Power 96.1 breaks open in first full ratings month; WSB gains with Rush’s arrival

usher power 961

That recent shakeup in Atlanta radio is showing its effects in the ratings.

One station with a new format — the heavily advertised Top 40-based Power 96.1 – broke into the overall top 10 in its first full month of Arbitron ratings, covering Sept. 13 through Oct. 10.

Power, which debuted in late August, finished with a 4.3 share, good for No. 10, just behind Star 94 (4.4) and Q100 (4.5). Those are better numbers than its predecessor rock station, Project 9-6-1, pulled even in its best months.

As a result of Power’s success, rival Q100 dropped from a 5.4 to a 4.5. That’s Q100’s worst overall performance since December 2010. Its 25- to 54-year-old demographic numbers fell 1 share point from 6.0 to 5.0, its lowest since February. But Q100’s 18-34 numbers held steady.

Power’s entry also had an effect on one of its Clear Channel sister stations, Wild 105.7/96.7. Wild started playing more hip-hop to distinguish itself from the more youthful pop-dance sound of Power. Wild slipped from 3.1 to 2.5 last month, its worst month since July 2011.

The more adult-pop oriented stations B98.5 (ranked fifth overall) and Star 94 (ranked ninth) held steady from the previous four weeks, despite all the changes across the radio dial.

Here are other results, based by category:

HIP/HOP

V-103, while in its usual No. 1 spot, also had its worst month since December, falling to an 8.4 share.

Power isn’t directly competing with V-103. But Streetz 94.5, a four-month-old hip hop station on a modest signal, is. Streetz, which added live morning and afternoon jocks on Nov. 1, appeared for the first time on the survey with a 1.1 share – including a 2.6 among 18- to 34-year-olds. Meanwhile, Hot 107.9 held steady, ranking fifth overall and second among the 18-34 segment.

NEWS/TALK

Rush Limbaugh’s arrival at AM 750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB on Oct.1 helped boost the station’s ratings. Over the 10 days measured that Limbaugh was on board, ratings jumped 50 percent compared with to the previous 18 days during the same time period. Previously, Neal Boortz and Clark Howard occupied the 12-3 p.m. time.

WSB’s ratings weakened over the summer but perked up when Limbaugh’s syndicated show arrived from 640/WGST-AM, which changed format to Hispanic sports talk in late September. During the Sept. 13-Oct. 10 period, WSB’s ratings jumped to 6.8 (second place) after scoring a 5.7 (fifth place) in August/September.

All News 106.7, which debuted to soft numbers over the summer, is gradually building audience. Over four months, ratings have edged up from 0.8 to its most recent 1.5.

90.1/WABE, which provides both news and classical music, did well during “Morning Edition,” pulling in a 4.4 share among 25- to 54-year olds, its best in that time slot this year.

ROCK

It’s been crazy times in the rock arena. In addition to Project 9-6-1 demise, 99X was transformed into 98.9/The Bone. Meanwhile, Dave FM’s  final full month of ratings before the switch to sports talk on Oct. 24 showed slippage, falling to a 1.9 after a minor revival over the summer

97.1 The River gained the most from all the changes. The station added more depth to its rock playlist, and pulled in a 5.2 share — its best since Arbitron began measuring listeners via people meters in early 2009. That was good for sixth place. Although the station focuses mostly on rock from the 1970s and 1980s, it even landed in the top 10 among 18- to 34-year-olds.

With Project out, the Bone grabbed some listeners. The Bone more than doubled its ratings from its 99X predecessor: 0.5 to 1.1; and among 18-to 34-year-olds, from 0.9 to 1.5. This is a far cry from what Project was pulling in before it was killed off but the Bone has a much weaker signal.

Rock 100.5 didn’t see much movement, holding at 2.1 for a second month. That’s still the station’s best overall performance since October, 2010. The departure of morning host Kidd Chris at Project didn’t appear to help the Regular Guys immediately. The veteran morning show fell from 3.7 to 3.1 among 25 to 54 year olds but edged up from 3.4 to 3.5 among 18 to 34 year olds.

COUNTRY

Kicks 101.5 edged out 94.9/The Bull for the fifth month in a row overall. But the Bull won the 25-54 battle, 3.7 to 3.4.

CHRISTIAN

Fish 104.7, which plays Christian soft pop, remained consistent, though among 25- to 54-year-olds it had its worst month of the year, ranking 13th with a 3.6 share.  Gospel station Praise 102.5 bounced back from its worst month in years, jumping back from a 3.1 to a 3.8. A year ago, the station was regularly breaking a 6.0 share.

R&B

Majic 107.5/97.5 and Kiss 104.1 are close across the board in chasing leader V-103. Both drew a 6.4 share, a tie for second place. Among 25- to 54-year-olds, Majic had its best month in its history with a 7.0 share, good for second place, ahead of Kiss, with a solid 6.2 share for third place. Syndicated morning host Tom Joyner on Kiss beat Steve Harvey on Majic by a 6.7 to 6.1 share overall but among 25- to54-year olds, Harvey (6.7) edged out Joyner (6.4).

