Project 9-6-1 becomes Power 96.1, a top 40 station

power-961

[UPDATE: August 31, 2012: Cumulus is shifting its 98.9 signal to a Project-like sound starting at noon on Saturday, Sept. 1. It has been 99X at 98.9, an alternative rock station. The signal is relatively weak but at least it can fulfill the desires of active rock fans inside the Perimeter.]

With pop music having a powerful year, Clear Channel Atlanta has dropped active rock station Project 9-6-1 for a top 40 format it’s dubbing Power 96.1.

The change happened just after 7 p.m. The final song that Mediabase 24/7 reported as a Project song was at 7:02 p.m.: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” That’s when the station began playing a bunch of top 40 hits before making an official announcement at 8:05 p.m. and launching with LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” It promised 9,600 songs in a row, which equals about four weeks of commercial-free music.

Dunwoody High School graduate and media mogul Ryan Seacrest made a surprise appearance at the Jennifer Lopez concert Wednesday night at Philips Arena to make the announcement, noting that his mom will be able to hear him regularly again in Atlanta. (He started his career at Star 94 and has been on that station in syndication in recent years.)

Clear Channel nationwide has some seriously powerful top 40 stations, including Kiss in Los Angeles, where Seacrest airs his morning show and syndicated show, and Z100 in New York, where Wild 105.7 syndicated morning host Elvis Duran is based.

Starting Sept. 4, Power is bringing Duran from its existing rhythmic top 40 station at 105.7/96.7 called Wild, followed by Seacrest in syndication mid-days.

Now we know why Clear Channel got rid of its Wild program director a couple weeks ago. Wild is likely going to go away or shift its format so not to directly compete with Power. I hear Mami Chula, the key local personality on Wild, is staying put for now.

Could they bring a modified version of Project 9-6-1 on another signal? (Clear Channel owns 105.3 and 105.7, too.)

Program director Chris Williams, in a text this morning, said no. It’s over. On Facebook, someone posted this:

96.1 has been Atlanta’s rock destination since 1974. The Project Family is so proud to have carved out our own chapter in the rich legacy of WKLS. The radio dial will sound much different after today. We can never thank you enough for all your support and passion for Project 9-6-1 over the past 6 years and for 96rock the years before us. We consider ourselves among the luckiest each and every day we were allowed to enter this studio and create a radio station that made us proud. Thank you for inviting The Project into your cars, jobs and homes. Thank you for Living Loud and Playing Hard, please don’t stop. Most of all, thank you for being Part of the Project!

Project had a good run. It came to be courtesy of Williams, who first launched Buzz 105.3,a younger-leaning rock station. In late 2006, long-standing classic rock station 96rock became Project, an odd name that suggested an ephemeral existence. But Williams brought the spirit of the Buzz over to Project, which lasted more than five years, becoming a formidable player among younger listeners who liked the mix of older and current harder-edged rock by acts such as Guns ‘N Roses, Metallica, Slipknot and Five Finger Death Punch. It regularly finished in the top 5 among 18 to 34 year olds.

Some local radio folks who know Williams think he is pulling a deliberate “New Coke” move here. There will be such an uprising by Project fans via social media that Clear Channel will be “forced” to bring Project back on a different signal. If that’s the case, Project fans, get the petitions out! Here’s one page already out there. As of Labor Day, there are 3,600 names. Another one has more than 5,000 names. And a petition also has more than 5,000 names.

In the evening, it had a cool Jelli “Remote Control Radio” concept, where viewers could vote for what song to play next. And Aly was a stalwart presence in mid days. Project had trouble finding a solid morning show in its early years, Kidd Chris was starting to make inroads among younger men listeners after debuting last year.

Lately, top 40 and similar formats have been on a roll locally and nationwide. Q100 and Star 94 are both experiencing strong ratings. So was Wild. And B98.5 has freshened its sound to be closer to the other stations. All four are doing well.

Rock on the other hand has been in a death spiral nationwide. Atlanta has managed to air five rock stations, which combined, were barely pulling in an audience bigger than R&B/hip hop V-103. But Dave FM last month announced it was going sports talk this fall.

The gallery image on Project's Facebook page

And now Project is gone, leaving Rock 100.5, 97.1/The River and 99X at 98.9.

Project’s departure could really benefit all three of those remaining stations, especially Rock 100.5, which has underperformed when the Regular Guys were not on. And even the Regular Guys’ numbers have dropped off the past two years. There is limited up side for 99X given its weak signal but Dave’s departure could help it. And the River will likely pick up listeners from both Project and Dave.

The last time the name Power was used in Atlanta was Power 99 in the late 1980s and early 1990s, also a top 40 station. It became alternative rock station 99X October 26, 1992.

So far, Power 96.1 sounds very much like Wild 105.7/96.7, which was edging more towards straight top 40 in recent months after focusing more on hip hop in its earlier days. (Earlier days being late 2010 and 2011.)

TV and billboard ads are scheduled to start next month promoting Power.

UPDATE Thursday, August 30, 8:26 a.m.: This morning, Wild is now playing more hip hop though it’s not quite Hot 107.9. No more Carly Rae Jepsen and Gotye. Will Clear Channel keep Wild? Hard to say.

A sampling of 10 songs new Power 96.1 from 9:30 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Britney Spears “Til the World Ends”

Clear Channel Worldwide has done it again.

