‘The Walking Dead’ season 3, episode 4 recap: ‘Killer Within’ – No character is safe!

This recap is filled with major spoilers so if you don’t want to know what happens before you’ve seen it, skip this pronto.
It’s only episode four of the third season and “The Walking Dead” tortured us with not just one but TWO major deaths.
This is the zombie apocalypse, not a “Friends” episode, that’s for sure. And the producers don’t let up intermingling tragedy with action. During the final 45 minutes, you hardly have a moment to breathe.
Someone is trying to sabotage the prison by opening a door to let them in. We don’t see who it is. A spy from Woodbury? Someone we haven’t met yet? We learn soon enough.
The two prisoners – Axel and Oscar – who had agreed earlier to Rick’s deal to stay in their part of the prison are freaked out. Too many ghosts, too many former dead colleagues to grapple with. They want to join Rick’s team. Rick isn’t going for it. T-Dog wouldn’t mind having them but nobody else is thrilled by the prospect, even Daryl, who said he could have easily ended up in prison himself.
The prisoners decide to leave the prison at a future date, while Axel keeps trying to sell himself as worthy of staying with the team, falling on deaf ears.
Loading ...Back to Woodbury. Michonne inspects one of the turret trucks that the Governor had captured. She sees bullets and blood, evidence that perhaps the Governor and his men had killed them. Her suspicions are warranted, of course. “If only we got there sooner,” the Governor said, lying through his teeth. “And you were with us.”
“Lots of bullet holes. You think biters figured out how to use weapons?” she says.
The Governor is unfazed.
“They must have been [can't tell what he said] by bandits weeks ago,” he says. “It’s ugly out there. You know that better than anyone.”
She then brings up another sore point: Wells, the surviving military guy, “didn’t make it,” she heard. (Hmmm… wonder why?)
Hershel gets up from the bunk and is able to walk on crutches. He goes outside. Daryl, Rick, T-Dog and Glenn are moving vehicles to position them properly for a quick escape. The women, plus Carl and Hershel, are seemingly safe in the prison yard. But the saboteur earlier had opened a gate so walkers arrive.
It’s chaos as the survivors seek safety spots. Some have better luck than others. Hershel and his daughter Beth are okay.
But others don’t get off scot free, that’s for sure. Our buddy T-Dog gets bitten by a walker in the shoulder. He knows he’s a goner but he and Carol keep trying to find an escape. They fail. He gets chewed up. So Dallas, GA’s IronE Singleton’s gig is over after two seasons and four episodes.
What’s worse, the saboteur had set off the alarms, which draws more walkers.
Oscar (the stoic prisoner) knows where to go to turn them off. Daryl and Rick make it to the electric room with Oscar. But guess who’s in there? Surprise! It’s Andrew, the prisoner Rick thought had been eaten by walkers in episode two. Andrew got out! How he got away, I have no idea.
Andrew attacks Rick. Fortunately, Daryl knocks Andrew down. But Oscar gets the gun. Things don’t look so hot for Rick. Andrew encourages his fellow prisoner Oscar to kill Rick so they can re-take the prison.
But Oscar figures where he might have a better shot at survival: joining Rick’s crew. So he kills Andrew. Oscar earns Rick’s loyalty!
Rick turns off the alarm.
Meanwhile, after running to escape the walkers and finding a safe room, Lori goes into labor. Maggie and Carl are with her. Lori is losing too much blood. She can’t do a vaginal birth. The only way the baby could live is for Maggie to cut her open, which given the circumstances was a death sentence. Lori wants it that way. She knows she is losing too much blood and figures she is going to die anyway. So she says goodbye to Carl and passes after Maggie opens her up and gets the baby out. The baby lives! But Carl has to kill his mom with a bullet before Lori turns. At least they don’t show that on camera.
Rick and Co. find the remains of T-Dog and give him a moment of silence. They enter the prison yard to find Hershel and Beth and lots of dead walkers. Then Carl and Maggie arrive with the baby sans Lori. When Rick figures out what happens, he wails and collapses while everyone else stays frozen. Sniff.
Where is Carol?
Now I know why I didn’t see T-Dog and Lori when I visited the set during episode nine.
I’m sure it’s fair (or unfair) to note that Oscar effectively has replaced T-Dog as the token black dude on the show, eh?

