CeCe Frey is my bet for going home this week. CREDIT: Fox
“The X Factor” dialed back the production, let the voices shine and overall, made for a tolerably entertaining two hours.
Diamond White was brought back after being eliminated last week. Not surprising. There were rumors they were going to do something like that.
The theme tonight: songs from the movies. And it’s the first night of public voting – finally.
My favorite was easily Carly Rose. She has star power. And Vino Alan surprised me.
As a judge, Britney was useless again but at least she’s succinct. There wasn’t as much obnoxious interplay among the judges period.
My bet for who will go home: CeCe Frey. Lame arrangement, bad song choice, unlikable person adds up to very few votes. I would have considered Fifth Harmony (the girl group Simon put together) in danger, too, but they got the pimp spot. Simon really wants them around awhile.
First up: Arin Ray (”American Boy” Estelle/ Britney’s 13-16 team) – The dancers’ outfits are comically awful. But he is far more confident than last week and pulls it off. “You were definitely more smooth,” Demi noted. “You look like a star up there.” Grade: B-plus/A-minus
2) Paige Thomas (”Take My Breath Away” Berlin/ Demi’s 17-24 team) – She has some modicum of charisma, a bit of that Rihanna cool vulnerability. She’s a good singer but her voice isn’t all that distinctive to me (unlike Rihanna.) She did a good job but nothing that would make me say hmmm…. “I’m not completely blown away,” L.A. said. Grade: B
3) Vino Alan (”When a Man Loves a Woman” Percy Sledge/L.A.’s 25-plus team. He sings this one with conviction and more soul than Michael Bolton could ever muster. And I appreciate that they didn’t over-produce this one and kept it simple. “Phenomenal,” Demi said. Grade: A-minus
4) Emblem 3 (Mashup of “My Girl” Temptations / “California Girls” Katy Perry/ “What Makes You Beautiful” One Direction/Simon’s team) – The early favorite to win didn’t do anything to hurt themselves. They sound a bit raw but show no shortage of charm. Demi said it was a mistake to even allude to One Direction. “It’s called a tribute and being clever,” Simon said. Grade: A-minus
5) Beatrice Miller (”Iris” Goo Goo Dolls/ Britney’s team) – She has a pretty, interesting voice. She does this rather angst-filled song with too chipper of a demeanor. It really feels like she’s play acting this one given her youth. Strong ending. “The tone of your voice sounds like a hit record,” L.A. said. “I can see you working,” Simon said. “You have more confidence this week.” Grade: B-plus
6) Jennel Garcia (”I Love Rock and Roll” Joan Jett/ Demi’s team) – She vocals aren’t quit edgy enough to pull off this type of rock to me. And she’s almost too pretty. I feel she’s being packaged a certain way. I’m not buying it. “It was a Joan Jett parody,” L.A. said. Grade: B
7) Tate Stevens (”Wanted Dead or Alive” Bon Jovi/ L.A.’s team) – Good song choice for Tate. He gives his performance sincerity and drive. I’m not sure he’s a star but he’s pretty good. “Tonight, it feels like you’ve arrived back in this competition,” Simon said. “I like giving guys like you a break.” Grade: B-plus
Lyric145 (”Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” Mary Poppins/ Simon’s team) – This worked much better than last week’s performance. It’s ridiculous in an LMFAO-meets-Black-Eyed-Peas kind of way. Very very gimmicky with the Alice in Wonderland fashion cues. But entertaining. “It was inventive,” L.A. said. Grade: B-plus/A-minus
9) Diamond White (”I Have Nothing” Whitney Houston/ Britney’s team) – The most over-sung song on “American Idol.” (Eight times!) She has her moments and she’s darn gutsy to take it on. It’s not quite standing ovation worthy but good enough to keep her around for sure. Grade: B-plus
10) CeCe Frey (”Eye of the Tiger” Survivor/ Demi’s team) – Pitchy, dawg. Terrible song choice. She’s trying to channel Lady Gaga but has only a fraction of Lady’s vocal skills. And that awful face tattoo is back, bigger than ever. Blech. “Anything recognizable about you has been thrown away,” Simon said. “Horrible. No imagination. Nothing different from the original.” CeCe said she wants to show off the “fierce” side of herself. Grade: C
11) Carly Rose Sonenclar (”It Will Rain” Bruno Mars/ Britney’s team) – She has an incredibly mature voice for her age. This is a touching, pretty take on this song. She doesn’t imitate Bruno either. It feels organic, like it’s her own song. Impressive. “This is you in your element,” Demi said. “You’d have a hit with a song like that,” Simon said. “You’ve got real guts… We’re watching a star in the making.” Grade: A
12) Jason Brock (”I Believe I Can Fly” R. Kelly /L.A.’s team) – A much better song pick than last week. It’s theatrical and very much in his wheelhouse. I wasn’t too excited at first but he ended strong. “It feels like a Vegas lounge act,” Britney said, in a rare moment of negativity tonight. “Very predictable and very cabaret,” Demi said. His loud, cheesy red outfit doesn’t help. Grade: B
13) Fifth Harmony (”A Thousand Years” Christina Perri/ Simon’s team) – Franken-group opts for balladry this time. Their harmonizing is improving but it’s hard to focus on a group without a lead singer when there are five of them. I’m not sure how they are going to generate votes. “You nailed it,” L.A. said. Grade: B-plus

