Who won ‘So You Think You Can Dance’? Did Atlanta’s Cyrus ‘Glitch’ Spencer take it home?

Cyrus vs. Chehon

Atlanta couldn’t win “So You Think You Can Dance” two years in a row but it was close.

Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, the ballet dancer, beat out Atlanta’s Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer, a pop-and-lock hip-hop artist to win the male crown on the Fox reality dance competition.

Spencer got far further than he expected given his lack of choreography experience. He was a fast learner and a popular vote getter over the weeks with his emotional read on dances. But Wespi-Tshopp’s technical chops and noble demeanor clearly drew votes – more votes, in fact. He took home $100,000.

Creator Nigel Lythgoe received a lot of flak last week when he said he wasn’t going to vote for Cyrus. I figured this would actually help Cyrus fans to vote for him more aggressively. Obviously, it wasn’t enough.

(Eliana Girard beat out fellow Floridian Tiffany Maher on the women’s side.)

Cyrus picked his favorite routine of the season with Stephen “Twitch” Boss, the popular runner-up from season four and another pop-and-lock specialist.

“If Cyrus had not chosen this routine,” Lythgoe said, “I would have chosen this routine without question. Last week, Mary said you stole this show. In truth, you stole the season because your enthusiasm your energy, your hunger to learn new styles. We all enjoyed being on your journey. We recalibrated in Vegas who we were going to choose. We chose people who were brilliant at what they do and watched their journey.”

Last year, Marietta’s exuberant Melanie Moore won.

Given the slipping ratings of the show, now the question is: will Fox bring it back?

I love this show, but didn’t like the format this year. Hope it does come back.

One reason that Cyrus made it so far in the first place was because of the easy routines he ‘drew’ every week. He was not forced to show skill the way the other dancers were. In the group dances, they always hid him in the back or off stage (with an occasional dramatic bit from him) so the audience couldn’t see how untrained and amateur he really was. The judges puffed him up every week telling us how inspirational he was because he was such a novice and danced with heart and the teen girl audience ate that up.

I’m not saying I did not enjoy Cyrus (although his schtick got old to me) but I don’t appreciate him being crammed down our throats while all of the other much more talented dancers were sent packing. If SYTYCD is losing viewers, the blatant manipulation and repetitive routines are one reason why. Most of the choregraphers are so pigeon-holed that you know what the dance will be before it happens.

I agree, I think Glitch was boring after awhile. Also, when other dancers did the pop lock routines I felt in some cases they did it better than him. Congrats to him for at least placing 2nd with no formal training. The better dancer did win.

The better dancer may have won but the better performer definitely did not win. I truly find it hard to believe that Chehon got more votes than Cyrus, Cyrus had more personality in his pinky finger than Chehon had in his whole body. I know there are many dancers out there who were offended by Cyrus making it so far but maybe this will be a lesson to all of them that no matter how well you point your toes what really matters most is that the audience can connect with you.

The show is entitled “So You Think You Can Dance”, Not who’s the best dance. Be that as it may, all the contemporary dancers are doing the same routines only to different songs, various costumes/facial expressions. Some of the lifts are different but overall it’s routine

I enjoyed watching this young man represent Duluth, GA! No, he was not the most technical dancer out there, but his enthusiasm, willingness, hard work and teamwork impressed me each week. He always tried to do his best, which was refreshing to see.

Wise Grasshopper -
I agree, Cyrus was continually pushed to the back of the group routines because many of the choreographers did not know what do do with him, They would trot him to the front and have him do a few animatronic moves and then put him right back. They softballed all of his routines and had little or no choreography for him but the judges oohed and aahhed every week at his brilliance.

I hoie that they go back to the old format as some truly brilliant dancers were booted before Cyrus. I am sure he is a nice guy, but he didn’t seem particularly engaging more so than any of the other dancers, more often then not he had a look of “how did I get here, are you talking about me” look on his face.

I certainly hope Fox brings back the show! I was pretty surprised and also bummed that Cyrus didn’t win, I thought he had a really good chance because he picked up so many styles of dance without having the training that everyone else had. Not to mention his personality and charm was outstanding. This finale gave me and my DISH coworkers plenty to talk about at work today. Luckily my Hopper recorded it automatically with the Prime Time Anytime feature. I love how I don’t have to set up any timers for prime time programming that comes on major networks.

Congratulations to Cyrus GLITCH Spencer for making it to the finals of Fox network’s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. All of the dancers this season were great. Cyrus and Eliana were consistently the most popular by far. They connected with the audience from the first dance and kept connecting. Other dancers were great technical dancers but had to gain their connection. It takes a lot of heart and discipline to train yourself to dance, especially when you don’t have the resources to learn from a professional or a place to display your hard work. It was apparent from day 1 that both Cyrus and Eliana were passionate dancers and easily expressed their passion even when their steps were not perfect. The job of any dancer is to get you to understand the story they are relaying to their audience. With most dancers this season the movements were beautiful but the story was often lost. With Cyrus I could feel the story with him. Although Chehon is a great dancer this show will be the highlight of his career. Cyrus will go on to be in movies and sponsor products. Cyrus’ SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE experience is just the beginning of a long prosperous career. Both Chehon and Eliana will fade in the mix of some great dance company and will only be heard from by those who closely follow the companies they end up performing with. Good luck to them all.

Lois if you think Cyrus has a better future than any other dancer out there your nuts. Heck Cyrus wasn’t even the best popping dancer out there… Damn give me Turbo from the movie Break Dancing over him….

So disappointed Cyrus didn’t win. He was the favorite the whole time!! Do you think the producers altered the results for fear of making the “dance community” angry?? Like someone else has already posted, Cyrus had such natural skill and talent. Chehon is a cookie cutter dancer with learned skill. He doesn’t stand out and will be easily forgotten. They say on the show that it isn’t about the best dancer but America’s favorite. Chehon was obviously better but I don’t believe he was the fav. Soooo disappointed.

Actually Cyrus isnt from Atlanta he is from Dallas TX so even if he would have one which he should have than Atlanta still wouldn’t have a winner

I’m a 35 year old white guy who stumbled across Cyrus doing his thing on SYTYCD ! Been a big fan ever since. He is truly amazing, and talented. He needs a good agent quickly to get him some national commercial spots!!!! Those moves and great smile will get him paid one way or the other!

I would never watch SYTYCD. I am usually embarassed for people that are dancing…But Cyrus is on some new level stuff. VERY UNIQUE and fun to watch.

Imagine if Elvis presly had started moving like Cyrus does, back in the day! They would have killed him thinking he wasn’t human! Love ya Cyrus, you inspired me for sure!