One of the best episodes of the season so far. The deaths were extreme, and the aftermath even more so. Social media was abuzz with my friends regretting all the Lori and T-Dog jabs. There are still people in the blogosphere that swear that Carl didn’t shoot Lori in the head, it’s hilarious. I wonder if the poster from previous weeks that loved the Governor will return with their political troll posts?

Poor Rick now has to raise Shane’s baby by himself. I was rather shocked by this 2-major-death episode.
At the very least, T Dog now won’t have to wind up being The Governor’s new errand boy when the prison gets raided.
Now that they are reunited in the afterlife, and without Rick around, do you think Lori has resumed bending over while face-down in the grass for Shane?
Could the virus have caused Shane to be re-incarnated in his baby?

Yes, it was certainly an emotional episode (RIP T-Dog) but I found it really offputting for Rick to completely ignore Carl when he learned Lori was dead. Then again, I noticed early on when the zombies first attacked that as he (Rick) was running to get to the gang, he was screaming for Lori, not Carl.
I’m not sure if this was on purpose to set up some tension between Rick and Carl, but it REALLY bothered me that he didn’t show any kind of concern for his kid. Well, either of his kids (if we’re going with the assumption that the new baby is Rick’s, not Shane’s).
Other than that, it was a great episode. And if I’m honest, I teared up a bit at Rick’s reaction. But poor Carl. And for that matter, poor Carol! Where is she???

Glad Lori is gone. Wish Carl was next. Hated to lose T-Dog. Looks like they are not following the comic very well. If they follow it even remotely, you are about to see that one of the convicts is an evil, dangerous man. I also think the Governor is drugging Andrea with that “special tea” he’s been giving them. It’s going to lead to conflict between her and Michonne.

Lori had it coming, and too bad for T-Dog…never really got to develop his character fully. At least we understand why Lori died — all sorts of freudian and “Biblical” innuendoes to her demise — but T-Dog? At least he went out swinging and a hero. I haven’t read the comics, so I have no idea on how any fo the characters have developed and fallen, versus the comics.
Poor Carl, he’s about to turn into a “Darth Vader” of sorts… Shane dead at his hands; mom dead at his hands; and willl be reminded of that everyday with his new sibling. And, how much attention with the baby get and Carl not get — as he slips further into whatever black hole he is already swirling around in.
Whew! Great episode — can’t wait for next week!

Am I the only person who thinks the baby might end being “adopted” by Glenn & Maggie? Their relationship is obviously progressing. She’s got a strong caretaker/maternal/optimist streak to her, but has said she didnt want to bring kids into “this” world or put herself at risk with a pregnancy. Rick’s decision to “accept” the baby as his was in the interest of his reconcilation with Lori, which is no longer a factor. In fact, Lori’s dying to have the baby might even spur some resentment toward the infant, if he begins to ponder whether it’s actually his. Plus he has Carl to single parent now, as well as leading the group. Seems unlikely he’d be able to spare the time an infant’s demands would place on him. You know the women will end up tending to the child, just out of logistics, and Glenn + Maggie + baby would give us an intact “family” unit, that the show no longer has, having lost Lori & Sophia. Just wondering.

Don’t complain about the survey being where it is. Any intelligent person would know that if they click on the front pages’s cleverly titled, “What happened on TWD last night?” that there might be information pertaining to what happened. If you are complaining, then it is your fault. Consider the link’s name to be a suggestion as to what might be there.
Glad Lori is dead – she was a waste. It was good to see Rick show his feelings for her albeit in a zombie-calling scream. Carl expressed that he cared to his mom, which was nice. Lori’s words to her son did not ring hollow to me.
I love T-Dog! I am so mad he is gone, but at least I don’t have to worry about what Merle will do to him if they met up again. So the “token” black guy is no longer T-Dog but this other guy now? What’s up with that town? I don’t recall seeing many black people there either – except the one that keeps eyeing up Michon.
I do not understand HOW that “extra” prisoner got away safely from those other zombies after being locked in. I had to try to convince my husband that that was the same guy.