They took a good radio station (96 Rock), ran it into the ground, then abandoned it’s long-time format.

Atlanta now has more of what it does not need; more pop music. And that is only so due to Clear Channel’s continued mismanagement of broadcast radio across the nation.

I understand everyones frustration with the whole situation but Clear Channel is not letting the format go. They’ve registered website names in place of where Project may end up. It looks like as of now its going to go to Project 105.3 from different website speculation or Wild could just go defunct and move down the dial and Project would get 105.7 and 96.7 you just dont know but dont count clear channel out just yet… They still suck but they not going to get rid of the format like that YET!

This is what happens when local radio is primarily owned by 2 huge conglomerates. And it’s why people broadcast radio had long been losing listeners to satellite radio, internet radio and people’s own playlists.

This is very frustrating. As a middle aged man who enjoys many genres of music, the rock options are going away and leaving us with mindless pop drivel. This is an opportunity for 100.5 to step up and be the flagship station. First, realize that the River owns classic rock, let them! Sprinkle classic rock into a more modern format. Realize that modern rock goes beyond the latest Red Hot Chili Peppers single. Second, drop the braves. We love the braves, but that is what AM radio is for. Third, allow TRG to get edgier again. Five days a week of “Hollywood Squares and Mic’d up” is a little boring. Fourth, Give Rude an afternoon show and let him program it!

From a business perspective, the move makes sense. Demographic changes in Atlanta mean the CHR/Churban piece of the pie is bigger – even split three ways – than the rock pie split two ways.
With the stronger signal, look for Power to be locked in a brutal three-way battle with Star & Q for a while as each tweaks their playlist to maximize audience. My bet is that Star ends up shifting lighter & lighter, eventually ending up with the old CHR audience (and maybe even stealing a few listeners from B98 eventually).

From a listening perspective, it’s a tragic day. Project was never what 96 Rock was, but at least it was somewhere in the ballpark. I’ll shed no tears over the demise of the double-digit IQ morning show but Aly, O.C. and Jordan were all good in their roles and generally likable personalities. I wish them well in their future endeavors, and will miss them.

And a special note about the demise of the Project Cinco Party. A couple of the most enjoyable concerts I’ve attended, which is saying something at the ripe old age of 45.

@Pamela Carter — sadly, for actual new ROCK, there’s really nothing left here. Maybe 1 decent song out of 20 on 99X but that’s about it.

The most obvious thing would be for 100.5 to at least start playing the fairly large amount of new music out there by artists they already play — Aerosmith, Kiss, Motley Crue, Soundgarden, ZZ Top all have new current hits that get very little if any airplay in Atlanta — and if they were REALLY smart they’d try to add music that was very compatible with their core sound (much like what 96 Rock did toward the end of their run).

But for today’s actual hard rock acts — Five Finger Death Punch, Volbeat, Adelita’s Way, Seether, Halestorm, etc, etc — there’s nothing out there & really no existing station that it would make sense for. After all, we’ve just watched the demise of the only station playing them & it had nearly 40 years of heritage behind it and a strong signal behind it. If they couldn’t make it work then I’m not sure anyone would be crazy enough to try again for a long time.

I remember being able to find this listing in the AJC (yes, I’m getting old), but even a web search found listings that were at least 2 yrs out of date (for instance, 95.5 The Beat shows).

While I do NOT like this at all, l can totally see why they are trying to put a money making station on the biggest signal, it is all about the $$$$ not what the former listeners really want. I for one like to laugh in the morning on the way to my crappy 8 hours, we don’t get to listen to the radio at work and it makes the day very long and boring. Kidd Chris and the crew were FUNNY and I really like Ally, OC and Jordin. I hope they find a great place to be heard. I was a bit over the 5 finger death punch every hour on 961 and the “canned” weekend shows. I think Clear Channel needs to put 961’s format on a smaller signal to keep some of the former listeners who can get the signal happy. There was no need to just flush the whole format. I really do not like the Elvis Duran show at all, or any other syndicated morning show. I want a real personality that I can call, not some random intern picking up the phone when they have a contest. I really wish Dave would reconfigure and not go to sports since this has happened, we do NOT need another talk station whether it is sports or dog walking/ scrapbooking tips Come on CBS sieze this opportunity PLEEEEEAASSSEEEE.

When I got in my car this morning I also thought the Kidd Chris Show was pulling a prank, then a second song started…. I guess all my listening time will be going to my CDs and MP3 player now with some 97.1. 96.1 and 99.7 are the only radio stations that I could pick up at work with my MP3 player.
The Regular Guys morning show is really boring and 100.5 just talks about Braves games in the afternoon. If I wanted sports updates I listen to AM radio…. Now we don’t have any stations that will play harder rock (FFDP, Disturbed, Chevelle, Halestorm, etc.). And the Project Cinco parties…. No more $9.61 rock concert tickets….

Ummm…….. Gay. We already have STAR 94 and 98.5 that play that stupid stuff already. Why do we need another station that does? And why the hell take away real music, like Project 961???? I guess no more Alice in Chains, or Five Finger, or Pantera, or Beastie Boys. Now it’s just gay hip hop!!!!!!!!!!

