Lyric 145 was eliminated Thursday night. CREDIT: Fox
Tonight, we get a double elimination on “The X Factor.” And the country fans came out in force a second week. Tate Stevens was tops again in the voting, just beating out Carly Rose (second again) and Vino Alan (third again!).
I predicted that Lyric 145 and Paige Taylor would go home. I got one right: Lyric 145.
Simon Cowell really botched his coaching of them. They seem talented on the surface but were given ridiculous mash-ups that had very little to do with modern hip hop. It’s as if Simon was stuck in some sort of TLC/Naughty By Nature 1990s time warp. Their outlandish costumes did them no favors either. I’m not surprised they’re gone.
The two singing for their life are Jennel Garcia and Paige Thomas, both from Demi’s team. I don’t really care if either go home.
- Jennel Garcia (”The Reason” Hoobastank) – Her singing felt weak and uninspired. Her overly tight leather pants? Especially unfortunate. Grade: C
- Paige Thomas (”Paradise” Coldplay) – Her singing was only marginally better than Jennel’s. The song choice: beyond horrendous. She always struck me as a second-rate Rihanna. Wake me up when it’s over. Grade: C-plus
L.A. Reid picks Jennel to go home. Britney Spears chooses Jennel, too. Simon Cowell tries to bump it to Demi. “You’re the boss,” Mario said, so he gives it over to Demi. “The act I’m sending home tonight is … why don’t we send it to Simon.” She stalls. Sheesh! Then she says Paige. So back to Simon: “The act I’m going to send home is Jennel.”
No surprise. Jennel deserved to go home after her lame performance tonight. I just never “got” her, beyond the fact she looks like a doppelganger for Demi. Demi did her no favors with her imaging and song choices.
Here are the top 10 in votes among the survivors in reverse order:
10. Paige Taylor (dropped two slots, not a good sign)
9. Arin Ray (near the bottom again but up two spots)
8. Beatrice Milller (up from 10th but not a big improvement )
7. Diamond White (down from fourth)
6. Fifth Harmony (down from fifth)
5. CeCe Frey (up seven spots from 12th place)
4. Emblem3 (up two spots. “I’d still like both groups higher,” Simon said. This just shows how hard it is for groups to garner votes.)
3. Vino Alan (holding)
2. Carly Rose (holding!)
1. Tate Stevens (again!)
***
Hollywood Reporter reports several of the acts were unhappy with their song picks (Jennel, Beatrice and Lyric 145 in particular). And the mentors don’t spend that much time mentoring and the songs are frequently picked by the producers.

Good evening! Yay, I’m up and running. Good to see the snippets of last night’s performance. Glad I recorded it because I’m looking forward to hearing Carly Rose rendition of Celien Dion’s song.
Good evening, DanJ and greetings to all others that may blog this evening.

WOW, Lyric 145’s elimination must say surprised me, yet it personifies my stance on the fact that the judges blow smoke up the butts of some of the contestants. Their comments subliminally help voters pick those that should go further or go home. More prevalent with AI.

I lost a Halloween contest because I went in believing I would be judge solely on my costume and not that I didn’t dance due to the dictates of my costume (lol). I say that because I think Lyric 145’s costumes took much away from their talent. To think that’s how they may dress for all of their performances,if they won, would have not prompted me to want to buy a ticket. Sometimes, all that stimuli is annoying.

Not surprised that Beatrice went through, due to her singing voice. Not shocked that CeCe went through, due to the “prime” spot in singing rotation last night.

Wow! Paige, Jennel or 5th Harmony are out! My hunch about CeCe being safe was correct. Hate that I was right. Bad time to be right! Paige is probably out if it come down to a sing off between her and either of the other two. 5th Harmony is probably out if it’s a sing off with Jennel.

Jennel is singing for her life – Paige Thomas next. Demi will be forced to choose one, along with the other Judges vote – to see who stays. I think if they deadlock, it goes to America’s vote.
Jennel picked a very slow, undertone song. Paiges was more upobeat with more riffs.