Gut wrenching episode. I knew T Dog was gone when he had more then two lines and more than seven words. Then he also had a real opinion. I said my goodbye then. Oh well, he was never developed. We don’t know anything about his past other than he had black parents. Can’t wait to see Morgan again–well that would mean Oscar would have to go. All of this caused by little scary Andrew.
The Lori scene was a tough one. I was very sad for Carl. Then Rick in the end caused me to tear up. Wow. Great show everyone.

I didn’t think Rick was disregarding his son as much as he was grieving and going through deep regret for not having resolved his issues with Lori and then finding out Andrew, whom he’d locked out in the walker yard, was responsible. Bless his heart.

What Lori said to Carl in her final moments was, “Always do what’s right, even in this kind of world.” I think she was bemoaning the fact that she cheated with Shane, that if she’d done what was right, things would have been different between her and Rick in the last few months of her life. Figure it out timing wise. She and Shane probably started getting it on just a few weeks after the fall of civilization. I think that’s one of the points the writers were trying to make. She loved Rick and she loved Carl, but she took up with Shane too soon. Lori’s gone and not coming back as a Walker.

SPOILERS: Great episode… Lori’s death was timely and to be honest I never liked her character but her death still packed an emotional hit. When she walked out with Herschel and Rick looked at her you could tell that he was ready to forgive her. In fact it seemed as though Rick were almost willing to become the innocent guy he was for seasons 1 and most of season 2 but then it all went down hill and Rick was given a lesson in what happens when you dont finish business as the one prisoner he let run away came back to nearly destroy everything. The reaction by Rick to the death of Lori, the knowledge that Carl had to killer her, the death T Dog and maybe even Carol brought him to his knees because he really does care and because he knew that it it was to some degree his fault. Cant wait to see what Rick becomes in this aftermath? Does he return to compassion or does he embrace the cutting edge of the knife more than ever and which will best serve the group when they encounter the Governor?
Speaking of the Governor, Andreas storyline is a little absurd, her crush to obvious and her unwillingness to trust the one person whose instincts kept her alive for 8 months is a fall back on her season 1 idiocy. The fact that she has been so completely seduced by his nature is a pretty clear indication that when it really falls apart Michone will be the one to suffer most for her mistake.
And, off topic somewhat but Michone gets better every second. He accusatory side glances feel like daggers even through the TV screen. She feels like a caged cat more dangerous than ever but this cage belongs to the governor and he may be more dangerous than any walker she has faced yet!

Why is everybody thinking that Rick is wailing because of the death of Lori. Sure that is part of it, but it was the moment he looked at Carl that he bellowed. He is grief stricken over what has happened to Carl and that it was him that had to experience this and not Rick. He knows that he failed to protect Carl.

When Daryl goes out in search of formula, he’s gonna get spooked by a noise and wind up killing Merle when he mistakes him for a “walker”. When the “Gov” sends a search party, that’s when the “tea-drugged” Stepford residents of Woodbury will discover the prison!
Everyone will blame the baby crying as the reason they are “discovered”!
Michonne will somehow end up being the one to cut the baby’s head off!

It was tragic that T Dog died, and (even if I didn’t like her) shocking that Lori dies. I think the reason they did this though is to bring realism to it. It’s a zombie apocalypse; not everyone is gonna survive. It’d look a bit too far fetched (as far fetched as zombies can be) if all the good people survived.

