‘Idol’ ad ratings take a nosedive; ‘X Factor’ renewed for third season

For five years, advertisers paid more for 30 seconds on ‘American Idol’ than any other show.

Not anymore.

Ad Age, in a poll, reports that “Idol” rates dropped 30 percent (about equal to the actual ratings drop), from $502,900 to $340,825 per 30-second ad.

Tops now is NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,’ averaging $545,145.

Generally, ratings on the broadcast networks this fall continue to decline sharply, especially among younger viewers.

I anticipate “Idol” should match ratings in January compared to a year ago when it launches its 12th season with all the buzz and hype of the new judges, but whether it can hold them depends wholly on the talent once we get to the live shows.

***
Fox has renewed ‘X Factor’ for a third season despite sharply lower ratings from season one now that it’s up against “The Voice.”

The press release was packed with hyperbole. Mike Darnell, who runs Fox TV’s alternative/reality TV department, said this:

“This season, Simon and the producers of THE X FACTOR took an already strong show and made it absolutely fantastic. The format changes are working, the contestants are unbelievably talented, and Britney and Demi – alongside Simon and L.A – have brought an incredibly fun new chemistry to the judges’ panel that our fans really love,” said Darnell. “We feel great about the show and I’m thrilled to bring it back next year for Season Three.”

The release does not mention the mess that happened last week when only half the show was aired due to a rain delayed baseball game. The episode airs tomorrow night at 9:30 p.m., extending into the 10 p.m. news hour by 30 minutes. But it’s a shortened one-hour results show instead of the original two-hour take. And it keeps Fox on schedule with most of its Tuesday night comedy schedule before baseball intervenes.

It’s being beaten regularly by “The Voice” in total viewers and 18-49 ratings, averaging 9 million viewers on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The early episodes of “The X Factor” last year, with less competition, was closer to 12 million viewers.

The first live shows debut after Halloween on Wednesday, Nov. 1 with Khloe Kardashian and Mario Lopez as co hosts. When “X Factor” goes live the week of the election, “The Voice” will compete on Wednesday and Thursday, same nights as “The X Factor.”

Hi all! Sis Sam from the last thread… nope, I doubt I’d buy anything from Brad P. either. But Angelina’s worse…. I simply cannot stand her. She could adopt the whole world and it still wouldn’t change the fact that she purposely stole someone’s husband. :-( I just don’t get why people love her.

And as far as Idol’s ad ratings being down…. *cough cough* The WGWG problem *cough*

I know, I know. But someone was gonna say it… ;-)

Thanks Rodney. All good things must come to an end… some just limp along for longer than others. By “limp” I mean continue to be one of the top shows. Heck, even that will end.

Jen: We are definitely long lost sisters! I feel the same! Always think about the blood vial around her scrawny neck every time I see her. And, if you’re watching “Pretty Little Liars”, the Halloween show is tomorrow night at 8.

Cannot say I’ve missed the XF for one moment – just feel like I wasted a lot of time last season with it.

I think X-Factor has a lot of talent this year and look forward to watching it. A girls group might even make it to the top 5. I glad to see Fox bring it back for a third season.

Oh COOL, Sam! Thanks for the reminder!!! I would’ve been so upset if I’d missed Adam.

And re: Angelina -yup, hard to believe she has fans. ???

Oh, on a totally different subject, who saw Jimmy Kimmel go on the street and ask random people who won “last night’s debate between Michelle Obama and Ann Romney”? It was HILARIOUS to hear people act like they’d watched the (nonexistent, of course) debate. One guy carried on forever about how he only saw the beginning, but Michelle was making some great points. Sorry, hope that isn’t too close to bringing up politics, but ROTFLMAO…

Mercedes, she’s admitted it! In more than one interview, as I recall. (been a while.. but was real interviews, not tabloids.) She admitted she was purposely trying to get pregnant by Brad while he was still married to Jen!

Good morning!

Played catch up all day yesterday.

I spent three days in the NC mountains, and it was just beautiful: Lake Lure, Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, and Black Mountain, NC. Stayed on the lake, but took lots of side trips.

I think there have been two Angelinas: the homewrecker and the philanthropist.

Jenny….You’re right about the ***coughwgwg*** factor. We should all be convinced by now that the wgwg factor is greater than any talent that will ever come through Idol. My money is already on a wgwg to win season 12……….and we all know it doesn’t matter that we don’t know him yet.

Harriett: I’m headed to Highlands next Thurs – hope there are a few leaves left for us! Love this time of year!

