2 Live Stews are off 790/The Zone. Are they 92.9 bound?

StewsGolfing_400x274

It’s official but not surprising: 790/The Zone has taken the 2 Live Stews off the air three months before their contracts are up.

This may ease the transition to another gig. The most obvious place for Ryan and Doug Stewart to go is the new sports talk station at 92.9, owned by CBS, which launches next month, obliterating adult rock station Dave FM in the process.

There is a problem: a pesky non compete clause that is six months long and technically prevents them from being on air in Atlanta until July 1, 2013. Their agent Norm Schrutt is trying to get them out of their current contract early so the non-compete could kick in sooner. Obviously, 92.9 is trying to solidify its lineup as soon as possible and this non-compete is a hindrance for them do so since the station is interested.

Schrutt said he was a little upset with Zone management because they told him earlier this month they were going to possibly offer the Stews a contract extension next week. Instead, the Stews were told they were off air yesterday and could take a three-month paid vacation instead.

The Stews’ rise and fall on 790/The Zone was epic. The brothers started at night in the early 2000s, given a lot of leeway to learn the radio craft and built a following as African-American sports talk hosts in a world where minorities are still relatively scarce. Via their fraternity Omega Psi Phi, they would call each other affectionately as dogs.  Soon, they began calling their regular callers the same. And since calling a female caller a “dog” sounded inadvertently harsh, the pair began dubbing the ladies “poodles.”

They were loud and proud and would mix in entertainment/pop culture news in between comments about the Falcons and Hawks. They were not “wonky” stats guys but entertainers.

The Zone gave them gradually better time slots and soon, they were the station’s most popular show, pulling in huge  ratings in the afternoon. They nabbed a syndication deal with Sporting News, heard at one point on more than 20 stations. They also had a regular gig on ESPN. The Stews were flying high – until they weren’t.

In 2010, Lincoln Financial took over management of 790/The Zone and the Stews quickly found out their hip-hop approach didn’t appeal to the new guys in charge. Hip-hop songs that used to lead into their show were replaced by the Goo Goo Dolls. They were told to tone down the “urban” sound and entertainment news about Usher and T.I. They did as they were told. And to many readers of this blog, their schtick was starting to feel stale. Others felt they weren’t doing enough show prep. Some listeners were not thrilled by their support of Michael Vick in 2007 during the dogfighting scandal. (See the comments below.)

Then they lost their syndication deal last year. Their hours were cut. Ratings slipped. Then in May of this year, their show was diluted  into something called “The Red Zone” mid-days with Hans Heiserer and a rotating set of hosts. At the same time, ESPN chose not to renew their contract.

This past Wednesday was the Stews final hurrah on the Zone after nearly 11 years. Or as they often yelped about callers:  “And they’re gone!”

“They’ve been consummate pros,” said program director Bob Richards, who arrived 18 months ago.”I really respect the time and energy they put into this radio station. Without them, I’m not sure the station would have launched the way they did years ago.”

Doug Stewart, in an interview, chose not to dwell on the negative. “It’s incredible what we’ve done there over 11 years,” he said today. “I want to thank the fans who supported. This isn’t the last you’ve heard from us.”

Racism? Cmon man. At least spell it right if you’re gonna scream it. Yeah, the man is really holding them down, giving them THREE MONTHS PAID VACATION.

Hopefully, this change will result in Steak Shapiro moving to the midday slot, so he can bore Atlanta with his elitist anecdotes of hobnobbing in Buckhead’s finest restaurants. Hey Steaky, nobody gives a damn, CHA CHA.

I used to listen to them frequently and watch them with Skip Bayless on First Take, but my interest has leveled off over the years. Perhaps the new ownership’s limitations had a negative affect on their style. As a white guy (not boy, Ryan) in his 40s, I’ll look forward to giving them another shot on 92.9. I wish them nothing but the best.

