‘American Idol” is set to return for its 12 season on January 16 and 17.
That’s a pretty typical launch date. The first night, a Wednesday, will be two hours while the second will be one. It’s less than three months away!

And here’s Phillip Phillips singing the National Anthem last night before Game One of the World Series. He kept it in his lane and did a very respectable job. His single “Home” has sold two million downloads. Impressive! Only two other coronation singles went double platinum: David Cook’s “Time of My Life” and Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This.”

Good for Phillip. Eagerly awaiting IDOL, but it may not last long for me if the “judges” are what the show is all about.

I thought Phil did a great job. He kept to the tune, sang the notes and still gave it a P-squared feel. And of course you can’t compare Jessica’s version to Phil’s. They are totally different kinds of singers. Jessica is pure of voice, powerful and kind of old school in a Celine Dion kind of way. Phil is intimate, emotionally quiet but intense and has a much more contemporary feel.
Don’t know how much longer Idol will stick around so I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Idol has undergone a lot of change over the past year.Well change is not always a good thing espcially when were accustomed to a particular flow or pattern. The chemistry between the judges will determine a lot. Will it be a trainwreck? Idol has two things going for it. Ryan and Jimmy Iovine.
Of course it also has become a running joke. WGWG can’t be ignored especially by those in the media and some of us who are tired of the unfair advantage, albeit perceived or real that it gives to white contestants. Given the fact that an African American won The Voice last year and a Latino young woman won X-Factor only proves that this is strictly an Idol issue.
With all the changes Idol made the one that should have been eliminated is the use of instruments! I’ll watch! I love music. But I’ll also watch waiting for the trainwreck between the judges and in hopes that maybe… just maybe they’ll be another Carrie or Kelly discovered and that talent and not a bias slanted towards getting young girls vote rule the day!

In truth, I’m not sure that the judges disagreeing is such a bad thing, especially after the lovefest that Idol has been for the last couple of years. If the judges can stay respectful of each other while disagreeing about the contestants, I don’t see that it makes Idol all about the judges. However, if Mariah and Nicki get into a verbal slug-fest, then Idol has a serious problem.

As usual DanJ, you put everything in proper perspective. The funny thing about the WGWG, is that many Idol fans/watchers may not see this as an issue at all. The only major changes I’ve seen so far, is the changing of judges. I don’t believe the judges will have that much of an impact (if any) on determining a winner, or different outcome. Unless a wgwg doesn’t make it to the live shows, then expect much of the same.

Whoa! XF is asking for a longer time delay for the live shows. The fear is that Britney will have a “bad day” during the lives shows. In other words, there’s fear that she may freak out. The standard time delay is 5 to 7 seconds. XF wants more than that.

Hi y’all,
I’ve been so busy lately, I haven’t had time to chime in…but I’m here.
It will be interesting to see how Idol does next year. It has gotten a lot of (bad) press because of the whole Nicki drama. Honestly, I know they are trying to remain in the headlines as XF and The Voice are one. I don’t know that it’s a good thing, imo.
As far as Idol being a running joke, I don’t think I agree. Sure, it gets a lot of flack for the so-called WGWG. I get it. I’ve been annoyed by it, but I’m also surprised at how the shows that aren’t showcasing that XF and, up to now, The Voice aren’t doing so great ratings wise. I seem to recall The Voice besting Idol a few times, but overall, didn’t Idol have better ratings? (Rodney?)
My thing is, XF is making themselves out to be the anti-Idol, and for those who complain about the “tired” formula of Idol, I’m surprised more people aren’t watching it. To me, this season of XF has been a vast improvement over last year’s. Sure, we still haven’t seen the live shows…but the talent is there. The live shows are mostly to see if these mentors can hack it. Even if they don’t, I’m hopeful it will be entertaining. Or I’ll stop watching.
Idol, tired as it might be, still has legs. That said, I think this season could be the moment of truth for it. By the time it comes on, the whole Nicki drama will have been long gone from the headlines…then what? It sure will be a contrast from the “feel good” vibe during JLo and Steven’s tenure. That’s what could be it’s downfall.
As far as finding a Kelly or Carrie…I’ve let go of that dream. Tho, I think if any show is likely to find someone like them, it will be XFactor.

All kidding aside, I agree with k&cf on a couple of points. Idol still has legs(at least ratings legs when compared to The Voice and XF) Time will tell if that remains true after this coming season.
And yes, XF is making itself out to be the anti-Idol and it doesn’t seem to be working. What I’ve seen of it so far tells me that some of the talent is better than last year but I can’t help but wonder if the audience is put off by how obvious the manipulation is. The whole thing with Simon not including Melanie Amaro in his group last year was sooooooo contrived. The mentors fake competition arguments as opposed to the real feeling behind The Voice’s judges snarking at each other.
And the total disappointment that has been Britney so far…the girl is DULL. Which makes me think this whole “we need more time delay” is just more manipulation.