It’s real easy people. Make change with your money. Don’t listen to the new station, turn to the River. Patronize their advertisers; send e-mails on how you enjoy the format. That station will grow and grow, and then clear channel will see what idiots they are. And for the River, mix it up. Don’t play the same songs hour after hour. Actually let a human control the music versus a computer. You have a great chance here to really capitalize on this and garner some rock fans for life.

It was very depressing getting into my car for work this morning and hearing pop on my Programmed Station #1. I can’t believe they dropped the only current rock hits stations for yet another pop/top-40 station. I never got into Kidd Chris’ show, but Ally was great and Remote Controlled Radio was awesome. Now I literally have 0 radio stations in Duluth that I want to listen to regularly. I guess it’s time to get a Bluetooth system in my car and just use Pandora from my phone.

I live too far out of Atlanta to get 99x or Rock 100.5, so my best option now is light rock? FM Radio executives complain about MP3s and Sirius radio reducing the listeners, but since the options are so limited/awful, the execs have no one to blame but themselves for reduced FM radio listeners. I guess I will be going by Best Buy ASAP to look into some MP3 device for my car.

August 30th, 2012
8:41 am

I used to listen to the radio in the car occasionally. It was faster to hop in the car and pick a station than it was to unlock my phone, plug it in, choose a station, then listen. No longer. The extra few steps and the nominal fee I pay for Pandora and Spotify is totally worth it. Zero commercials and variety trumps 20 minutes of commercials an hour and the same 30 songs played across every station on the dial.

What’s more is now I plan to urge my kids to listen this way too…hopefully I can keep Clear Channel’s talons out of them.

Atlanta’s music scene and radio stations are wholly pathetic. With Kidd Chris and crew gone we have lost the only hosts willing to truthfully speak their minds on any topic and who would not bow down to the hegemonic religious right. I think Clearchannel’s decision can better be attributed to a fear of the “stick-up-its-ass” mafia that goes after free speech with a puritanical rage. Atlanta- you are a backward-ass backwater- living in fear of anything and everything, toting guns, praying and eating your Branch Davidian Chick fil a.

Why doesn’t Atlanta have a separate public radio station that plays alternative like, say The Current out of Minneapolis? Numbers don’t lie: rock music is clearly becoming a more niche genre, so ratings driven for-profit entities cannot be counted on to deliver new good rock music. I really wish WABE could acquire another number “left of the dial” and play alternative music 24/7. I’m fine with them having a classical station but we also now need a station that won’t disappear which serves rock fans who want to hear rock music that has been made more recently than 1985. As it is, I think, Rodney, you should be reporting on how this affects artists. How are new artists like the Lumineers going to break through when all avenues for exposure are disappearing? This is not just an Atlanta problem — similar trends are happening in other big cities like Chicago.

I could care less if Atlanta radio went away all together. I have my mp3 player. It’s loaded with literally everything from Abba to ZZ Top. One moment it’ll play Pink Floyd’s “Money”; the next it’ll play “We’re In The Money” from the soundtrack for “42nd Street”. After that it might play Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony”, and then after that, perhaps “Lucky Man” by Emerson, Lake & Palmer or something by Led Zeppelin.

It’s worth waiting a few minutes for my media player (does video, has Android, can surf Internet, also has GPS) to fully scan all media (music is on micro-SD card), but once it’s done, I plug it into the FM modulator in my car, turn on the radio, tune to 88.3, and go.

All I can say is WTF? So Atlanta, a top 10 market, has how many Top 40 stations? How many Country, how many talk stations? How Many R&B? Now we are down to Rock 100.5 and The River for Rock? Seriously? And the majority of their playlist is Classic. PPM can’t be that wrong, or can they? Rock as a format is not dead, but the media companies are pushing it that way. Where are true Rock listeners going to get their new music?

c-bear is right about the midwest. I’m from the Cincinnati area and they have WEBN, a true “AOR” station which has been around since 1967, and more or less, has kept the same format for all of those 45 years. They have won “Rock Station of the Year” numerous times. Plus they pick up the stations out of Dayton. That sure beats the h**l out of the crap that I’ve heard in this “top 10″ market in the last 22 years I’ve been in this market. That should tell you something. Look at Atlanta’s demographics and no, we are not all 20-50 year old females that listen to the same 10 songs over and over. I’m hoping that someone is going to take their head out of their a*s and put up a true “AOR” station. As much as I cannot stand the “go to satellite” response everyone throws out here all the time, the stations’ management is forcing people to. I will never go that route because I refuse to pay for radio. Once Dave switches, there is not going anything but classic rock, which is a dying format. Sure there is a need for that, but not 2 stations. Someone is going to get a clue, bring back AOR and make a killing. Don’t focus on the alt-rock or even just the current single. There is so much more good music than what is played on the radio from a CD. Broaden the spectrum and open some ears to more than what they normally here. Royalties would still be the same, if not better.
Atlanta is going to end up being known for Top 40, Country and Talk. That’s it. Do you think any current bands will stop in Atlanta if no station is playing their music?

Wake up Cumulus, CBS, and Clear Channel. You are destroying a Top Ten market. It won’t be in the Top much longer.

If I had the money and resources, I would start a station myself and program it the way it should be.

@”Calling It…” — You seem to understand the business better than the average bear, so you know that this is just Atlanta trying to be like nearly all of the other top 10 markets. Very large markets that have a rock station playing currents at all, much less one “making a killing” are few & far between.