So sad about T Dogg, one of my favorite characters, I did not see that coming. I dont think that Lori is dead, no way they will actually kill off 2 people. I think that in the next episode Rick will go to see her and he will revive her in some way. I think Carl may have shot her but if he did he didnt shoot her in the head. I think she will pull through ad they will become more of a couple again. I dont really like her that much though would have rather kept T Doff but no way hes coming back now:(

Hate to see T-Dog go. Iron Singleton seemed to be sad during the interview on the recap show, Talking Dead. Just didn’t make a whole lot of sense to kill him off, because T-Dog had as much survival skills as Daryl. Is it really a coincedence that Ocsar shows up and T-Dog is gone?
Glad to see that wrench Lori go down. She has been a liability, and was the source of a lot of group drama and tension. Deuces!
Carol is gone. They will probably find her like Sophia. She was a liability too.
Michonne needs to watch herself with the Governor. If he finds out she is on to him, it’s lights out for her too. She should leave Andrea with the Gov. Andrea is just hot in the pants and she’s tired of running.
Meryl will only accept “no” for a short while, before he and the Gov bump heads.
That was a whole lot for Rick to process at once.

I think that Oscar is going to be Tyreese from the comic books(not literally but serve the same role), so have hope maybe we finally get to see a character that is strong and almost coequal to Rick.
I was really heartbroken to see Lori die, people forget so many women died in childbirth in the old days, it was a death sentence for Lori either way, at least she could keep the baby alive.
Tdog, just when I was finally start to understand your character, you die, sorry to see you go.

good points. There is also a good parallel to be drawn between Andrew and Randall. To Shane’s credit, he kept insisting that Randall needed to be killed and he did it. The unfinished business always comes back to haunt in this show. The walker Carl taunted that later killed Dale, and now Andrew (whom in Rick’s defense should have been walker food) idiotically opens the fence for walkers and lures them with deer.

In lieu of breast milk, perhaps this baby will be able to live off Zombie Blood.

Tough episode for sure. I’ve been thinking how awful it was killing Lori like that. They Should have stayed with the comic version. I am also thinking this is about the MONEY paid to the actors. They must be fighting over parts in the series. Lori got to costly, so they killed her off. The baby survives, because it won’t cost anything. Carol is missing now, no salary to pay there. And, the rest of you creeps commenting about RACISM. Get over your selves. This is about the HUMAN RACE, not color. No wonder you got enslaved! Dumb asses! I’m predicting this here first (as far as I know). There will be an offshoot series made from this soon, called “Woodbury” about a post appocolyptic town. My idea! I think Oscar will be seriously mistaken if he thinks he’s now “in” with the Grimes Gang because he killed Andrew. If anything, Rick is going to be more skeptical of him. I mean, if he can kill Andrew that easily, a guy he spent months with in the prison when the outbreak happened. Who’s to say he won’t be looking to take out Rick later. I gurantee it, Rick is going to see Oscar as a threat and kill him. Oscar will be the next one to go. This won’t be a hard decision for Rick either. He’s going to blame himself for the deaths of Lori and T-Dog by not killing Andrew when he had the chan1ce.

I am so disturbed by last nights episode. Lori’s death totaly stole T-dog’s thunder. T dog didnt sacrifice himself, he was already bit, he was already going to die regardless. On another note, Nobody even checked Lori’s pulse. What if she wasnt dead and Carl’s ol trigger happy self shot her. They could have atleast attempted to save her. I guess thats what bothers me the most, there was no attempt to save her, and she was shot by her own son before I believed she was even dead, she was just probably passed out from the pain and shock. Carl is a little jerk.

Figured the writers had to do away with T Dog…especially with Merle coming for his brother. But it would’ve made for an interesting storyline for Daryl. I bet he’s next.

