‘Idol’ finally finalizes its judges: Mariah, Randy, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban

“Idol” confirmed at the last possible second on Sunday the quartet of Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj.

We’ve already spent the past few days scrutinizing this one so I don’t have much more to say. The New York City rounds have begun.

The spies told MJ that 30 contestants were sampled yesterday and almost all got through.

Gotta run. If anything else interesting “Idol” related happens today, I’ll just attach it to this.

They’ll have to make extra space at the desk for Nicki’s hair. But isn’t she clever? Look how she almost glows compared to the others in the picture.

I caught up on XF this weekend. I enjoyed both the girls. Demi seems sweet and she works very hard to be fair to the contestants. The show is trying way too hard with Britney. They want her to be the diva. However, I don’t see much ego coming from her. In truth, she looks scared, especially when some nutcase gets on stage. And putting Demi with Britney was brilliant. Demi is so open and friendly like a puppy while Britney comes across as the mature one. To be honest, I’m not sure that Britney will make it through the season. Simon is all over himself trying to make the show work and LA is still LA.

I will watch the show again. I thought using the Texas big hair blonde sisters making snarky remarks about all the other contestants was clever, especially when the singing sister couldn’t sing.

Frankly, The Voice is kinda boring compared to XF.

As for the talent on XF……….while some were fair to good, none left me wanting more.

Nice cup placement. The Coca-Cola cups that is.

Morning!
“Keith actually looks quite handsome”… maybe after a good clean-up. Chin scruff and limp hair is so over.

The more they make it about the judges… the less I want it to be about the judges. This is the best they could do???

Agree with Mercedes. The snippets were interesting, especially Mariah being her honest little ol’ self. Again, I’m going to give this group a chance.

I’m not disagreeing with the sentiment behind “is this the best they can do” it’s just when I read that the first thing that pops into my head is – yeah, couldn’t they find a replacement for Randy?

It’s about the judges NOW cuz we don’t really have any contestants yet…although I read that the judges saw 30 singers yesterday and only turned down a few. They will see 33 more singers today. If the show remains about the judges once it gets rolling, then I’ll have a problem.

TMZ claims Nicki and Mariah don’t like each other. Is this stereotyping two divas or the truth?

JTesla

I think it is TMZ being TMZ. They worked together, but I could see them not getting along. In fact I can see most people not getting along with either one of them, so it isn’t much of a stretch to think they might not get along with each other.

Ever since Paula left… it’s been more about the judges than the contestants.Kara, Ellen, Steven, J-Lo.

The PTB @ Idol keep asking “Who can we get a a judge that will bring in a wider demographic and excite our fans?” When they should be asking “What can we do to improve the depth and variety of talent so we appeal to a wider demographic and draw in more fans?

Curiousity about the judges only lasts the first few shows… after that, the talent carries the load. The worse the talent, the worse the ratings.

While I don’t like the choice of Nicki I will give her a chance. I thought Demi was a bad choice for X-Factor but so far I think she’s a great choice. If Mariah and Nicki don’t like each other then they’ll be some to tune in for the verbal catfights. Keith should do well and at least he doesn’t take the country look too far. IE sequin shirts and jackets. Randy? Well we know what to expect or not expect.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this panel. They have the potential to show a lot of personality, and to each bring something different to the table. I don’t mind if Randy remains the voice of the producers, just as long as the others have their own opinions, and just as long as they are not afraid to be judges. The show doesn’t need mentors, or people who are there because of their celebrity status, we need judges.

The X Factor has barely shown the contestants, and of those who have gotten through to the next round, only one or two have stood out. The first night, it was okay that they spent more time putting the spotlight on Britney Spears and Demi Lovato than on the contestants. That was an enjoyable episode, but the second episode was garbage. They only showed one contestant in the first thirty minutes, Britney seemed like she wasn’t there mentally, and there was only one good singer. Two, if we count the guy who seemed like an overweight version of Adam Lambert, but like Lambert, he was more of a good performer than anything else. The second show was a waste of time.

At this point, the finalization of Idol judges is not big news. I’ll give Nicki the same chance as I give Keith. I know nothing of the guy.

I liked the very first woman on X-Factor, she had her little girl with her, the one where they tried to make that poor Texas girl look mean and catty.

Otherwise, I’m still sitting it out until Simon rolls out his casting couch for the groups.

The girl who was bullied gavae a performance that – to me – was possibly the most poignant and captivating performance I’ve ever seen on a stage. I couldn’t keep from watching. Talk about connecting with song!

She wasn’t great… but considering the emotions and the situation… it was amazing. I think when she gets her next chance to perform, she’ll do lots better.

