In an HLN first, network acquires ABC show ‘What Would You Do?’

Atlanta-based HLN is picking up at least 35 episodes an ABC News prime-time show “What Would You Do?”

This is the first time HLN has ever picked up a broadcast program.

“What Would You Do?” is part “Candid Camera,” part sociological experiment. Over the years, the Primetime staff would hire actors and create scenarios in public places such as a coffee shop employee verbally abusing a fat person and seeing if any regular folks will intervene. At a certain point ABC News’ John Quinones will come by and tell people what is really going on.

HLN debuts the show Oct. 21 with back-to-back episodes on Thursday and Sunday nights from 9 to 11 p.m.

“HLN is exploring new programming dimensions that connect us with a broader audience while continuing to deliver what HLN fans want: must-see, must-share news that relates to how we live today,” said general manager Scot Safon. “‘ What Would You Do?’ is a great program that invites viewers to question how they might behave when confronted with situations drawn from everyday life and daily news, from eye-witnessing abusive behavior to blowing the whistle on a scam. This show allows you to put yourself inside the kind of stories we are covering every day.”

In other programming shifts, Dr. Drew Pinsky will shift focus Mondays through Wednesdays so he will interact with the audience more on a show called “Dr. Drew on Call.”  The network also recently added “Nancy Grace Mysteries” on Fridays, a documentary-style look at America’s most unforgettable mysteries.

In the same way Kentucky Fried Chicken renamed themselves KFC to de-emphasize the word “Fried”, Headline News renamed themselves HLN to de-emphasize the word “News”

What Would I Do ???

I would do whatever my Magic Teleprompter (& my Chi-Com political donors) told me to do.

Another candid camera show would have to be that of Punk’d. The Ashton Kutcher created show from MTV about celebrities in unpleasant moments… and its caught on camera… and Ashton (in most episodes) would appear at a certain point to surprise the celebrity that got Punk’d.

Another would probably have to be Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, which will be back in 2013… over on NBC.

Hey HLN, how about leaving the “shows” to your sister networks and focus on HEADLINE NEWS?
