Colin Cowherd will now be on 790/The Zone
As expected, 790/The Zone has picked up ESPN radio programming from 680/The Fan and will also start airing Colin Cowherd beginning Dec. 1.
Cowherd, a syndicated talk show who was on for several years on the Fan, will return on the Zone from 10 a.m. to noon.
This means one fewer hour for Mayhem in the AM from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m instead of 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. And The Red Zone moves from 11 to 2 p.m to noon to 2 p.m. Mike Bell and David Archer remain from 2 to 6 p.m.
Bob Richards, operations manager, said Cowherd was one of the Fan’s stronger shows and he is thrilled to have him on the Zone side.
The Zone will also have access to ESPN radio programming if it chooses to use it such as the World Series and NBA finals. And the Zone’s local shows will now be able to interview ESPN’s national roster of talent, he said. An ESPN weekend show hosted by John Kincade of 680/The Fan won’t be an option the Zone will likely pick up.
And for folks wondering about how 92.9/The Game has done in the ratings, it’s too early to get a full month’s numbers yet (the new format debuted Oct. 24). The first week, I’m told from a source, was very very modest indeed, far lower than what Dave was getting. The station hasn’t been heavily promoted yet so expect it to be a slow build.

Why does every sports radio thread turn into a 2 Live Stews bash? They obviously made a huge impact when they were on air. All that hate/love/obsession they get from this blog speas volumes. They could easily make a comeback if that’s what they choose to do. The evidence is right here in black and white. All they have to do is take one of Rodney’s sports radio threads and show a programmer, “Look, they are still talking about us and we’ve been gone for months. They are obsessed with us.”

I got a great idea when we come back…. when it’s baseball season and we don’t be watching baseball….. get this…. wait for it….. we could call barber shops!! You know man, see what the word on the street is for real folks in real barber shops. Now that’s entertainment. I say a full hour dedicated to calling barber shops. I mean a black barber shop in the middle of the hood is something that everyone could relate to!!!

92.9 is unlistenable. It is a shame as their signal gives them such an advantage. I tried them all during the day and cannot handle it. Awful.

Well, the woeful state of Atlanta radio just keeps picking up speed, like a boulder tumbling down Mt. Everest. What white shirt thought that yet another sports station in Atlanta would be a good idea anyway? And 92.9 had some of the best programming in Atlanta radio as it was (which in Atlanta radio is akin to being the tallest midget). Atlanta is currently ranks #9 in radio market share (out of some 275), yet I defy anyone to find worse programming than ours, regardless of city size. It’s just awful. The beginning of the end of Atlanta radio seemed to be the WGST 640am debacle from several years ago, letting loose the local talent. The rest of the stations, both am and fm, seemed to water down their talent pools, and took out any semblance bite and originality of their programming and on-air personalities. And once Boortz is gone in January, there will be no need to listen to terrestrial radio at all. And before the Boortz haters jump in, I myself don’t agree with all he espouses, but that guy is a maverick in the market — one of the very last — and can make just about any topic entertaining.
Rodney, can you write an article about the downfall of Atlanta radio, and why it’s happened to such a major market? Is the current awfulness of Atlanta radio reactive or proactive? And if it is for some crazy reason proactive, what on earth are our radio executives thinking? What is the end game for such awfulness? Is there some advantage that I am not aware of for scuttling a (seemingly) successful station? For me, I’m renewing satellite radio for access to talk and news, and listen to Pandora for music. And if God is good to me, I will never have to hear a Nicki Minaj song ever again.

This move pretty much keeps me from moving the dial to 680 at all. Only show left on the channel worth listening to is Chuck Oliver. 790 now that they dont’ have the stews is pulling away and the best sports station in Atlanta by miles. 92.9 is still unlistenable.

I wouldn’t listen to 790 unless I was paid to do so… and I’d need therapy afterwards!

Um, Chris, if you actually listened to 680 recently you’d know Cowherd has been off there all month….

Like it or not Doug and Ryan will have a pot on 92.9. No they are not for everyone, but that doe not mean no one wants them on…personally I want to hear them. Those of you not wanting to hear them can change the station until a show of your choice airs.

Rodney, with Scott Ferrall leaving Sirius and going to CBS Radio, will 92.9 pick him up? That would give me a reason to listen to this station.

This is a huge pick for The Zone, not only with Cowherd, but with ESPN. This is a game changer, and all of a sudden, The Fan’s days are numbered.

Colin was the only thing worth listening to on 680, well except for Chernoff and Chuck every now and then when there’s a commercial on Bell & Arch. Will be glad to have him over on 790 now. The guys there just know sports so much better, they get better interviews, and they minimize the “I’ll just call in and listen…”

Not associated with any of the stations (I’ve given up on 680 completely; they are unlistenable)….Anyway, there is ONE thing which has me listening to 92.9 more and more: they actually take CALLS from people.
I’ve listened to entire segments/hours on 790 where not a single caller is entertained. I think 790 needs to tell some of its talking-heads to shut up once and a while.
I like interchange–as THAT is what talk-radio is supposed to be about. 92.9 is getting it–and I will continue to listen…..What a concept!!!