While I’m commenting anyway, might as well note CC-Atlanta getting a new market manager yesterday … former Kicks/Eagle sales guy Matt Scarano. He’ll get to preside over the steaming pile that is CC-Atlanta.http://www.radioworld.com/article/scarano-takes-over-cc-atlanta/215182

This has to be a joke! Radio in Atlanta has sucked for years and now it only gets worse. Power 99 sucked and became 99X. 99X eventually sucked and went underground. The Buzz surfaces from the underground and was absolutely awesome. Clear Channel then takes The Buzz mainstream and you see where we are now. Clear Channel obviously has a thing against rock/metal. Thanks a lot, jerks!

As for morning shows, there is nothing anyone can say to convince me that there is a single show better than Neal Boortz (Herman Cain come January). Since he doesn’t air until 8:30, I will listen to real world news, traffic or nothing at all before I tune in to any other show. One exception…Lex & Terry. But again, thanks to all the Atlanta stations for not wanting to carry quality programming.

This is a very biased move, and I am extremely disappointed. This was one of the worst decisions I feel that radio has made in a long time. Why not add a Jersey Shore power-hour? haven’t listed on fm dial in about 7 years since getting satellite radio. Problem with fm radio is that it is a business like any other that is out to make money. with all the other ways of listening to music through other mediums, i.e. smartphone, computers etc, you will find your station out there. Top 40 isn’t what it used to be anyway, it all sounds the same now where as 30 + years ago was much different. Just a sign of the times, things are changing but count me out.

Well, time to give up FM radio. More of the same boring crap that I could find on 3 other stations that I didn’t really care about now on 96.1. I like a VARIETY of music. Pop stuff all sounds the same and Wild plays the same stuff over and over and over. It’s so boring. With Project 96.1 and Dave FM going by the wayside, there’s no reason to listen anymore. I like 99X but the signal is horrible. The River is good for classic rock and 100.5 is okay but they don’t have a clear direction for songs and will probably be gone soon enough like the rest. Atlanta really is the worst for music on the radio. Pretty sad for a town this large that there is little diversity in music.

This is BS. I can’t believe they ditched the Project for this crap. If we wanted to hear this kind of music we’d turn it to Q100 or 105.7 or V103 or Star94.  Driving my point home – we already have several stations that play the same genre of music.  Atlanta doesn’t need yet another.  The drive to work was so depressing.  No more Under the Covers with Aly?!  UGH!  She definitely made my work day suck less.  I really hope those f*&k$ at Clear bring the Project back with the same jocks and format.  That DB Ryan can $uck it. Reminds me of Power 99 back in the day, when it played all Top 40 pop from the 80s. Admittedly, that was a better station (so was the music in the 80s though). Bottom line, Atlanta radio continues the long trend of being uninspired, corporate, and chasing the bottom of the bottom. The only stations in town getting it slightly correct are Ga State U’s, NPR (of course), and 103.7 Chuck (which can do a helluva lot better if it’s willing to dig deeper than the Top 40 from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s).

basically this means that men don’t spend as much as women. the music is just there to hook the target market the advertisers are looking for — women. women 30 and under make more money, on average, than their male counterparts in all but three of the largest cities in the U.S. 23% of women currently outearn their husbands.

hence the chick stations….

What Data?

August 30th, 2012
10:28 am

I want to know where the data comes from that supports these formats! Over at the project’s old facebook site, over 20,000 people are ‘talking about this,’ whatever that means. If that many people are hitting the old site to see what happened, that must mean that the data is skewed somewhere. Adding a pop format to this town is like buying milk with an earlier expiration date than what you already had in the fridge. I think they had a solid niche market, and now we’re back to the Atlanta radio of the late 90’s where hard rock fans had to flip the channel between a couple of stations hoping to hear something worth upping the volume.

Clear Channel has killed radio. Atlanta needs a great rock station. I listened to Project 9-6-1 although I got tired of them playing some songs to death. At least we had them! Now what are we supposed to do? I sure won’t bow to some corporate suit’s will and listen to pop crap so he can earn a few more dollars. Until we get something to fill the void of rock/metal (Wreckage, anyone?), I will rely solely on my CDs. Thanks, Clear Channel. You suck and I hope you eventually go bankrupt!

Apparently Clear Channel thinks that Atlanta market is all 14 year old girls. No longer are we supposed to listen to music that the artist can actually play with an instrument and sing live without a play track and lip-synching.
I love it when management from another city makes a decision based on numbers alone.

I have satellite radio, but rarely even listen to that anymore. Mostly I listen to a thumb drive loaded with mp3 albums that plugs into my car stereo, iPod through my car stereo, or Pandora from my phone to my car stereo. To many choice for good music to put up with crappy music, chattering DJs and tons of commercials- although Pandora has a few commercials.

But man, what a sad end to 96.1. WKLS 96 Rock was an Atlanta institution for so long. Can’t anybody do this right?

There has never been a time where Project was committed to finding and playing new rock music. New rock songs are released everyday, but instead of playing them, they play oldies music like 104.1. I hate pop music, but pop stations stay up to date on their music. Rock stations are all this way, and that’s why they are all failing. They earned this, so screw them. I switched to my iPod years ago when I realized they weren’t going to change.