X-Factor and Idol are both Fox productions, scheduled in different time-frames/seasons of the year. Some of the same behind-the-scenes asst. producers and music industry liasons are involved with both shows, regardless of the competitive front.
The group category on X-Factor is much better this year, as Paula and her consultants could not do much with the crop last year. There are several solo artists that have real potential this year as well.
If Idol holds the ratings from last year, they should not have any trouble finding sponsors that will stay on-board at rates corresponding to a lower average number of viewers. A potential firecracker/backlash in the Idol landcape this year, will be if some parent groups, family show watchdogs and reporters give the general public a clue as to what is said and done in Nicki’s videos that don’t run on the regular music channels or versions not played on main radio.

12:57 pm
The extra time delay for X-Factor may be because of the potential for bad language. The Voice is bleeped a lot because of it. However some are drawn to The Voice because of that.
As for ratings I do think Idol has loyal fans. I’m not sure how those fans will react if Idol turns into a circus.
I prefer X-Factor over the other two shows with Idol being second and The Voice third. The ratings for X-Factor are hard to gauge since it competes with The Voice and also on Thursdays is NFL football. This past year Idol had some great talent and while PP was good, better than the past 3 winners he was not the best contestant IMO. On the other hand XF with Melanie Amaro, Josh Krajcik and Chris Rene were the top 3. Last years Voice winner should have been Jesse Campbell. That’s why we now have the steal. Jesse was robbed!!! Chris Mann over Jesse Campbell? Please XTina glad she won’t be on season 3. I also think Juliet was the best of the final 4.
The OTHER SHOWS…Duets and The Next were not good. I watched Duets the entire season and two episodes of The Next!
I agree with G that Idol may need a longer time delay for their two divas. I also agree with Kellyandcarriefan that the next Kelly or Carrie will come from X-Factor.
Top 5 X-Factor
1) Jennel Garcia
2) David Correy
3) Carly Rose Sonaclar
4) LYLAS (YES A GROUP)
5) Jason Brock

First of all, a big HIGH FIVE to DanJ on the Jesse Campbell comment! Letting him go was the biggest blunder on The Voice (because of Christina of course), and they’re making sure they clean it up with the “Steal”. I absolutely love this addition to the format of the show. I don’t care what you call it (Save), this change definitely works for the show. Can’t have it both ways…………criticize The Voice for adopting an idea from Idol, then criticizing XF for being the “anti-idol”.
Deirdre
October 25th, 2012
1:35 pm
I don’t think anyone here criticized XF for being the anti-Idol. It almost has to be since it is also on Fox. The criticism(at least mine) stems from the obvious audience manipulation smacking of desperation on XF’s part.
And I think the steal works for The Voice…but let’s be honest, it’s a judges save and the judges can save more than one singer. That being said, the judges on The Voice are not saving a singer who has been eliminated by audience voting. They’re a saving a singer whose mentor MUST make a choice whether he/she wants to or not. So the steal seems kind of contrived, too. A mentor must dump one singer but that singer doesn’t necessarily have to leave. It adds drama and probably would have saved Jesse Campbell last year but, other than that, why can’t a mentor just choose not to eliminate ONE of his singers?

K&C and D, you guys have me cracking up behind the screen. You both know me so well. LOL!
I don’t like the fact that both shows are competing in the same season. I have too much going on to keep up as much as I’d like between 2 shows. I like to provide and read detailed analysis of The Voice and XF, much like I do for Idol. Competing shows throughout the week don’t allow me to do that.
Out of the “Big 3″, Idol is currently a close 3rd for me. Not because it’s a bad product, but it’s third for my enjoyment. I do admit Idol had the best crop of talent they’ve had in years. However, the other shows are stepping it up. I slightly enjoy The Voice a bit more than XF “today”, but it’s likely this may change once I catch up with XF. Thursday nights are bad due to football season.
Idol may have one or two r&b artist that make it to the live shows, then a boat load of everything else. There seems to be more genre balance between The Voice and XF. If there ARE instrumentalist on Voice & XF, it doesn’t come out until much later in the show (if then).
DanJ makes a good point about the variety and style of winners for each show. You have a WGWG, BGWG, and a Latino powerhouse. Neither would win on the rival shows. That has to say something about the demographic and taste of viewership.

Back when Idol first began in the UK it was called Pop Star. When it started here in the USA the concept was still to find the next big Pop star. The first season, the contestants were made up almost entirely of pop singers, not R&B or country. Even Tamyra Grey sang mostly in the pop style with only small hints of a possible R&B background. Idol evolved into a little more musical diversity after the first season but mostly it has maintained that “middle of the road” personality. I think that’s why it appeals to so many people. It rarely goes too far.