Deirdre, Mercedes and anyone else watching “WD” – Yeah, got to watch it last night. Unfortunately, it was during dinner, so lots of head-turning going on. I’ll be discreet just in case M hasn’t watched yet, but boy did Lori take a chance! And I knew what was going to happen with the prisoners. Never would have worked for those particular ones. The kid is still irritating and acting stupid – just as soon a walker drag him off!

I’ve no use for Brad either. He was really cute in “Thelma & Louise”, but I haven’t liked him since then – not appealing to me and with the exception of the baseball movie, not cared for those I’ve seen with him. I don’t get that he’s always touted as a “huge star”, when most of his films bomb, at least in the US.

Sam, yes Lori took a big chance. Maybe the writers want us to like her a little more. WD during dinner????? Are you nuts????? ;-)

Agree with Harriett on the 2 sides of Angelina. Her philanthropic work cannot be denied. Good for her. On the other hand, her predatory female tendencies cannot be denied either. Bad for her. However, once again, Brad was perfectly capable of turning down the offer. The fact that he didn’t makes him the guilty party, imo.

I knew Jennifer Anniston was in trouble the minute I heard her husband had been cast with Angelina. Everybody else did, too. She even made a trip to their location, for all the good it did her. I knew Brad would fall.

D: I KNOW – crazy, huh? But better than just before bedtime – I got so keyed up every week with “24″ it took hours to get calmed down enough to try and sleep, and “WD” is way more intense most of the time. Having to get up @ 5:30 am is not conducive to zombies at bedtime! Luckily, “Falling Skies” is a bit calmer, so I can watch it and not get too hyped up. “WD” is like giving pure sugar to a 3 year old at night!

This catching up business is hard – still have one more “666″ to go (love that show, makes up for disappointing first ep of “American Horror Story”), one WD, 4 Revenges, 3 Once Upon a Time, 3 Revolutions,
“The Girl”, 2 Elementary, one Person of Interest.

Mercedes: Girl, you’ve already got a month worth of shows, it you don’t watch anything currently! But, “Pretty Little Liars” in on ABC Family tonight at 8:00 – it’s the Halloween special. If you’re on Comcast that’s 54 – or 854 for HD.

I fell asleep after the first 20 mins of the premiere of 666, so decided it’s not for me. Watching “Revenge”, “Once Upon A Time” (but not really all that invested in it – just seems stupid football pushes “Amazing Race” way late most weeks, so it’s the only thing to watch). “Am Hor Story” proved last year to be way to creepy for me, especially late at night. And I already DVR too many things to add another anyway.

Back from another endless doc appt for mom.

I have watched 666 twice and am having trouble getting into it. I am also becoming more and more interested in Revolution. It feels like they are giving us tiny pieces of a huge puzzle. I enjoy Once Upon a Time very much. The sub on the island show is starting to bore me. It better get moving or I’ll be gone soon.

I’m a big fan of Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and the hilarious Modern Family. I’ll watch The Office until it ends this year. So far this season is better than last season’s debacle. Why they kept going after Steve Carell left is beyond me.

The Sub show (”Last REsort”) actually had a lot more action last week than any of the previous. I was going to give it one last shot last week, so will watch again this week. It needs to keep the action level up some. It was interesting that the evil govt people behind whatever’s going on are trying to make the asst captain think his wife is cheating with his best friend, and make her think her husband is cheating with the French lady. Hope the interesting pot-stirring continues or I’ll be gone too.

In “Once…” – I get tired of all the back and forth between the two worlds, with the times in the story so far apart in each of the worlds. And too many “storybook” characters who have nothing to do with each other jumping in and out – Capt. Hook – really???He and Snow White/Prince Charming just dont gel together to me.

Another loooooooong day close to an end!

Mercedes: sorry about your cat. Broken arms/legs are very hard to heal on 4 legged kids. We ended up spending over $5000 for little Poodle’s broken arm – cast for 6 weeks/bombed out, then orthoped surgery and metal. And she was never quite the same vivacious, lively little girl after all that. Seemed sad and too mature for her age (1 1/2 when it happened). Broke my heart. But she lived for 13 years.

It’s understandable that a ratings drop would translate into an ad rate drop, so that’s not really a surprise.

Mario Lopez AND Khloe Kardashian co-hosting X-Factor. …Another good reason to DVR the show! (Something else to fast-forward through.)

So XF finally got to air its “green mile” episode in its entirety last night. Just have to ask this question re picking the contestants: Was it just an accident that there are 8 guy acts and 8 girl acts? Are we supposed to believe that, unbeknownst to each judge, they just happened to pick an equal number of guy and girl acts? Are we stupid???? No we’re not!