It is a sad day for music in Atlanta!! We were being bombarded with pop trash anyway; why did Clear Channel decide that the ONLY rock station in town had to go?!! (Sorry, 100.5, but you dropped the ball a long time ago.) Ryan Seacrest needs to be kept in check! Why is some guy from Dunwoody a celebrity anyway? What the hell has he ever done that was worth watching? I hope the Project Fans continue to protest the horrible treatment of the employees and the assumption on Clear Channel’s part that we, the listeners of Atlanta, will listen to whatever juvenile Top-40 junk they throw at us. I, for one, will give 100.5 a chance, but if they don’t take advantage of the opportunity soon I, along with most of the rock and roll fans in the city, will turn to satellite radio, and then the rock scene in Atlanta will be truly dead….One more thought–will any real rock acts play in Atlanta if they can’t get air time? By next year, I bet we won’t be able to get the headline acts that we barely get now! Bring back Project 96.1!!!!

@Behind – In L.A(#2) – KROQ, which lists itself as alternative, but it is one of the first stations you think of when you think of the L.A., market. Let’s see what happens when the fall numbers come out and see if Atlanta holds on to #9. As cyclical and and as quick as things change, it’s only going to be a matter of time before Atlanta has a decent station again. It won’t be Z-93. It won’t be 96 Rock. Those days are gone and most of those jocks have moved on. Rock genre is very cloudy right now, with no distinct lines between Alternative and Rock. A new station needs to come on line with a good signal and start from the ground up and either re-create the true “Rock” genre or completely refine it to set the standard.

The “Translator” stations are not the answer either. They just plain don’t have the signal strength. Sure 99x is back on the air, but it’s almost irrelevant in today’s spectrum.

@Calling It … umm, you do realize that market ranks are based solely on population, right? @Behind….yes I do. But my point was that if you look at the larger markets…wait…this thread is taking me away from work….and I don’t remember what the point is…point being that despite being #9, there are larger markets where rock is a viable format. From a business standpoint, the population would affect the formats based on PPM, if used. And what CC is doing is opening a big hole for another competitor to swoop in and dominate and fill the void. And I think everyone is in agreement, 2 stations that rock-oriented leave creates a HUGE void. I just hope someone with a brain comes in and does it right.

Ryan Seacrest can take his mommy and move her ass somewhere else where she can listen to him syndicated on some other radio station. This is his home town and he couldn’t get a station to put him on? I’m guessing that the Atlanta radio stations and their parent companies don’t get it.

94.9 used to be good when it was Peach and Lite FM… Clear Channel ruined that frequency with country music station The Bull.

96.1 used to be good when it was 96-Rock… then it got changed to Project-9-6-1… and Clear Channel ruins another frequency with Top 40 station Power 96.1. Either bring back 96-Rock, or bring back Peach. I’m guessing Clear Channel can also be called Cheap Channel.

CBS has ruined 92.9, which used to be good as Z-93 and Dave FM, in order to accomodate Sports Talk.

97.1 used to be good as Fox-97, before the short-lived 97.1 Jamz… and Cox gave us 97.1 The River, which is good… even though its not Fox.

106.7 used to be good as country music stations Y and Eagle… and was good as True Oldies… and the All-News took over.

98.5 used to be good… and it seems that the former soft rock station is on its way toward becoming another Star-94, Q-100, and Power 96.1. I don’t think 98 is airing Delilah anymore. 9 plays the same Chris Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, and Matchbox 20 songs to death, among others. I can see why Kelly McCoy got out when he did.

While Project 961 wasn’t always the best station (couldn’t stand the morning crew) and constantly played RHCP, I too am a fan of Aly, the OC, and Jordan. I can’t stand this top 40 crap, and that’s mostly because of the constant repetition and the fact that even if you change the station there’s a high probability the same song is playing on the other station.

Without these stations announcing when concerts are and hosting them I won’t know. I had a great time at this year’s Project Cinco Party. We need more rock stations; I can’t get a great signal from 99x here at the house like I could 96.1.

In a month’s time Atlanta has lost its only two rock stations that have an audible signal outside the perimeter. As if we needed another top 40 station and another sports talk station (soon to be 92.9FM). 100.5 is classic rock and 97.1 is even more classic so that leaves exactly zero rock stations with a signal. Finally time to get a price on SiriusXM.

Where in ATL,shawty( LMAO) can you hear Korn, Slipknot, Metallica, Seether, Stained…etc. Come on….Too many teeny bobber, wanna be rap, pop kiddie stations on the radio already. Clear channel… Ya’ll sent me to Vegas back in the day (96 Rock..remember)…… I appreciated it.. But i don’t appreciate this. Enjoy your fan base. You had other stations that you could have created. instead of taking the BEST rock in Atlanta. Hope this comes back on you….RIP PROJECT 96.1!!!!!!!

I’ve been a member of the project family for two years. I’m so bummed and mad that I turned my radio on this morning and heard the same songs that are on 5 other stations!!!!!! Are you kidding me? What a crock! Where do I tune in to hear Shinedown, Five Finger, Guns-N-Roses,Volbeat, Sick Puppies, Stone Sour… and oh so many more? Oh another station with a weak signal?…. thanks. I don’t have a smart phone, so I can’t get the I Heart Radio app. Project was the only place I could hear the best music. Seriously disappointed and let down.

