I was watching TV yesterday and saw a trailer for the Clint Eastwood film “Trouble With the Curve,” which was shot in Atlanta earlier this year and it features Phillip Phillips‘ “Home.” NBC used the song for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, propelling the song to No. 1 on iTunes last week.

Eastwood plays an aging Atlanta Braves scout who is struggling to connect with his daughter, played by Amy Adams. Justin Timberlake, John Goodman and Robert Patrick are also part of the film. It hits theaters Sept. 21.

Among the places the film shot included Ryan Seacrest’s old haunt, Dunwoody High School as well as Macon, Athens, Jasper, Virginia Highland and Turner Field.

And here’s the “Home” video with Phillips himself:

With music writer Melissa Ruggieri, I’m going to interview Jordin Sparks, who will be in Atlanta tomorrow to promote the upcoming film with Whitney Houston “Sparkle.” Any questions to ask her?

Watched the trailer…looks like a fun movie. Love Eastwood, Adams and have been slowly warming up to Timberlake as an actor. It’s always fun looking at familiar places in a film or tv show. (another reason I’m looking forward to the Walking Dead returning. I know Senoia very well and was amazed to see the mess they made of it for the show…they DO put it all back together again)

Anyway, Phil’s song is hugely popular at the moment. Good for him!

Mercedes: The whole “Closer” season has been great, but I wouldn’t have expected less. It’s been a really great show all along, and I will miss it terribly! Last week’s show was so sad, it still brings a tear to my eye. And this week, TG for Provenza and his not-always-visible, but inate kindness and good sense. Still can’t figure out how Brenda’s leaving will occur, but still my fave scenario is that she finds out she’s pregnant, Fritz gets a job in ATL and they go home to be with Daddy.

Can’t wait to hear what movie you saw yesterday am – wondering if it’s “Hit and Run” – got a lot of stars, but sounds lame. I got a free ticket for a screening from AMC – will pass on that.

Deirdre, I too am eagerly awaiting “Walking Dead”. And word is “Downton Abbey” returns in January. There’s a lot of interesting, quality programming on tv lately, along with bunches of dreck.

Happy for Phil. Like the song.

Happy for Phil as well. I watched the “curve” movie being filmed in Athens for several days. Tried to catch a glimpse of Mr. Eastwood but missed him as he ducked into a downtown restaurant for a movie scene. Hope the movie is a good one.

That time of year, Harriett.

I have also seen The Walking Dead being filmed in a number of other places. We have some property down in Upson county and the route we take to get there often passes places where filming is taking place. They have filmed outside a closed roadhouse on the Flint River just outside of Woodbury. They have also filmed in Gay, GA. That town is quite popular for filming and there’s a new film with Shia LaBoeuf and Tom Hardy, Lawless, coming out about prohibition that was filmed almost entirely there. There’s a great old covered bridge just outside of town that is also a popular film spot.

More good news for Phil from Billboard:

Over on the Digital Songs chart, “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips zooms from No. 47 to No. 1 with “Home,” selling 228,000 (up 472%) — all thanks to the Olympics. The song was repeatedly used during NBC’s broadcast of the women’s gymnastics competitions throughout the week. This is “Home’s” second-best sales week — only its debut frame of 278,000 was larger.

I guess we can scratch Randy Travis off the potential judge list for Idol! How drunk do you have to be to walk into a store naked to buy cigarettes then threatened to shoot a cop? I wonder if he’ll serve time or just have an experience to write a country song about. Lets see….
I was drunk and I was nude,
but the cashier shouldn’t have been rude….
Kinda sounds like a hit record to me!

Back!

D, I watched a couple of episodes of Grimm last season and started to get interested. I went online to view recaps of the season and will now watch the second season. I like it.

Poor Randy Travis. He seems to have a real problem and needs help before he kills someone or himself behind the wheel drunk.

Heard that X-Factor may even have 2 hosts. Simon & Co. are going for a celebrity smash extravaganza.

Kevin McHale (from Glee) is on the short-list, which is rumored to list 6 people for screen tests that have either been done or are near. He is actualy a very good singer himself, but was not remarkable as a co-host with Demi Lovato on the Teen Choice Awards.

Also in the running for the job are Khloe Kardashian, Erin Andrews and Kelly Osbourne – per TV Guide magazine as reported by MJ.

RE: Randy Travis – sad to see he is struggling with alcohol problems. A judge can possibly order him into a recovery program. Pretty bizarre behavior invloved that could indicate perhaps a mixture of prescription drugs with alcohol that could be very serious – to him or anyone around him.

