Meet the ‘Long Island Medium’ Theresa Caputo Oct. 24 at the Fox Theatre

Not since John Edward has a medium taken the country by storm the way Theresa Caputo has since her TLC show “Long Island Medium” debuted a year ago.
Her reality program is a blend of day-to-day life with her family, spontaneous readings to strangers on the street and more formal connections with the dead for clients who request them. She’s loud and gregarious, with gravity-defying hair, a heavy Long Island accent and fabulous shoes, a Yankee version of TV host Nancy Grace.
Caputo has started doing theater shows and is already so popular, she has booked the Fox Theatre for October 24 to do live readings.
She’s already netted a Priceline commercial and a skit making fun of her on “Saturday Night Live.”
We talked to her by phone last week:
AJC: What did you think of the ‘SNL’ sketch about you?
Caputo: I thought it was hilarious. They did it perfectly. My only thing: they didn’t get my hair high enough!
AJC: You seem to get people to cry at the drop of a hat. Do you always keep Kleenex with you just in case?
Caputo: I don’t mean to make people cry. It’s their loved ones! They’re making them cry. I think I should take stock in tissue paper!
AJC: I read that you first started speaking to spirits at age four. Did you realize you were special?
Caputo: I thought it was normal. Then my friends started telling me it wasn’t normal, that only crazy people heard voices. So I started blocking them out. I suffered a lot of anxiety. Only later in life did I realize I was communicating with spirits.
AJC: How old were you?
Caputo: I was 28. I went through a process of “Who am I? Why was I chosen?” My higher power told me this was my journey in the physical world. This was my purpose. I put all my fears in God’s hands. It was just amazing. For 12 years, I’ve been building my business through word of mouth. I didn’t have a web site. Even before the show started on TLC, I was booked for two years and had a waiting list.
AJC: What’s your stage show like?
Caputo: I take what I do seriously but in a lighthearted way. All I guarantee is my great hair, nails and shoes. The rest is up to the spirits. The show is usually two hours. I know my limits.
AJC: What do you say to skeptics?
Caputo: I totally respect skeptics. I get it. They don’t have to believe in what I do. I just want a skeptic to experience it before they start judging me.

My wife asked me to buy tickets for her. I spent 80 bucks a pop to hear this chick cold read the crowd by asking women with Vito tattooed on their forehead if they have ever been in a relationship with a guy whose name starts with a V. Like all mediums, clairvoyants, etc., this chick is a total fraud. I’ve seen little bits of the show, and she’s not even a very good cold-reader. But she know how to make money from the rubes, so she’ll just keep laughing her way to the bank and depositing the checks from the unibrows and mouth-breathers who believe that she has “a gift.”

Theresa I really need a reading I lost my dadin 2007 and my mother in 2009. I was told after both of their passing that I was not my fathers biological child. This has really hurt me and harden my heart. I miss him so much I can not function as a person since his death. I recently lost my job becaue of the angry that Ifeel. Hey Rodney, I’m a skeptic, could you offer me free tickets to attend so I don’t have to seperate myself from my hard earned cash?? After all, if one goes, they are not guaranteed a reading and there is no private readings if you purchase a VIP ticket. I still want to go, just to check it but not pay to go………..can you hook a sister up??

I definitely will be going. I think it is your choice to believe or not. However I choose to believe. I watch her show all the time, I laugh, I cry. I pray (and I shouldn’t pray for this) that he comes through. Just to hear a simple hello would be amazing. I do know that with hundreds of people I have a slim chance. But it is worth the small chance. I am more than willing to take this chance.

We need u here Theresa in Terrell, Texas cause there is allot of energy in my sisters house and that’s the house my mom died in, she is trying to tell us something cause the garage door went up by itself, car alarm went off and no one was around the car or the button, lights coming on before u touch them…she was really active ths past weekend…come to Terrell, Texas….WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT SHE WANTS TO SAY………….

I love Theresa and her show! I think it is ok to be skeptical,its not for everyone. However, why insult the people that do believe?? Maybe it brings them comfort and hope! If someone wants to spend THEIR own money to have a reading and its doing something for them, why shouldnt they??? Thats their choice. I hate that people actually take the time to post negative mean statements to others instead of redirecting that energy and saying something positive. If you are a non believer, then why even take the time to visit this page and post nasty comments. Where is the love people????

Theresa, I need to get closure of my mom’s death. I took care of her for 45 years and the day before she died she would not look at me or talk to me. She passed 8 years ago and I cannot get past this. I am 70 years old and live in S. Florida . I have heard her call my name during the night. Please help me.