I am Beyond Pissed. Clear Channel .. you Suck! Your ownership of 96 rock has been a disaster from the get-go. AS a lifelong Atlanta rock fan , I have had to listen to the slow death spiral of the once ass- kicking 96 ROCK of old. 96.1 used to own all rockers attention and had the absolute best promotions and band info. Since your ownership we had to witness your letting go of Chris Rude, the censorship of The original Reg. Guys and then your progressive take on playing “new rock” in a constant 20 song rotation with no true DJ influence. Still, I was willing to keep tuning to 96.1, just to keep hearing the best, bang your head ROCK. Atlanta now only has weak choices for the rock genre and we as rock fans can only hope someone with brains can hear our cries. Your station number has been erased from my car, my once proud license plate will be retired and I’ll end my sadness with a WHO reference; In 1974 , Babba ORiely (teenage wasteland) cracked the airways as your first song, I can only hope the anthem of ” Long Live Rock” sees your top 40 format and your jobs are like Kansas’s “Dust in the Wind” and quickly go away like Ryan Seacrest fame. SAD ,SAD day for rock and roll in Atlanta.

Nick Kittle

Make sure you spell my name right seacrest. You are so typical of the bland social media that surrounds the genre of pop. Spoiled. Ignorant. Self absorbed. Did i mention ignorant? Clear Channel and seacrest’s mom have a rude awakening coming. Saturday all hell will break loose in downtown.

Time to move.

Project 9-6-1 was the “only” station that played the more current Rock music which in my opinion has been on an upswing for a better quality of music. Seriously, how can you get better than the likes of Disturbed, Mudvayne, Nonpoint, Hellyeah, Five Finger Death Punch, Theory of Deadman, Tool, Bush Seether, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Avenge Sevenfold, Shinedown, and let’s not forget Rage; just to name a few.

Aaron

There is really no other hard-rock station in Atlanta (others are soft rock, mix, etc.). Whenever I’m feeling down I can turn this channel on and turn my day around, or turn it on when I’m happy to celebrate. This channel even offers the ability for the audience to be the DJ!! I have never heard of another station to offer this level of freedom. I can’t believe they shut down such a successful station, and if you disagree that it was successful then here we are to prove otherwise. Look at the thousands of people showing up at concerts advertized through this station. Know that the fans who stand up and sign this and other letters is only a fraction of the real horde. I suspect this channel was removed because of people in power who had negative and stereotypical opinions of the station. If so, who are they to take away the sanctuary of hundreds of thousands of people!! (I do mean that number too). You are messing with the wrong people. The hard-rock station is the best place to get angry people, unfortunatly for the record…and you. If anyone thinks that this is a place where people get angry or …I hate to say it…demon worshipers, then they are wrong [mostly]. Actually country music has more of those people. There are more depressed and suicides that regularly listen to country music than rock music. Demon worshippers, and I mean the real ones, are no more likely to listen to this station than your average youth. I know specific people than can attest to this. Oh, and many, if not most listeners are Christian.
Please do NOT bring ANOTHER station. I have listened to other rock stations regularly, and it’s just a place to get music. Poject9-6-1 is much more than that. We all feel connected and apart of P961. There’s a reason it is called “the Project Family”. We comfort each other through tough times, share experiences, likes and dislikes, and we will stand as a family to protect one of our own. And the Project is absolutely one of our own. If Project 9-6-1 goes away, the family is lost in the wilderness, and it is the first priority to get back together before we move on.
Please get the Project back on 96.1 too!! Do you have any idea how hard it would be to change the channel on it? That sounds like a lot of money. It will be far easier to move the new channel. Besides, don’t we already have enoughmany pop stations?
Who’s dumb*** idea was this anyway? (actually I know, just the way I phrased the sentence shows by tone.)

I will talk to my friends about this. Tomorrow I will bring in at least 50 people, and they will bring more. For a station that has over 100,000 likes on facebook, I wouldn’t be suprised if we had that many sign that petition.

Thank you for reading my responce.

People in Athens who like rock music are getting screwed worst of all. From my house, I can hear five different Top 40 stations: Star 94, Q100, Power 100.1 (Athens station), Wild 105.7, and now this Power 96.1. On the other hand, I cannot hear a single station that plays current rock music anymore, and none of the solutions will help me either. Rock 100.5 can’t be heard past Winder, and 99X can’t even make it past Lawrenceville. And the 105.3 transmitter is located near Newnan, which leaves Athens out in the cold even with a 100,000-watt transmitter. I’ve begun streaming 98.9 The Rock in Kansas City for my hard rock fix.

So if you’re a female between the ages of 15 and 34, congratulations: you own terrestrial radio. No other demographic even matters, which is why I now have five radio stations playing contemporary pop music, and zero stations playing contemporary rock music.

