Anchor Guy Rawlings out at CBS Atlanta after less than a year

guy rawlingsGuy Rawlings, the 5 and 11 p.m. anchor on CBS Atlanta, has left the station after less than a year.

He started at the station, paired with Stephany Fisher, in early January. His WGCL-TV web page is gone and he’s been taken off the list of anchors on the WGCL-TV website.

I have not gotten a response from Rawlings. Director of Programming Kenny Lawrence confirmed he is gone but didn’t say why. [UPDATE: 11/13/12: A spokesperson at Meredith, which owns WGCL-TV, told TVSpy, “We exercised the early out option on his contract and wish him the best in his future endeavors.” Interpretation: they weren't happy with his performance.]

As I write this, Jaquitta Williams is being paired with Fisher at 5 p.m.

Before joining CBS Atlanta, Rawlings did sports at a station in Orlando. I interviewed him a year ago.

If Guy Rawlings is no longer on 46… he’ll have become the 15th (if I counted correctly) male anchor to leave 46 since 1999. The 14 other male anchors that have come and gone… Mike Stevens, John McKnight, and Ray Metoyer leaving in 1999… Calvin Hughes and Steve Johns leaving in 2002… Todd Shearer and Chris McWatt leaving in 2003… Tony Harris leaving in 2004… Charles Molineaux leaving in 2005… Rich Noonan leaving in 2006… Mike Moore and Bill Gaines leaving in 2009… and Mike Brooks leaving in 2010. 46 can’t manage to hold on to good male anchors… some leaving on their own accord.

Many of us are aware of 46 cancelling the Noon news last year… and wish they could bring it back, and still keep the 9AM hour of Better Mornings Atlanta. Back in early 2010, 46 pretty much jettisoned its sports department, outsourcing local sports coverage to talk radio station 790 The Zone… and not sure if 46 is eyeing a new agreement with 92.9 The Game (former Z-93/Dave FM), if they’re considering not renewing current agreement with 790… or they could consider bringing back the sports department with new set of sports anchors.

The station should just let Markina Brown do the weather, news sports, better mornings and all of the reporting. The ratings would skyrocket..

Jaquetta Williams and Markina Brown have got to be the only reason people watch CBS ATLANTA.

Get rid of Markina? What are you smoking?

That’s the only reason to watch Channel 46.

And I used to like Jaquitta, until she started rocking that short, greasy Jheri Curl.

Meredith, and Channel 46 have always believed if something’s not right, the answer is to fire someone. In addition to the 15 anchors, there have been at least 7 news directors, and 4 station managers in the last 13 years. WGCL will never NEVER EVER be a winner. Atlanta viewers just don’t trust a station that makes a U-turn every 12 months. In addition, WSB and WAGA have a stranglehold on the ratings, and WXIA picks up anything leftover. The saddest part of it all, WGCL has some top-notch reporters and producers who do quality work, but terrible management stands in the way of providing a venue to highlight that work.

Need to make Paul Ossman chief meteorologist and hire a few well known names away from the competition. Isnt that what other markets do? Stop bringing in unknowns!

Hey Rodney- Can you do a piece on the local news ratings for Atlanta, including the afternoon newscasts now that WSB has been doing their 4PM for awhile? I would be curious to see how much of a hit WGCL took. Thanks!

Guy is cool and was good at his job. Sorry to hear that. But it does open up a possibility. Stephany Fisher’s lisssspp is brutal. Hearing her say web linksssss is spine tingling. Jaquitta absolutely butchers the names of streets, towns, and people on a daily basis. And Markina is no Dagmar, but is a competent Meteorologist. So I put forth this suggestion….Put the most beautiful woman on the planet, Jennifer Mayerle, in the anchor chair and life would be wonderful!

I cannot stomach their newscasts. I get sick of hearing “ask the touch questions” and then get a report of a reporter asking questions that we know are not going to be answered. Just asking the questions does not make news… it is the answers. Journalism 101: build a relationship with the newsmaker and they will give you the answers you are looking for. Being “in your face” just ends up being tabloid journalism.

I blame this on management, not the reporters. Management has, and continues, to kill 46 news.