The Stews made millions for that station – a 3-month paid vacation pales in comparison to the bucketloads of ad revenue they generated over the past decade – they had a great run and their’s is another “only in America” success story because as radio guys they were entirely self-made

I feel that these guys are pioneers/trendsetters for a hip sports radio show on AM! First off when it comes to AM radio, you think talk show, Meringue, old Gospel, old Rock, old anything, and Disney! For these guys to bring up not only sports happenings but “in the know” happening pop culture, urban happs, guy discussion, and a perspective that we all can relate to, they did it like no other for the genre! There is no other sports show period like theres. Where else can u reflect on old wrestlers and their moves, new rappers, hot women, current sports issues and more and from a perspective of two down homeboys from the South. This is a great lost for 790, the Zone, sorry I didnt get the same feel when their replacements DJ and Alge were in the booth. These guys are the real deal and if no one else catches on, it wont matter, they’ll make their way to the top again! Long Live the Stews! and what they do……..AND FOR ONCE can we stop typing RACIAL issues on the AJC boards lol! i dont care what the topic is…but it ends up here…………

Look….. the Stews downfall came because of THEIR racism towards anyone who isn’t black. I was a white listener who enjoyed the show at first, then once they started getting big time… here came the racist comments (and out went the show prep – I think Doug quit watching sports entirely). And there went Sporting New Radio, ESPN, and now the Zone. 92.9 if you want to be certain that I won’t listen to your station, give the Stews a slot.

…Stews being replaced with Barnhart and Durham, really? I will say this: Stews let this be a lesson to you in regards to black exploitation. The powers that be are not interested in a fresh and different perspective. Rather, it is interested in what it has always been – power, greed, and money.

Your show was too in your face for the conceptualize. They’re not interested in your opinion especially when it puts a mirrior in they’re 790 face. The only thing they’re interested in is N—-z! with a ball in their hand running up and down a field. They are not interested in your opinion. Seeing as to how you’ve played the game and they haven’t, you would think they would be, but no, rather they prefer Barnhart and Durham (southern aristocrats) from the good ‘ole boy network to further their illusions of granduer, while furthering their exploits. So, let me see if I have this right: ratings are the key metric in radio and they had the highest ratings on 790/The Zone in 2010 when the geniuses at Lincoln Financial bought the station and the one thing the new owners thought needed to be changed was the format of their most successful on-air show? That may not be racist but it sure as heck is mighty stupid. The Stews might not have been everyone’s cup of tea but neither is Howard Stern or Rush Limbaugh and those types of personalities are usually supported by management not sabotaged. Good for the Stews that they get a paid 3-month vacation (they earned it by being team players and doing what the geniuses at Lincoln asked) and I hope they land on the new sports talk station when all is said and done.

well well….if its not representing the same old school boring (wonder bread, vanilla) we dont want anything to do with it. People in Atlanta should be ashamed that a 2 hour show of diversity and fun was so offensive to the majority that they had to derail the stews by making them change thier format, they were setup to fail in the new regime. Just goes to show people in power in america are not willing to share power and posperity. But what I find funny is the way the other hosts degrade the character of black and latino sports heroes some warranted but most unnessesarily to lift up guys like Matt Ryan, Tom brady when without a Randy Moss they would probably not even be mentioned. good luck brothas

This decision was based only on color. The color green $$$$ that is. I loved the Stews. They were fresh, funny, and knowledgeable. After a while, the fresh started to get stale. The funny started to become jokes and antics that were bad taste. The knowledgeable became the absurd. I would almost stop my car after some of the dumb comments. Show prep went out the window. Apparently, I was not the only one to notice as the ratings fell and advertisers bailed. I wish them the best and hope they get a fresh start. I will certainly give their new show a listen.

There is more than one flavor and style for the #7 Radio market in the US. Stop with the Racist card. It isn’t racism… it is bias and economics. Lincoln doesn’t identify with our Urban perspective, and “He who owns Decides”. If you want to CONTINUE to get the owners to open their ears to the concerns of the audience… vote with the Dial Knob (button, switch, etc). If the Zone ratings further drop to the bottom and they do an objective YOY analysis they can see the impact of their decisions.

