The ‘Idol’ judges panel speculation continues: Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, Enrique Iglesias?

The endless speculation for the “Idol” 2013 judges panel continues.

The Hollywood Reporter has thrown out three more names: Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Enrique Iglesias are supposedly in the running.

Minaj would certainly be a coup. She’s at the top of her game and would help “Idol” draw a younger audience. But she is a spokeswoman for Pepsi, a problem for Atlanta-based Coca Cola, which has been a major sponsor of “Idol” since day one. She recently cancelled some concerts due to “strained vocal cords,” though it doesn’t appear to be serious. She tweeted she has postponed her fall tour, which could be a sign she’s coming to “Idol.”

We know “Idol” would like a country artist on the panel, too. Brad Paisley’s name was previously posed. Urban would be a serious A lister, too, if they could get him. And Iglesias would bring in a little sexy Latino edge. His vocal ability is on par with Jennifer Lopez but that is obviously not a criteria to be a judge on “Idol.” If this story is accurate, it’s obvious “Idol” is seeking four major current artists as judges, which would sound an awful lot like, um, “The Voice.” We here generally hate four judges because it gets repetitive and eats up time.

So far, only Mariah Carey is solid. “Idol” needs to make a call very soon because audition rounds are coming up soon. (They usually tape them in September and October.)

The tea leaves are showing Randy Jackson’s role on the show may no longer be a judge. But Jimmy Iovine, the story said, isn’t going anywhere either. Maybe they’ll have them team up as co-mentors.

If anything, “Idol” is clearly not cutting the budget for talent.

No to Nicki (half the contestants would sing better than her), no to Enrique (we’ve already had 1 Hispanic diva) and no to Keith (nice enough guy but let him judge Australian Idol).

And I’m sure Nicki’s Pepsi contract would be null and void if she drank from a Coke cup on Idol. The money from Idol would be much bigger but maybe not after the ensuing lawsuit from Pepsi.

Morning!

Nicki Minaj……ugh!

I hope that Idol is just amping up the speculation. Remember when they hired Ellen DeGeneres? No one had a clue until the day it happened.

I’m not a Nicki fan either. Isn’t she the one who flipped off the crowd/camera during Madonna’s Super Bowl half-time show? Classy move! I’m sure since the folks mentioned are the ones that Fox wants then its probably a done deal. Idol will do what it wants and honestly I’m more interested in The Voice and X-Factor since they’re both about to start. Idol is well down the road!

@DanJ No. That was MIA that did the flip off. Nicki is the one with a taste in fashion that makes Lady Gaga seem like Jackie O in comparison.

I was trying to figure out what cartoon character the picture of Nicki Minaj looked like. She looks like one of the teletubbies as an adult:

Idol is just throwing out names to remain relevant in the off season. XF and Voice are about to start fresh seasons and Idol doesn’t want folks to forget about them.

Not a fan of Nicki or her record company, but they are the biggest thing going in the business today. She wouldn’t be a good judge on any show. Not because of her style of music, but she has no talent. However, her videos aren’t that bad with the sound turned down.

I’m still holding strong to my opinion that no r&b or rap artists should be part of Idol. That’s not what the show is about today, and I’m sure the mainstream would agree.

I say NO to all but Keith U – I’d much rather have him – his songs are much more mainstream and much less hillbilly than the other dude, and he’s been really cute and personable on the Ellen show several times.

Nikki M would make ST look like a neutered choir boy! Boy, that Jonas boy keeps sounding better and better! And Diva-wise, we’ll all have our hands full with Mariah.

RoHo is on the money that we here do not like a 4-judge panel – maybe they could get several “big stars” and rotate them from week to week, so we’d only have to put up with them twice a month!

Deirdre: “Falling Skies” went out with a bang – really good last night. Thanks to the “pledge drive” I actually got to see 30 or so mins of the season finale of “Downton”, so was happy with that – love the last scene in the snow. January 6th – 3rd series starts – can’t wait.

I am not at all happy with the idea of 4 judges. What we need is less judging and more singing. I think 3 is the perfect number and they should stick with it.

Idol needs to place the emphasis back on the quality of singing. The best way to do that is to not allow singers to perform with instruments. Or………..don’t allow them to play instruments until maybe the final 4 or 5. They shouldn’t even be allowed to audition with instruments. Just take them out totally.

DanJ

@Deirdre- I agree Idol needs to keep the judges at 3. They tried 4 before and the experiment failed!
@G-100% agree! No instruments on Idol. For whatever reason it seems to give the contestants an advantage on Idol. On The Voice and X-Factor it doesn’t seem to be as much as a factor but I would still prefer to hear contestants sing and judge them on their vocal talent alone.

