I drove up to Buford Wednesday evening to catch a bit of Georgia’s first “Idol” winner Phillip Phillips on a chilly but pleasant evening at the Mall of Georgia’s outdoor stage. About 2,000-plus people were there to see him, mostly young girls and teens.

Phillips was his usual humble self, comfortable on stage and giving the crowd a taste of cuts from his new album, including “Hold On,” “Gone Gone Gone” and his hit single “Home” (of course.)

He then signed CDs for two hours. (I missed that part to go see “Lincoln” with my wife.)

Here he is performing “Gone Gone Gone”:

And here are more photos from the event:

Here’s season 3 winner Fantasia (looking good and covering Aretha Franklin) and 12th place finalist Leah LaBelle (doing a Teena Marie cover) performing on the Soul Train Awards, which aired last night on Centric. I wasn’t even aware that LaBelle had signed with Epic Records/So So Def Recording. Good for her on her persistence! I haven’t seen her in so long I had forgotten what she looks like. (It’s been eight years!). She sounds great.

Phillip is a doll, and seemingly, from the tv interviews I’ve seen, very humble.

Mercedes: “PI” was the most beautiful film I’ve ever seen, albeit the “at sea” scenes could have been about 20 mins shorter for me. I cried several times, and knowing my love of animals, bet you can guess every one of them. The opening scenes of the zoo were unbelievable.

Not so fond of “Silver….” – Bradley Cooper was fantastic, but the first 3/4’s of the film were way too depressing and too much of a downer for me. But did love the last 20 or so minutes – the dance contest was hilarious!

Thanks Rodney, good to see PP pushing his music.

Glad to see that Fantasia didn’t go all “Hulk” on us and rip that outfit the way she did those pants!

Oh, rickster – couldn’t wait to look at the Fbomb, eh! Glad the whole place hasn’t blown up as it usually does if her name is mentioned!

I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m sure it will not be anywhere as good as seeing her and them ripped pants.

DARN, I missed pp’s CD signing? If I didn’t have to watch paint dry, I would’ve made it!

I was there and saw numerous guys and women of all ages – not just teens and young ones. Didn’t stay to get my CD autographed, because the line was too long.

Big, super-positive article about Scotty McCreery, “A Country Colt Learns To Prance”, in today’s new York Times. He’s compared to “some of the greatest slow-tempo singers in country music – Merle Haggard, Keith Whitley, Randy Travis.”

And for those of you here who followed the ups and downs of my ailing cat – this morning I had to put her down. Brain tumor.

Sorry Mercedes. We had to go through that two weeks ago with ours, it is always a difficult thing to do.

Mercedes, I’m so sorry to hear the poor little cat didn’t make it. Was keeping fingers crossed that having the bad leg removed would get her all ready for a new life.

Deirdre, keep us posted on your Mom.

I hate sad times, but during the holiday season always seems to just make things even sadder.

Good morning all!

Condolences to you, Mercedes. They really are like members of our family and losing them is really hard.

Deirdre, I know these are sad and difficult days. Thanks for checking in with us. Lots of us here have been through what you are experiencing and are with you in spirit.

Re: Steven Tyler, LOL!! I love it! He knows this Nicki chick is easy to set off.

Let me take this time to say, many times I start posting there then I seem to be locked out. I can’t contact anyone so I just leave with may tail between my legs. I never know when I’m afforded the opportunity to come back in and hang with you guys. It’s the weirdest thing.

Sorry to hear about your cat, Mercedes! I’m not really an animal person, but now that I own one of the more affectionate cats on Earth, I definitely can identify with your loss.

I watched The Voice last night. Is it me, or has it gone downhill in a hurry? Maybe I am just tired of it and don’t really embrace it anyway, but I found even the most talented singer boring last night.

Hi y’all,

D, I’m sorry to hear the update on your mom. Sending you the best wishes possible during this difficult time. Hope being around when you can offers you a distraction.

Mercedes and JT, I’m sorry to hear about your losses. Pets are always such a bright spot.

Pitchy, I know the feeling. Some times the blog is just hoppin’ along and I’m too busy to post, and when I’m around it’s dead. I guess it’s what happens.

Hope everyone had a nice holiday. I was able to watch Lincoln and I really enjoyed it. I did have the impression it would focus on more than just the 13th amendment, but it was still a stellar performance by Daniel Day-Lewis. I also watch Breaking Dawn pt 2 (I know, I know…in fairness, I did read the book 4 years ago). I found it better than Pt 1…but I am also glad that it’s over!

As far as XF, I liked Beatrice, and thought she should have stayed longer than Paige or Cece, but she is extremely young and probably is best served by leaving earlier. I think Tate and Carly are pretty much battling to win it. Emblem3 peaked early and haven’t been able to regain that form.

Ptitchy: I’m having posting problems too. If I wrote more than a few lines, seems like it’s just thrown out. Drives me nuts.

Hey, K&CF – long time no see. Did you see Kelly on “Ellen” last week? Sounded and looked great.

Yes, I like XF much better than The Voice. I love The Voice during the blind auditions, but not so much after that. I watch just for the heck of it most of the time. I do like Cody, Cassady, and Trevin, however, but last night they all were boring to me.

Hi Sam-A, no, I didn’t have time to catch Kelly on Ellen. I’ll probably try to check it out later today online. I know, I’ve been THAT busy.

Harriett, I’m with you. I started watching both and really liked the beginning of The Voice, but my interest faded quickly and I’m now just watching XF…

I like the overall talent pool of The Voice better than XF. I think that everyone remaining on The Voice is talented in their own niche. Compared to XF, The Voice doesn’t have contestants as weak as Cece. I think that XF strongest singers are Tate, Vino, and Carly Rose. That’s it.

I’ll try and tune in to BET’s Apollo Live! I’ve always enjoyed watching that show in the past, and look forward to the changes in the show’s format. This show will definitely be a fresh alternative to the norm of Idol and XF.

Now, your top 6 on The Voice:

Cassadee Pope – fair singer, good performer, attractive.IMO

Amanda Brown – good singer, good performer

Melanie Martinez – cool singer in a very limited range – not a screamer, seems like a fresh, current Folk/Pop type of artist — different from the competition, not chasing the “power & range” part of the competition.

Nicholas David – good voice for certain types of songs, has a 60’s hippie type of look. His song choice last night was the most interesting, and very well done.

Terry (McDermot ?) – versatile singer, 80’s/90’s rocker throwback –

Trevin Hunte – young power singer with good range, the song choice they put on him next week, could take him higher or to the bottom.

Cody Belew and Dez Duron have left the building. 3 guys and 3 girls left – the guys have an advantage because (I think) like the other talent shows, they get more support from a predominantly female voting audience. I would rather see any of the 3 girls win, but not betting my last cold one on it.
