92.9/The Game unveils opening lineup, launch date of Oct. 24

929 sport logoThe new sports talk station 92.9/The Game unveiled its opening daytime lineup today with a launch date of Wednesday, October 24.

I’m at an Atlanta Press Club Hall of Fame dinner so I’m going to keep this brief now and flesh it out later, either here or on another blog entry. I spoke briefly with David Dickey, who runs rival 680/The Fan and he noticed that this is clearly targeting a diverse audience, which makes sense since CBS Radio in Atlanta also owns V-103 and WAOK-AM. There could be great cross-promotional and cross-advertising opportunities. And guest stars who show up on V-103 could pop right over to 92.9/The Game. “It’s a long and expensive journey,” Dickey said. “I wish them luck.”

Other observations: The backgrounds of these personalities are very NBA/NFL focused. And this is unlikely going to be the lineup in a year’s time. The 2 Live Stews, who were taken off the air on 790/The Zone on Sept. 12, won’t be available due to non-compete clauses for a few months.

6 a.m. to 10 a.m.:

- NBA-TV host Rick Kamla since 2003.

Randy Cross

Randy Cross

- Three-time Super Bowl champion and CBS Sports analyst Randy Cross, who prevaricated last week by telling me he had no plans to join the station.

C.J. Simpson, who does in arena work for the Atlanta Hawks. CREDIT: NBA

- C.J. Simpson. She broke into the business with Hot 107.9 and Ryan Cameron, then co-hosted her own morning show with Murph Dawg on 95.5/The Beat until 2010. She stayed with Murph Dawg until recently as a morning host in a couple of smaller Cox markets.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

JamieDukes1

Jamie Dukes

- Jamie Dukes. The former NFL offensive linesman worked for 680/The Fan for awhile with Christopher Rude. He went to the NFL Network in 2006 and has been doing regular football commentary in different venues ever since. I had heard his name floating about the past couple of weeks, too.

Jerome Jurenovich

Jerome Jurenovich

- Jerome Jurenovich. He does pre and post-game shows for the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Braves for Fox Sports South.

2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Carl dukes

Carl Dukes

- Carl Dukes. He recently left a sports station in Houston where he was a talk host. His name was in the ether as well before this announcement.

kordell

Kordell Stewart

- Kordell Stewart. He’s a former Pittsburgh Steeler, who happens to be the husband of a new “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Porsha Stewart.

Rachael Baribeau

Rachael Baribeau

- Rachael Baribeau. What I can figure out on line is she was doing sports on a station in Birimingham.

Terry Foxx, the new program director who has worked at ESPN and was last working at a sports station in Pittsburgh, said the evening hosts have not been finalized but should be soon. I hear Mitch Evans, who was hired while the station was still Dave, will be doing an overnight shift.

6 to 10 p.m.

UPDATED: Jason Goff from Chicago’s 670/The Score will be part of the evening team with some dude named Mac.

Among others who will contribute to the station:
- Dennis Scott of NBA TV and a former NBA player
- Bob Neal, who contributes to CSS
- Brian Jordan, former Brave and Braves analyst for Fox Sports South
- Sam Mitchell, a former NBA player and coach.

- Chuck Smith, formerly of V-103 and the Falcons

Not a big fan of Randy Cross. I guess he’s OK doing sports, but in the past he has often infused his politics with his takes. Not what I listen to sports radio for. Just sayin…

First glance doesn’t show me any reason for current sports stations to worry. Especially don’t see immediate threat to drive-time, IMO. Of course they aren’t even on the air yet, just reacting to bios.

Not one of these people could get a sniff of a job at the other TWO sports stations in the city. That should tell us something.

Yawn.

This has got to be the WEAKEST LINEUP EVER of any sports-talk station in Atlanta…This might be OK in say, Oklahoma City or Tulsa, but not Atlanta.

I wonder if Jerome Jerfaeaeafafich has any tickets that he’s gotten for free that he’d like to sell?

This is a temporary line up at best. As soon as Jim Rome moves to CBS Sports Radio, he will probably join this line up.

I know this is hotlanta, but this station is missing the boat as most of the loyal atlanta fans want college – not pro.

There are too many transplants in atlanta to focus on pro – and, with only 40+ years of pro teams, you dont’ have the generational die hards (like Chicago etc).

College teams bring the die hard loyal listeners because there is 100+ years of generational lineage – a pro focus will not work! Get a college focus with big time college names. BTW, No one cares about the Hawks.

Is this station targeting the black demographic?

These guys need some former SEC players and/or Coaches jacked up on Red Bull talking College Football if they want to complete. If they try to talk a lot about the NY Giants/Yankees/Jets, The NBA and Lord help them Ice Hockey this will be a short lived experiment.

At least Jerry Sandusky is going to prison and won’t have to hear this garbage that is going to be on 92.9 like the poor citizens of Atlanta will.

Therefore, who is REALLY being punished here?

this is V103 with sports.

only a targeted demographic in atlanta will be interested in the hawks.

I actually like Randy Cross very much, but he appears to be the “Jeremy Lin” on this radio lineup that has the relative demographic diversity of an NBA roster.

Hmmmm……Could work, almost any other sports radio show could be beat that grainey weak signal from 790/the zone as well as their boring broadcast starting with that Mayhem in the A.M. crew…especially that annoying Steak Shapiro!! New station should’ve made sure they included The Stews while they still have some sort of following. We’ll see!!!!

Wow. Jamie Dukes is a great catch for this lineup, but other than him….Zzzzzzzzz. Nobody is switching over for Randy Cross or Kordell. If they don’t have a long term plan, they are in big trouble.

Dukes sucks. He’s been all over the dial and from one network to the next. Hopefully, this will be his last stop. Sucked on 680. Sucked on NFL network and will surely blow hard here too.

Was also expecting Tony Barnhart. He works for CBS…

I am hoping some contracts from the other stations need to expire…
I can’t remember which one was first, but one of the other sports radio stations tried this same format in Atlanta and it failed — they tried to bring in a guy from the North East to run the programming, he didn’t understand southern football and it failed.

Perhaps Kordell Stewart can have Cam Newton and Vince Young in the studio for an on-air interview, and the 3 of them can all take turns crying on one another other and talk about what great COLLEGE quarterbacks they all once were…
