Eight months after Whitney Houston’s tragic death at the Beverly Hilton on the eve of the Grammy Awards, Lifetime tonight is introducing a show focused on the Houston family members as they grapple with her death.

In an interview from her home in Alpharetta, sister-in-law and Whitney’s manager Patricia Houston, an executive producer of ‘The Houstons: On Our Own,” deflected criticism that the show exploits Whitney’s death for their gain. She said the family has tried several reality shows over the years but nothing had gotten to air – until this one.

Then again, the only reason this series exists is because Whitney is dead, similar to the short-lived A&E series in 2009 about the Jackson brothers after Michael died that lasted only six episodes.

“Cameras have been on us for many years,” Patricia said. “We’re a strong family…The public knows about us. It’s nothing new, nothing new at all. It …

Watch the new ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ season 5 trailer

I’ve spoken to the two new cast members of  “Real Housewives of Atlanta” and will post the interviews next week before the Nov. 4 fifth season debut.

Bravo has released an extended trailer featuring model, actress and producer Kenya Moore and Porsha Williams Stewart, the grand-daughter of civil rights icon Hosea Williams. (You’ll also see V-103>’s Ryan Cameron for a hot second.)

And while Kim Zolciak didn’t make the cast photo, she is in the trailer. Moore told me Kim will be in the show more in the earlier part of the season before the baby came along.

Kenya appears to be the focal point of conflict this season and Phaedra Parks even says she may be “bi polar.” She is seen arguing with Kandi Burruss, Phaedra and Porsha. She is seen being asked if she had taken her meds. She also appears to have a thing for Phaedra’s boo Apollo.

Porsha has a famous husband in former Steeler Kordell Stewart, who has so …

Dish Network customers can watch ‘Walking Dead’ again; Andrew Lincoln talks about the season

The 14 million households that have Dish Network were able to watch “The Walking Dead”  in time last night for the second episode. (AMC made the episode available to Dish Network customers online for the opener.)

AMC finally resolved its rather complicated months-long tussle with Dish Network over rates and in a sense, an unrelated lawsuit.

Dish has stood as the lowest cost option among satellite and cable land operators but it also means it’s played hardball with cable networks. During the dispute, AMC has encouraged people for months to sign on to other operators, even creating a zombie for president who’s entire campaign was focused around the fact Dish didn’t carry “The Walking Dead.”

More details here
.

Ratings last night fell off from the whopping 10.9 million opener to 9.5 million, still a huge number. In general, that’s a typical drop off for a second episode but it also includes Dish Network subscribers unavailable last week. We’ll have to see how episode 3 holds …

‘Idol’ ad ratings take a nosedive; ‘X Factor’ renewed for third season

For five years, advertisers paid more for 30 seconds on ‘American Idol’ than any other show.

Not anymore.

Ad Age, in a poll, reports that “Idol” rates dropped 30 percent (about equal to the actual ratings drop), from $502,900 to $340,825 per 30-second ad.

Tops now is NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,’ averaging $545,145.

Generally, ratings on the broadcast networks this fall continue to decline sharply, especially among younger viewers.

I anticipate “Idol” should match ratings in January compared to a year ago when it launches its 12th season with all the buzz and hype of the new judges, but whether it can hold them depends wholly on the talent once we get to the live shows.

Fox has renewed ‘X Factor’ for a third season despite sharply lower ratings from season one now that it’s up against “The Voice.”

The press release was packed with hyperbole. Mike …

Justin Bieber’s ‘As Long As You Love Me’ top song in Atlanta radio

Justin Bieber’s ‘As Long As You Love Me” is the top song in Atlanta radio, bumping Ellie Goulding’s month-long stay with “Lights.”

This is Bieber’s first chart topper in Atlanta, with the credit going primarily to two Clear Channel stations: the new Power 96.1 played it a whopping 141 times while its sister station Wild 105.7 added another 125. Q100 spun it 23 times.

I can’t say this is necessarily a coincidence, but Bieber is headlining the first Power 96.1 Jingle Ball in Atlanta at Philips Arena Dec. 12.

Power 96.1 only aired one other song remotely close to that of Bieber’s hit the past week: Maroon 5′s “One More Night” was played 127 times.