We losted my sister in law a month ago, she had a heart atack and was mi youngest brother’s wife and they have 2 girls. When she pass we were on family reunion and we all (family) still on shock. Need to know if she has something to tells us, I can fill that

For about 5 months she lost 60 lbs and would not go to the doctor. ( very stubborn ). Finally when she went they could not find out what was wrong for over 5 years. First was lymphoma cancer then TB then was granuloma In lymphnodes. Could never come a conclusion as to what she had. She was on a TPN food because she had tumor in her stomach the size if two of her fists which was depleting her body of nutrients. She was on the TPN for years

Put so many stints in that she blew every vein and they were gonna have to go through pelvis. She worked fortaco bell as an area coach and made a lil over a 100k a year. We were not bad off but disability only lasts so long. So at age of 16 I pretty much had full time job at a restaurant as a host but would clock out and stay and clean servers tables and roll their silverware so I could have enough money to support my family. I had to be the man and provide for family. (Mom and dad divorced at 2). When her disability ran out she tried to go back to work but could not cause she was still sick. This put even more pressure on us. I came home directly from school one day and had to go to.work so I get dressed and when its time to leave I go into my mommys room (she was in bed) to tell her bye and that I love her. But for some.reason as i was walking out for some.reason I turned back around cause she just seemed down. I made sure I got her attention and said MOMMA I LOVE YOU so much she said it back and I left to go towork and receved a phone call at work. (I was the to go person by then so i answered the phone) it ws my dad saying I need u to come to my house now and don’t ask why just come on. I was instantly worried and rushed outta there. Called my sis which was 18 at time while I was 17 and she and i both thought it was something to do with momma. I got to my dads with my sis in floor crying in her best friends arms. Little did I know, my mommy had committed suicide. I was the biggest mommas boy on earth and would give anything for some closure. My sis got into argument with mom week before it happened and moved in with my dad. Then all of a sudden aweek later the unthinkable happened. I would give anything for my SIS and I to have some closure. It has been tearing me up for over 5 years. I couldnt imagine how she feels but I just want her to know its not her fault. Please respond Theresa.

I have watched Theresa since she first aired on TV. I watch all of her reruns as well. She is truly authentic! My sister and best friend died March 2007 and I have felt her with me. I know there is life after our physical body dies. I can’t wait to join my mother, sister and others’ on the other side.
But I would like to know if after we die can we be reborn into another era? Such as 1830? I sure hope so!!!! Please answer Theresa. I feel as though you and I are friends. You are so funny, witty, and I truly admire and respect you!

I have a fiance of 15 year. When I met her, her mother had just past from a head on car reck. The most difficult part of the death was that for 13 years before this her mother battled cancer. After fighting and given a clean bill of health she was taken anyway. My fiance and family have basicly given up on life and I need someone to connect them with her one last time. I would do anything to make this happen. If you could help it would be appreciated more than anyone could ever known. Thank you and your amazing.

Theresa, Do you have any plans of coming to wisconsin to do readings? My daughter who had a very good life while growing up turned 18 & left the house during the nite, will not talk to her dad or I. She has yet to give us the reason for leaving in the middle of the nite. All we are trying to do is figure out what happened & why? We do not know if you do readings on the living but if you do we’re hoping you may have some insight to how she can go from being such a loving, caring sweet girl into a spiteful grudgeful, girl, we don’t even know if she still loves us or misses us? I was also wondering if you could come to my area. I live in venice florida. I am kind of a sceptic, but I saw a show yesterday that changed my mind. You knew things that I dont think you could have known unless you have a real connection. My grandma also senses spirits, but in a different way i think (she can tell you if a house is haunted and if it is friendly or not). I dont know for sure, but that is what my mom says.
We also have the countries best beach. It’s called Siesta (in Sarasota)! You might like it. We have something called the drum circle, where everyone dances on the beach to the sound of drums. Its quite interesting and happens every Sunday at sunset. Last time I was there, they had fire dancers! This one girl was even hula hooping with a hula hoop that was on fire! It was awesome!
Please let me know if you could come here and maybe see me. I would appreciate it.

Theresa is the real deal. I don’t believe in other mediums. The other ones on TV are so obviously fake, but Theresa has proven time and again that she is the real deal. Just watch a couple of her shows and you have to believe. I have an appointment with her. I live in Oregon and my daughter and I are going to fly to Long Island to see her. We so believe in only her. All you who make jokes, just keep them to yourselves please. Nobody wants to hear your smart mouths. You sound like idiots.

My daddy passed away sudden at 86 after raising me by himself cause my mom died when i was 7, I wish I had been able to say I love you but mostly to tell him I am sorry for leting him down and not protecting him, His wife was a lot younger him and I never trusted her. She found my daddy at 2am but didn’t call for help until 4:18am and we found out that she had transfered 300,000 the day that my daddy had a stroke. Everything she promised my daddy to lied about. My mom and dad purchased there home in 1966 and was to be mine but that never came. In May 2010 our family home flooded that and everything was ruined and my daddys home had to be rebuilt from the inside out. My daddy was living in a travel trailer in the driveway and could see his home but never got to see it finished. My daddys home was 3000 sq ft but he died in a space that you couldn’t move around in. I am so glad that my daddy wasn’t here to see the real truth about Ruth and how much she lied. She wouldn’t let me back in the house and had my parents items sent to me in a “POD”. I hired an atty but fired him and they had me arrested with a bond of $75,000.00 but all the charges where dismissed. Not a day doesn’t go by that I don’t talk about him or cry and I think if I could just say to him I am sorry for not protecting him more and know that he is now happy with my mom and my brother I could begin with healing. I just feel so guilty!