Sorry Nick, Chris, Mike B & Archer… you are collateral damage. I’ll have to wait to see what 92.9 turns out to be (680 is HORRRRRRRIIIBBBLLLLEEE!)

Every time I tuned into the Two Live Stews, they were analyzing every story through a racial prism. Nick Fairley? UGA fans didn’t like him because he is black. Matt Ryan has been accepted by Falcons fans because he is white. The Hawks don’t draw well because the are too black, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Mike Vick? You can only imagine.

I don’t mind analyzing sports stories through the prism of race when it is warranted, by these guys seem incapable of thinking about anything else except race.

Steak, Domino and Cellini have good chemistry and hopefully they stay together. Bell/Archer is awesome and they hit a homerun there. Midday show needs work obviously but Hans is entertaining. Its a shame about the Stews but thier schtick did get old as I am a long long time listener. The show got way to urban if I must be honest. I understand Atlanta is a chocolate city but as a caucasian listener if I wanted urban all the time I would listen to V103… Im sure they will rebound and I will miss Ryan more than Doug If I am to be honest. Doug didnt seem too informed most of the time…

I enjoyed Ryan at first, Doug not so much. I agree heads may have gotten to big. For the ones that are saying racism a toward the Stews I think it was just the opposite if someone said something good about a white player they always had to say a black player was better (example the ate Vick up). Ryan would have been better off not to drag Doug with him. I hope all the shows get better, but be unbias about everything.
Can’t understand why anyone would say 790 did not want the stews in the first place, they were given prim time slots and lots of ad’s to build them up. Were will never know the real truth so please don’t bring racism please don’t go that way and please do not bring politics in this the country has already bene divided enough.

The Stews entertained listeners very well over the years. Obviously, they appealed to some listeners more than others. I think they lacked an adequate team around them to help the appeal to a broader audience. If you listen to ESPN Radio, you will notice that they intentionally try to appeal to a broader audience. Yes, when I say broad, I am speaking of race. The Stews will always have a core base of listeners that can relate to their background. However, if they really want to take the next step and surpass their past success, they have to find a way to appeal to much more than African-Americans. First thing they should do is hire someone who specializes in stuff like that. It will pay huge dividends later.

DANG!!! But the show went straight silly when the new station management started messing with what worked. It was a great show, and it was even better because they allowed their Urban style to shine through. That was attractive to the Atlanta market space where there are a high volume of educated sport fans, who happen to be “urban.” (NOTICE: Nowhere in that statement did that insinuate race, for those poised to jump on it.) URBAN is what Atlanta once was and now is floundering in that identity. The Stews offered a program that was hip and modern, and most of all up to date. Sure their show was not the typical sports talk show, but it was ENTERTAINING. I enjoyed it and listened to it like most urbanites and loved it. But all things come to an end and that normally signals that management changed and the things that worked aren’t going to work anymore with a leadership heading in the wrong direction.

Don’t play the race card here. It’s time. Doug and Ryan are gonna be fine. AIGHT, AIGHT, AIGHT!!

Yes, its about race but it has way more to do with business. For instance, I’m a white sports fan with fairly liberal views and I didn’t care for the Stews. They argued and shouted all the time. Thats just not entertaining to me. Maybe its a cultural difference. I don’t know but I think most white people found them annoying and many blacks loved them in the early days but not so much lately after they toned it down. Even then, I could only listen for maybe a minute before switching. That was a bad business decision that wound up alienatating the core audience but didn’t attract any new listeners.