There are rumors that the XF contestants are not happy. Many do not like the songs that are chosen for them to sing(and say that the mentors don’t choose the music. The producers make the choice) Some are also saying that they rarely see the mentors and a couple have complained of song changes the day before the show. They are also complaining about the wardrobe choices. Little Beatrice has been one of the most vocal saying she hated her song this week.

I agree that Tate is not a great Country singer — good, but not much real star appeal.
I think that CeCe and Arin both got some benefit from the anti-Judge backlash. Paige is another fairly good singer, but not at the level of some of the real stars in the Biz.
I think the young, cute girl vote is split-up about 4 ways right now – 5th Harmony, Beatrice, Carly and Diamond. As one, then 2 of them get voted-out, it should help the survivors in that category.
Emblem 3 now has the Rap-Hip-Hop area by themselves. Now maybe they will see if they can ace a modern rock ballad, to expand their base.
5th Harmony has 5 hometown areas voting for them. Diamond vs. Arin – who wins? Paige vs. CeCe again? Will Country voters sail Tate through, unchallenged to the victory – or will Carly Rae win-over some of his Tate Nation in the coming weeks?
Only the shadow knows.

Good night. Been reading my my book, “Just Above My Head, by James Baldwin. Excellent style of writing and an excellent story line. If you like excellent writing, with a slow story line that will engulf you, buy this book or download it. It’s a slow read that has an emotion momentum. Stay with the story. I think it’s one of those books that will have you on your couch in socks and sweats enjoying the pleasure of a good book while the rain is pounding against your window pane. How many of us consciously can take time to sit with a book blocking out stress of our day or week? Not many! Again, this is an old book that I think is beautifully written. Order the book.
I so hope my rant is not a long post. If so, I apologize.

If CeCe is allowed to be herself and not some incarnation of Demi she will shine. Also Vino is a true passionate singer who is complete with excessive swag that seems a little overplayed at times. My top 3 have stayed top through this whole show from the start to now. I have said that Tate, Carly and Vino was the best and always will be. However I cannot believe Cece is still there and beat Page and Jenille. Them two have way more talent than Cece. The fact that they got sent home before Cece and a few others upsets me. Cece does not have the talent for this show and I think she is in still because DRAMA is what she shows more than any other talent. She has fans only because people feel sorry for her. Not fair to the contestants that really have the right to be there.

The one thing I enjoy about XF is that they tell the order of the vote. No other show has done that. I’ll have to give Simon a nod for that one.
Note to Pitchy: James Baldwin was an excellent writer. Go Tell It On The Mountain is a good read, too but I am partial to his play Blues For Mister Charlie. Being a black gay man in the 50’s, he lived during an extremely difficult time. It shows in his writing.

Shocked that CeCe was not sent home. Even more shocked that she rose so far in the rankings. Actually, it makes me kinda doubt the validity of those rankings. (It’s not like Simon and his crew are above manipulating things.)
And completely shocked that Paige was saved over Jenelle. Looking at their overall performances on the show, Jenelle has done better. (Also, partly due to the horrible song/wardrobe choices for Paige from Demi.)
Part of me is surprised (because of their entertainment value) that Lyric 145 was sent home and part of me understands it (because of Simon’s, or whomever, crappy song choices for them.)

I’m not a fan of either Jennel or Paige but I thought Paige’s song last night was a LOT better than Jennel’s. Jennel always looked very awkward to me and her voice was not used to its best advantage. I get the impression that the mentors show up to film their “mentor session” and that’s about it.

D, I think you’re correct about Tate and the Country music fans. But him being the only Country singer on the show also means he doesn’t much have to worry about splitting votes like all the Pop-oriented teen girls.
How many of you would agree that “Diva” was a monumentally stupy theme?
Tate gets a pass doing a Shania song because Shania Twain WAS actually on one of the Diva specials (VH1??).
Vino gets a pass because Tina Turner did do a cover of ‘Let’s Stay Together,’ even though his performance was more like the original Al Green version.
And of course there were selections by Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Beyonce and Donna Summer but who thinks of Katy Perry or Cyndi Lauper as divas (in either sense of the word)? Meanwhile, no Whitney? No Aretha? No Cher? …C’mon, man!

