Simon Cowell seeking not the next ‘Idol,’ but the next Steve Jobs

Gosh. It’s been dead news days in terms of “Idol” lately. I’m groping around for something to write.

I’m down to mentioning a reality show concept with will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas and Simon Cowell: seeking the next Steve Jobs, sort of an “X Factor for Tech.” The singer mentioned this to the U.K. Sun. Not sure how that would work, per se.

- On “The X Factor” last week, we had one Atlanta contestant, a music coach named Tara Simon. She came off a bit arrogant back stage but didn’t do too badly on stage. She’s going to be in boot camp. There is a spoiler page on MJ if you want to see if she made it through.

- Jason Aldean, who is married, apologizes for kissing some former “Idol” contestant I don’t even remember.

- Adorable, nearly bald Kellie Pickler co-hosts with Anderson Cooper:

XF for tech?????? That’s just strange!

Kellie Pickler is a hoot.

She could have picked someone besides AC. Can’t even watch his shows for one minute. What was she thinking?

Thanks for the new thread Rodney.

I remember the Idol contestant about as much as I remember who Jason Aldean is. Some bloke that sang with Kelly Clarkson, right?

Oh no, not Anderson Cooper, you know what he is don’t you?

As much as I would like to watch Kellie, I had to turn it off after a couple minutes because I cannot stand Anderson Cooper.

Brittany Kerr is a super-model type, I think she was a cheerleader for a Pro Basketball team..

The 540 pound guy has been on some type of reality show and it’s pretty sure he was scripted-in to the official live auditions and not just a random contestant that made it through the pre-audition phases. They are getting extra press because he is on the show. Same with Gene Simmons daughter, getting more attention for the show at this point.

The 2 Melanie Amero releases have been in the slick-Pop autotuned category, and have not gone very far at this point. She has a great voice, but it is not utilized by what they have produced with her so far. Shows to go you, that the labels and producers don’t always handle talent well, even with a 5 million (supposed) promo package. She needs better songwriters and more distinctive arrangements that feature her voice and range – to get an identity in the Billboard top 40.

“She came off a bit arrogant back stage…”

That’s understating it quite a bit, RoHo! But Tara Simon did get a bit of a reality check onstage. She over-sang big time and I thought she was put through more on looks and stage presence.

Sophie Simmons was better than I expected but definitely chose the wrong song for the audition. But I applaud her for trying to get there on her own rather than using her dad’s connections. Which is something Tara Simon assumed and was criticizing Sophie for.

Note to Tara Simon: If you’re really THAT confident of how great you are and of winning, why worry about someone who you think is there because of who her dad is rather than any real talent?

Funniest line of the night (from Demi Lovato): “That’s where I know you from! (Then to Simon…) That’s NICK Simmon’s sister!” Yeah, Demi, …’cause he’s the famous Simmons that everyone knows!

Where have Melanie Amaro’s 2 songs been released? Still haven’t heard anything of her’s (or the 2 previous The Voice winners) on the radio. But PhilX2 has been on FM and “Home” has been used all over the place.

Conclusion: Idol is still the leader in the marketing side (as well as the ratings side, of course).

I did hear Melanie’s song on a “rate the new-release” type of radio station a while back. But the rating was nothing special. This was her first release I think—

A drum driven electro warble production.

Her second was “Love Me Now”.

This is Amero’s 2nd release, which had a little better reviews than the first. She really needs a good ballad type of song, rather than trying to force her into a Pop-Hop category, she’s not the Katy Perry type. The X-Factor handlers are doing poorly in working with her talent – - As some may recall, Adele refused to go on a British talent show, just for this reason, as they try to push you into a mold and wear all the hats they want to produce a show.

Cats do have nine lives… mine is ticking hers off rapidly, though.
This is the Broken Cat with cast on a back leg. She’s mostly been dozing in a nicely prepared bathroom, from which she hobbles into various bedrooms.

This evening I feel asleep, awaiting “Major Crimes”, and when I woke up, the cat was gone. Looked into every conceivable nook and cranny (closets, baskets, etc.) No cat. Put on boots and umbrella and went out into that nasty rain. Found wet cat in car port IN A WHEEL BARROW.

Morning!

Hope your cat is better soon, Mercedes.

Did anyone watch TV last night? Another blind audition? Are they moving on yet?

Really enjoyed Looper. Convoluted but in a good way. Interesting concept. Jeff Daniels is scary brilliant. Joseph-Gordon Levitt is very good. Bruce Willis is tragic and desperate. The ending surprised me even though is was probably inevitable.

In yesterday’s WSJ, Simon Cowell is NOT happy at all about a) the low ratings for “The X-Factor” and b) the “spoiling tactic” of “The Voice”. He propose that the two sides “meet and find a way to stop beating each other up.” How un-Simonesque!

Mercedes… aww, poor Broken Cat! I guess she (he?) wanted to go outside and was tired of that nasty weather! (I was tired of it too!) Sending good thoughts for quick healing!

I also ran across the Carrie behind the music special the other night. I didn’t realize it was new. Rodney, yes, definitely find when it’s on again, and watch!! It was really, really good. :-)

Guess I’m the only one here who did not like Looper – too violent and senseless for me. CSI is certainly advanced enough now to identify just about any body – seems like it would be just as easy to burn the bodies at that future date as in past.

I am anxiously awaitiing “Argo” – looks terrific! And Woodpappy, your nephew managed to make the really cute Joseph GL look ugly with all that prosthetics stuff – he was barely recognizable as the same guy, but it all looked real!

