Atlanta couldn’t win “So You Think You Can Dance” two years in a row but it was close.
Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, the ballet dancer, beat out Atlanta’s Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer, a pop-and-lock hip-hop artist to win the male crown on the Fox reality dance competition.
Spencer got far further than he expected given his lack of choreography experience. He was a fast learner and a popular vote getter over the weeks with his emotional read on dances. But Wespi-Tshopp’s technical chops and noble demeanor clearly drew votes – more votes, in fact. He took home $100,000.
Creator Nigel Lythgoe received a lot of flak last week when he said he wasn’t going to vote for Cyrus. I figured this would actually help Cyrus fans to vote for him more aggressively. Obviously, it wasn’t enough.
(Eliana Girard beat out fellow Floridian Tiffany Maher on the women’s side.)
Cyrus picked his favorite routine of the season with Stephen “Twitch” Boss, the popular runner-up from season four and another pop-and-lock specialist.
“If Cyrus had not chosen this routine,” Lythgoe said, “I would have chosen this routine without question. Last week, Mary said you stole this show. In truth, you stole the season because your enthusiasm your energy, your hunger to learn new styles. We all enjoyed being on your journey. We recalibrated in Vegas who we were going to choose. We chose people who were brilliant at what they do and watched their journey.”
Last year, Marietta’s exuberant Melanie Moore won.
Given the slipping ratings of the show, now the question is: will Fox bring it back?