Steak is annoying too. 790 might not last much longer anyway

Let’s face it, black, white, pink, yellow or purple, we all are sports fan and I don’t care about color unless they are team colors. These guys just did not bring a lot to the table. Sad day

September 14th, 2012
3:24 pm

Oh well, I guess people got what they wanted. What’s sad is between the two talk radio stations in town, you have (6 am – 7pm) 13 hours of programming on each day for a total of 26 possible hours. When the Stews had a three hour show, that amounted to approximately 11 percent of potential listening time per day. That’s all. Yet people claim that those three hours alienated listeners and only appealed to certain people. Sad thing is, there were 23 other potential listening hours to choose from. No matter what folks tell you diversity and differences aren’t bad. Will miss the Stews. Good luck fellas . . . keep your heads up

Sad to see them go. The first few years they were on the air was great great radio. Fun, and fast moving. Then I think the success went to their heads and they stopped doing reasearch and the show took a strange direction. It was pretty clear Doug stopped researching anything other than Lakers basketball and the show just got sloppy and did not have a clear vision. Once the new and very corporate 790 owners came in, it was just a mtter of time before their act was passed on. Wish them luck.

It is so obvious isn’t it? “The city too busy to hate”? First “Fro” disappears on 680 no “The 2 Live Stews” are off the air, leaving only the “Sports Kings” to add diversity to sports talk radio. It is a shame that radio is such a limited enviroment. Has the new ownership been to a Falcons game? Diversity at its best. All kinds of ethnicities cheering the team with an African American crowd as big as the Saints. 790 you will wish that the 2 livest BROTHERS on talk radio had stayed in about 6 months when you turn into a milk toast soft rock station! Shame on 790. Who else were promoting Big Brothers/Big Sisters, hosting tailgates and events for the fansand having big time atheletes doing promos for a second rate radio station? Even having Shaggy was cool back in the day. Remote broadcasts and bumpin’ old school hip hop? Doug is a fellow alumni and Ryan a true SC Low Country homeboy with a degree from GA Tech. Excellent family men and role models for an oppressed community. I will find them as will all of their fans! 790, you can stick a fork in it, YOU’RE DONE!

They have not gotten better at what they do in 11 years on that station. They would not do show prep, would not listen to advice on how to handle things on air. Technically (radio wise) they sound the exact same as they did when they started. Making the same mistakes, missing ques, reading stories off paper and mispronouncing player names. It’s exactly the same they’re just making more money now.

Listened to Doug and Ryan for years, but I admit, there were times when my listening habits did dwindle a bit ,,,,, Reason being: the target audience. Both Doug and Ryan are educated, well versed, hard working men. What I could not sit stil with for young was the “dumbing down” vocabulary and verbage used in attempt to reach that certain demographic (the ‘hood people). That i think was their ratings downfall with more than a few listeners.

But, they will rebound and I wish them well wherever they land.

Stews take the next 90 days to retool your show. every 70s black sitcom had a white dude on there for a reason. Just saying. They did you guys a favor by shutting you down right now. Haven’t listened in months. Great personalilites just no direction. Install some more info into the show and not so much “hanging with the homeboys at Dave and Buster’s type show.” you guys need a straight man to keep the show going. Big ups to Ryan and Doug! I live in Alabama, and I first hear the Stews several years on the drive back to Alabama from a Falcons game. I heard the promo for the 2 Live Stews and I was hooked! I listened to them online at work. I enjoyed the sports and entertainment vibe to the show. Being an HBCU grad, I appreciated the guests they would have on there to talk about HBCU football. They bring a unique brand that no one on 790 the Zone has. Their successful rise was ultimately their downfall on 790. No fault of their own. They did what professionals do and they should be commended for that. Hopefully they will still be on the Tom Joyner Morning Show to talk NFL each week.

I had been hearing the new “Red Zone” show and you knew they were being phased out. Today they weren’t on and I thought they were just off today. Interesting enough former UGA QB and falcon D.J. Schockly and another former Ga Tech player. I didn’t see the article until after I listened. Now I can say How ironic! No Stews, but they still wanted some brothers to fill the spot.