Good Morning! Well Jennel Garcia was my early pick to win it and went home but I am making progress. Last year after the auditions Jazzlyn Little was my pick to win it all and she didn’t make it to the live shows.
I think it was Deirdre who said she looked stiff on stage and I do agree with that. Pimp spot or not CeCe was HORRIBLE and should have been sent home. I can see Tate, Vino, Carly, and Emblem3 as locks to get contracts. It’s possible all 3 of Simon’s groups getting contracts if LA sign Lyric. Diamond may get a television deal or possibly signed by LA. With three 13 year old girls left I think one either Diamond or Beatrice will be the next to go. Probably Beatrice! She’s the weaker vocally and emotionally.
It would be nice for fans to get to vote on song choice for each contestant. I’m sick of hearing the same songs over and over.

At this point, that’s the best thing I like about XF. I appreciate that addition to the show’s format.
As for Lyric 145, I think Simon could care less that they’re gone. He probably sabotaged this group to annoy LA. This group never had a chance to win, regardless of who coached them. However, they would’ve done much better under LA’s guidance. Lyric was just happy to get the opportunity to be exposed. They had to make the best out of a bad situation.
Glad to see Tate at #1…..again! I like his type of country, because it reminds me of hip hop. Just keep it simple, with no frills and the rawness makes it real. Like I said yesterday, it wasn’t his best but it was good enough.
I guess Vino is kind of cool. Diamond is okay, but everybody else is kind of blah to me.

What I don’t understand about the order of the voting is – why wait until the end to let us know?
Instead of announcing the safe ones “in no particular order” – announce them in order!
Start at the lowest rank and work your way up till there are three people left. Then you can announce “one of these acts in our top vote getter while the other two will have to sing for survival.”
I think it would add to the suspense.

Ditto to blkshepherd!
I think The Voice and XF try to incorporate rap into the format of the show, because it’s a relevant genre that’s woven into the fabric of Top 40. The only way that can remotely work is to have a singing group, that has a person who can rap as well. Otherwise, rap groups belong on rap shows.

You said a Mouthful..Rappers belong on Rap shows..Hip Hop or where ever they mostly rap speak or talk in a song. But Not a singing competition. What did you think of Paige?..I believe girlfriend is a Tad bit too high on herself. She puts more into her Outfits and Appearence than Performing and voice.(Something I notice many of the black females do on these shows. More into their outfits, makeup hair, then actual VOICE and performance which is the Most important part
Her lipstick however, was rocking though. Never seen sparkle lips before. Its a new meaning to Ruby Redy lips. with rhinestones? Her outfits are more interesting than her voice and thats not good but she did do better with her song choice than Jennal. That song Proud Mary did not do her justice.
Those awful tight leather pants on her short fat thighs and legs was screaming TACKY! and Please somebody Lay Proud Mary to death. If it aint Tina, or Beyonce performing that song. Everyone else just looks crazy. Infact Tina herself looked crazy performing the song(Was never my favorite from her anyway I dont care if it was a big hit for her and Ike. I was never totally sold on Paige, because she was too pop for my taste. One Rihanna is enough. I think her song choice a couple of nights ago was horrible. Overall, I think she sings okay, but today’s music does nothing to help maximize her talent. How would anyone market Paige? She should’ve done something different in her appearance, to help market herself other than a a Rihanna knockoff.

Brit’s girls – Diamond, Beatrice, Carly – as well as Simon’s 5th Harmony – are all competing for the amazing young girl vote. So as the field wanes, a couple of them are going to get rocked “before their time”. Beatrice, imo, has a better voice than most of them, but not as popular, so she could be first out.
Tate has not only the Country backing, but also those voters who don’t want to vote for kids, He symbolizes more the stable, family personna — and I think the average age of the voters are likely above 40 for this show, just like Idol.
CeCe had her best performance in the auditions, as far as what she can really do with her voice. But has never been allowed to do what she does best, since. She’s been morphed into different characters for Demi’s wild dreams, and will be a struggle for her to recover enough to compete for the top 5. If she hits the right song and look – then she has potential to be back in the competition.

