Jason Brock has a sweet personality, a good voice and a theatrical air. But as a man in his 30s without pop star looks, he was handicapped and became the first act to go home from the live vote.
“I did it for the gays and Japan,” Brock said. “But I’m happy to have been here.”
He was in the bottom two with the much less likable CeCe Frey.
The judges had a choice between the two of them. Since they split the votes (Demi and Simon chose Jason to go home; Britney and L.A. chose CeCe.) the person with the lowest votes went home. That was Jason.
CeCe sang a ragged, yet defiant Cher song “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.” And she wore an impressively unflattering white outfit that exaggerated her hips and pulled back hair that made her already harsh persona seem harsher. Grade: B
I thought Jason did a better job with a relatively subtle version of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” I’d give him a B-plus.
Then for the first time in any singing competition, they showed the order of all votes. (Take that, “American Idol”!) We here at this blog love the transparency, I’m sure. What do you think?
Here was the order and the top 3 were my top 3, though I would have put Vino and Carly Rose ahead of Tate. It’s great that two of the “older” singers are in the top 3, too.
1. Tate Stevens (surprise!)
2. Carly Rose Sonenclar
3. Vino Alan
4. Diamond White
5. Fifth Harmony (pimp spot!)
6. Emblem 3 (surprisingly low!)
7. Jennell Garcia
8. Paige Thomas
9. Lyric 145
10. Beatrice Miller
11. Arin Ray
12. CeCe Frey
13. Jason Brock

Deirdre, not sure if I am or not. I kind of understand her appeal to the youngins, her sweet girl aura and girl next door kind of looks, but she has had a lot of boyfriends since she’s come to the scene. Sometimes I think she can sing and sometimes I think she can’t. I feel the same way about Eryka Badu. Her bubble gum songs can be infectious, but I like Katy Perry more.

The few times I saw Brock I thought he was annoying as all get out.

Ya know, I actually don’t have a problem with Emblem 3 and their personalities. Yeh they are sorta alpha maleish, frat boy, goof offs. But they’re aren’t aggresive, or mean spirited in anyway. They are positive, so to speak. So they don’t bother me, and I feel like they easily could too.

“Does anyone else find it interesting that the top 3, Carly, Tate & Vino didn’t have elaborate stage productions?”
Eh… Carly kinda did.

Carly kinda did.
Maybe it didn’t seem elaborate without all the over-the-top hair, costume and makeup additions.

“Taylor Swift will be the results show guest next week on XF. Ms Swift is always interesting when she sings live. She’s been doing a much better job at it lately.”
Funny story. I was talking to my wife the other night and I said “you know what, I actually like that pop song about never ever getting back together”. She smirked at me and said “do you know who sings that song?” I said “no…why (very sheepishly)”. She said Taylor Swift, and I was like UGHHH. You mean she actually does a song that I like? lol heck I even said at frist, there’s no way because there is actually decent singing in that song. So I had to look it up (cute video by the way), and whatya know. So I guess I can’t say Taylor Swift is 100% garbage now, only 95%. And that’s my Taylor Swift story.

And yes, Pitchy, she has a very muddled love life. With all those guys and all those break-ups, at some point she needs to ask herself what she’s doing that doesn’t work.

“Rx: I liked Brock. He was fun. No chance of winning but fun, nonetheless.”
I actually did too for the most part. However, in a popularity contest he probably pushed the envelope a little bit too much. Like when he pinched Mario’s but. What if that would of been one of the Emblem 3 guys or Veno or someone like that, and they pinched Khloe’s but? I wonder how that would of gone over?
I think if I was on one of these shows, and I really wanted to win, you can’t take your eye off the objective. To appeal to as many people across the nation that are willing to pick up a phone or computer and vote for you.

For some reason, this second page is full of vertical lines!
Harriett, I keep up with Revenge, Revolution and PoI too, but several eps are still not watched.
“In no particular order” – especially liked it when RoboHost had only two people left to “order”.
MerleK3 – aggressive rocker chicks never made it on Idol, and probably wont on XF either. Cece sounded aggressive-fake and sad, as if she’s just realized all the “improvements” are bad and she has the worst mentor on the show. Britney may not say much as a judge but at least she leaves her charges’ personalities alone.
Lovato’s idea of mentoring is to play with her people as if they’re live dolls. Redo hair, make-up, clothes, tell them what to sing.

