‘Real Housewives of Atlanta,’ season 5, episode 1 recap: Security!

The new cast member/model/actress/producer/former Miss USA provides ample moments of bitchiness tonight, providing “Real Housewives of Atlanta” fans an appetizer of what’s to come season five.
Otherwise, this felt like a “catch up” episode after several months absence. Kim Zolciak is pregnant again and having house troubles to boot. (She got a quote for how much to move her 17,000-square-foot house of stuff into storage for 120 days: $101,000! Who’s moving her house? Donald Trump?)
Phaedra Parks is trying to expand into dog funerals as she continues to get into mortuary services despite the fact she is afraid of dogs. Lean into your discomfort Phaedra!
Cynthia Bailey’s modeling agency is plugging along. We also see her baby’s daddy wanting their daughter to go back to a regular school instead of home schooling. Cynthia, who wants to keep her daughter home schooled, loses that argument.
Kandi Burruss has got a new boo, who was working in production for “Real Housewives,” and she has gotten herself a monstrous “dream house” she picked up from foreclosure.
NeNe Leakes, who surprisingly returned for another season, is reconciling with ex-husband Gregg Leakes while hobnobbing in Hollywood thanks to her new role on “The New Normal.” (She tries to impress “New Normal” producer Ryan Murphy by trying to reach Tyler Perry. But the number is disconnected.)
But let’s focus a bit more on Kenya.
She moved from Los Angeles and has a boyfriend she’d like to be her hubby one day. “I am ready to walk down the aisle and have children,” she tells V-103’s Ryan Cameron. “Love is in the air. This is a new chapter.”
As noted, she’s a former Miss USA who may or may not have had a bigger modeling career than Cynthia. Cynthia is working with Jet Magazine to find a “Jet Beauty of the Week” and invited Kenya to be one of the judges. Bailey says they are looking for curves and a big posterior.
The producers edited it so Kenya comes off as especially mouthy. “I was looking for someone who reminded me of myself,” Kenya says. “Sexy, strong and really represents black women well.”
We hear a few nice things she says such as: “I”m not gay but that’s pretty hot.”
But then the mean girl comes out.
“Have you ever seen me in a magazine?” she asks another model wannabe at one point. The poor woman hesitates, clearly not having a clue who Kenya is, and looks to Cynthia for guidance. “I”m the one who asked you the question,” Kenya says. “Look at me.”
“I was looking for an Adam’s apple,” she says at another point about a woman she thought looked a bit guy-ish.
Cynthia is annoyed by Kenya’s antics. “We’re not here to tear anybody down. That’s pointless and it’s meanspirited.”
“I’m not trying to be the mean girl but why are you here?” she says to another hapless model.
“Yo, man, you gotta cut it out,” another judge says.
“Is this strip club Jet?” she says to another woman, who shows her plumber’s crack. And Kenya is displeased while Cynthia takes it with aplomb. She begins throwing off crack references. “That is inappropriate and I am offended,” she announces.
“Now people from Jet are uncomfortable,” Cynthia says. And she thinks Kenya is being a hypocrite given some of the modeling gigs she’s done. “Real Housewives” editors helpfully show two of the revealing cover shots.
Carlton, Cynthia’s assistant, is getting annoyed with Kenya. He tells her to chill out. She takes offense, wondering who he is. “Step off!” she says. “Security!”
Some big dude pops out of nowhere to push Terrence away from Kenya. “I always have security with me,” she explains. “People are crazy.” (Really? Is she Halle Barry all of a sudden?)
Cynthia finally steps into the fray. “This is not about trying to insult these women. That’s not what the Bailey Agency is about. Or Jet magazine.”
“My criticism is only to help,” Kenya says, defending herself, “If someone hadn’t taken me aside and shown me the correct way to dress for auditions, I would never book a job.”
When the finalists are presented, Kenya stands up and compliments them. Cynthia, insulted, stands up next and notes that this IS the Bailey Agency, ahem. “This is my school,” she said.
“Cynthia just mimicked everything I said,” Kenya later says. “It’s like she doesn’t have an original thought… There’s a possibility that Cynthia is a little intimidated by jme.”
“She is disrespecting the school. She’s disrespecting that I’m the boss,” says Cynthia, who doesn’t appear intimidated at all.
“If Kenya comes for me, I’m coming for Kenya,” Cynthia says. “We can do this all day long like a tennis court. My court, your court. Let’s go!”
If you are wondering about the other new cast member, Porsha Williams Stewart, she doesn’t show up yet. You’ll see her later in the season.
TRAILER for next week: NeNe is at a Pride festival. The ladies want to hold her a party. Kim gets a beautiful bracelet. Kenya wants to know to a bit about her boyfriend, who admits to having dated Kandi once. Kim and NeNe run into each other. Cynthia is a bit defensive about her friendship with NeNe, who is getting to know Kenya at the party.