I just received a phone call that Diamond White was brought back so I’ve tuned in. Saw the ending of Page’s performance. Not surprised they wanted to have another moment like what they had last year going to ??? house saying they made a mistake and bringing her back.

Perhaps it’s my TV set, but I think this is the best Britney looks. Hair looks ok, but more importantly, her makeup is good and she looks rested.

The combination of Demi’s mentoring of Cece and Cece’s losing identity from her stellar voice in the auditions – has put her at the rock bottom of the competition. 2 weeks in a row that featured some bizarre song that doesn’t utilize her vocal skills, and especially poor staging and clothing tonight.
If Jennel isn’t careful, Demi’s mentoring will put her at the bottom next. I like Demi as a judge … in that role … but her mentoring and song choices and staging suggestions are by far the worst.
Some who watched “The Voice ” tonight, said they were getting weary of the long, rambling commentary by the Judges – the show has taken a long road to get down to the 12 that will be named tomorrow night.

I thought last night’s theme on X-F was songs from the movies. But I saw a few that I didn’t recognize from any film (unless it was just background music and not really a featured song – as in opening or end credits)
Maybe Rodney can give us the run down on each song. …Or anyone else who knows which film each selection came from. I just think there were a couple ringers in there.

I thought last nights show was entertaining. Some of it was way over the top. Paige’s entrance was silly. I enjoyed all the groups. That was a first for me. CeCe was horrible. By far worst of the night. Jason and Beatrice wasn’t much better! Not sure the order but they will be the first 3 to go. Jennel has lost the luster for me. I thought she might win it all now I think she’s lucky to make the top 5.
Carly Rose, Vino and Tate were my best 3 vocally although Lyric145 put on the best show. Still have that freaking song in my head. Emblem3 may be good at what they do but it does nothing for me!

Having re-watched the show I think Vino could be this years Josh Krajiik. While I thought he did a great job with When A Man Loves A Woman had I been picking a song for him it would have been Tueplo Honey by Van Morrison. Vocally they’re similar and the song has been used in several movies. It also hasn’t been done in a singing competition show to my knowledge which means the performance wouldn’t be compared to someone elses.
Deirdre, I think Diamond is a great singer however they didn’t do her any favors having her sing a Whitney song. Eventually she may get there vocally (she’s only 13) but she’s not there now. I can see her possibly making the top 5

Hi y’all,
I’m enjoying this season of XF more than last. But I’ve already expressed my view of Simon’s Ego Circus. As for the song used in movies, here we go:
1. American Boy – Obsessed (Beyonce movie)\
2. Take My Breath Away – Top Gun
3. When A Man Loves a Woman – Same named movie (Andy Garcia/Meg Ryan)
4. My Girl/California Girls – a stretch. My Girl was used in the movie of the same name (Macaulay Culkin), and I guess California Girls was in the Katy Perry movie. Ha.
5. Iris – City of Angels (Nicolas Cage/Meg Ryan)
6. I Love Rock and Roll – used in quite a few, including Britney’s own movie, Crossroads (Yes, there is shame in knowing that!)
7. Wanted Dead or Alive – initially used in Young Guns II, also in Rock of Ages
8. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” – Mary Poppins
9. I Have Nothing – The Bodyguard
10. Eye of The Tiger – Rocky III
11. It Will Rain – Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt 1
12. I Believe I Can Fly – Space Jam
13. A Thousand Years – Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt 1

Wait, Star Trek girl did “Eye of the Tiger”? LOL! What was she thinking? I feel cheesy when I play that song on Rock Band 3. It’s one of the cheesiest songs from the 80’s. “The Final Countdown” at least has a nice guitar part, and “We Built this City” has been panned for so long that it is now kind of cool, leaving “Eye of the Tiger” as one of the most laughable songs of a whole decade.

