Justin Bieber’s ‘As Long As You Love Me’ top song in Atlanta radio

Justin Bieber’s ‘As Long As You Love Me” is the top song in Atlanta radio, bumping Ellie Goulding’s month-long stay with “Lights.”

This is Bieber’s first chart topper in Atlanta, with the credit going primarily to two Clear Channel stations: the new Power 96.1 played it a whopping 141 times while its sister station Wild 105.7 added another 125. Q100 spun it 23 times.

I can’t say this is necessarily a coincidence, but Bieber is headlining the first Power 96.1 Jingle Ball in Atlanta at Philips Arena Dec. 12.

Power 96.1 only aired one other song remotely close to that of Bieber’s hit the past week: Maroon 5′s “One More Night” was played 127 times.

Dave FM has less than 48 hours before CBS pulls the plug for sports talk. Margot Smith, the program director, continued to add new music the past two weeks, including eight new songs. She greatly expanded the breadth and depth of the station’s playlist in its final weeks, with nothing more at stake.

And while much of its core playlist is still the big classic rock hits, 97.1/The River has begun sprinkling in some older songs regularly that it had never before, including the Cars “Moving in Stereo,” Peter Gabriel’s “Solsbury Hill” and Robert Plant’s “In the Mood.” I heard the Cult’s ‘She Sells Sanctuary” yesterday. That, along with the group’s “Fire Woman” were added earlier this month. The Cult is an act more likely heard on what used to be 99X or Dave FM. The station also keeps playing more songs deep into the classic rock library it has never played before. On Sunday, the seven-year-old station played Allman Brothers Band’s “Stand Back,” the Beatles “Eight Days a Week,” Queen’s “Save Me” and Led Zeppelin’s “For Your Life” for the first time.

And Clear Channel, Cumulus, et al, are wondering why people old enough to vote are abandoning broadcast music radio…