Its not the first time a business or media outlet builds a brand on African Americans, and then decides to go in the other direction…Good luck Doug and Ryan! The Stews will rise again….”and I’m gone….awright, awright, awright”

Look, I’m a 55 year old AA male and started listening to sport talk to get the inside skinny of what’s happening in the NFL and to a lesser degree the SEC, Braves and the NBA in that order. The Stews originally appealed to me because they were the only AA talk show host in the game and I was curious to see what that brought and how. Honestly, I saw from the “get go”, dudes were not doing their homework in most cases in particular Doug. In humble opinion they talked their way out of jobs. I hope with the 2nd chance they are sure to get that they’ll be better prepared and never under estimate “the golden rule.” If you don’t know what that is, ask somebody…

I tried several times to listen to the “stews” when 680 had a segment I wasn’t interested in and was never able to suffer through more than one commercial break. They are easily the most annoying clueless sports personalities I have heard and in that field that is saying a lot.

Anyone that can be honest about their popularity knows the “stews” knows these guys were talentless borderline bigots who pandered to atlanta’s large african american population in much the same way Tyler Perry does. There is nothing wrong with that if you ignore the fact no other racial group is alowed the same leeway to insult any race different than their own.

I never understood why anyone would listen to a sports show where sports was rarely discussed. I have to admit I was a bit surprised at how knowledgable the callers were who actually did talk about sports. There were some actual sports fans with interesting points but it wasn’t worth suffering through countless blatther about step shows and Q da’s and “when we wuz at tech blah blah blah”

As a black man under-employed in the created economic storm, 790thezone will not loose one fan of the African American decent because we are loyal something that they are not at 790 the zone.

We as a black community felt great man we had #7 leading the Falcons and a Black Sports Show we could all be proud to be apart of. Now that #7 been gone for a while and there are on a couple of spec’s of Black’s on the Braves there is no black presence of absolute power in Atlanta any longer they even got rid of the (Overpriced Black SG-JOE Johnson). No matter how JOE sucked in the playoff’s Matt Ryan is the same at playoff time or maybe even worse.

They give praise to the WHITE man in the South and slay any black man that is mediocre. To bad Mike Vick fought dogs maybe the playoff win in Green bay wouldn’t be over shadowed. So who’s left in the black power house of Atlanta “Josh Smith, Roddy White, Julio Jones”.

Spudd Webb _ There has been worse crimes than DOGG fighting.. It’s been people in the NFL that killed other people with drunk driving and worse offenses.

They took the chance to bring MIKE VICK out of the limelight. He was the most talented player in sports. They 1st attempted to change his game (success) so now he was trying to become a (passer) it’s always about race. Mike Vick if he wanted could have won a superbowl just taking off at will. This stuff always goes into lowest common denominator conversation. We crave simplicity. Here it is: when it comes to the theatre of the mind that radio is, people can tell when you are not prepared. Not being prepared hurts your product. The failure to do the homework end is what people heard and why they left what was once an entertaining and interesting product.

Worst yet, you can’t build an audience by pandering to certain demos. There’s just not enough of any one demo to be successful that way. The only thing that builds and audience and maintains it is quality information and entertainment. Everyone appreciates good information and entertaining insite. One without the other is destined to fail eventually.

Why was if for “White People” to get, It was for a black audience “GHETTO” HOOD the BRUH’s and SISTERS. You got all the shows we just wanted one BLACK show. You could not listen for 3-4 hours out of a day. Everything is white owned the only thing we got is not our’s “HIP HOP” or RAP…..Take everything..You white people still don’t get it. No matter how much you try to hold the black man down he still lives….I predict Matt Ryan will never get a playoff win. He will always be good by numbers. His O-line better than Vick’s was and his receivers are light years above Price and Jenkins…VICK WON A PLAYOFF GAME – MATT WONT – He embarrassed us in Arizona, Vs Greenbay in the Dome and to top it off he put us in the History books with 2pts in a Football playoff game. He will always have the Ghost of Mike Vick in his #ss. As for Joe Johnson we trade a player that constantly get’s us to the playoff’s with a subpar team..But Matt gets a new contract. I love the Falcons but I think that Arthur should have waited on Vick and showed true “JEW” forgiveness

Folks have nothing better to do. I liked the Stews. I like several of the other guys, but after this, I think I’m going to find another station to listen to for a while. For those that don’t like them, why doesn’t it stop at that? You have to find an article about them to rag on ‘em? Get a life and grow up.