@JTesla, Couldn’t agree more! Eye of the Tiger is a horrible song. CeCe would have been better served singing something along the lines of The Rose. Demi Lovato is getting more and more irritating. She cleary hates her mentees… why else why she make them over and choose bad songs? interrupting Simon and not being ble to take criticism – very immature, Demi.
First singer, Arin, disappeared among his many dancers.
Best thing about Joan of Arc-ey Paige – her costume. She has a sweet little voice, but her enunciation is horrible. Of coursem anyone might have a problemn concentrating on a song when a stranger is slobbering all over her, giving tummy rubs, etc. She also looked like she really regrets shaving her head.
Lyric 145 is still a clown-like novelty act, but I like their energy. They are entertaining… in small doses.
Diamond White was given a bad song. Lazy choice.
She has such a gorgeous smile, I’d like to see her do a happy song.
Cece Frey is pretty much fried at this point. Wrong move to portray herself as a killer from the start (attitude, leopard spots) and this song was just – ugh. Outfit, second worse of the night.
Carly Rose Sonenclar – her little hand over mouth gesture at the end made me melt. Clearly the best “act” in this competition.
Jason Brock – hos outfits are killing him. And song choices.
Fifth Harmony (I thought they were FIT harmony until I saw spelling) impressed me, a lot. This is a group I want to hear again.
Tate Stevens – don;t care for cowboy music, but he did it well.
Jenelle Garcia – another bad make-over. Her real hair was perfectly fine. She can be sexy and cute on her own – hope sombody stops the mentor from suggesting private parts-grabbing.
Vino Alan – great, honest performance of oversung song.
Beatrice Miller – scratchy voice overshadowed by worst outfit of the night. Ragamuffin look suits nobody.
Emblem 3 – boy bands have their fans. I’m not one of them.
G

11:49 am
Yeah, Carly Rose is pretty solid. She’s not my fav, but I can defintely see her in the final 4.
Emblem 3 is another act that’s not a fav of mine, but I think they have the best chance to win.
Tate Stevens is my absolute favorite on the show, and I’m definitely not a county music fan. I was singing Richie Sambora’s part on “Dead or Alive”. I used to play with a band that covered all of Bon Jovi’s songs.
Lyric 145 continues to be a group that ticks me off the most. I guess it’s moreso how Simon is making a fool of their talent. I don’t know if some of you on the blog realize how talented this group is, but they are being challenged every week with poor guidance from Simon. I would have this group ditch the clownwear, and let them be themselves. Suggestions of what they should be performing:
The Fugees, Black Eyed Peas (pre-Fergie), OutKast, Naughty by Nature, Brand Nubian, The Lox, and Wu Tang Clan.

Three 13-year olds and a boyband… clearly this show is skewed for a specific audience.

Diamond is a powerful singer, but was given a song that didn’t suit her AT ALL, then dressed to look like John Travolta’s kid sister from Saturday Night Fever added on to her lookign and sounding weird. That girl has chops. I want a dual between her and Carly Rose. Putting my two favorites up against one another. CeeCee can go home, Jannel can go home, Mr. Entertainment can go home, 5th Harmony can go as well.

To me, Diamond sounded like a very talented 13 year old singing a legendary song that she’s not quite ready for. Wrong song choice for her. There are plenty of other songs that would have suited her better (i.e. “What a Feeling”, Irene Cara).

Pitchy, I’m sure my opinion is clouded by the fact that I do not approve of pitting 13 year olds in an adult competition. For one thing, their voices are still developing. According to my aunt, my mother, at 13, had an angelic voice and did all the church solos. By the time she was 16, her singing voice had gone from angelic soprano to off-key alto. So obviously, I’m not that happy about Carly Rose or Beatrice being in the competition either although, Carly Rose’s voice sounds way more mature than the other two voices.
Plus, I’m always worried about the emotional stability of the very young put into this highly stressful situation. True, some get through it just fine but others end up suffering for years after achieving then losing early fame.
Mostly, it just makes me uncomfortable.