So far, The X-Factor has gambled and lost on spending multi-millions for Britney Spears. She’s no longer a teen heart-thob and is more of a media item than a hot cuurent star. Her prescense and personality as a judge is not bringing any accolades from most viewers or writers.

The show has featured more talent this time, but the Factor can also be a manipulative operation that is prone to slip-in:
fake acts, Jerry Springer scenarios, set-to-fails, dismiss good talent for inner-producer politics, edit in & out sections of pre-show interviews to suit their wishes that can cast someone in a good or bad light.

The guy that formerly sang with Britney Spears said they filmed him in an interview that was supposed to run before he sang, promised him it would be run, then cut it without informing him.

but it’s also true that the show can be a great springboard for a good artist that deserves exposure – even if they don’t make the top 5. Boot Camp should be interesting.

Seth, as Simon gets more and more desperate for ratings, I expect the show to become an even bigger circus than Ringling Bros.

Morning!

Well, blogsters, this is either a huge publicity stunt or Nicki Minaj is really everything we suspected she’d be. There was a video but it has been removed:

Nicki Minaj derailed the “American Idol” auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina today, after swearing at her and threatening, “I’m gonna knock you out” … sources tell TMZ.

Multiple sources are telling us there was a blow up between the two … Nicki left, then came back and the fireworks continued, culminating with the threat. We’re told producers ended the auditions for the day so the two judges could cool down.

Big wigs on the show seem uncharacteristically upset by the blow up — it appears this was no joke and it seems producers are worried about Mariah and Nicki co-existing for the long haul.

Seems “Idol” tries to be a reality show… scripted fights… yuck.

Thanks, Jenny, for comment last night. Suspect Broken Cat had issues with new cat litter. Got her old one at Publix and she’s fine with it. Visit to vet yesterday to cut up cast, clean leg, replace dirty/wet cotton, put old cast back on… thousand dollar cat seems much better today. Next, I’m looking into health insurance for pets.

I know that there is no such thing as bad publicity BUT…..this, to me, is negative attention. With Idol’s audience aging, there will be a number of people who see this video and wonder if they should even bother watching Idol this season. And I don’t think Idol will get much of a “youth bounce” out of it either.

There’s a thin line between confrontations being uncomfortable and entertaining. I’ve seen people walk off the set, but if someone has to physically come between you…….I don’t know.

Most confrontations between The Voice have been entertaining. I just think the judges/mentors have great chemistry. The spats on XF (Simon & LA) are expected. The egos between Simon and LA are huge, but to me, it’s just friendly rivalry. Idol has experienced spats in the past. But I don’t know if they are ready for Atlanta Housewife type of confrontations…………uncomfortable to some…….entertaing to others. Talk about “not” being about the judges.

Deirdre

October 3rd, 2012
9:54 am

That’s the big fear for me, G. That these two divas aren’t going to be happy unless the viewers are talking about them instead of the singers. That’s the case on both Voice and XF. The judges’ “confrontations” on the Voice are friendly. On XF, LA Reid hardly exists anymore(and yes, I’m sure that will change when the next round begins) BUT an obscenity-laced tirade directed at one colleague from another does not have a place on a family friendly show. Yes, it will be edited but it has obviously made the news and will color peoples’ opinions, especially about letting their kids watch the show.

Deirdre

My point being that Idol isn’t on at 10pm on a cable channel. It is front and center at 8pm on a major network.

JTesla

October 3rd, 2012

Or it will fuel the desire to watch the train before it wrecks on live TV. We can moan all we want, we’re talking about a viewing public that watched Jersey Shore and Honey Boo Boo. Don’t blame the shows, blame the dolts that feed this type of entertainment.

Deirdre

October 3rd, 2012
10:12 am

Both Jersey Shore and Honey Boo Boo are cable. There IS a difference. And Idol has prided itself in being a show the whole family can watch. Is it publicity? Sure. Is it the kind of publicity Idol wants given that it appeals to families? I don’t think so but then, hiring Minaj in the first place tells me that they don’t care. They’ve been predicting a blow-up for weeks and here it is, possibly scripted. I don’t like what this tells me about Future Idol.

Will they get new viewers because of it? Probably. Will they keep their loyal viewers? Probably. Will the “on the fence” viewers return? Depends on who they are. Families, no.

JTesla

October 3rd, 2012

Broadcast television has been losing to cable for years. Sorry, but the “it’s on cable” argument now only applies to premium content. They knew what they were getting with Nicki, I just wonder if they expected to get this much.

Otherwise, I agree with where you are going, they will get new viewers and they will lose some old viewers. Granted, they were already losing longtime viewers so Nicki is a band aid… Or lobotomy depending on how you look at it.

Isn’t X-Fac over by the time Idol starts? Maybe Idol can hire the Lovato girl to replace this Minaj spectacle?

Have those of you on Comcast noticed that they changed the “On Demand” effective 10/1, and now there are many fewer options. Where they used to have all the main networks, incl Bravo, TLC, TBS, Style, E!, SyFy, et al, there are only a few of the majors, and with many fewer shows to choose from. This is sad for me, because I have watched many a show “On Demand” because so many shows were on at the same time (especially Sunday nights) that I couldn’t record them all. What a crock, with prices skyrocketing every year!

Sam-A, call up Comcast and ask them what they can do for you. We’ve done it a few times and our rates have stayed down. You don’t have to threaten to leave, just ask if there is anything that they can do for you in terms of deals. The worst that happens is they say “nothing”, which they’ve done to us once, but after receiving this advice from other people I’m starting to think that is a rare occurance.