I listened to a couple of Nicki’s songs. Idol can’t be that stupid! Can they? I wouldn’t want my child to listen to those lyrics. Jeez!!!!! Why not just hire Luther Campbell if you want a potty mouth?

Just what Idol needs, a dayglow artist! If she would take the gig it would only because she can see the writing on the wall that her 15 minutes are up.

Nice to see you Rickster. You missed a lot of discussion about the Olympics, and that’s about it. We were holding off on the heavy topics until you got back.

G, I believe Idol still requires initial auditions to be performed without instruments. Of course then the judges ask for a second song with the instrument, and we get treated to a man and his git-fiddle.

Thanks Deirdre for the link and I understand why you couldn’t Copy and paste it. If Idol hires her for a judge then I’m not sure I would watch. Even if they manage to keep her under control or go to a 10 second delay to bleep her out the kind of example she could set is not healthy for young kids to see.

I admit I’m an old fashioned to a degree and I honestly can’t stand the idea of exposing children to this kind of filth even as a judge! I understand she uses the “F” and “N” word for shock value but children shouldn’t be exposed to it.

Believe it or not DanJ……….most kids already know what she’s about. The teens and tweens love her from the urban streets to the burbs. Some of the same kids that voted for pp and Jessica, listen to Nicki. She’s who I refer to as a pop hop artist. uugghhh!!!!

I’ve been a rap fan since the beginning…………..the genre has lost it’s true identity and is on a serious decline. Nicki isn’t helping.

From Box Office Guru on the so-so performance of “Sparkle” ($12 million)

Sony’s summer recycling program of sequels, reboots, and remakes continued with the musical drama Sparkle which debuted in fifth with an estimated $12M from 2,244 theaters for a decent $5,348 average. Starring American Idol champ Jordin Sparks and the late Whitney Houston in her final role, the PG-13 film played overwhelmingly to an older female crowd as studio research showed that the audience was 74% female and 62% over the age of 35. A remake of the classic film from 1976, Sparkle earned mixed reviews from critics but truly won over paying audiences. Its CinemaScore grade was a solid A. But despite that high score, sales slipped on Saturday and the overall weekend average was not as high as those for many other films aimed at mature African-American women. Direct competition is minimal over the next couple of weeks so it may have a chance to hold up giving the low cost $14M production a profitable run.

G, I believe it, I just don’t like it. Kids are forced to grow up too quickly with what all they’re exposed to from television, movies and music. Believe it or not I have a lot of old school rap artists on CD’s. From Kurtis Blow, GrandMaster Flash, Run-DMC, Tone Loc. When rap music started degrading women and promoting violence IE gangsta it lost me. Lyrics do plant seeds to the listeners. Trash is trash whether it’s rap, country or rock. Personally I’m waiting for a Full-Force reunion tour!

Nicki Minaj would be a great choice. She would make American Idol look like a big deal, and help remove the impression that the show is past it’s due date, and only for middle aged white women.

Well, I don’t have much to say on the judge-spec crap. If they go along the lines of a non-talent like Minaj, that may be the final straw for me with the show. I already dread the thought of watching the next weak-voiced white guy soar to victory… at least give me decent interesting judges to ease the pain. Grrr.

I don’t know guys, kids these days are growing up too slow. They aren’t moving out of the house, they aren’t having kids until they are older, not being married off in arranged marriages in their teen years.

Moan and groan as much as you want, but Nicki can’t do much worse than Steven Tyler did… beeps and all. Plus, you know she will clash with Mariah, that’s some good TV right there. I’ll also be able to day-dream of something else while we go to commercial breaks.

Idol and the other shows are not trying to hold to anything near what some might call a high standard/exemplary role-model in judges. They are more interested in success, flair, publicity, controversy, etc.

On the Voice, what was Cee Lo’s most famous song, before changing it to “forget” you? How many of Blake’s song catalog are based on drinking, drunk or the more I drink, the more I drink?

Steven Tyler had a drug history and sporodic relationships while they did a spoof on the many playboy bunnies in his dressing room on the show. Some of J. Lo’s videos/performances done on the show were close to R rated on supposedly a prime-time family show.

Some of Britney Spears music videos are the same, as well as guest runs by some of the artists. Demi Lovato has some problems with addictions and cutting herself, which hopefully is over now.

Just making the point that the hiring of judges is more of a fame game than any other criteria.
