At 1:57 p.m. Oct. 24, the final song for Dave FM was Big Star’s “Thank You Friends.”
Thank you, friends
Wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you
I’m so grateful for all the things you helped me do
Apropos and sweet.
Margot Smith, Dave’s music director for its entire eight-year lifespan, will remain on sports talk 92.9/The Game as a producer. So she put the music mix together to the very end. In her mind, the final day of live jocks on Sept. 29 was really the last day with Butch Walker’s “ATL” the final song. She didn’t do anything special for the final hours today of the playlist though you could (over) read into some of the song titles she chose: “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Tom Petty. “With or Without You” by U2, “Dance Away” by Roxy Music, “Is There a Ghost” by Band of Horses, “Save Me” by Aimee Mann, Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” Avett Brothers “Live and Die.”
CBS Radio chose to kill off Dave in a most unusual way. Almost all radio station formats die like a mob hit. Unforeseen, (often) no warning, no goodbye, buried as if they never existed. CBS announced Dave’s departure in late July and gave it three long months for the station to die. It was like the station was given three months to live, which gave the staff time to say goodbye, up to the final live jock day on 9/29 (picked on purpose). For the past month, the station has been on life support, just music and ads, no jocks. Overall, it was a classy, satisfying departure, however sad. This was the type of funeral every station wishes it could get.
Dave was named as such to be your friend. And though too many of Dave’s buddies (as in, listeners) went away, causing his demise, he was a good friend while he lasted. Thanks for the memories.
Options for adult rock fans on the FM dial in Atlanta are pretty thin. A few of the groups heard on 92.9 are heard elsewhere but not in the mix that Dave had it and many groups will more or less disappear from the airwaves including Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers. Even if adult rock (or adult alternative as it’s called in radio land) comes back to Atlanta, it may do so on an HD2 station in stripped down form or on a weak translator signal that doesn’t reach very far. Besides your own music collection, if you have access to your smartphone music and can hook it into your car stereo system, you could access plenty of adult rock stations around the country. Or if you have Sirius/XM, the closest equivalent is the Spectrum.
So we must move forward. 92.9 lives on now as a sports talk station.
After a rather sentimental launch speech about how we became sports fans, 92.9/The Game began at 2 p.m. “It’s more than a sports station. It’s sports entertainment in the same passion you have for the game is in each and every one of us as well. Are you ready, Atlanta? Are you ready for the Game? Sports radio 92.9/The Game.”
The first voice up was Carl Dukes, last heard in Houston. He introduced his team, former Pittsburgh Steeler Kordell Stewart and Rachel Baribeau.
Dukes is the lead guy and he helped shepherd in a bunch of the other staff members. Weekend folks such as Ryan Klesko, Sam Mitchell, Chuck Smith (who was on V-103 at one point many years ago), Dennis Scott and Bob Neal. He brought in the morning show, which is Rick Kamla, Randy Cross and C.J. Simpson.
The emphasis is how the talk station won’t just be about sports but also about life and entertainment. I’m sure, though, that in reality, they will still stick heavily with sports.
First big name guest was the Hawks’ forward Josh Smith at 3:40 p.m.
Details of the new lineup here.

Under NO circumstances will I ever listen to Chuck Smith…He’s what killed AM790 a few years back when Shapiro got the bright idea to break up Chuck Oliver and Matt Chernoff just to get a jock’s perspective during football season…After football season, Smith brings NOTHING to the table, just like David Pollack.

Good grief . The next notch up on the radio , 93.7 , is sports talk . This really is awful . Could Atlanta radio get any worse ? One can only hope some other station will fill the Dave FM void . They had the best playlist of all the commercial radio stations .

Z-93 (ok, yeah, it was top40 once) turned into Dave-FM and now into what it is not.
Not sure whether I should feel sad that I was one of the many who abandoned the FM dial for satellite and this is the result, or glad that I had the foresight to see how it would turn out anyway.

Essentially, new music in Atlanta is gone. Sirius/XM is one alternative, though it sounds AWFUL. In addition to The Spectrum, try The Loft. Great station! I’ve found many new groups to listen to on that station. Pandora is another option. Make up your own stations! You will hear new music there as well…..But not on ATL FM. It’s dead.

Dave FM was far from perfect, but it was best in the city and will be missed. At least it was allowed to depart with some grace.
Now that the ATL FM dial is overly saturated with sports talk and pop, hopefully all the competition will cause some of these stations to fail and potentially bring in a new station that plays something close to quality music, of which there current is none on commercial FM radio here.

