Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj signing on ‘Idol’? Alanis Morrisette in running, too

People-Alanis-Morissette.JPEG-0df9a

Who should be on the panel besides Mariah Carey? (Pick up to three)

UPDATE: Hollywood Reporter on Friday afternoon says Keith Urban and Minaj are close to deals. We shall see.

I’m insulted that I haven’t been asked to be on the “Idol” panel yet because it seems everyone else has!

The latest to confirm: Alanis Morrisette. She told CNN “Yes, I have been in conversations about it, and that’s the degree to which I can share the info right now,” Morissette told CNN. But, she added, she is open to the idea of being an “Idol” judge.

She seems very zen nowadays compared to her mid-1990s “You Oughtta Know” days. Would she be able to really give constructive critiques on the judges’ dais? Who knows?

I left her off the list Wednesday simply because there were so many others floating around.

The whole Nicki Minaj rumor is still floating around though there’s word the negotiations are slow going. Even AP ran a story.  But who knows at this point. Speculation is rife. I wish we could move on to other things. Are there any other things to write about?

- Clay Aiken sent out Tweets earlier this week making fun of the fact that his name sounds kind of like Rep. Todd Akin: “Lets B clear- THIS Aiken RESPECTS a womans right 2 choose. Maybe @reptoddakin could use some lessons from me on the female body! Haha #irony”

- Chart check. Kelly Clarkson’s “Dark Side” doesn’t appear to be doing particularly well on the top 40 charts and is currently stuck at No. 23. It’s at No. 7 on the Hot AC chart. Phillip Phillips’ “Home” has snuck into the top 40 at 39 but is up to No. 14 on the Hot AC chart. It’s the top Soundscan digital sales leader again among “Idol” singers with 141K more sold and 1.2 million overall. On the country chart, Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” is at No. 16. Casey James‘ “Crying on the Suitcase” is at No. 32. Mandisa’s “Good Morning” is at No. 24 at the Christian AC chart, after peaking at No. 20.  Jason Castro’s “Only a Mountain” has debuted at No. 38.

just use Mariah, P Diddy and some country singer and call it a rap.

Rodney, you should have ran with the Clay Aiken tweet as the lead in. It would generate more interest than yet another person being courted by Idol.

Yet again, you’d think that Idol was the only singing reality show competition on television. Masterful.

I like alanis although I don’t know her personally. To me, until we actually see all these candidates attempting to judge on Idol, we have no idea how good or bad they may be at it. Maybe Idol should do what “Live with Kelly” did and try out each candidate on a live show.

OMG:

“It’s [going to] happen man – Kanye wants to do [American Idol] and Kim want [him] to do it, too,” a source told HollywoodLife.

“[It isn't] final though, but he [wants] to do it badly and Kim [wants] him to do it, and whatever [she wants,] she gets. So watch out…[Kim's] excited though…and [she's] pushing [Kanye] hard to do the [show.] And you know [she's going to] be there with [him] if [it goes] right.”

The source also claims Kanye will wow audiences if and when he decides to sign a contract. “[He's going to] blow [American Idol] up this year, feel me? [He's going to] come with it and people will love him,” the insider adds.

I’d rather have Nicki than Kanye. I’d rather have a broken toaster oven than Kanye. I’d rather have a Beluga whale than Kanye, or a Narwhal! How cool would that be for Idol to have a Narwhal as a judge! GRRRRR I have a horn! That would be the best thing ever.

I can deal with Alanis. I’ve seen her on TV before and heard her interviewed on the radio a few years back and I like the way she comes off. And if that would put the Nicki Minaj thing to rest, even better. I was getting really discouraged when all the Minaj talk started. She, to me, is just pure trash and I would never want to hear a word that comes out of her mouth. And as far as the other Judges, Idol has always had the two guys/one girl (except Ellen) format. If they are going to stick with two guys, it really does seem to me that we are going to have a four person judging panel. Kanye West?!? Dear god no!!! that’s the best we could do. After that Taylor Swift thing, that guy should have just faded off into oblivion. Another big mouth ignoramus. Why not get some respectable people on the panel? Why does it have to be all these people that come with all this controversy attached to them. That is not what your “typical” Idol viewer needs to tune in. That is not what “we” want and it will more than likely turn us off. If we’re going four, then get Alanis over Minaj, and take Paisley and Pharrell (if they are still options), or one or the other, doesn’t matter which, if they are only going three. They both seem like good guys with success in the industry and both bring something different to the table. And they don’t seem like big mouth, morons. Dream people would still be Connick and Perry, but that seems to be just a pipe dream. Whatever happens, I hope it happens soon.