Your crazy antics in the morning I looked forward to. It made my day to start off my morning with project 961. Honestly I thought my radio was going bad when i couldnt find my guys to listen to. It’s sad because Atlanta dropped a hip hop station last year in place of talk radio yes 95.5 the beat, guess what it’s back on 96.1. ouldn’t Ryan Seacrest buuy his own radio station in Atlanta so his mom could hear him again oh wait here’s an idea get her xm , call her, write , email let her liten online…….. dang dude you suck. The only good rock station in this hole is gone now thank you clear channel. One of the only monopolies left aloud to opperate. From the 1920’s -1950’s america tried getting rid companies that would buy up all of that product say like the railroads. One person owned them so he could charge whatever he wanted, same is in this case Clear channel owns every freaking radio station in alanta so we have to listen to whatever they want us to or just listen to nothing. I drive for 1 hour both directions to and from work, My drive is alot quieter now, I work listening to the PRoject not anymore. http://WWW.KIDDCHRIS.COM. Clear channel; sucks we cannot boycot them because they don’t listen nor do they care.
The project had 111000 likes on Facebook….. really that says something. over 2000 people commented last nighton the new Power 961 FB cite, what’s funny is the owners of the cite deleted every hate message and when I checked it this morning all comments were gone, so I reposted Now the FB page is gone. NOONE WANTS YOU HERE YOU SUCK!!! USA USA USA USA USA KIDD CHRIS SHOW. This is still America so much for freedom of speech Hip hop crap sucks and there is enough of that junk here like others said star 94, Q100, 99.7.
CLEAR CHANNEL SUCKS I HATE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE WANT THE PROJECT LISTEN TO US.Every other rock station may be gettign bad ratings but I can say that the ratings for The Project were good and people talked about them. Was it the joke about Obama last week??? It was a joke Obama laugh at it, stiff willed Democrats laugh at it don’t get rid of the station because of it it was a joke get over it. lastly.

WHO THE F*** DO YOU PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE TAKING SOMETHING THE PEOPLE OF THE PROJECT FAMILY KNOW AND LOVE AWAY FROM US! Answer me this: ” When the F*** are you going to re-air Project 96.1 to it’s rightful place. No “power 961″ is going to keep the attention of hundreds to thousands of rock loving listeners, they’ll just turn off their radios! Liberty, I’m with you. SiriusXM has some great channels for rock… old and new, as well as Howard Stern.

The few times I listen to ATL radio, it’s usually Bert show in the morning (mindless chatter), and Mara Davis on Dave-FM mid-days.

this was more than a radio station. We all feel and felt a strong connection to to p961. There’s a reason it is called “the project familiy”. Actually it is part of Atlanta CULTURE. Atlanta has been stripped of part of its culture like if the appalacians lost it’s cultural banjo or fiddle.
Did “95.5 the Beat” go down because of Clear Channel too? I didn’t care much about it but if Clear is going to ruin one channel after another than they need to be stopped.

I myself travel through the southeast and this is a very sad but continues to happen city to city, town to town and we have no one to blame but our government for allowing Media Consolidation and making it nearly impossible for individuals to create their own radio broadcast stations and almost as hard to create online radio stations guaranteeing a monopoly shared by only a few corporations. Over the last few years music stations playing Gen X, Soft Rock, Jack Variety, Alternative, and Dance have fallen nationwide to cookie cutter Top 40, Hip Hop, Sports Talk or News Talk stations. The radio now sounds the same all across the south. These stations are cheaper to program and operate. Royalties to artists are not as expensive or nonexistent at all. 96.5-the Mountain in Chattanooga was my favorite playing a great mix of old and new rock, but about a year ago this station fell to “Hits 96” this same Top-40 that everyone is referring to. Dothan, Alabama is served by six Top-40 stations from local areas. It is Top-40, Country, Religious or Talk, no variety. Consolidation is going to kill the radio star. Just like in TV it is time to subscribe to Satellite Radio. Who really loses are the bands who want to get started and the listeners.

As much as everyone is complaining, you don’t realize that the petitions, hate mail, Facebook posts, etc. don’t mean squat to Clear Channel. They are a “media and entertainment” company whose job it is to buy up frequencies in markets and hire Program Directors to program the stations. The true management could care less about everyone’s hate mail. The fact that they have gotten you fired up…they have accomplished what they have set out to do. They think they can grab a piece of the pie, because they don’t have a Top 40 presence in Atlanta. And being one of the top station owners in the country, they have to take a shot at the hottest demographic. Unfortunately, for everyone else, they flip formats. Same thing Dave is doing. The listeners are the ones who lose out.

Being as big as they are, they can throw alot of money at promoting or building the brand of the station.

Instead of focusing on the negativity, everyone should focus on either Clear Channel or their competitors (CBS, Lincoln Financial Media, or Cumulus) into creating a strong signaled Rock Station. Create the petition to bring a Rock Station back to Atlanta, instead of bring Project back. The ideal scenario is to bring something new and build that station from the ground up. Don’t reference 96 Rock, Project, Dave, Z93, or any of the old brands. Create a new brand. As far as they are concerned, those old stations are just that…old. They are looking for something that will make them money and presenting them with the 1,000’s of signatures or likes (if it’s a Facebook page), they may be more apt to listen. We need something completely different that 100.5, River, and 99x. I can hear new taglines already “Atlanta’s New Home for Rock”, “Atlanta’s Real Rock Station”. Keep the format different from Rock 100.5, River, and 99x. There can be some overlap, but there needs to be some differentiation, otherwise you are creating a competitor.

Rock is in a cloudy state these days. The lines between Rock, Alternative, and Metal are blurred and need to be clarified. A Rock station needs to be that…Rock.