There are other shows out there that aren’t my cup of tea. Guess what? I’m not about to wait on some post about that show to demean them. I suggest that those of you that don’t like the Stews find better ways to amuse yourselves than waiting for posts like this to tell the wolrd how much you hated them…it will be better for your own health and sanity in the long run.

Why do some idiots always pretend to be black and make racist comments in blogs. I guess it is to make people think that all blacks see things in race only. It is childish and stupid. A a black person we know every business decision isn’t race based. I guess people make these ignorant comments just to make white people believe that blacks are always complaining . I am so glad you guys got fired. I could not stand listening to the red zone anymore. You guys are cool. But those two white guys they had you paired with were driving me crazy. I’m glad I read the article. I did’t know what happened to your orginal show. I was listening one day and the show seemed watered down. You would say something then back down from your comment. I thought Ryan had said something crazy and got you guys in trouble. Thats why you had to dail it back. But this is a blessing. You will be on FM. And you can go back to sports entertainment. Leave those white guys to talking about the third string right tackle for Ole Mis (boring). Nobody cares about that.
I can’t wait til you’re back on the air. I would go to my car at lunch to listen. I couldn’t listen at my desk. You have me laughing too loud.

I really thought Ryan And Doug had something different. The problem was it never evolved. I’m a loyal listener to the format and my buddies and I have always known there are only 1 or 2 guys who work in this city. Opinions formed from gathering information matters. The Stews constantly got things wrong and worse than that they sounded like the angry racists they railed against. Probably in part because they weren’t prepared enough or didn’t care enough to do the work. Good run. I’ll keep listening to 790 because the station is smarter and more entertaining. I’m a Southerner who does NOT like Barnhart and Durham. To Pompous but not funny about it. Mayhem show is far and away the best even with Steak. Putting Chris and Nick on in middays or afternoons again would be the best move possible. And Chuck and Chernoff are are making the same mistake as the Stews. They went from good to silly to really close to unlistenable in the last yr. Egos and lack of work ethic will do them in too.

How is it that so many people keep commenting that they didn’t listen to the Stews, but they didn’t do any research or that the show didn’t evolve. I’ve been a listener since they were syndicated in ‘06 and the thing I love about them is the fact they didn’t sound like or have opinions of other hosts. Too many hosts sound like Stepford hosts. Giving the same lame opinions day after day. But the Stews didn’t evolve? Funny how that works!

I will really miss the Stews on the zone. I’ve bee an avid listener since the station was founded, and am fortunate to be able to listen daily. I feel bad for the Stews. They were originally very entertaining, but got very obnoxious once the Mike Vick story dominated the news.I’m convinced they made him the center piece oft heir show to further their careers. I don’t think its coincidental that they became regulars on ESPN and became syndicated during the Mike Vick drama. During that time frame, they also defended Barry Bonds and O J Simpson. They went from refreshing to hard to listen too seemingly overnight. Very sad,,,,,was on e listener who wanted them to exceed.I still wish then well…and will try to listen again.

Enjoyed them back when they had the woman doing the social stuff and they seemed to have their own show from start to finish.

However, last week I heard one of them make a comment about GA Tech losing to Clemson last year, which struck me as totally odd. I know one of them went to Tech, but when I heard them erroneously say that Clemson beat Tech last year it really hit home for me that these guys aren’t even doing basic research. Not sure which one it was, but nobody even corrected them. As a Clemson fan, I of course knew that Tech gave us our first loss last year and it was stunning to hear somebody on the radio not even know who won that game. Especially someone who went to Tech. Nobody even corrected the dude. C’mon!