I was too busy watching Kim’s husband Kroy bier an #71 on his way to a Pro Bowl Season this year. Kroy is showing everyone that he is the real thing as a Pro Bowler. he is having the best year of his career because he has a loving an supportive wife and a happy home life with 4 kids he adores.
I was watching his team go 8-0.
Without Kim the show will be nothing. Only Kandi and Phadrea keep it real. They made a mistake of getting rid of Sherri Whitfield who is niece, and shower up at Riverwood to her son’s games. Then again she is raising good kids who get along with all types of kids and don’t steal razors from Walmart like NeNe’e.
I guess it was cheaper for NeNe to keep Greg then Divorce him.

I’m elated for Kandi. Todd is a handsome man and seems to have a good personality as well. I wish them the best.
Kim’s comments towards Kandi’s home were crass.
HeHe and that longer wig–Wow, is all I can say. She went from moose to horse. I concur with a previous comment, Phaedra, please do something with that press and curl. Please go see Lawrence or any of a number of other good stylists in Atlanta.

I, like everyone else, knows that this is strickly “entertainment”. However, can it at least be entertaining and NOT degrading?!??! I agree with one of the other commentors that Kim is simply “hating” on Khandi because Khandi is a GREAT manager of her money. And to be able to pay cash for a house like that?!?? She could certainly teach Kim a few things about home management. But then again, Kim has never “worked” for her money; correction, she works on her back, doing nothing BUT birthing babies. Cynthing needs to grow a spine. No way I would have let Kenya Doodle come into my business thinking she’s running the show; and then as Cynthing mentioned, you don’t want to be mean-spirited to anyone. If they are not a good fit, then just say thanks for coming and maybe next time. Ne ne had better stoke her cash away, cause the chick from Athens ain’t gonna last forever. You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t tak the country out of the girl, no matter what the bank account says.

Who then heck in LA told Kenya that she’s ‘all that’. Atl is the place to let her know she’s not. The Show needs drama and she’ll provide it for sure but Cynthia is being classy tougher this season.

Just when I thought that I could not stomach another reality show, I actually tuned in to watch this one. I agree, please bring back Marlo, if only for an episode to get Ms. Kenya straight. Kandi, Kandi, Kandi, what are you doing still playing house. I’m sure that your relationship would be just as strong and continue to grow if he had his own place. I just couldn’t see doing this, especially in front of your daughter. Totally not a good look.
Before it is all said and done, Kim might need to rent a room at your house in the “HOOD.” And what does Sweetie know? The child can’t even pick out a shade of lipstick that goes with her complexion.
Phaedra, do you. Cynthia, do you. NeNe, glad you came to the realization that you are not a hot commodity and went back to Greg. Everyone could see that Mr. Italian was just blowing smoke up your behind. As for the other new housewife, Hosea is turning over in his grave!

Cynthia and Kenya are attractive women especially considering the fact they are middle aged black women. They are not overweight and are in shape. The rest of the women on this show need to lose weight. They represent the typical fat , obese black women who is unhealthy and overweight but think she is all that.

Black men are not the least desired. Enigmatically they are the most desired notwithstanding the fact that they are in general uneducated , under or unemployed , irresponsible , unloyal , etc.I believe it is because they are physically superior to all other men.You must admit to most black and nonblack women think black men are the sexiest men in the world. It is physical because in general black men do not offer much else.

Last night’s episode should be retitled, “How NOT to Behave Ungraciously in the South”.
Kim, bad form for being so negative to your friend about her new house. It’s her house, her taste, and she’s just moving in. You owe her a housewarming present and an apology, Kroy would expect better of you.
New Housewife who’s never been married, has no kids, and has no manners and is from out of town: Amazon.com has some really excellent books on good behavior. You can be sassy, you can be outrageous, and you can be a little naughty, but in the ATL, it’s not acceptable to display the level of insulting rudeness on display on last night’s episode. It’s one thing to quietly take a young aspiring model aside and offer honest advice, it’s another to humiliate them in front of a crowd. Your aunt must have been really disappointed. I would strongly recommend some apologies and perhaps offer to give free advice sessions to the very girls you felt the need to cut so deeply.

@Tyrone: So Ne Ne is representing all black women? I’m 5′3, 118 lbs, have my own business, and am neither loud nor angry (a definite no-no in my profession). Ok I am big boned, but trust when I say that NeNe creature does not represent the typical black woman but maybe those are the types that populate your world. Maybe you spend too much time at strip clubs. And here’s some FYI: Men in my part of the world (Hawaii) love Black women because of our curves, independence, cooking and how we “throw it down”. So much for your “lack of desirability” theory!

It’s so unfortunate that the RHOA will be tainted with the new ladies. What happen to the usual “Narrative. The show was very, very different with false acting and arguing, similar to Basketball Wives show, which never carried an intelligent narrative. Phaedra has good conversation, Kandi carries herself well, Cynthia has class, Nene has the personality and can be outrageous at times but is milder and more lady like this season. She should remarry her husband as God would have her to do and ignor the opposite responses. But, please BRAVO, we realize it’s about the ratings, $$$, but why mess up this show, bringing Kenya and the other girl on ? I only watch to see Phaedra, Apolo, Nene and Greg, classy Cynthia and Peter. and of course Kandi & family.
