember the Fred and Sarah Tokars story from 20 years ago. I remember the Blizzard of ‘93… the 1996 Olympics… the Cabbagetown Mill fire… the Heritage High School shooting… Donna Lowry’s step-daughter.

As for Amanda Davis… I do pray and hope that she seeks treatment, and gets the help that she needs… and I believe that she can recover from this DUI episode.

November 29th, 2012
1:16 am

I don’t have the answer to this one. Amanda could use her time to talk about the tragic consequences of DUI, but she hasn’t had any tragic consequences except for being put on leave from her job. On the other hand, we do need to allow people to discuss substance abuse issues without wrecking their entire lives. I bet for every 10,000 viewers who watched Amanda on TV, there were at least 1,000 that have driven while impaired. Remove the stigma; however, that seems stupid to even say. Drunk drivers kill. NO easy answer from me.

November 29th, 2012
2:47 am

@Elizabeth – I agree. I too could see Amanda educating others the dangers of DUI… as well as the dangers of alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse.

November 29th, 2012

She won’t talk to the press, Fox 5 is being hush-hush about it, yet ALL local news channels brag about asking tough questions and getting answers, yet when it comes to THEM, they act all innocent and silent. If the tables were turned the other way (politician, regular citizen), there’d be facts, interviews, video, pictures, and hour-long broadcasts on the person.

It’s hypocritical for Fox 5 and Amanda Davis to not return the favor that they would do…If it was YOU. Think about it. I’m DONE with local news jerks making six figure salaries, mooching off of the demise of regular people. What’s worse, the crime committed, or the newscasters milking that dreaded story for every rating and ad money they can? In other words, the crime is the paper cutting the tip of your finger, newscasters are the various snags, pulls, and salts affecting the wound.

K-ster-if you were the one that had the DUI, being a “regular citizen”, no one would know or care. Your face/name would not be all over the place, strangers would not be commenting about you. What are you talking about?

as a drunk myself i do sympathize with amanda davis but i don’t condone the drunken driving, but we all have to escape the day to day reality’s of life sometimes, some people do it with drugs some alcohol and some with jesus christ but it all the same thing escape from reality’s of life, which can be very hard sometimes

No one that walks this Earth is perfect ! Negative comments about this lady is classless and so uncool let the court system take it’s course and if she needs treatment let’s wish her the could easily have been your sister, mother or a love one in your of luck Amanda and praise God no one was killed.

Let’s not throw Amanda Davis under the bus so fast.
Yes, she needs to pay for her mistakes and maybe the station will not let her come back. Let’s pray she gets the help that she needs, because this woman has done a lot of good in this community.
Let’s not forget Wednesday’s child!!!!!
How many children has she found a home for????
Amanda please get help… I am praying for you.

I don’t think she should be reporting the news. When she will be reporting on accidents and DUIs herself, no, she should take herself off of the air. Fox 5 can do whatever it wants, but I can’t watch her. She needs help more than she needs to be on television.

@ Denise I agree with you 100%, to all others that is speaking negative be considerate. @ Dum-Bass you are stating some truth. But we as people need to realize until we can own up to our wrong doing and seek the help that is needed, all else is in vain. Whatever it is that Amanda is going through, I really wish her the best.

If Mrs. Davis goes to jail or gets let go by the station, who will FOX 5 videotape taking young welfare parasites, lazy school students & future Affirmative-Action hires to the zoo for the Sunday Night newscasts?

November 30th, 2012
3:33 pm

Amen, Dum-Bass! A “mistake” is when you dial the wrong phone number or put a half cup of sugar in when the recipe called for a quarter cup. She made a choice, a really bad choice, to drive while impaired. Thank God, and airbags, that no one was killed or badly injured by her deliberate choice. She made her choice that night, she will suffer the consequences. When are you enablers going to quit making the ‘mistake’ excuse for her? She needs help and rehab, NOT excuses.

God Bless

DRCH2. I am so with you on that opinion about Diane Sawyer. Nobody can maintain that dopey grin every night for an hour without some kind of help! Wake up, America! The media as a whole is one drunken orgy!
