After Rush Limbaugh finished up his show at 3 p.m. , News/Talk WGST-AM was no more. Instead, 640 began playing the syndicated radio network ESPN Deportes targeting Spanish listeners. (Clear Channel, which owns the signal, also operates a Hispanic music station on the FM side at 105.3 called El Patron.)
This was one of the rumored changes I had heard on Wednesday, but Clear Channel GM Matt Scarano didn’t return calls for comment.
Limbaugh moves to AM 750 and 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB on Monday. I’m not sure what becomes of the other syndicated shows like Glenn Beck, “Coast to Coast AM with George Noory,” Michael Savage and Mark Levin. I presume some of the other talk stations on the AM dial may try to scoop them up.
WGST’s afternoon host Rusty Humphries, a syndicated talk show host who added a local Atlanta show at GST two years ago, said in an interview that he had already told GST months ago that he was going to leave after his two year contract was up next month and before this news came out.
He said the strain of commuting back and forth between his home in Oregon and Atlanta was too much given that he has two daughters on the West Coast. He plans to go back there full time.
When WGST management asked him to do the local show in the fall of 2010, he thought it would be a fun challenge: “I wanted us to go from worst to first. It didn’t happen, but I had a blast.” His syndicated show, he said, is heard on more than 50 stations nationwide (as well as online).
The ratings for WGST have been pretty steady the past few years. Limbaugh always brought in the biggest numbers. In August, the station ranked 21st overall in Arbitron ratings. Limbaugh can often reach top 10 among 25-54 men.

Before long, from what was once a great radio station, GST will be just a faint memory in Atlanta’s memory.
ALL of the idiots and blatant morons that ran it into the ground should be ostracized from mass media forever, and held as textbook cases of how to destroy a great station.

Clear Channel has FOR YEARS shot itself in the foot as far as being a competitor in the talk market in Atlanta, focusing ONLY on ratings and the associated revenue(s). Prostitution is “rampant” in radio; Whatever the dollar will buy. Clear Channel apparently uses WGST as a tax loss (write off) because IT’S NEVER BEEN ABLE TO COMPETE, either in talk or news since 2005. As for WSB, they see a “mainstay” of revenue (in the form of Neil Boortz) leaving (retiring) in January 2013, and they’ve signed Rush to “prop up” their revenue base, because Herman Cain WILL NOT inherit ALL of Neil’s listeners/sponsors. The signing of Rush with WSB allows WGST to terminate all remaining employees that have EVER BEEN any part of that operations’ success. It’s Sad; WGST used to be THE ONLY STATION my dial was ever set to for years!

In the 1950’s, WGST was a music station and played Easy Listening music during the day, but at night, they played Top 40 Rock and Roll with Paul Drew. The only other station in the ATL that played Rock was the legendary WAKE and Paul Drew became one ot he most important men in Radio for many years.
This is a very sad day for ATL radio. We have lost 96 Rock, Dave FM, and now WGST, a station we took for granted would always be there. They were the home of Georgia Tech broadcasts and I believe, the Braves for awhile.

The GST in WGST stands for Georgia School of Technology. It used to belong to Georgia Tech way back when they were know as The Georgia School of Technology and played Tenn instead of the Middle of Tenn. They sold it. Doesn’t bother me. I’ve converted to satellite radio. And if it goes under there is Pandora, CDs, MP3s, Blue Tooth, etc. or I could hire someone to sit next to me and perform. The world changes. Time was when you had to go to stores painted yellow to see porn. Now when I turn on the tv or the pc there is enough porn to convert the Marquis de Sade to a Holy Roller.

The idiots at Clear Channel must be writing a book on how to ruin a great radio station. It has been a downhill slide since before they got rid of Kimmer. They essentially got rid of all of the actual talent and piped in almost everything. Some of that was good listening but nothing could replace Kimmer, Wayne, and the Newsmaker Line Guy.
And just when I thought they were already at the bottom of the barrel they prove that they can take this great old station even lower. Time to celebrate illegals, (who won’t be listening either.)

I didn’t think of the possibility of this happening to talk radio until yesterday, but one way for the libs to overcome the conservative information talk shows, is for foreign or domestic entities to pay the stations enough $$$. That way Congress/President don’t have to legislate them off the air to keep everybody in the dark. Believe me, this is not an off-the -wall impossibility. For the almighty dollar, some people will do virtually anything.

WGST almost destroyed itself with Planet Radio, recovered, and then did it to itself again. Rob & Dave was Planet Radio Part II. With the same results. This is the station that let Clark Howard, Neal Boortz, and the Kimmer slip through their fingers. Now they’ve lost the cash cow Rush Limbaugh. Becoming a Spanish station is the sort of sad joke that the Kimmer might have told only now it’s coming true. What a crying shame.