In my opinion there is a market for all types of talk shows. I find it strange that Al Sharpton and Rush can have a show and the 2 Live Stews can’t. Their best ratings were when they stayed true to who they were. In my opinion once they started to change the show (after being asked to do so) who they really were didn’t come through on the airwaves. I would love to see them back on the radio and or tv because I feel that it should be up to us listeners and viewers to decide if we will support them. Having said that if they do get another show I hope they stay true to who they are because if Rome, Dan Patrick and Skip (who I watch) can be who they are I see no problem with the 2 Live Stews being who they are. In closing to me this is not about black and white it’s about a choice. Let them do them and let us make the choice because at the end of the day sports isn’t in BLACK OR WHITE! (PEACE)

The stews are and were the bomb. These guys started a different way to talk about sports without kissing up to anyone. They brought a different vibe that some are jealous of. Most of the talk guys have never played sports and can only talk from stats or info researched by others. These guys had relationships with other players and playas. They could relate on and off the field which created some of the best inteviews for 790 the zone. Hopefullythey will get on a station that you an pick up in gwinnett after 3pm. I have always found these non-competes more like gentlemen’s agreements among radio companies. Unless they’re paying you while you’re off the air, I can’t see how truly enforceable they are in a court of law. I’ll have to ask an attorney about that. At least I would think if the Stews have a six-month noncompete, it should be in effect from the moment they are truly off the air, which was Sept. 12, 2012, which means they should be allowed back on the air March 12, 2013. Again, I’ll check since I am no legal expert.

Carpetbagger Steaky comes to the ATL with daddy’s money and gets a sports station. He loves sports and money. Gets the station and thus more gas to fuel the ego. The Strews come on board and now Steaky can claim not to be a racist and gets to make mo money off of the Strews. The Strews start failing, so Steaky pulls the fellow tribe member shot at the Falcon’s owner, and he gets the Falcons on his station. More money to keep him on the air to fuel the dimwit? For those of you predicting the demise of 790 you are sorely misinformed. The Two Live Racists have been the weakest link in the chain for years. There’s no viable competition in that time slot and they couldn’t compete. For those of us with the option of switching to Chris Russo on satellite we all did. Others went to the dribble on 680. If 92.9 chooses to employ these two I give them a year before they change formats again.

I never liked them. I thought they were a fad when they were on at night. I told Steak the same back in 2003 at a 790 The Zone remote broadcast. He admitted that there was some interest in having an A-A sports talk show, but of course, it really alienated a lot of other listeners.

The best show The Zone has ever had was “The Bottom Line” with Domino and Cellini back in the late 90s. It’s still the smartest and funniest show on Atlanta sports talk. “Chuck and Chernoff” is a distant second, but I listen to it now because I cannot listen to any 790 the Zone shows. I like Mike Bell, but I cannot listen to any other shows.

I couldn’t believe it when I was reading my dawgs comments on Twitter. I live here in Detroit & I regularly listen to Ryan & Doug on the internet. People are saying racism, people are saying good ridding to some guys that felt were full of them selves. At the end of the day what does this mean? Simply that Sports Talk radio have lost two of the most talented Sports Talk Radio Show host that not only had followers in the state of Georgia & the City of Atlanta. They had followers all over the entire country. The other thing that it means is that GOD has something better in store for them. I can’t wait to hear where they land. I have never met Doug or Ryan in person but; they consistently responded back to me on Facebook or Twitter when ever had a question or problem with something &, if I say so my self they have never lead me wrong. They weren’t just good at Sports Talk radio, they were good at just being good men to whom ever. Not seeing them on ESPN is a big void that can’t be field by anyone but; them. The truth they spoke it, the gospel they spoke it, the real they spoke it, they delusional they denounced it, the irrational they denounced it, the BS they denounced it. 2 Live Stews y’all gone always be my dawgs fam. All you folks that are glad they aren’t at 790 the zone why are you so upset at them being hired at the new station CBS radio already owns the old Dave FM 92.9. 1) If those of you that hate the fact CBS radio is hiring them knew the Atlanta radio stations that CBS already owns/operates it should not surprise you that they would be looking at hiring Doug and Ryan in the first place 2) Don’t hate you good old boys (from your point of view only) now have 2 radio stations really 2 a half if you count 1100 am just for you at least I believe that is your POV. 3) Doug and Ryan going to the new sports Dave FM 92.9, along with Jim Rome to CBS radio and Atlanta’s Score Atlanta will make them the most dominate sports station in the Georgia market one because it’s backed by CBS, two it will be the first Atlanta sports station that will be heard outside of 285 that is 24 hours a day up to north GA and down to middle GA. So again I am actually happy for the good old boys that feel such hate for The 2 Live Stews you get what you want. Just tell me in detail why can’t you be happy that these guys are going to a station where CBS radio wants to target a more deserve market?