I will be watching XF with y’all as soon as the live shows start! And thanks to you guys I have an idea of the good singers to watch out for. Should be interesting!
I don’t think Idol overall has become a running joke yet… but DanJ, yes, it will be soon enough if they don’t put an end to the wgwg winners. The media is noticing more and more with each one. If Idol was smart, they’d make sure no wgwgs get in front of America.
I think every season starts off with good talent, good buzz about that talent, and fresh hope for a true winner. The joke part doesn’t usually kick in until April/May when the good ones start to leave while the less-talented wgwg sails on.
Sadly, (not so) Darling Nikki may add to the joke perception. And Seth may be on to something… her explicit versions may get called into the public perception, and it may backfire when parents become more aware of what she’s putting out there. We’ll see! I’ll give her a chance, but I’m just not convinced she was a very smart choice.

It will be interesting to see if X-Factor is pulling a younger demographic viewer this time. If so, it will put the boy bands and younger male artists in a better position for survival. 14-15 year old girls will still be voting when their mothers are on to watching another show, their older brother just voted for a hip-hopper or rapper one time, and their dad didn’t watch or didn’t vote. Their grandpa watched for a bit, then went to the workshop, their grandma voted for someone who sang a pleasant ballad that sounded nice.
David Correy and Vino Allen are both good singers, but I can’t see either one making the top 5. My bet is that the over-25’s will crumble like the groups did last year. Tate Stevens may hold-on for a while if there’s enough country audience, but he doesn’t have the image or X-Factor of a rising Country star. He’s not competing against jugglers, dance groups or comedians – so I don’t see a Kevin Skinner situation here. He just has to survive Wille Jones, to get a ways down the road.
The Voice is now done with the battlerounds, and now headed to the “knock-out” rounds, where the Judges are free to make decisions that will tick-off many of us.

@Seth, last years over’s were poorly chosen by Nicole however Josh did finish 2nd. Dexter should have never been chose. Josh and LeRoy were both pretty good. Stacy even had a moment or two.
This year I think any one of the four OVERS could make the final 4. I only see two teens Carly Rose and Diamond White with a chance to make the top 4. Same with the young adults. Jennel Garcia and Willie Jones but only if he goes more R&B. The only group with a chance is LYLAS. Of course these are just my opinions. I do like David Correy he kinda reminds me of Bruno Mars. Vino Alan is hard edge rock. Jason Brock has a great voice but he is out there and some may not vote for based on his sexuality. I hope that’s not the case. Tate Stevens has a great throwback country voice. So as far at groups/categories go as a whole the OVERS have the most talent. IMO

Good Morning!
“Cloud Atlas” is the divider movie of the year – people either love it or loathe it. It’s a confusing mess, based on an “unfilmable” book by David Mitchell, with six interlocking stories taking place in different time frames, all involving the same actors in different parts (Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent and Hugh Grant). This means a lot of latex and make-up, and lots of time spent guessing which actor is playing what character.
Some of the acting is unbelievanly hammy (Sarandon popping her huge bug-eyes), Hanks speaking post- apocalyptic gibberish), some is lovely (Halle Berry in all her parts, ditto unknown Korean model/actress Doona Bae). Direction by siblings Andy and Lana Wachowski and German filmmake Tom Tykwer is as wild and woolly as the storylines.
I plan to read the book and go see the movie again… maybe then I’ll understand it.

“Chasing Mavericks” is all water and woe, telling the true-life tale of Jay Moriarity who rose to surfer fame when he survived, at 16, the scariest waters on the California coast, the Maverick breaks.
Fatherless and caring for an alcoholic, depressed mother (Elisabeth Shue), Jay attached himself to “Frosty” a surfer “dude” (Gerard Butler) down the street. Frosty becomes his surfing mentor and teacher of life lessons.
Johnny Weston plays Jay with a cheerfulness that comes of as a bit grating in the movie, but apparently the real Jay was a happy, sunny person, in spite of his many hardships. If you plan to see “Chasing Mavericks”, do NOT google Jay Moriarity until afterwards.

All for show in the “favorite judge” thing. The logistics and producer assistants will be running popularity checks through facebook, youtube, twitter, etc. – and giving the Judges the info about who they should keep if possible, within their powers, in a pinch.