Second, we all know you are smart enough to know how the process works, because you have enough brain cells to deceptively cheat the US system for years.
Um, racist (that label isn’t working anymore) Limbaugh is Rich because of people like you. You make him wealthy just listening for a minute or two.

Clear Channel should relinquish its license so WGST will have half a chance of surviving in the Atlanta market. It’s impossible to tailor and implement programming of so many stations by remote control from Texas. Attempts to woo an audience of sports enthusiasts will be a dismal failure since the broadcast signal barely makes it beyond its tower on Cheshire Bridge Road. Clear Channel’s biggest mistake was inspired by greed when it sold off its FM outlet. It then became a station with a very limited reach no matter what it programmed. It’s one station I would not want to include in a portfolio if it was given to me.
By the way, Savage won a long-standing fight on Thursday to break his contract with Talk Radio and voluntarily took himself off the air until he makes a deal with another network. WSB would be smart to add him to its nighttime lineup when once again available. Beck and Levin will land somewhere, but it will take some time for the dust to settle.

What a shame. I always held out hope that The Kimmer would come back some day. He was the BEST thing in Atlanta talk radio since I moved here almost twenty years ago. Since I despise Boortz, I suppose that is a good thing.

I logged in today and immediately renewed by SiriusXM subscription. Then, I took GST and WSB off my presets. Sadly, there was nothing remotely exciting to replace them with. I put 106.7 in twice, and added 91.9.
Does WSB think adding Rush is the future? Really? The King of Hate Talk is so over. Local radio ain’t local no more. Its enough to make me want to move. Even lame cities like Cincinnati and New Orleans have much better radio than Atlanta.

WSB dropped off my dial long ago due to the fact that it is now a combo traffic/commercial for traffic station with a couple of dropped in sentences from the hosts in between. Rusty was a turn off because he spent most of his time name dropping. Unlistenable, as Wachs once said.
Now, my radio time will continue to start with The Regular Guys, followed by Dennis Miller Radio online, Rush on KFI in LA, also online. After that, I’m open to suggestions. On the ride home, I listen to podcasts.
Looks like the only credible local news commentary comes from the News Jog, which has always, and ever shall be the best source of news, in my opinion!

In order to listen to an AM radio station you need to be able to actually hear it. WGST’s puny little after sundown signal is nothing but static out in the suburbs. I hate to see an Atlanta icon go down this way but they’ve known about the signal strength issue for years and just shrugged it off.

Despite all of the debacles of WGST’s past .. I was an Off-and-On listener of them for many years during the morning at work. The arrival of Savage Nation was icing on the cake, so to speak!!
But now that WGST is gone… I guess it’s time to go back to our local horrible/embarrassment of a radio station in the north section of Georgia (1230 WBLJ). I can’t stand all of their commericals on that station.. but is a tad better than listening to WSB. Or will have to begrudgingly switch to an ipad.

Wow. I remember WGST as the “GA Tech” station. When Clear Channel bought them and did away with WPCH as the only (surviving) “easy listening” FM station in Atlanta, and turned it into that horrible “The BULL” (yeah it IS bull–right name), I knew we were in trouble. When they then dropped the ONLY Sunday-morning religious programming left in Atlanta (on a mainline station), the “Sounds of Faith”, and when I called them about it snidely told me “well, it didn’t have the ratings”—really? Wonder how it lasted so long, then? — then I knew we were in even MORE trouble. I felt then, that this was a station that was NOT PAYING ATTENTION to what its customer base actually WAS, and actually WANTED. But…the last year or so I felt they were (slowly) pulling it back together and creating a station I might want to listen to again.
And now they pull this.
It’s getting so that there IS no radio left in Atlanta for those who like easy-listening, or classical, or religious, or conservative–or even just ENGLISH-based, programming.
HEY YOU BROADCAST COMPANIES OUT THERE—you are IGNORING an entire MARKET of people who are NOT hispanic, NOT immigrant, NOT liberal, and NOT secular!

I think what happened to 640-WGST was a buissness decision, and that is their buissness.
However,
All of you, that are criticizing the people, upset with WGST, for dumping our local talk show hosts, and conservative talk in general, in order to cater to the spanish speaking population, better be ware.
How would “You” feel if the AJC or WSBTV-2 was only available in Spanish…?
I guess if you speak Spanish, not so bad.
How about Arabic?
Where would you get your news from then?
Rob and Dave, Rusty, and all the News Room guys and gals, did a great job of keeping us close to our elected officials. (Both Republican and Democrat) And, holding them accountable to us, to their promises, and resposibilties.
You might despise Glenn Beck, Rush, and Michael Savage, and that is fine.
You might feel like they shoudn’t be on the air.
And if that is the case, you have no respect for the Constitution of The United States of America.
Specifically – The First Ammendment.

