Report: BET picks up Atlanta-based ‘Being Mary Jane’ with Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle-Union-221x300Actress Gabrielle Union will be spending more time in Atlanta because her show “Being Mary Jane” has been picked up by BET, according to Deadline.com.

The story says the drama is expected to begin production early next year. The pilot was shot in Atlanta in the spring.

[The Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office spokeswoman Stefanie Paupeck says she has not heard anything from BET yet about the status of "Being Mary Jane"]

In the show, Union plays an Anderson Cooper-type journalist who has her own cable show. “She’s a bit of a black sheep in her family in reverse,” Union said in a phone interview in April. “She’s by far the most successful in her family.”

But she has man problems to boot.

Other actors on the show include Lisa Vidal (”The Event,”) Aaron D. Spears (”The Bold and the Beautiful) and Richard Roundtree (”Shaft”). The series is created by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil of Akil Productions, which produces “The Game.”

Union has spent a lot of time in Atlanta in recent years. She was a star in Tyler Perry’s 2007 film “Daddy’s Little Girl” and the recent drama “Good Deeds.”

Her resume is impressive. She has starred in films such as “Bring it On,” “Bad Boys II,” and “Deliver Us From Eva.” On TV, she’s had regular series roles in “City of Angels” on CBS in 2000 and “FlashForward” on ABC in 2009.

BET is shooting all its other scripted shows in Atlanta, all sitcoms: “The Game,” “Let’s Stay Together” and “Reed Between the Lines.”

@dude You’d think it was with that misleading title!

Why?????

@ Dude- Did you even READ the article? It explains the underlying plot and there is absolutely nothing mentioned about weed. Maybe the words were simply a bit much for you to comprehend….

@ Why????? – Rodney was right. The title was a bit misleading. I too, thought weed had something to do with the show until I read the full article.

Scripted dramas + BET = one (season) and done

Why?????

@ M- I understand your point; but most relatively educated folks would probably actually READ an article before posting such a moronic comment. Also, not a big fan of the BET show ‘The Game”, but I think it is about to return for possibly season #5 or 6. Therefore your “One (season) and done” comment is rather pointless as well….

@M What you are saying is pure ignorance. All of BET shows have been picked up for another season. “The Game, Season 6″, “Reed Between The Lines, Season 2″ , and “Lets Stay Together, Season 3″ So I agree with @Why because your statement irregular, incorrect, and indefinite. #MovingOn

another show like all the rest that gives a false perception of living in Atlanta..making it look like its the land of milk and honey and cinammon for blacks here when its far from it..as it seem to be more poor ,and poverty stricken without skills here from the slums of the north, and northeast, with staggering unemployment,deep,deep,racism..stop paintin Atlanta aka detroit south as a fairytell

@M, I get your comment, he (or she) was refering to SCRIPTED DRAMAS, “The Game” is a Sitcom (Situation Comedy), so is “Reed between the Lines.”

This is a tired plot let’s see how it will play out: Successful Black woman hard driving but has a good heart. Has a nice car and big house. Can’t find a good man. She is conservative but has
friends with over-the-top personalities.

This plot is so tired, Gabrielle has played similar roles in Deliver us from Eva and Daddy’s little girl.
Also we have seen this same character in most Tyler Perry movies, Two can play that Game, Think Like a Man, etc.

Hollywood please come up with better plots. I’d rather spend my free time watch movies and TV,
than being on Facebook.
