Rihanna’s ‘Where Have You Been’ top Atlanta radio song

Rihanna-Where-Have-You-BeenIn a week where the Atlanta radio world went haywire, Rihanna was able to take over the top spot from Katy Perry’s two-week stint with “Where Have You Been?”

Rihanna has topped the Atlanta radio charts twice before since 2010 with “Rude Boy” and “What’s My Name?”

In this case, the addition of the new Power 96.1 helped her hit the top thanks to primary airplay on three stations: Q100 (79), Wild 105.7/96.7 (111) and Power (117). Star, V-103 and Hot each played the song once the past week, according to Mediabase 24/7. It was heard 310 times or nearly twice an hour over the course of the week.

mediabase247Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” received a boost as well, thanks to Power, and came in second. In fact, the top 111 songs in Atlanta radio were all pop songs heard on Power and Q100.

Clearly, Power 96.1 is gunning after Q100 because its playlist most matched that of Q100. Power’s playlist in its first week was tight but that’s typical for a new pop station. Power is skewing slightly younger than Q100 by not playing some more pop-oriented hits that Q100 is, including No Doubt’s “Settle Down,” Matchbox 20’s “She’s So Mean” and Train’s “50 Ways To Say Goodbye.”

So far, Power’s arrival has not caused Q100, B98.5 or Star 94 to change their playlists in any tangible way – yet. B98.5, in fact, has not changed a single song in its 250-song playlist since the prior program director Lee Cagle was let go and the new guy Chris Eagan arrived just a few days ago. Its playlist has been frozen for at least two weeks.

On the rock side, with Project 9-6-1 and 99X gone, Rock 100.5 has adjusted it playlist to play more current songs by acts such as the Black Keys and Shinedown. The average age of a song on the station a month ago was 27 years old. Now it’s 22 years old. On August 22, the station played four current songs. Yesterday, it played 22.

97.1/The River expanded its playlist from 420 unique songs played a week earlier to 550 songs this past week but the feel of the music is basically the same. Songs it played for the first time ever in its eight-year history the past few days reveal a small effort to play deeper tracks:

U2’s “Bad,” Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” Free’s “Mr. Big,” Heart’s “Bebe Le Strange,” Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” and “Living Loving Maid” 38 Specials “Back Where You Belong,” Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” and “Truckin” Bob Marley’s ‘Could You Be Loved” John Mellencamp’s “Play Guitar” Allman Brothers’ “Leave My Blues at Home,” Byrds “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better” and the Doors “Soft Parade.

The River, even before the recent changes, has begun playing more 1980s songs though the shift has been subtle. On Friday, 43% of the songs were 1980 or newer. On March 27 of this year, that percentage was 33 percent. Only 9 percent that day were from 1984 or newer. On Friday, that percentage edged up to 13 percent.

The average age of a song on the River in March was 35 years old. Now it’s 34 years old.

Does this mean she’s sold 5 or 6 copies of her song?