Dave FM has less than 48 hours before CBS pulls the plug for sports talk. Margot Smith, the program director, continued to add new music the past two weeks, including eight new …

This Wednesday, NBC’s remaining “Law & Order” series “Special Victims Unit” celebrates its 300 episode in its 14th seasons. That’s a lot of murder and really sordid (though never seen) sex!

On Sunday, CBS’s lighter-toned “The Mentalist” hits 100 with a flashback episode.

Meanwhile, Whitney Houston’s family members quickly signed a deal for a Lifetime reality show this Wednesday featuring how they are coping with Houston’s death. Most live locally. You can decide yourself if this is compelling reality TV or just a little icky.

And for the politically minded, there’s one more presidential debate Monday night, so fans of “Mike & Molly,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Castle” and “Revolution”? Your shows are off this week.

“Dancing With the Stars” 8 p.m. ABC — Bristol Palin’s fan base last week couldn’t keep her going into week five.

‘The Walking Dead’ recap, season 3, episode 2 (’Sick’): whither Hershel?

the-walking-dead-preview-inmates

Five prisoners survived the zombie apocalypse – until Rick Grimes & Co. came along.

By the end of the hour, only two remained alive.

We quickly get a feel who the leader is, a Latino man in a wife beater I shall call Lead Bad Guy. At first, they think these are rescuers but their hearts certainly sink when they realize the Grimes crew are really out for themselves and rescuers are not forthcoming.

Not that we’re sympathizing with the interlopers, who are criminals. They were just lucky to even be around in non-zombie form.

A guard when the virus starting overtaking the prison locked them in the cafeteria with all the food, which enabled them to survive 10 months. But once Lead Bad Guy is out, he tries to show his feathers: “My house, my rules, I get to go where I damn well please.”

But Rick exerts his leadership and explains the bleak situation and why there are so many dead zombies strewn about. Lead Bad Guy bestows Rick’s crew a small space by the water. But nope, Rick says …

Kim vs. his mom over the grandkids

  • Kim is the mom. She has the right to whether her kids see grandma or not
  • Seems a bit harsh, eh?
  • I don’t know enough to make a judgment call on this one.

Kim Zolciak’s mom Karen in August requested in court visitation rights to see her two grand-daughters.

But according to TMZ, those grandkids 11-year-old Ariana and 15-year-old Brielle don’t want to see her, based on affidavits.

Clearly, there has been a falling out between Kim and her mom and that extended down to the kids over the past year.

This was in evidence during an episode of “Don’t Be Tardy for The Wedding” a few months ago (and taped last year) when Karen used the indoor bathroom instead of the portable …

Simon Cowell is understandably peeved by what happened Wednesday night when the Giants/Cardinals NCLS game was delayed by rain. At first, Fox was told the rain would go on well past primetime. So it began airing “X Factor.” But the rain subsided and word was that the game was going to return.

So “The X Factor” got rudely cut off mid show – but the game didn’t come back as quickly as expected. So for a period of time, Fox even aired a repeat of “The Mindy Project.”  On the West Coast, they were supposed to air a repeat but ran the new episode for a period of time, before pulling it for the repeat.

“It what’s known as a total f up,” Cowell Tweeted.

Here’s what Fox just sent in terms of Tuesday’s programming:

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, the New FOX Tuesday comedies keep the laughs coming with all-new episodes of RAISING HOPE (8:00-8:30 PM …

Q100’s Bert Show regular Jenn Hobby announced this morning that she’s pregnant with her first child.

Hobby, 35, married principal Grant Rivera , 37, in November 2010 and said on air that they began trying to have a baby from the get go.

“I was honest off the bat with him that I wanted kids and he was on board,” Hobby said in an interview after the show.

After going the regular route, they went to a fertility specialist Dr. Mark Perloe and discovered she had a cervix problem. Once that  issue was fixed, she was able to get pregnant and is due April 18, 2013.

She told listeners who are having trouble getting pregnant that she understands how they feel. “I can speak your language,” she said. “I know there are a few people who are sad about it. It’s admittedly hard to hear when others get pregnant so easily. You’re not alone. Keep trying.”

Hobby, who has been with the Bert Show for a decade, …