“” Demi may or may not be responsible for that when many of the contestants are saying that the mentors are not choosing the songs. I get the impression that the mentors show up to film their “mentor session” and that’s about it.”"
Several other news articles about the show, validate that remark. Also, the show claims that some of the last minute song changes are licensing/copyright problems — which then leave that contestant or group with little time to prepare.
With Lyric 145, who wanted to change the lyrics – that could be legitimate. With the others, it is either complete BS or they have a bunch of fools handling license clearance. They are given a short list of songs to choose from, which are already cleared, if and when they choose to use them.
The talk of “creative differences” causing last minute changes between the mentor, stage director and producers, is more in the “dirty trick” category rolling down from the producers. Those who watch X-Factor from other countries, such as the UK, etc., maintain it is very common for the show to give negative or positive “boosting” to contestants through various means.
This includes positive or negative side-stories footage, song changes so they have less time to prepare and music publisher “deals”, to have a song done; even though the contestant can’t relate well to it, and it’s out of their range and style.
Of couse, this may be just hearsay – we wouldn’t want to think they would manipulate anything.

Morning!
Seth, most singing competition shows have this problem. Idol faces it regularly. They give the singers a list of approved songs then the singers choose something not on the list and must wait for clearance from whoever owns the song. Then the complaints of last minute song changes start flowing. Seems to me, if a song is chosen that has not as yet been approved, then the singer ought to be rehearsing TWO songs, just in case.

Philip Phillips album has been released. It got a better than average(for an Idol winner) review in Entertainment Weekly with a letter grade of B.

Good morning.
Looks like my referencing of MC Hammer last week was timely. Did anyone see him last night on the American Music Awards? He was freakin’ awesome. He’s got to be in his 40s.

I wish I had watched that, Harriett. I’ll have to catch it on youtube. Hubby and I watched the Dust bowl story on PBS.
I have been trying hard to avoid Rodney’s recap of WD until I watch it this afternoon. Rodney is a master of temptation!

Here is is, D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOyo7JD7hjo I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did the audience! Everyone was on their feet. It must have been a thrill for Hammer.
Yeah, better stay away from Devil Ho, tempting innocent folks like you!

Oh, and I gave up on 666 Park after three shows. Most others must have too. It was a waste of Terry O’Quinn’s talent, IMO.

Thanks for the video, Harriett! What fun!
And yes, I gave up on 666 after 2 episodes. I found it kinda silly. I also tried really hard to stick with Last Resort but found it way too unbelievable! Was it drama? Was it Scifi? Noble leaders dealing with dishonest politicians, wise island bar maids and basically Tahiti’s version of a small time mafia overlord. Yep….way too unbelievable.

Well, I guess everyone else is off this week. I am here tomorrow, then off the rest of the week. Going to Charlotte to cook dinner for my 92 year-old aunt. I always do that and tell her she can invite whomever she’d like. That is fun for her and for me, too. What are you doing, D? Or anyone else who might be lurking–what are you doing?

Hi y’all,
That thing called “life” has kept me pretty busy these days, but I wanted to drop by and wish you all a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! I’ll be staying locally and hosting friends. It’ll be good food, good friends, and football. Also, catching XFactor, of course.
I know there are a lot of complaints about it, but honestly, I think I FINALLY have gotten used to Simon’s ways, and I’m pretty entertained. I think going into the show with the expectation that I’m most likely not going to be “fan girling” over any of the contestants has helped alot. They are all likeable in their own ways. I think Tate has the classic regular family guy story, and people can root for him. Carly is amazing, and I really like Beatrice, tho I wish she didn’t feel so pressured to succeed as a way of helping her family.
For me, the weak links are:
1. CeCe mostly due to her attitude, but I have noticed the producers are smart and are showing her bonding with Mr. Likeable (Tate).
2. Arin: Super cute, but after American Boy I’ve been unimpressed.
3. Paige: Infinitely more likeable than CeCe, but struggles a lot vocally.
4. Emblem3: they have not managed to live up to their audition with that original song, Sunset Blvd.
But that said, I have been pretty impressed at the fact that Simon has viable groups this time around.