Illegal Aliens are running wild, we need to create laws to prevent this. WAIT, we have laws but the DEMOCRATS and RINOs don’t want to enforce them. Somebody should look up the definition of the word “ILLEGAL” and see what we should consider these people. Are they law biding citizens or law breakers? This would not have been so bad, perhaps, if some notice would have been given to the listeners. Like others, I thought there was a skit being played; however, I soon realized that something was amiss. I thought it was a glitch with my phone (streaming audio). But on the way home from work, I realized there was a major change with not freakin announcement. Thanks a lot. I had only been listening to WGST for about 6 months, but I thoroughly enjoyed the personalities. I also used to enjoy the Kimmer as others noted. Let’s get some things straight here. One, wgst’s ratings had been recovering the last two years thanks to Rusty, Rob and Dave, Glenn Beck and Mark Levin. Savage lent nothing to the station which is why he was on a three hour delay and he can suck an egg for all I care. That fiasco which came when they fired The KImmer and the rest of his crew back in 2006 as well as The Regular Guys at 96 Rock. Second, illegal aliens and homosexuals have replaced the heart and soul of the Atlanta market. Third, from now on I will never listen to a Clear Channel station again and will try get others to do the same. form now on Sirrus will be my best friend.

I thought they’d wait till after the election when (hopefully) the economy would turn around. I knew they were operating with a negative cash flow. I heard a lot of PSAs on there.
I thought they would sack the local talkers and plug into satellite all day as they’ve done that before.
This is punishment since the conservative audience did not buy enough spots to support the format.
Rather than fine tune it to make it profitable to operate as a conservative talker, they decided to tear down the foundation and start all over again.
The station is probably up for sale. It costs nothing to plug into satellite all day (except the electric bill). But I can’t see it marketable as a Hispanic formatted station. Is anybody aware that 1550 (a Hispanic station) just went dark???

Sorry folks! Bain Capital, in combination with Thomas H. Lee Partners, acquired Clear Channel, the owner of WGST 640 radio in 2008. Premier Networks, which syndicates the Rush Limbaugh Show, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Clear Channel, and thus is also under the Bain family of companies.
So don’t blame Obama, the Democrats, George Soros, or undocumented aliens for taking away your right wing security blanket or firing its employees. It was more likely done in the boardroom of Bain Capital to create a tax write-off for its wealthy owners to suck off the public dole, including at least one person who likes to fire people and is enamoured by car elevators, dancing horses, and public office.

I remember WGST in the early 1970s. It was all news 24 hours. They had the largest news team in the state. It was great. This is where Forrest Sawyer came from in the late 1970s. I used to work at WAGA when we hired him from WGST. I think most radio stations are almost bankrupt now since people are so spread out with satellite, wifi, etc. WSB plays commercials and promos about 80% of the time so they are about useless. The remaning stations just try increase commerical content to make up for lost ratings which just drives more people away.

WGST has been on the wane for many years. I started listening when they were on another frequency years ago. They tried in vain to displace WSB to no avail. My problem is, why are all immigrants that speak Spanish, are broadcasting only in Spanish? With all of the Spanish speaking stations already on the air, why do we need more? Most immigrants upon arrival here, try to learn ENGLISH! It would be nice, and very thoughtful if some of these stations would speak in both languages, then the general public would get an idea of what’s on their minds. To me, it’s an insult, as though they’re really saying that they DON’T want to learn English. All of the Europeans that immigrated here, quickly learned how to speak basic English.

Sorry folks. No way in hell you’re gonna convince me that a Spanish sports channel will bring higher advertising dollars than conservative talk radio. This is the problem with consolidation of our media companies- especially when they are reliant on the federal government for licensing- And a federal government intent on reinstitutung the “Fairness Doctrine”. Shutting down conservative talk radio that included Rush, Glenn Beck & Mark Levine!?!?!? 5 weeks before the most pivotal election in recent history?

Hey…almost forgot about “planet radio” some number of years ago What a joke that turned out to be.
Maybe that was the beginning of the end.

Hmmm. Well, I’ll never listen to 640 am again … and I am fluent in BOTH languages. Hasta Luego.

For all you regular coast to coast listeners…….THIS IS IT. Its everything that half that shows guests have been saying in actual manifestation. Atlanta, illuminati capital of the south US, plus CLEAR CHANNEL monopoly, plus BAIN CAPITAL, plus GOP/Mitt Romney illuminati poster child. Add all that up- SOMETHING HAD TO GO. We lost George Noory and the biggest night time radio program in history along with mr “I DONT LIKE MITT ROMNEY” Rush Limbaugh…….and pow, lights out. FYI: Coast to Coast is STREAMABLE LIVE FROM SOME 20 OTHER US STATIONS VIA YOUR PC. Just google: how do i now listen to coast to coast am in atlanta. The second hit is a streaming guide. PASS THAT INFO AROUND.

You can listen to Coast-to-coast am on 1510 out of Nashville. It, sadly, has a clearer signal most of the time than 640 did.
