790/The Zone picks up ESPN Radio, Colin Cowherd

ColinCowherd

Colin Cowherd will now be on 790/The Zone

As expected, 790/The Zone has picked up ESPN radio programming from 680/The Fan and will also start airing Colin Cowherd beginning Dec. 1.

The Fan dropped its long-time affiliation with ESPN two weeks ago because sister company Cumulus is working with CBS Radio to start a competing syndicated sports talk network.

Cowherd, a syndicated talk show who was on for several years on the Fan, will return on the Zone from 10 a.m. to noon.

This means one fewer hour for Mayhem in the AM from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m instead of 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.  And The Red Zone moves from 11 to 2 p.m to noon to 2 p.m. Mike Bell and David Archer remain from  2 to 6 p.m.

Bob Richards, operations manager, said Cowherd was one of the Fan’s stronger shows and he is thrilled to have him on the Zone side.

The Zone will also have access to ESPN radio programming if it chooses to use it such as the World Series and NBA finals. And the Zone’s local shows will now be able to interview ESPN’s national roster of talent, he said. An ESPN weekend show hosted by John Kincade of 680/The Fan won’t be an option the Zone will likely pick up.

And for folks wondering about how 92.9/The Game has done in the ratings, it’s too early to get a full month’s numbers yet (the new format debuted Oct. 24). The first week, I’m told from a source, was very very modest indeed, far lower than what Dave was getting. The station hasn’t been heavily promoted yet so expect it to be a slow build.

Well, anything that means less of those local 790 goons is fine with me, but really who even still listens to them. At the end of the day 680 is really much better…

92.9 is awful. Just awful. Waste of a powerful signal too.

Does this mean we will have to listen to that blowhard “John Kincaid” on Sunday? If so, I’ll pass.

“And the Zone’s local shows will now be able to interview ESPN’s national roster of talent.”

That statement is a bit misleading. While ESPN has maintained a policy of only allowing their people to appear on ESPN affiliates, it certainly hasn’t been a hard rule followed to the letter. I’ve heard many ESPN folks on 790 over the years, for example.

A reminder: Even if The Zone airs the World Series, NBA Finals, and other major events, it will be for naught outside I-285 after dusk. Its weak (1000W) night signal doesn’t carry that far. So don’t be to upbeat.

That’s true but how many people actually spend their nights sitting around listening to those types of events on radio anyway? Aside from maybe truck drivers or 3rd shifters, I can’t see how there would be much of an audience regardless of signal strength.

Colin Cowheard is a boob that should’t even beon the radio. He has been awful since his days on local radio in Portland OR. Just TERRIBLE! Glad I can avoid him and listen to my sattelite radio!

I’d choose to listen to an orchestra of people farting over listening to Cowherd.

Rodney, I don’t know if you realize this, but with 680/93.7 using Fox Sports Radio on the weekends and 1230 shifting from ESPN Radio to FSR, there are now four stations in Atlanta (including 1340) that use FSR. Overkill much?

Heard the morning guy on 92.9 introduce his co-host Randy Cross as a Superbowl champ from the San Francisco Giants. OK, I know it’s early, but it’s a bad sign of how much prep went on before going live. Want to give them a chance.

It’s only a matter of time before 92.9 picks up the stews….after their non competition clause is up anyway

I use to listen to 790 the zone a lot. I live in habersham county in northeast GA you can not pick up the station after you pass Gainesville Ga. I am a new listener to 92.9 the game and really love the fact that you can hear it clear at 3:00 am. I wish the other 2 sports talk stations in Atl would go FM.

Don’t forget to watch my new food show. I can see the writing on the wall. Anybody know anybody over at the Food Network? I’d let Alton Brown work me over for an audition. Cha Cha!

As far as 92.9 The Game goes, I say give the station time to build momentum. Having Mitch Evans is a great start, though I wish he was on at a better hour. All else aside, it is great to have a sports station that you can hear with a great signal outside the perimeter, unlike the other two stations where you literally have to be in their parking lots at night to hear their signal.

If the Zone picks up the World Series and the NBA Finals, the only people that will be able to hear the night games will be the ones at the Buckhead Tower Place Parking Lot outside.

I just got the inside track on an exclusive listing for a double wide trailer in Gwinnett County with all plumbing hook ups and everything. I’d really like to close on this before Christmas. 2012 has been a rough year for my sales. Really could use any help all those that supported me on the radio could give me.

Rodney, just how OLD is that photo of Colin Cowherd, anyway??

And with all the sports radio stations in the area now, you’d think at least one of them would broadcast Sunday and Monday night NFL games. C’mon, man!

I should be on ALL of these stations right now. Drinking Crown Royal. Calling barber shops…. now that’s what missing on sports talk radio…. calling barber shops. It’s an art and the Stews are the masters. Too bad each station is racist. That’s the only reason me and Doug and out friend Mel don’t have a drive home gig.

All the posts about 680 and 790’s signals being weak are planted by the game staff. Pathetic when the best you can say is that you have a better signal, clearly the content is inferior. Bring back Dave

Sorry Chernoff. 790 fired me and now I’m at ESPN. You were ran and ended up at 680 The Dump. I hope the Stewarts have another skill, maybe cutting hair or something because they will never find another radio gig. Racist radio doesn’t work these days, even in Atlanta. They had a good deal going and blew it.

I pitched my idea to Bob Richards for the Chris & Chipper Show. It would be me & Chipper just talking about how great Chipper is. I’d talk about his soft skin, his masculine features, his firm grasp…

Ooohhh it would be stimulating. We’d talk about his favorite positions. Mostly 3rd base. The way he goes after balls & uses his stick.

I hope happens