I have to give Idol credit for milking the story to death. I’m at the point where I don’t care who they get. Judge Judy? Judge Wapner? Larry King? Billie Jean King? or The Burger King? The only thing interesting is the responses. Although I do like Alanis and Lenny Kravitz. My guess is they know who they want and probably have them ranked in the order who they want. With Mariah and the dollars she’s getting they probably are looking to pay the other judges less. Mariah would probably through a hissy fit if someone makes more than her IE P. Diddy. Personally The Voice and X-Factor can’t get here soon enough for me!

I’m ready to hear singing voices not Idol judge choices!!!!

In terms of today’s rap / hip hop / pop hop music………..there is NO producer better than Kanye West. He is definitely one of THE MOST talented producers in this generation of rap.

If you accuse him of anything, acuuse him for being brutally honest about his feelings at the moment. Accuse him of bad timing for being honest about his feelings. But the guy knows what he’s doing in the music business. As a judge………….best believe he WILL be as honest as Simon was about his assessment of contestants.

If it’s true that there’s serious consideration of choosing Kanye, I look forward to it. I expect there wouldn’t be a dull moment. Maybe a bit polarizing for those who don’t care for him and those that do………but polarizing nonetheless.

But G, wouldn’t it still be better if Idol had a Narwhal instead of Kanye?

DanJ

G, the only problem I have with Kanye is Kim will be front and center. However they’ll probably be history by the time Idol starts. I would agree he would honest in his assessment and considering Idol will probably have a country judge it would bring balance. Mariah, Kanye, Alanis and Brad Paisley would give some balance from a genre standpoint.

Speaking of Judge Judy…I saw in my mom’s tv guide that she makes 45 million dollars a year. Take that, Ryan Seacrest. I’d do that job. I can be irascible and annoying! I can tell people to shut up! I can even fake the Long Island accent!

@bknsty14 – I agree with that comment about how Kanye West did Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMA Awards. Taylor being the rightful winner, and Kanye was very rude to Taylor… interrupting her acceptance speech. He got booed by the audience… Beyonce pretty much condemned him for being rude to Taylor… and Jay Leno showed Kayne some “tough love”, on the debut of Leno’s short-lived primetime show.

Kanye is no stranger to controversey… In 2005, he made a politically incorrect statement during the Hurricane Katrina telethon special… which NBC censored. Given that Kanye apparently has the gumption to say things that may not be politically correct, for shock and awe value… more power to him. No puns intended.

I’m okay with Mariah as Idol judge… and would okay with Alanis being an Idol judge. It’s still unclear if Randy will be returing to the judge’s panal in season 12. Other than not wanting Kanye as a judge… I don’t wish to see Nikki Minaj as Idol judge. Don’t really care for Adam Lambert, Clay Aiken, or Nick Jonas judging on Idol. I’d be okay with Brad Paisley or Pharrell Williams… or another big name in the music recording industry.

“Given that Kanye apparently has the gumption to say things that may not be politically correct, for shock and awe value…”

I give it he has “gumption,” but I think he was hurting so much from the death of his mother and other things going on in his life that he had a “I don’t give a isht” attitude. Walking around with a Hennessy bottle at an award show proved that. He’s slowing calming down and working on his craft. I’m beginning to like him more and more.

Most of the would be judges would be a drastic contrast from what Idol has had since Simon left. Idol has the chance to breathe some fresh air into a stale show, it would be refreshing. Nicki and Joe are the only two I don’t want to see.

Not sure if this has been said, but the problem with NMinaj is that she is TACKY, TACKY, TACKY.

Lady GaGa she’s not. I understand artists need to carve out stage persona, but her tackiness is a complete turnoff! AND, she needs to sing in her natural voice because she really can sing.

I bet somewhere Idol has hired a focus group to review the blogs to gauge what viewers are saying.
Rodney should throw up a poll and list all the would be judges and who we think should join Mariah so IF any of the Idol Powers that be read this blog they would have our input although they would probably go the opposite way.

I had to pick “Anybody else” for one selection because I didn’t see Narwhal as a choice.

And yes I voted for Nicki, if Mariah is “pushing” for someone that means the diva is already in full bloom for Idol. We need to counter it with another strong diva. Clay Aiken, Nicki Minaj, someone needs to counter the diva. She’s already acting worse than Jennifer Lopez.

Why isn’t Clay Aiken in the running, he stood up for himself nicely on Celebrity Apprentice. He also knows his stuff.