Already taking jabs at the other sports stations. Atlanta’s only 24 hour sports station. Let’s see how long that lasts. There is a reason 680 and 790 switch over after 7. That being said, I hope the morning show covers other sports and actually talks sports not what upscale restaurant they ate at last night or how they were hanging with the boys in Vegas a few weeks ago.

People who make money and spend money are in bed or at home after 8 PM. Why would you need 24 hours of live sports? Heck, ESPN shows reruns late at night. Sounds like a waste of a lot of money.

One affect with the new radio station is the 790 the Zone lost their channel 46 TV show on the weekends. They have been replaced by the 92.9 staff. The station will take a year to get settled but CBS is putting a lot money into all the sports station nationwide. I have listened to the station in Tampa and they are going hire professional radio hosts not their friends or their roommates that cut their rent after their wives filed for divorce. The station owners are not going to their parents to start a station or to bail them out of their debt. I also don’t expect them to recycle old talent either. Which means the Steward brothers are not joining the station. Plus, it did not help when Ryan sued the NFL for head injuries. ESPN fired both brothers after that happened.
The bottom line is the local sports radio hosts are boring and have run out of material. It’s time to get new blood on the radio waves.

The morning show sounds horrible. How do you basically have a caller at 7:56 ramble on for about 5 minutes like it is his show. Justifing why the city is a bad sports town. Not to mention they never answered 1 of the 3 questions that he had. Went to break came back bearly answered one then went to break again 3 minutes later. No show to this point has been good on the ears. The shows don’t seem planned at all. Like its college radio, all stream of thought. The station has a whole seems to lack show structure. Every show has spent way too much time since they launched either begging for listeners or trying to sell you on who they are and their credentials.

No love for Album 88 or WREK? I would imagine folk who don’t want to invest in sattelite radio or iPoding would head there. It’ll be interesting to see if either gets a slight bump in the coming weeks now with Dave completely gone.
I wonder if anyone is going to pick up the Little Steven Show? There is the Underground Garage XM channel, but I know the syndicated show is still ongoing.
I do think, however, that 99x may return from the dead yet again in a less aggressive leaning format. Possibly even closer to its early, almost freeform format- now that it would not have to include the Disturbed, Seether, or Nickelback types in its playlist.
BTW, currently occationally listening to BBC 6 Music- which always felt like where Dave was trying to go.

Turned it on this morning to see what was up… What a train wreck. Way too much NBA talk in October, they actually had a section where sugar britches talked about athletes breaking up with their girlfriends… And then I heard a bout Magic Johnson getting sued from a stewardess because she was late for work. First The 2 Live Stews are coming to 92.9 after the non compete clause in the 790 contract is done David. Now secondly people like “Poster Falcons & Hawks Season Ticket Holder” If you don’t like the fact they have blacks and women on the station then their is always 790 and 680, why bitch about “all the blacks on 92.9 because that’s what you wanted to say when you can listen to the hillbilly stations 680 and 790? You hate the station then why are you listening to it? Oh and if you don’t like blacks on 92.9 wait till you see all those blacks faces on Channel 46/Cable that is a CBS station here in Atlanta because as the TWO LIVE STEWS will be saying on 92.9 soon (790 the Zone, is GONE, Alright, Alright, Alright, ! )

Not the greatest listed in the world but at least it’s fresh. They’ll work out the kinks, and at least it’s an alternative to the other choices. 680 is really as stale as they come, cannot listen to any of it. I used to be able to handle 790, but now besides the college football guys and Archer and Bell its’ all worthless. Who wants to listen to where Steak ate dinner last night? I also used to like the 2 live Stews, but they clearly stopped prepariong for the show, which became obvious.

Sad. Very sad. My inner conspiracy theorist wonders if the Big Radio guys are in cahoots w/ Sirius/XM to try to force all of us in the 25-45 crowd into satellite radio. I say this tongue-in-cheek because that’s pretty much all that’s left for us who don’t particularly enjoy country, R&B, or pop in this city. It’s actually making me want to pay to finally have an AUX jack installed in my car so I can at least use Spotify or Pandora on the way to work and on the way home.