No offense, but it wasn’t even that good of a series, why not try to look like Seven of Nine? Now there is a look that should be copied.

@G, I agree and disagree with you about Lyric145. Simon is not going down the straight hip-hop road. They are suited for that and I think LA feels the same way you do but I don’t think they would last long in the competition doing that. Simon is creating a hip-hop/ performing artist group. While not traditional it is attracting and entertaining a wider audience. I thought if nothing more it was entertaining. Would it sell records? Maybe, maybe not. I would compare them to the rock group KISS. Albeit Kiss is a different genre it’s still the show that entertains. That’s not to say Lyric can’t or won’t sell records. But before you can sell records you have to sell yourself to the public. What better platform to make a name for yourself?

I definitely understand where you’re coming from Deirdre, and I agree that their youth may not have them prepared for the rigors their profession of choice dictates. However, shouldn’t limit their talent just because of their age. At least give them the opportunity. If they crack, they never should have entered the contest. And, I sincerely hope their families told them about the emotional upheavals.

Last night’s performances were a vast improvement over last week’s; and the decision to bring back Diamond was wise. For being as young as she is, she did a great job with that Whitney song. But I agree that Carly Rose has been consistently good, and seems to have a good shot at winning. A coworker at DISH and I have been trying to make predictions about tonight, and we also think that CeCe is in danger. I can’t wait to find out for sure, I am glad that I won’t miss anything with my Hopper from DISH. The 2,000 hours of recording space has been great with my late train, I love that I don’t have to worry about missing a performance. It seems a shame that CeCe will likely be eliminated considering her powerful voice. But if the mentors continue to choose unfitting songs, this will not be the first time it happens.

There are a number of child actors, actresses that sing and do skits in Disney, Nick and other productions. The key is solid parenting, mentoring, educators/tutors, accounting firms, management firms, etc. It’s true though, that often, all of those components do not fall into place, and an impressionable young mind can’t always sort through the emotional passages of living in an isolated “famous kid” – then teen, then adult environment.
Britney herself is unable to manage her affairs, Demi has been in rehab and a number of other child or young stars have later went through serial relationships, divorces and drug or alcohol problems.
That doesn’t mean one of these 13 year-olds can’t have a good career and a good life – but it does give a clear signal that extra caution is needed for the younger talent. And the record companies are only interested in profits,

Vino and Carly Rose were clearly the best last night. Tate should be safe too. I think CeCe will go home. Demi really failed her by giving her a makeover that she didn’t need and by poor song choices. I think Simon remarks were point on regarding Cece. On the Voice, Trevin is clearly the best and should win that show…it isn’t even close.

In truth “ratings ploy” is correct. It’s a ploy to increase ratings…the ploy does not belong to the ratings. You could also say it was Simon’s ploy to increase ratings.

LOL, yes, we know what the ploy itself means, just wanted to be grammatically correct with the correct “possessive” writing style. To be honest, it can be singular possessive “rating’s” or plural possessive “ratings’ ” I think both works. “ratings” is not correct. The fact that you said “Simon’s” ploy shows it being possessive.

“Tate Stevens – don;t care for cowboy music, but he did it well.” – Mercedes, 11:48am
Umm, Mercedes, although the song was featured in a western/cowboy movie (Young Guns II), Wanted Dead Or Alive is NOT a Country song!
K&CF, thanks for the other movie titles. I guess the two selections from Twilight movies explains my earlier bewilderment. (No sarcastic remarks necessary, gang!!)

Very surprised that there are so many Country fans watching the show – although Tate’s last song was not really country – was still delivered in country attire and style.
One of the pluses for him is his performances are not full of flashing siezure-inducing lights and distracting dancers.
Looks like next week will be a fight for survival between CeCe, Arin Ray and Beatrice Miller. Beatrice needs to get rid of the green shoes and silly garb, Arin needs to rely upon the production – because he’s not a great singer comparitively — and CeCe desparately needs a new mentor.

Carly rose is a good singer but she is too Broadway and melodramatic. Lyric 145 is the only act that was orginal and could work in the real world