This Episode was just amazing… the title encompasses so many meanings… “Killer within” … The first thing I thought of when I watched Lori dying for her baby – was that literally she had a killer within – a baby that was going to kill her in order to survive. On the other hand, “killer within” could also talk about the dormant virus that is in everyone and how when they die, will all become killers/walkers as well. The last interpretation I got about this title- was the governor. Inside of his peaceful town of Woodbury, everyone thinks that life is normal and at peace (including our oblivious Andrea), but in reality, there is the most dangerous killer in there- which in fact is the governor himself. There were so many more moments- that could fit perfectly with the title but these connections made the episode so thrilling, so appropriate and so depressing. I actually couldn’t breathe for almost 45 minutes…it was so suspenseful. This is by far the best episode I have seen- beautiful acting, heart-wrenching climaxes, and something to look forward to. Maybe it’s gonna slow down a bit now.

T Dog was a useless character. Actually the writers didn’t give him much of a character. Not sure why he was even in it. Lori’s death was useless. They should have let the baby die. Sorry but a baby without its mother’s milk in a zombie apocalypse was a stupid stupid choice. Again the writers did something really stupid here. Lastly, when did Andrea get so weak? Samurai Soul Sister is the best new character so far. Lot’s can be done with her character if the writers get with it.

Given the makeup of Atlanta, I half-expected to go to the AJC site today to read about rioting in the streets following the death of T-Dog.
Hopefully, those people will save all their blind rage & rioting for Election Night when “Darth Teleprompter” joins the unemployment lines.

Ugh!! Two deaths in one episode! I hope Laurie wasnt offed and is somehow going to be stitched back together by the MIA Carol. Im assuming Axel is going to end up being the evil psycho in the prison (isnt it always the white boys anyway?).
And POOR RICK!! He tried so hard to protect his wife and child and she still ended up dying. He nailed the hell out of that role (I hope he gets an award). From the look of the previews it seems he may be about to get a little ‘blood drunk’ on some zombies.
Ive never read the comics, and I sort of want to now….but I also like the ‘not knowing’ of it all too. At least this time I wont have to wait weeks like I did after Sophia’s devastating death. This episode and that episode where by far the most emotional for me…

Just read an interview with the woman who plays Lori. She said she was aware that her character in the graphic novel dies so was not surprised and even encouraged tha writers to go ahead and do it:
‘You have to. Lori’s death does something to Rick that you cannot do any other way. Eventually, you’re going to have to do it.

Wow, didnt expect those see those deaths! Amazing episode! My GF who never cries to any show teared up twice during this episode (Lori’s speach to Carl and Ricks breakdown at the end)!
Dont beleive Carl shot Lori. They didnt show it yet show all the other deaths. Also, why would they show in the last episode Carol practicing on a walker how to give a C-section and she is nowhere to be found at the end of this episode (maybe she found the room with Lori still alive and stitches her up? Hmmmmm).

Lori is not dead. There was an entire episode where Carol was trying to learn how to perform an c-section. She even had Glenn go out and choose a walker for her. Remember, that the show never leaves loose ends. They wouldn’t go through that entire episode without leaving some sort of payoff.
Carol will stich up Lori. And if you follow the comic series, this isn’t how Lori dies. The Governor’s army has an part in her fate.

2 big things I noticed: 1) they didn’t show Lori die. The show hasn’t been shy about showing the death of anyone, and as big a part of the story Lori is I don’t think Carl had it in him to kill her. 2) They just assume Carol’s dead – the person whose been training to deal with Lori. My guess is she hears the gunfire, makes it back and saves Lori, Rick and her make up, and the Grimes family is restored in time to take on the Governer

This show is honestly the best show ever. Every conversation is important. Like in season 2 when rick is talking to Carl about death and how everyone is going to die eventually. I cried when T dog died and almost when Lori did. I hated Lori but it was still sad to see her go. CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT EPISODE HOPEFULLY ITS BETTER THAN THE LAST, BUT THAT’S GONNA BE HARD TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE THE DIRECTION OF THE WAY THE SHOW IS GOING THE PLOT THICKENS. IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE IF LORI WERE REALLY DEAD AND COULD SHE POSSIBLE COME BACK …AND WHERE IS CAROL I HOPE THEY DONT LINGER HER STORYLINE ON FOR A LONG TIME GET ON WITH IT.