Just a few Olympic thoughts… (for these 2 weeks I don’t care about other TV… but please no Jonas Brothers on Idol.)

Aly Raisman’s floor routine last night was simply stunning! Who else saw it? Felt a little bad for Gabby, but even she said she’s just mentally exhausted at this point. And she has the 2 biggest golds in gymnastics. So she’s fine.

Aly’s scary-intense mom frightens me a bit, however. Those clips they kept showing endlessly the first week – yikes.

Poor McKayla Maroney (aka Victoria Beckham Jr.) I wanted her to win that vault gold. By all accounts she was a lock. But she was a good sport… even though she could’ve whined that her difficulty was off the charts, etc… nope, she said “I fell on my butt. I don’t deserve a gold medal.” And she made it clear that she wasn’t scowling over her silver, which she was glad to have. She was scowling at herself for not performing like she could have.

More to follow…

And loved watching Missy Franklin… thrilled that she’s considering UGA! Loved the fun, cool US swim team (except Phelps… I’m not a fan, though he does seem to have grown up this go-round) and how they all had the time of their lives!!

Currently enjoying diving a lot. And wish Lolo Jones had finally gotten her medal in hurdles, but happy for our two who went 2-3, especially little Kellie Wells.

And I actually rather like the song Home! They’ve put it to good use. It fits. I am, however, glad they’ve used mostly the music and the catchy wo wo wo part, without so much of Philip’s voice. I still don’t think he sounds very good singing it. But the song itself is very catchy and I’d buy it by someone else!!! I will forever think of the London gymnastics when I hear that wo wo refrain. (What do you call that? A hook?)

Not that I have any intention of being sucked into XF again, but Kelly O wouldn’t be a bad pick, if she’d just get rid of her smoky purply/greyish hair – she’s cute on “Fashion Police”. But Khloe K – yuck to say the absolute least. Someone earlier (last thread) asked which she was – she’s the very tall one who doesn’t look at all like any of the others, and who’s sire has been questioned a lot lately – apparently the mom fooled around with someone before she was born (the youngest of the gals).

Sister Jen – where’ve you been lately? Aly’s routine was near flawless and she was flying high as a kite – deserved the medal. Sorry for Gabby, but as you said – she’s got the two real biggie golds, so no need for tears or dismay there. All our girls seem to have been pretty played out after the first few events.

I saw the whole first “Grimm” season and loved it. Best character is hero’s buddy, a good monster. The actor (sorry, can’t remember his name! Think it’s a three-parter) is also in one of my favorite “Closer” episodes where he played a Catholic priest hiding a Mexican cop in his church.

As for Maroney – I noticed how all the gymnasts who vaulted before she did spit, a lot, into their hands, and deposited all that nastiness on the “apparatus”. Obviously a plot so the American favorite would slip and slide and land on her butt!!

Seth, X-Factor UK has two hosts but I think it’s silly. If I were Simon I would go after Shepard Smith but that’s just me. I’d leave the Kardashian’s alone. I’m kinda sick of all of them!

I hope Randy Travis either gets jail time or forced into a LONG recovery program. He has a problem and he will hurt or kill someone if he’s just slapped on the wrist!

Thanks Sam for clearing up that Khloe is the Sasquatch one. I know there is a lot of speculation regarding her dad, but what if her dad was really her dad and the others dad was a pool boy?

For the record: I don’t care.

Sam-A

The ‘real dad’ was very dark and swarthy ( and just to make him darker, he was a pal of OJ’s and stuck with him, while the mom was best friends with Nicole and knew what happened), like the other two and the son, and Khloe is twice the size of the others, and much “fairer”. Don’t like any of these people, but it is kinda pitiful for this gal with all the stuff about who her father is. She really does look like the preverbial “red-haired step child” in that family.

Unfortunately for P2 the trailer music is almost never used in the theatrical release of the film.

I don’t think I could drink enough alcohol to walk around naked in public and having seen how uncomfortable Randy Travis is on stage I’m guessing the blood test will produce additional ingredients.

“….well, if you can call what any Kardashian does ‘a job’.” Several retorts came to mind here but I’ll take the high road…. Nah, just the cleanest one; I think of all of the Kardashians as working girls.

Grimm is a really good show. Watched all of season one and really liked it. I’d suggest catching season one before starting two to get the back story on the characters. And his friend is the best part of the show.

And congrats to Aly on her medals. However, the judges scoring on the beam just goes to prove my point that the judges need to list their deductions and justify them. One second Aly is in 4th and after her coach protests the scores, she gets the bronze? Just goes to show that the judges can just give out whatever scores they feel like and fix it so whoever they want to win wins. At least it worked out for the Americans though.