What a shame, I always enjoyed listening to 96.1 as driving in the Atlanta area. Unfortunately, Clear Channel has been doing this region-wide; I don’t think they like anything rock related. Pretty much all the Rock stations in south Georgia are gone (other than a couple classic rock stations and there is rock 103 in Columbus)

Kidd Chris was a little annoying a lot of the time, but he was at least better than those d-bags on Rock 100.5 in the mornings. I always listened to the Project in the afternoon’s though, even though I would prefer to listen to 99x. Just can’t get 99x unless your right next to the antenna I guess though. Seriously, get a new antenna.

This is crazy. So, for alternative music we only have one station – 99x – which is a great station but ever since they booted them off of 99.7 frequency, the signal is so weak you never know when you’ll be able to pick it up! And Dave FM is going to be sports talk???? …. great. I am going to have to do a lot of reprogramming of my presets. Yeah, it’s nice being able to hear the Falcons games on Sundays if I am not able to watch, but beyond that I do not want to hear a bunch of people dissecting sports 24/7/365. If I wanted that I would get ESPN radio. What the heck is going on with radio in Atlanta?!

I got a feeling the management group at CBS radio is scrambling to change their mind about this sports talk stuff, or kicking themselves for going that route now that the project is dead. This would have been a perfect oppourtunity for them to revamp their playlist and see a jump in their listenership. Luckily I live far enough northwest to pick up a good southern rock station out of Rome called “The Rebel” on 104.9!!!

Ok.. No one gang up on me.. I think the only “improvement” the Project needed was the absence of KiddChris. Or atleast someone to watch his “tantrums” and disparaging remarks about things happening around town.. or away for that matter. My family fell victim to some of his commentaries and jokes. We were going through a horrible time and this man jokes about it.. I was crushed. Being a member of the underground and an avid fan for YEARS (since the time when it was only nighttime album rock) I felt betrayed. I called the station to talk to the OC.. Chris Williams.. I got a voice mail.. I left the message, in tears, mind you.. and never heard back.. I wont comment on his jokes about what he has said about other tragic events.. HE NEEDED TO GO.. Now all of em are gone…

It is obvious the “idiots” at Clear Channel don’t care about these post or what we of the Atlanta area think. If they did they would did a “study” or performed a survey to see if this was a wise move, however, they didn’t. So it is obvious to me and a lot of other people that they don’t really care. Believe me, having dealt with people at CC myself through the company I work for in recent years, I can say “firsthand” that they are truly IDIOTS!!!

Even if they bring back the format to another station, dont they realize that 96.1 has been a rock station since 1974? Ever seen the movie Airheads? The people of clear channel remind me of that total a$$ clown in that movie. Clear channel cannot look past its corporate strategies to see what the people really want. TO NATHEN DEAL
I’m 44 and Moved here in 1986 after I graduated high school. I have raised a family in the state of Georgia and have five teenagers. Since I have lived here, Atlanta has always had a Rock station to listen too. 96 rock was first, and 99x then it changed to project 96.1 The Family. Clear Channel killed the radio station at 8:00pm Thursday 29th 2012.I listen to all types of music, however I prefer rock. Power 96 with Ryan Seacrest replaced it. MORE POP MUSIC, WOW….Stations we have are already Great.

Please consider bringing in a rock station to Atlanta of some sort,If anything gets passed by you or your staff.

For now I will steam music in Augusta and Columbus Georgia, and wait for the long time Atlanta Dj’s to do something with 99x on line. You had some of the best DJ’s in the business. You would make the community happy, easy feather in your cap . clear channel wasn’t considering city of Atlanta at all with this poor decision.

Okay 1) 80’s rock was not rock it was more metal, and they did play 80’s rock just not what you wanted to hear. It’s called call in and request or give them suggestions don’t just write them off. 2) this whole thing is a load of crap. I work everyday where popular music is all we can listen too because of profanity and what have you. If I have to hear Carly Jepson’s “Call me Maybe” on one more station I just might kill myself. This power 96.1 is plastic and fake as can be and I can’t stand it. 3) Your only options are opera, hip-hop, country or pop. I can only take so much of that before I freak out because it just all so generic and repetitive. You know who likes repetition? Infants and small children. We aren’t children we need something less formula based then pop music.

As to the post, I know not of what you speak. Radio is WABE, recently 106.7 (though I don’t like the happy talk between what appears to be the obligatory male and female news readers or the Hollywood/trendy news) and a bit of 680 (having been replaced by 106.7 for the most part).

This is just another cost cutting measure by the heads of Clear Channel. Being $billions in debt, Clear Channel cuts where ever they can. It’s cheaper bringing in a syndicated show such as Ryan Seacrest rather then hiring local talent.

My listeners increasingly state that they are so tired of the dull-programming of Clear Channel and other big conglomerates. This is why our audience is constantly growing…people want to discover new music, new bands as well as enjoy the best of the major labels stuff – but not a steady diet of any one thing…..variety. Our answer has been to syndicate online shows dedicated to the best independent rock from soft to hard…and let the listeners decide what they like and want more of.

I remember the old power 99 in the late 80s. Yes it was a top 40 station, but then top 40 was mostly rock. It was like having two rock stations and 99x came along making it better. It was great having alternative on 99x, rock on 96 rock and classic rock on z93! I am going back to satellite radio and pandora.
