Catching up with Jamie Dukes, new 92.9/The Game mid-day host

Of all the regular daytime hosts on the new sports station 92.9/The Game, only one has worked for both rival stations 680/The Fan and 790/The Zone: former NFL player Jamie Dukes.

Since the Game launched Oct. 24, Dukes works 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays with Jerome Jurenovich, a Fox Sports South host and reporter.

Dukes, an  Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman from 1986 to 1993, began his radio hosting career on the Zone with a late-night show called “Dukes After Dark” in the late 1990s, then worked mid days. Later, the Fan general manager David Dickey approached Dukes in 2002 to co-host a new morning show with former 96rock jock Christopher Rude. “It was great working with Chris, a radio professional,” Dukes said in a recent interview. “He taught me a lot of things about the business.”

In 2006, Dukes joined the NFL Network and continues to work with them. The network recently wanted him to move to Los Angeles to do a morning show. But he wanted to stay put for family reasons. NFL Network instead allows him to work from home in Braselton so he can still do the morning show remotely. From there, he goes to the Game, which is based at Colony Square.

“This opened up a window for me to be able to do sports talk again,” Dukes said. “I’ve always had a love for it. I love directly communicating with fans.”

He touted the strong points of the Game: its vastly superior signal and more diverse lineup compared to the Fan and the Zone.

“We have a powerful signal, a tremendous crew,” he said. “Given the nature of our signal, I think that’s going to cause problems in the landscape when all is said and done.”

(In its first two weeks in the ratings, the Game came out of the gate without almost no listeners. That was not unexpected. The station has chosen a soft opening since this launch lineup is not necessarily the lineup we’ll see in six months or a year. With little promotion of the new station, the format change simply washed out almost all the rock station Dave FM listeners but didn’t replace them. Ratings, as a result, tumbled about 90 percent between the final week of Dave Oct. 18 and the first week of the Game.)

And while the station is about sports, he opted for what PD Terry Foxx has been pushing: “Sports is the prism we are using. It’s really about life. Listening to Rachel talk about her dog passing away. We are real people with the same issues as everybody else.”

He loves immersing himself in football. “I don’t perceive it as work. The challenge is managing the schedule,” Dukes said.

So far, he said he’s enjoying his time working with Jurenovich. “Jerome’s a very seasoned guy who loves sports. We’re two good-natured guys who like to have fun. We pick at each other. We needle each other. At teh same time, we respect each other. When I was here as a Falcon, he worked at CNN doing Headline News. He’s worked with a couple friends of mine: [former Braves] Ronnie Gant and Brian Jordan. We kind of fit in as brothers right away.”

He takes pride in not just cheerleading for teams he played on. “On the NFL Network, I’m going to say it even if you don’t like to hear it. I can talk about [Packers quarterback] Aaron Rodgers being a whiner. It doesn’t matter I used to play for the Packers.”

Although the Game has yet to create a big marketing campaign to get the word out, Dukes expects the roll out will be big once they’re ready. CBS Radio also owns Atlanta’s No. 1 station V-103.

“A company like this doesn’t make moves like this lightly,” Dukes said. “They have infrastructure. They have assets like billboards to get the word out. That’s going to have a direct tie to ratings.”  And having that relationship with V-103 is a good thing. (Ryan Cameron has come in and guested on the Game, for instance.)

Jim Murray’s show that on 10:00PM to 2:00AM is great. I love the guy.

Everything else on the station is GARBAGE.

Enjoy the new station and the hosts, living outside the perimeter it is great to get a station one can hear. In addition, how can 790 rebroadcast a show on Sunday morning that was aired on Friday? Sunday is the day after big college football games, yet we have to hear a stale show, or listen to Nascar on 680. Also good not to hear the bloviating John Kincade on Sunday morning. Good Luck Jamie, I am listening!!!

With the exception of the morning show, I love this station. Even the 2:00AM – 6:00AM show is great. I only catch the last hour or so, but I like what I hear.

I must admit, Jerome and Jamie is the best show thus far. I hope RC is right, and the Stews replace the morning show.

Here’s the problem with The Game: their best shows don’t air during drive time. As Mike mentioned in a comment above, Jim Murray is the best thing on 92.9

They also have a weekend guy named Mark Ryan who is really good. He reminds me of a young Cowherd. Very entertaining.

The afternoon show is an absolute train wreck. Why did MMM leave TRG to join that mess? geez.

yes it will be awhile before the rating tide rises for game. PM drive is a train wreck and tough listen even for those that freak out about signal strength OTP. AM drive when I can listen is scattered and Jason and Mac is like going to church. How much fun is that for 4 hours?