Saw this coming a mile away. When the stews are told to “tone it down” that’s corporate slang for don’t be yourself but can give Mike Bell an additional hour while he still gets to keep his personality, call it what you want but there was a level of jealousy they had towards the stews. It’s funny how and I hate to say this but white people can be themselves and it’s ok but when black people do it, there’s a problem. Ryan and Doug thanks for doing it your way and God has a plan for both of you. Some people just cant stand to see blacks doing well. Sorry but true.

For all of the white haters making their loathsome comments against the Stews, like always, you just don’t get it. The “urban” sound and theme of the Stews are a reflection of their life experience. They are not racist. I have heard many times, Kincade of 680theFan referring derogatorily about those “All-Right, All-Right guys up the dial” and yet the Stews never reciprocated. Now, who is really the racist? White America, you have more than 99% of the country overwhelmed by the “white voice” in radio sports news. This voice spews all its biases and twists its bigoted commentaries as…laudatory comments for white players and begrudgingly extracting the same for blacks. These so-called “sports journalists” (an oxymoron if I ever saw one) heap criticisms and denunciation on black players, but sweep under the rug the same for whites. Yet the Stews are racist. The best retribution to all you Stew haters is that the Stews “Blow-up-tuate” (for the non-urban crowd, that means immensely rise up) even further in notoriety and prominence and of course financially.

Mainstream only wants cookie cutter programming, evident in the way music stations do their business and sports talk followed suit. Yes Doug could do more prep, and their opinions did not goose step along with the mainstreams opinion. But we deserve diversity. Why does everything have to be in accordance to the mainstream(aka white) America. There are people who love sports who process information differently and they(we) would like to hear our opinions echoed from time to time. Out of 12 hours of programming we can’t even get a quarter of that time to take a break from the same old pasty stale and unimaginative programming. Nice job 790. It is just funny to me how the new management at 790 made the Stews replace all the hip hop from their show with pop and country, but the rest of the “non urban” shows on the station seemed to add hip hop more and more to their intros and outros. I’m I the only one who noticed this?

For those with negative comments the positive comments on this page out weigh yours. These guys took their job seriously at 790. When they had events and hosted the AFC/NFC party there where people of all races and background who supported the Stews and who are loyal listeners. Yes the talked sports from a urban perspective, but who wants to listen to the same old people all the time. Beau took these guys under his wing and gave them a chance years ago and I know that 790 is losing a lot of listeners from all backgrounds since the Stews are no longer on. Lincon Finacial you have made a mistake and cant recognize talent just because these men dont fit into your standard view of what everyone else is doing. They did it different and their way which made them successful and they are on there way to moving to new heights and 790 will be begging them to come back
The Stews will Alway Perserver and See it through

The Stews were a fresh sound to sports talk…Breaking them down, they were former jocks with limited sports knowledge, but pretty good on air personality. Not sure how hard they really worked at their trade because outside of football, and the NBA, they were lost. I’m sure they saw this coming with the reduction of airtime, etc. They had a good run, and who wouldn’t want 3 months off paid! Wish them the best.
