Less than two months after a wrong-way driver badly injured Kelly Stevens in a head-on collision on 400, the B98.5 radio host got married in his backyard to Katie Buser.
The near-death experience made him realize that life is short so he asked his girlfriend Buser for her hand in marriage last month for a wedding that happened over the weekend. The pair had been dating for a year.
The car accident badly messed up his left elbow and left knee, leaving him in a wheelchair for now. But he said his knee is improving and he was able to walk 20 feet with the help of walker during the wedding and stay upright during the vows.
“It hurt like a son-of-a-gun,” he said in an interview Sunday, his first full day as a married man. “For love, we’ll work through the pain.”
And he noted, it ended in time for the Georgia-Florida football game. Since Georgia won, “it was like an added wedding gift!”
Among those who attended his wedding included his co-host Vikki Locke and producer Jessica Forkel, plus WSB cohorts Mark Arum and Veronica Waters.
He also plans to re-join the morning show on Tuesday, though he’ll be doing his work from his home in Roswell.
He expects he’ll be well enough to go back to the studios in about a month.
If you want details of the accident, I wrote about it here.
Stevens said he still gets pretty intense flashbacks from the accident. “I was conscious the whole time,” he said. “I remember the sound of the crash, the powder coming out of the air bag. I remember seeing the hood of the car crunch in, the sound of the impact, the headlights.” He can’t drive yet but his wife has driven him down 400 past the accident site and he’s been okay.
He learned later that there are black boxes in the vehicle that provide information about how quickly he was going when it hit. The woman who was driving north on the south-bound 400 lane was driving 75 miles of an hour. He was going 65 miles an hour.
He said his left knee is improving but he still spends most of his time in a wheelchair. He hopes to be on a cane in a few weeks. His left elbow is recovering slower, he said, and it’s even more painful. “I won’t ever get 100 percent function back,” he said.
Steven’s favorite moment during the wedding: Katie’s two young sons DJ and Caleb walking down the aisle. DJ, the bashful older seven-year-old son tried to walk in the bushes so nobody could see him.
In other local radio marriage news, Star 94 afternoon host Chase Daniels got married the same day to Deborah Fishkind at the Vinings Club in Atlanta. He is off to the Bahamas this morning.