Can she win? Not on talent alone. But I hope she goes a long way. Chris Rene’ made it to the finals – primarily on his back story. She could too – but she seems more talented than Chris was.

@Who Cares….lets leave race out of the picture…may the best man/woman win…

Question for all of you.

Does any one really watch AI for the judges?

I guess you add a sense of celebrity to the show..but it’s really the contestance (and their talent) that people watch.

It would have been a bold move if AI decided to pick three or four judges that are the top producers of their genres. For example, AI should have selected the the music producers of the hottest talent we have going right now as judges……and see where the show would go…I think there would be some serious debates and some serious fire works….

AI you blew it again…I guess we have to look forward to another boring season. YAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, what happened to the video of the judges’ interviews?

And second, as Rodney said, TMZ is going to have a field day with these two ladies:

Mariah Carey wasted no time proving what we told you 2 weeks ago — there’s only room for one diva on “American Idol.”

Carey and Nicki Minaj went at it during the first “A.I.” taping Sunday in NYC. When Nicki started critiquing a contestant, Mariah would interrupt — not once, but many times. Each time Mariah interrupted, Nicki fought back by loudly talking over Mariah.

One “A.I.” spy said Mariah and Nicki tried to cover their disdain for each other but everyone saw through it, adding, “These girls just don’t like each other.”

You may recall, we reported when producers called Mariah to tell her that Nicki would probably be joining her as a judge, she hung up the phone.

Miss J…to answer your question, no, I don’t watch AI for the judges. For me, it is all about the contestants. However, the judges DO sometimes interfere with my enjoyment of the show and sometimes(very rarely) they enhance my enjoyment. I’d give you an example of the judging “enhancing” but it has been so long since it happened that I can’t remember one.

Miss J

@Deirdre..thanks….

The point I was trying to make is —AI needs to put the emphasis back on the contestants.

If they want to revamp this show the could:

1. Pick one celebrity judge and three top music producers as judges.
2. Once the top 12 contestants are choosen, assin three of them to each of the judges.
3. Like the show “The Voice” – let each judge mentor there three contestants.
4. Let America decide who is the best based on the performances and how well each contestant grows (each week) as a performer.

Now that would be a GREAT show…………….

I really feel like this is the beginning of the end for American Idol. It’s been going downhill for about the last 3 seasons and I don’t see this lineup helping. K. Urban and Mariah are about the only interesting “talents” there. Not taking anything from Randy, but he’s boring as all getout and Nikki, well, she better show “the girls” showing and keep the kooky outfits on the ready, cuz she has no lasting talent at all.

@ taboo……you’re right on boo boo

AI needs to increase their credibilty – adding music producers (folks who know how to read, write and produce music) would help increase the legit factor and and some intersting twists to the show.

Nikki can’t sing, K Urban is ok but you can’t say he is the BEST country singer ever…MC is a legend – this was a good pic…Randy has not produced anyone in awhile……

@Miss J: while I like the idea of producers as judges(even though I think LA Reid fails to impress on XF) I don’t agree that the judges should mentor. The Voice and XF both have the judges as mentors and that makes it a competition for the judges rather than the singers

Miss J, how can you go from saying that the show is about the contestants, who we haven’t seen yet, to saying that the show will be boring this season?

Unless they change the format, the show will be about the contestants. During Hollywood Week the judges hardly get any screentime. All of the drama, montages and storylines are about the contestants. The only time where the judges seem to be the focus is the first audition round. They really aren’t the focus, but that’s the only time where they are on screen a lot.

The judges will hopefully lure people into watching the show, but people will continue to watch or tune out because of the contestants.

Nicki Minaj is NOT a good singer. She is too whiny! Her voice irritate my cats! WHY is she a judge? Well I guess you don’t have to have real talent to be a judge on American Idol…That’s obvious!

Annie

I agree with Deidre. The Voice and X Factor have shown that mentoring puts the focus on the celebrity mentors/judges. This is one of the main reasons why the ratings for those shows aren’t as good as American Idol’s, and why people can’t seem to remember who the Voice contestants are. The competition is between Christina, Blake, Cee Lo and Adam, and not between the contestants.

This show is NOT about the judges…period. Why there are 4 again is unexplainable! I don’t make my choices based on what any of them say. Last year was the best season for talent ever…I just wish the judges would stay out of it, mentor where they can…but keep their personal/professional lives out of it and let the contestants shine where they may. I don’t even listen to what the judges say…and neither should any of these kids who give up so much personally and financially to chase their dreams.

No one is asking Nicki to sing, even though she does a fine job of doing so. She’s being asked to be a judge, and give her honest and entertaining opinion. It’s the same thing that Jennifer and Paula were asked to do, and those two certainly aren’t great singers.