SPORTS TALK

This was the final ratings period before the arrival of  92.9/The Game. 680/The Fan and 790/The Zone were competitive with their typical figures. The Fan, with its stronger signal, finished with a 2.3 share while the Zone pulled in a 1.1. During the day, when The Zone’s signal is much stronger, the two stations are much closer. The Zone’s “Mayhem” morning show, for instance, beat the Fan’s “Rude” show, 1.7 to 1.3. Bell and Archer on The Zone pulled in a 1.8 vs. 1.7 for Chuck and Chernoff (who also had Braves games included in their numbers).

How care there be any rating for a true Rock station when there isn’t one in this market? The Bone’s signal doesn’t have any strength to reach outside the perimeter. And the only Rock that is played is The River, or better known as “The Eagles Channel” and Rock 100.5.can’t go beyond the immaturity factor of TRG, which makes it unlistenable. I quit listening after 10:00, as Atlanta radio is atrocious.

Damn, I’m still sad about losing Dave FM.

Thanks for the heads-up on Streetz 94.5, hopefully I get that signal in my area.

I’ve posted a similiar comment before when the last shake up took place but I will once again reiterate: XM RADIO!!!!!! After Z93, 96 ROCK and Y106 got the boot I switched to XM and haven’t looked, or listened back!!!!!! Many iconic Atlanta radio personalities were shown the door without any warning. They deserved better and Atlanta radio has suffered because of it.

Thank goodness for XM – no longer have to listen to insipid ATL morning shows. Q100’s Bert Show used to be ok, but with the arrival of Kristen that show has jumped the shark. She makes my ears bleed. Childish voice and banter from her.

I am tired of Frank Ski promoting his raggedy restaurant everyday. All he and Wanda do is TALK, TALK, TALK, TALK about themselves as to where the public doesn’t get to call in for no more then 3 seconds and then it’s back to Frank and Wanda talking about themselves again, again and again. When they named the show Frank and Wanda they did not lie. They are #1 because they have a strong signal and folks have no choice but to listen to them even when they don;t want to.

I did not listen to Dave FM a lot because they do not play enough hard rock but I miss the station. It was a music station and I appreciate that. The little bit of sports talk I’ve listened to 92.9 sucked. Maybe we can get Dave back and they will add Govt Mule, Tedeschi/Trucks and Widespread Panic to the playlist to break up all the U2.

If you re a middle aged guy like me and you re not too far from Dahlonega, try Thunder 104.3. Those guys are all over the musical map.

“Bell and Archer on The Zone pulled in a 1.8 vs. 1.7 for Chuck and Chernoff (who also had Braves games included in their numbers).”

No surprise, Chuck & Turnoff are the absolute worst I’ve ever heard on sports talk in a major market. They sound like 2 20-year olds sitting at Tilted Kilt bar with drafts and chicken wings. Worse, they act as if they’re offering golden nuggets of information that only they have figured out. At least the other sports shows seem to understand that it’s about entertainment and general discussion and not about unleashing new insight that had never been uncovered before. They are horrible!

Rush is the number one talk show guy in history. Must be doing something right. Can 16 million folks be all wrong? Whenever the conservative talkers are discussed on this and other blogs, no one hardly ever comes to their defense. I guess it’s fashionable to criticize them. “Let me show how chic I am by criticizing Rush! Yeah, that’s it!” What a bunch of losers you whiners are!! The guy is a ratings powerhouse. Has been for over 20 years. Deal with it.

WSB had a 6.8 SHARE not RAITING. Different jargon. 106.7 went from a .8 SHARE to a 1.5. Again, not rating, but share. Not to nit pick too closely, just saying, there is a difference in rating and share as defined by Arbitron.

The only 3 Atlanta radio stations that I seem to care about are… News-Talk WSB, Star-94, and 97.1 The River. I can’t afford a Sirius-XM subscription.

Clear Channel (or in the opinions of some… Cheap Channel) really did ruin a lot of its radio stations…

94.9FM – Peach and Lite FM disappeared, and we ended up with country music station The Bull.
96.1FM – 96-Rock and Project-9-6-1 disappeared, and we’ve since ended up with top 40 music station Project 96.1.
AM 640 – The iconic News-Talk station took a nose dive, then it disappeared, and we now have Spanish-language ESPN.

Atlanta radio used to be very good in the old days… and it seems that Atlanta radio has become a shell of its former self.

We’ve seen numerous radio talents come and go… Star-94 and B-98 disbanded Steve & Vikki… B-98 also disbanding Kelly & Alpha… Star-94 disbanded Cindy & Ray… Long-time morning show personality Rhubarb Jones was let go after 23 years at 106.7… Randy & Spiff have jumped from station to station (Fox-97, Cool 105.7, Lite FM, and True Oldies), and they kept getting the boot… Long-time afternoon show personality Kelly McCoy pretty much saw the writing on the wall, and left B-98 on his own accord… Long-time talk radio personality Neal Boortz is retiring at the end of the year.

What a load of B.S. Your station did not surpass the Project.. for it was heard in other freaking countries..Pop isn’t the only music.. wait Pop isn’t music.. just computer mix with maybe some singers.. can’t wait till the monopoly of Clear ,falls when they pass the bill to eliminate your power.. Take pop and plug your hole..