I agree that 46 used to be very good as “Georgia’s News at Ten”… back when 46 was still an Independant station, before 5 took FOX away from 36. 5 used to be very good back when it was a CBS station… and very good as “Eyewitness News”. I could picture 5 re-affiliating with CBS, and becoming a CBS O&O… and 46 getting FOX, and Meredith likely keeping ownership… which I’m sure would be very far-fetched. 11 has had its ups and down over the years. 2 has managed to remain the top-rated local station.

@Eric the day WAGA TV 5 goes back to being a CBS affiliate Rupert Murdoch
(the owner of FOX/NewsCorp) would be on his death bed or had a heart attack. WAGA-TV is owned & operated by FOX and I’m sure the station is very profitable as FOX Station as it was when it was affiliated during their CBS era.

18 years later WGCL/CBS 46 has been going through the motions. Stephany Fisher has been a mainstay with the revolving door of female and male anchors. They have invested in their news product better and if they can continue to bring some more momentum along with their own sports anchors and put Wheel of Fortune at 7/ Jeopardy at 7:30pm… I can’t deal with the sandwich timeslot on 11 Alive/ My ATL 36 for Wheel/Jeopardy!

I like 11Alive but that news director they have needs to hit the road! She’s the one bringing down the morale. Plus 11Alive needs a better graphic package too! However they do give you a balance of not just the shoot em up bang bang stories, but give some positive stories as well-

WSB-TV the same old thing the only thing that has change is Monica & John are retired and Justin/Jovita I’m not really feeling them but hey they’re still #1

When I moved here in 1999, they had Steve Johns and Helen O’Neill in the am and noon while Jane Reboulet did the evening news. I really liked them.
FYI–>46 handles the programming for Peachtree TV.

I’ve now taken notice of 5 and other FOX O&O’s rolling out new stations group graphics package. Theme music remains the same on the FOX O&O’s… and it remains to be seen if set modifications could and might be in the works for the FOX O&O’s.

I’m aware of atleast 3 TV station groups rolling out new graphics, set, and music to their stations. Hearst stations getting new graphics and music… Scripps stations also getting new graphics and music, and several of their stations getting new sets… and NBC O&O’s also getting new graphics and news sets.

Also over at 5… Amanda Davis is currently on a leave of absence after her recent DUI arrest… and I’m guessing that management is mulling over her future. Some may be speculating about Lisa Rayam as being heir apparent. I’m praying and hoping that Amanda can recover from this mishap.

As for 11 and 36… I agree that ND Ellen Crooke needs to go. I agree that 11 and other Gannett stations need better graphics… and that Gannett music needs to go too. I could picture 11 getting that “NBC O&O Package” by 360 Music, even though 11 and 36 are owned by Gannett, and are not NBC O&O’s… or 11 going back to “Tower V.3″ by 615 Music. 11, IMO, also needs a new set… and I could picture a new set by Clickspring. Also wish that 11 would bring back the 5PM news, and do away with 7PM news.

With 46… I believe new graphics would be nice. Wish that 46 would bring back its Noon newscast, move Y&R back to its 12:30PM slot, and put Better on at 3PM… and wish that 46 would be patient when it comes to employing male anchors. 46 having an in-house sports department would also be nice.

I do hope that Amanda Davis keeps her job at WAGA and Suchita (who no longer at FOX 5) and Gurvir would be great replacements, but Amanda Davis has been at waga for a long time.

My wish is for 11Alive to get it together and bring back the 5pm news as well too, along with a nice set, graphics and a freaking new LOGO TOO! I was glad Jeff Hullinger was back, but I think he’s better as a reporter vs anchor. His face is not friendly in HD, but he’s a good at what he does.
I want Brenda Wood to have a good leading male anchor, and DeMarco is good, but Gulstan Dart (who worked at WSB) they would be great together!

CBS 46- Needs to stick with a brand name for at least a decade! CBS Atlanta or CBS 46 please pick a name, some strong programming and yes bring a in-house sports anchors/reporters. Yes they do need to find a male anchor and stick it out with them. They change male anchors at least every 2 years. As for Y&R moving back 12:30pm they had to get approval from CBS and the ratings in Atlanta have been strong, and it leads in to their 4pm news, but if CBS wasn’t happy they would galdly moved Y&R back to 12:30pm.

WAGA & WSB continue to stay strong with their news product and owners-

Stephany Fisher is the sole WGCL anchor who deserves a spot. In fact, she deserves better than to anchor the bottom-feeder in this market.