Standing ovation to XF for the transparency in ranking the contestants. Tate is my dude, so I’m happy to see him at the top. Surprised to Emblem 3 so low, and Diamond White so high.

Seth T, I agree with most of your post except your placement of Vino Alan in your “Ground Floor” ranking. Considering the fact that he had the 3rd highest total vote, that ranking sounds less like a thoughtful prediction and rather more like a personal dislike of him.”"”
Actually, I would be more inclined to buy an album of Vino’s soul music than any of the others. How I placed them was based partially on odds I have seen, blended with voting results from last night.
That put Vino in the 2nd group of 4, rather than the first. Each performance and eliminination will put a different spin on ratings.
CeCe was middle-of-the-pack initially, because she actually has a very good voice for sweeping ballads. Demi’s infatuation with make-overs and bad advice have driven her to the bottom, and this could happen with anyone else as well, as X-Factor tends to want to blast the massive walls of stage lights, add the distacting dancers, pile-on the cheese and contort their acts into bizarre characters.
I think Vino’s main early competition will be Tate, Jennel, Paige, and possibly Diamond — He’s not really competing with the voting blocks of Carly Rose, 5th Harmony or Beatrice Miller – they are a universe in themselves, for voters.
Arin Ray, Emblem 3 and Lyric 145 are more in competition with each-other, than with Vino or Tate. Although I think if Lyric goes before one of them,(which is likely) it will benefit Vino more than Tate.

I just read a rumor that AMC is bringing back The Killing in partnership with Netflix(no really, I just read it. I have no insider info on this although I will be asking my son if he knows anything) I loved The Killing. So methodical and precise. Great characters, too.

Sorry, G, but you’re wrong. Taylor Swift already had a number of hits BEFORE Kanye made an ass of himself on the awards show. I didn’t care much for her at the time (due to the times I heard her sing live and was unimpressed with her singing sans autotune) but she was widely known before that.
Maybe you’re really just not in that large a portion of the country?

Before I turn in for the night – was there ever any discission here about the remaining singers on the Voice? Just checked my recording – except for one guy, Cody something, and the girl by the piano, I was unimpressed. Most of the rest seemed like novelty acts. The sad version of “Bleeding Love” made me remember Hollie, fondly.

I remember having many discussions on the Idol board about Taylor deserving or not deserving awards BEFORE the Kanye thing. She was nominated for a Grammy, earned 2 ACM awards with 5 nominations, 5 AMA’s with one nomination, 4 CMA’s with 1 nomination, 5 CMT awards, nominated for a VMA the year before the incident…
2 number one albums on the Country charts, one of those also number one on the US chart, 4 top 20 US hits before 2009, 7 top 10’s on the Country charts.
Why am I looking up Taylor Swift… I don’t know.

@RxDawg, Carly’s stage production only had a raised platform and images being shown on the back screens. No dancers, lasers, fireworks or physical props. Since X-Factor tends to go overboard I thought it (stage production) was mild.

Okay, I understand what you did, now. However, I think anyone making (or taking) odds on who’s going to win one of these shows is basing their prediction less on factual or statistic data (WGWG aside) than on W.A.G. (wild ass guess).

It appears Simon is taking a cue from Idol. He is now AT LEAST IN THE UK having the contestants go on tour. It seems like the American Version is following that of the UK since they’re a few weeks ahead. I bet they announce it in a few weeks. Here’s a link.

Lucky girl! I’m in cloudy, soon to be rainy, muggy ATL – the temps have gone up, sadly, so it’s uncomfortable and humid here!
Hope no other regulars died last night on “WD”! I’ll find out tomorrow night.
Saw “SkyFall” – it was ok – the second half a whole lot better than the first. Missed the humor, glamour and romance (albeit “cheap thrill romance”) of all the other Bond films. No glamourous casino scenes with well-dressed people, barely a lick of humor, and the “pretty girl” was barely in the film long enough to call her an official “Bond Girl”! There sure were lots of beautiful deep blue eyes though, between DC, Judy D and Ralph Fiennes. All have really beautiful blue eyes.