As PP is racking-up plays and sales, Melanie has a ways to go to catch-up. All the star-power that Simon puts together, can’t overcome another show of has-beens, juveniles in groups, mean-spirited competition and call-back ploys. But the jury is out until we see if they want to go deep for talent or put together another mix like last year.

Grimm is pretty good and also a “fresh” concept (so rare in TV and movies today!) I’m waiting for the return of Justified, too!

Huge kudos to our women’s gymnastic team, our swimming teams and all the rest of the U.S. athletes! On the other hand, huge raspberries to NBC for their coverage (and lack thereof)!

Morning!

Phil’s airplay continues with SYTYCD which will use the song in its entirety tonight. There was also a question in the Q&A section of the AJC this morning dealing with the “upbeat song that catches your attention” played during the gymnastics.

The one thing I have always said(ok, I’ve said a lot of things pretty regularly) is that Idol can only be a springboard. If a winner can’t get the attention of non-Idol watchers, he/she will not succeed.

Morning!

I saw PP’s song being partially aired last night on SYTYCD. I was in a dilemma last night, though. I had set that program and the last episode of “The War” on PBS (excellent Ken Burns series), but I wanted to keep peeking in on the Olympics. As you know, my DVR will not allow this and you have to cancel one of the recordings. So, it was an adventure. I wanted to see Jason Richardson run (he got a silver) as he was a member of our track team at one time, here at the University of South Carolina. Also wanted to peek in on the women’s beach volleyball. So, I had fun trying to keep up and finally gave up on the Olympics, knowing I would see the recaps today.

Mario Lopez would be great! He’s adorable, both looks and personality, and gracious from what I’ve seen on that entertainment show he hosts. Stacy K might be good as well – seems nice and poised – but they’d make a strange pair – she’s probably at least 6″ taller than Mario before she puts heels on.

You’d think Simon would remember back to Dunkelman and not push for 2 hosts. So much better 2nd season of Idol with him gone, and only Ryan hosting.

I don’t really understand why Aria is so upset – why should a 20’something guy tell his 17 year old girlfriend about something that happened years ago, doesn’t affect their situation, and just isn’t any of her biz! The show’s been really good this go-round – guess we have only 2 or 3 more – I think they said the season finale was 8/28. Sorry to see it go.

Harriett – my child has already told me that I hog the TV so she has to record most of her shows. Thank goodness a lot of my stuff comes back on on Saturdays. That gives me time to watch some of her boring stuff with her (lol). But, glad she turned me onto PLL.

Sam from yesterday… where have i been… Working too hard. :-(

Bknsty14 – EXACTLY on the gym. judging. For example, though McKayla shouldn’t have had vault gold after falling on her butt… I’m not so sure the Romanian was the best either. It was more like she was the only one left they could push above McKayla after the unexpected fall. I thought others who went earlier were better. I think the judges held back early and “saved room” for McKayla to score big. If they can change scores… maybe they should’ve gone back and adjusted in that case too.

Gym and figure skating… both so subjective…

Idol alumni news: Jordin Sparks was a guest on local radio this morning. I was never the biggest Jordin fan, but I can stand her a lot more than PP. Of course she was promoting the movie Sparkle, her role in the movie, and Whitney.

She sang a song “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” (I think that’s the title) live on the radio. Not the best rendition of the song that I’ve heard, but she’s a pop singer trying to sing a soulful song. That seems to be the re-occuring theme too. They played a couple of songs featured in the movie Sparkle with Jordin, and it’s more of the same………..a decent pop singer that’s attempting to sing r&b/soul. That doesn’t work for me, but maybe pop culture will think it’s fine. Keisha Cole would’ve been my choice.

I have to give Jordin Sparks’ business/promotion management team a lot of credit. They’ve done an excellent job in pushing her brand in every nook and cranny of the business. So far seems to be paying off.

Just figure I would share the news of other Idol winners that are experiencing post season success. She’s in town so why not give her a shout out?!

Sam-A

Jenny: Ezra didn’t tell her – his younger bro has turned up, and he told her that Ezra and his high school girlfriend got pregnant at 17, and that his Mom (you did see the mom last week, I hope) bought her off to never see Ezra again and the girl signed conditions that she’d never try to see him again. Turns out he’s from an extremely wealthy society family. Mom also tried to pay off Aria, but she turned it down, so good ole Mom then tried to pay off Ezra to dum Aria. Not sure why Aria is mad at Ezra for something that happened years ago and nothing to do with her.