I don’t know- not so much a conspiracy. More like playing chicken in a large radio market.
99x dumped the Classic Alternative, British, and Punk stuff in favor of Limp Bizkit and Nickelback. That created a void in a pretty large college town market, and Clear Channel saw an opening and tried with The Buzz (eventually scrapping that when Dave showed up with a stronger signal).
99x and Clear Channel then went into Thermal Nuclear War mode when Clear Channel killed 96 Rock- turning The Buzz into The Project on the stronger 96.1 signal. As 99x went more aggressive to fight off Project, Dave started to program toward the old 99x audience, adding some Classic Alternative (Smiths, Replacements, Cure) to it’s mix. But Alternative is tricky and needs a large catalog of new music to cycle through.
99x really succeeded when 70% of its playlist got constanly refreshed, while maintaining that handpicked balance. The format just chews up content, I’d say probably more than a top 40 format does.
Dave’s playlist, however, wasn’t adventerous or fresh enough to keep the 99x folks without losing the Dave Matthews / Widespread Panic audience the station originally courted.
Dave couldn’t solidify their identity. 99x lost theirs. And with no counter balance in the market, Dave really had nowhere to go.
Having served its only task of killing 99x (twice), Project 9-6-1 was quickly put to sleep. I would think Q100 or Star are probably Clear Channel’s likely targets with Power.
It’ll be interesting to watch.

It’s interesting that after Dave discontinued the jocks, the station actually got better. Different music selections, larger play list and fewer commercials all made it much improved. True. But I don’t think prolonged automated Dave would worked. You need personality, sometimes you need context. And I like people talking about what they’re playing. Despite the fact I have an iPod and XM- I find myself listening to Album 88, some WREK stuff, and BBC 6 a lot as well.
I think there’s still space for a local station that’s also passionate about what they’re playing. Obviously there’s still a demand for it. The local music scene is still very healthy and vibrant. And it should be supported by that kind of a large station. Hopefully, sooner than later, we’ll get it.

I’ve been listening off and on since the station kicked off yesterday at 2pm. I love the diversity of the station. It’s a shame that, just because the station has black and female talent, people are being so negative. But I guess that’s why 680 and 790 has been so successful. With the exception of The Stews and Sandra – primarily white men. But I guess that appeals to some people.
As a female sports fan, I’m loving it overall. The Jerome and Jamie show was great today. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Mac and Jason last night and my favorite personality is Rachel.

What made losing DAVE FM so sad to me is they finally got it . They lost the tackiness . You know the lame Jimmy Barnes and Evonne Monett morning show . They were replaced with that toned down Steve intelligent music guy who did a good job . They got rid of the noon lunch show . I like Mara Davis but that show served no purpose . The 12 o’clock cheese ?? How stupid . Just a stupid lunchtime show . Finally they expanded their music lineup . It was so limited at the beginning . First at least you pick the right football team. I heard you called in to the morning show too. The Steward brothers are not going to be on 92.9 when the station just rolled out the new staff? They are not going to change a show after that station was on the air for 9 weeks or so. There is no room for them.
790 will survive for longer then most people think. They are still have their morning and afternoon show on CSS. The also just dropped Yahoo radio, and went to NBC sports radio. As most people know Comcast owns NBC. Lincoln Financial Media Company has a lot of money backing all their national radio stations.

They have two stations that talk nothing but SEC/UGA sports because that is their market it fits I believe what CBS/92.9 is doing is actually bringing to the southeast a first major southern sports station that talks sports. 100,000 watts man I can hear them when I am at work down in buckhead GA (Not buckhead Atlanta) for those that don’t know the difference. Now we disagree on the Stews and we’ll see in the next few months.

Total trainwreck. I listened for 45 min starting at 6 and they couldn’t focus on a single topic during segments. The hosts would discuss something and then suddenly switch to another topic. Hosts were not good at all. I listened again around 4pm and it started sounding like Victory Radio, the hosts were trying to out-do each other by proclaiming how christian they are (topic was Tebow). I understand it was the first day but still, I doubt I’ll listen again, just not my speed. I’ll listen to my MP3 player and Chuck & Chernoff.

Radio buttons used to be programmed to flip between AM for sports and DaveFM for music. Need to reprogram my FM button now. Tried it for 10 minutes, but the format is too painful to listen. The format makes it feel like I’m back in the northeast, which I left for a reason.

Listened quite a bit, but it’s the same stale topics (Tebow, Yankees, Dwight Howard, etc) and all presented in that RAWR FOX SPORTS X-TREME! attitude. A lot of yelling on this station….Good interview with Deion Sanders that the host tried his best to screw up with his IN YOUR FACE style. Lay off the Dew and energy drinks, guys. The ladies need to chill out too and stop trying to be over the top. Take a lesson from Sandra Golden.

