The 40-year old American Music Awards on ABC, created as a more populist alternative to the Grammy Awards, this Sunday will features performances by some of today’s hottest acts, including Atlanta’s Usher, Carrie Underwood, Pink, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and a token rock act: Linkin Park.

On CBS Friday, a pre-taped tribute to Whitney Houston will be highlighted. Usher pops up to sing “I Believe In You And Me,” while gospel singers Cece Winans and Yolanda Adams performed “Count On Me.” Jennifer Hudson, who did a powerful rendition of “I Will Always Love You” at the Grammy Awards right after Houston died earlier this year, did a medley of  “I’m Every Woman,” “How Will I Know” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”