(RE; X-Factor top 16 contestant) — David Correy’s birth mother comes forward
by Nick Roman on Sun October 28, 2012 at 01:46 am
Reality TV can actually do some good in the world … just ask “X Factor” finalist David Correy who found his birth mother after 25 years of separation … all thanks to the show.
The 26-year-old David — who is in the final 16 — told the judges during his first audition that he was singing for his birth mother — whom he’d never met — who gave him up for adoption from Brazil as a baby.
Sources close to David tell TMZ when his episode of “X” aired in Brazil, a woman named Luciene Lima recognized the baby pics shown in David’s segment and had a gut feeling he was hers.
We’re told Luciene went through the Brazilian court system to trace her adoption — and her findings led her back to David. Luciene, not knowing how to reach out to her long lost son, contacted the local media.
Our sources say a local paper was able to track David down in the U.S. and tell him about his mother.
We’re told a DNA test has not been performed, but so far everything matches: the birth certificate, the orphanage David came from and the timeline.
A close friend of David’s tells TMZ, “David is so happy — and he can’t wait to meet her for the first time.”

Yeah, Mercedes. Glad the Kitty is doing bettery now. Hershey is too much like a delicious chocolate bar – to honor Hershel, how about Hershette or Hershelley? Don’t remember your mentioning it, but I saw the “Walllflower” film with Emma Watson this weekend, and I really liked it. It was very sad, and I did cry in several places, but thought it was a really good movie. Emma was adorable, and the boy starring was adorable as well.
I hope to watch “WD” tonight, so just warn me if anyone makes any telling remarks. Can’t wait. I think just about the scariest moment of the whole series for me was when the riot gear clad walkers came out – horrifying looking. A little like the Pharoah’s guard clad skeletons in “The Mummy”.

Morning!
I haven’t seen WD either and probably won’t until tomorrow afternoon.
I hope everyone had a great weekend. I spent a lot of time cleaning leaves out of the pool. We will probably be doing that everyday for a while until this wind calms down. My dogs love autumn. They wander around the backyard competing with the squirrels for all the hickory nuts that have fallen off the trees and chase swirling leaves.

Anyone know why Kelly is appearing that (yet another)country music show this week. Wasn’t her many-award-winning duet last year?

Kelly is a friend of country music, she has made more than one country recording AND, isn’t the guy she’s madly in love with at the moment the son(or step-son) of Reba McIntyre?

Morning, everyone.
I fell asleept on Revenge last night. Was just too tired to sit up and put my head down on the back of the chair, and I woke up in the middle of 666 Park. Thank goodness for dvr. I understand there was a surprise development on Revenge. I will watch it first thing tonight.

I’ve done that, Harriett!
RE Kelly and Country music..she also had a Country version of Mr Know-It-All come out this year that was very popular. Plus I think it’s her manager who is Reba’s husband. Yep, I think she has enough country cred to be included in any Country award show.

That’s a good story about David Correy’s birth mother. I have not been able to help but wonder how all the talk of the birth mother has made the mother who raised him feel. He has not said anything about his parents’ support for this quest. I hope they do support it, for i am sure there will be hurt feelings otherwise.
And, D, I have done it more that one time!

Oh, and I hope by the live shows someone has gotten to Mr. Correy and told him he has to cover his behind. He’s wearing his pants a la the “new” fashion with the belt about pubic bone high and the entire behind hanging out (usually covered only by underwear)

I was just thinking with Kelly, that I recently read a magazine interview where she said people kept telling her she should “go country”, but she had no intention of doing so – she loved the kind of music she’s been doing all along. That’s why I was wondering about the appearance.

My son just told me that he is an Emmy Award winner. Apparently, the engineering dept. of Netflix won an Emmy Award for innovation in broadcasting. He promised to send a picture of himself holding the Emmy.

Cool, D – if they show the technical emmys – can we expect him to say “I owe everything I have to my Mother, Deirdre”???? Maybe you can get a fabulous, glittery dress and go with him!

LOL! Unfortunately, they already had the award ceremony and, if the engineers at Netflix had been invited as a group, I probably would have had to wrestle his wife for the chance to go. As it is, he’s going to a launch party in L.A. next week for Netflix’s version of Arrested Development. Unfortunately(again) Netflix has limited attendance to employees only. My son’s wife is NOT happy!

Getting back on topic, Christina Aguilera claims that she doesn’t watch any of the singing competition shows including her own. She said that she watched a whole episode of Idol once and Simon Cowell was acting like(I quote here) a d**k and she doesn’t think that is the way to go with wannabe singers.

Hope all is well up North, RoHo! On “Today”, they showed various Jersey shore towns, and the main streets are all now sandy beaches. What a terrible cleanup ahead for these poor folks.
Anyone else been watching that crane up 90 stories in the middle of Manhattan? Man, if it falls, or that part that’s hanging down and blowing in the wind does, there’s gonna be some major damage, and people could be killed or badly hurt ! They said the big hanging piece could be blown several blocks away if it breaks free, and hit in a place not prepared for it.