Really? Tended segments with paying sponsors attempting to mask them as talking sports? My God beyond embarrassing. The biggest waste of a full market signal in history.

Let’s give it more than 3 days people…The Game has got some kinks to work out for sure but it’s not all bad. I’ve listened to the Mac and Jason show on my drive home for the past 3 nights and it’s actually pretty entertaining. This Jason Goff guy is going to be a star mark my words.
On another note people are seriously angry because there are blacks and women on air? Really? Wouldn’t have pegged Dave listeners for a bunch of old racists..Interesting.

I refrained from commenting for a few days to give this station a chance. I understand that they are new and bound to make some mistakes initially. But, that being said…
Where is the local identification? Couldn’t they find ONE on-air personality from Atlanta? I know, Jamie Dukes played for the Falcons, but does he have any loyalty to them now? Bob Neal and Chuck Smith have credibility, but they don’t have a regular weekday show. Jerome and Mitch have been around long enough to get a pass, but Jerome is a Steelers fan, and Mitch is an NY Giants fan.
I have heard on-air personalities profess their love for the Cowboys and the Vikings and other teams. Apparently, none of them like the Falcons, and even worse, know next to nothing about them.
And please, do that evening guy a favor and buy him a ticket back to CHICAGO. He can’t speak for two minutes without reminding everyone that he used to work in CHICAGO.
If you don’t have any local loyalty (to any local team, not just the Falcons), just play some syndicated national shows.
I am hoping this station will succeed, but it isn’t off to a good start. I agree with the infomercial complaints too.
The best local sports talk show ever in Atlanta was the Bottom Line with Chris Dimino and Nick Cellini. The morning show they have isn’t as good because they have to put up with Steak Shapiro, and they are better suited to evening drive slot.

I know that Nick and Chris aren’t from around here either, but they have been here for a long time, and they are respectful toward the local teams and fans.
For what it’s worth, I don’t have a problem with the Stews. They would be a big improvement over what the Game has on-air now.

So I switched over during Friday (?) afternoon at the start of some hour & it was an infomercial for one of those restaurants that emphasizes the waitresses in lieu of actual edible food, Twin Peaks. The waitress was making picks, presumably based on eenie-meenie between her nips. So 3 of the 5 times I’ve listened I heard infomercials!
It was refreshing to hear the late night guy admit he has no idea about college football & other things that are big down here instead of faking it. And then he said based on the research he’d done, he thought UGA will get killed today, which is almost certainly dead-on accurate. I like this dude.
I’ll still be switching between Archer & Bell and Chuck & Chernoff in the afternoons. But it will be nice to have some local night shows. John Michaels on 790 is good at night, but the signal sucks OTP.
I will miss Dave a bit, but when they started playing crap like Tom Petty, I pretty much dumped it anyway.

Sorry, but how can anyone listen to Chuck and Turnoff? They are immature nitwits.

I used to be a big fan of the Stews but after listening to them for years I realized that I know just as much as they know about football and basketball and they know very little about baseball and other sports. I’m just saying.

Dave fans aren’t the ones listening/commenting about the Game – trust me.

Opening drive has too many people talking at the same time. CJ Simpson had to agree and comment on everything that was said.
I did like Bob Neal and his weekend football programs

I used to like the Stews but after a few years I got tired of the screaming and hollering that Ryan does. Doug can’t be non biased when it comes to the Lakers. I tuned away from their show for a few months because I got tired of the two brothers arguing all the time. When I finally tuned back in they were still doing the arguing thing. If they do end up on 92 I hope that they improve their show. They need to do more homework, stop with the barking (only Q-dogs like that) and act a little more mature, especially Ryan. They need to improve a lot to get back to where they were.

There is only 1 reason I’m not on that station yet…. racism. And all of ya’ll that don’t like me…. racist. Obviously. And AJC with this white background I’m typing on…. racist! Eagles fans wanting Foles to start over Vick…. you got it… racist. Now Andy Reid definitely needs to be fired and they should hire a proven head coach like Denny Green. *insert dogs barking here*

Always listened to Dave in the shower and haven’t bothered to change the station since they left. Anybody who wants to claim racism of the listeners need to ask Kordell Stewart and company why for the last three days have they framed the Michael Vick debate around racism. Seriously, three days straight. We see what the station is trying to do, and that’s fine, but put some professionals on the air (and Ryan Cameron is not a professional sports talk guy). The only positive thing I have to say about The Game is that they have a good signal.