The Stews can a make difference if they are prepared and are ready daily to bring it hard. Can’t mail it in and jive out on HBO Vegas trips; the truth will set you free. and make you better. The Game has some work ahead of it.

we wonder why this country is so out of whack. why do some many people are just plain ugly and hateful. cant we just agree that some people have differnt tastes than others? Rather than write down racist or hateful commentary. Some of you people are just “keyboard bullies”.

@scorpianking It’s the usual suspects, must have some sad lives. Personally i don’t care if the Stews return or not, however if some people like them and the power that be so desire, they will return. Amazing how powerful feel behind a computer screen, aka “Keyboard Cowards”. Anytime there is a topic about blacks, they arrive like flies on a cowship. Maybe it’s the same person posting under different names.

I have mixed feelings about the Game. I don’t like the afternoon show. Carl is a goofus and Kordell need to go be a real housewife.
The evening show isnt bad and the midday show is pretty good.
I wonder if the guy who does the sports flash or news update is trying for a gig with SPortsCenter? He tries to hard to be amusing as opposed to informing the fans.

That afternoon show is absolutely HORRIBLE! Kordell is a slow adult, the girl is sooooooooooo annoying and the other guy speaks too much ebonics.

I’ve got to agree with a couple of the recent comments…the overnight shows are the best. Jim Murray is a new voice and very unique. A little too much of the Patriots talk though. And why Mitch Evans — a guy who’s been in town for 10+ years — is buried from 2-6 AM is beyond me. He’s fun to listen to and knows it all about Atlanta sports. Hopefully when things shake out he gets moved to a better time slot and some of the other out-of-towners like Mac & Jason are shown the door.

I’m giving them a shot for one reason: they actually encourage callers to call in; they actually entertain callers and their opinions. 790 has confused the concept of talk-radio–that it means we are “lucky” to hear them talk for entire hours without any interaction with fans at all.

I have stopped listening to 680 altogether; I believe they will be the ones in deep trouble when it’s over.

I like 92.9 because I can actually get a signal at night–and it’s live/local programming….that wants to know my opinion. Just wait until the lineups start being tweaked–it will get better.

790’s arrogance seems to be a consistent hindrance to the station. Too often, they lose sight of the meaning of their existence…which is the FAN.

It is what it is. Keep evolving 92.9–this market is yours as the competition is so weak and limited.

You will never hear the 2 stews on the game, or for that matter I doubt on any other station. Unfortunately, they became their own worst enemy. they created an act, that did well, but let it go to their head and became lazy and combative. There rep is bad among managements now.

Signal is great. The afternoon drive is the worst I have ever heard. The Jim murray guy is solid. I sure wish they would get good talent. With that signal they could bury the others sports talk stations.

I love signal but not much else. I”m a local sports guy. I want to hear talk about my local teams. I enjoy Nick C and Chris D. Tony B and the teck announcer had a very good show. Wish the zone an the game had combined. Buck, Matt good at the fan. Like David A afternoon on the zone. Stews not my bag at all. GODAWGS!

I LOVE this station.

92.9 THE GAME is diverse, fun, not a bunch of white guys talking UGA all day EVERYDAY .. telling you how great they are and, as someone said above, letting the listeners participate. If it’s not for YOU … don’t listen. I like all the shows and I really appreciate the diversity because everyone has an opinion … not just white guys!

Also, there are other sports outside of SEC football … trust me there are.

I like the morning drive but I would love to hear Ryan and Doug as well…

I will also say that while I know that not all people think alike however I do suspect that some of the people that criticize 92.9 have interests in 680/790 who has lost a lot of their listener base due to all the changes so I do suspect jealousy from those with interests in both stations….

I actually know a lot of people that have switched from both AM sports stations to 92.9….

One thing for sure,I don’t want to hear too many voices from 790/680………I’m cool with The Stews because they had knowledge/they are funny and they had good sports interviews due to the sports connections.

War Eagle your in a Chocolate city and when the stews come back you will see, as good as Jamie Dukes is he can’t hold down a radio station by him self, Kordell Stewart admitted he’s a big time Saints fan and several of the on air personalities don’t like or respect the fans that are here, GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM………W/O the stews this station has no shot at survival

The signal is great. Glad to have a live 24hrs sports talk. Like the call in’s as other stations don’t do much. I am not a racist, please don’t let the Stews close to this station. I will not listen to them. They are their worst enemy. Love to listen to one of my favorite Falcons, Jamie Dukes. Just found out about this station, they need to get the word out.

The Jerome and Jamie show is good. They need to make a run at Chuck and Chernoff for their afternoon show. The afternoon show needs an overhaul. And the morning show needs Chris Dimino and Nick Cellini. Those two need to be away from that blowhard Steak.
