Toby Keith turns down ‘Idol’

Toby Keith said no to an "Idol" judge job. CREDIT: AP

Clearly, “Idol” is considering a country star on its panel: Toby Keith has turned down the gig. His reason? Too busy.

Keith is a hit-making and tour machine and has been for years. His career has shown no signs of waning. He’s been an A-list country since “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” came out in 1993. About 55 singles later, he’s still going strong. His past three singles (including the hilarious “Red Solo Cup”) went top 10. He comes off kind of gruff, might have made an interesting panelist. He’s had his share of controversies over the year, especially his tiff with the Dixie Chicks a few years back.

No word yet on any new panelists as of now or where Randy Jackson is going (or not).

- I’m speaking to Philliip Phillips at 6 p.m. EST to talk about the “Idol” tour coming to Gwinnett Arena August 5. Will post the interview on Monday. Enjoy the weekend!

It is interesting that Idol went after someone that is still churning out hits. I’m sure other current artists would have a similar answer, that includes Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Katy Perry.

As for going Country, they probably should have done that a few years back, and I’m not even a fan.

It’s got to be Carrie Underwood.

It would have been a total disaster had it been Toby Keith. After living in Nashville for 13 yrs., and having heard a couple of very negative stories about him from people who came in contact with him, he does not have much character. Both these stories were believable, so, no, thank goodness it’s not TK. As others have said, it needs to be Brad Paisley or Carrie Underwood. Another good one would be Reba McEntire. She has been around awhile and knows music, all kinds. She would be fair, and critical when she had to be.

If they would have landed Toby, they could probably use hundreds of Red Solo Cups filled with beer as part of the new Idol 2.0 advertising.

Brad Paisley had a hit with a song called “Alcohol”, but it mostly pointed-out the problems caused-by alcohol.

Speaking of the Country Side of Drinkin’ – heres the new video with Bucky Covington, Shooter Jennings and some other faces you will recognize if you watch closely.

Drinking, driving and assault rifles. Well, they base so many movies on it, their just riding the wave, doing a spoof. What do you think of this video? OK for 12 year-olds, or should it be rated? This is Youtube, lots of hits already.

Delta ain’t always ready when you are. ’nuff said.

My favorite Toby Keith song for a good laugh isn’t a drinking one. It’s Weed With Willie. ’nuff said.

I still think Paisley would be a great choice. A degree in “Music Business” as a result of an earned scholarship from ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) hints that some of his crazy lyrics and hooks probably weren’t accidental. I’m guessing they would have to pony up even more for him than Toby though they did surprise me by doing just that to get Mariah.

But my dark horse candidate purely for guaranteed reality tv adventure is still Kinky Friedman. Singer and author who makes a point of being politically incorrect even when he is running for office. My favorite title of his that I can post here is: Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns In The Bed.

With that I’m taking my buns to bed.

Don’t know if Toby would have fit the Idol mold. He probably would have been too direct (and politically incorrect for the producers) in the long run. And since he’s made his own career his own way for quite a while now, he wouldn’t be afraid to butt heads with Fuller and company ’cause he wouldn’t be afraid to walk away.

(I believe that anyone who thinks JLo left on her own is nuts! She had THE perfect venue to promote herself and her various ventures. Let’s see how long it takes for her to fade back into relative obscurity.)

Hope everyone enjoyed last night’s opening ceremony. Can’t really say that Sir Paul did himself proud. Started out pretty shaky but definitely got better. Did we ever see Daniel Craig again after he and the Queen jumped out of the helicopter(yes, I know he and the Queen didn’t reallyjump out of a helicopter)? Not sure I like the torch but anything is better than our MacDonald’s french fry box torch so I won’t complain.

I’m glad Toby turned it down and agree with MyPatootie on Carrie and Reba. I love Reba!!! Sorry my crush for her goes back to the 80’s.

The Olympic opening ceremony was the most boring thing I’ve ever seen. Thank God the Braves were playing and UFO files were on. However I was prepared to watch the Weather Channel if need be. I do hope everyone has a SAFE weekend!

I think “Thank God the… UFO files were on” has to be the first time God has ever received that particular bit of gratitude.

While I’m sure it would be good for the program to add someone from country, I really wish they wouldn’t.

Seth – drinking, driving and assault rifles – you forgot “Texting while driving”, seemingly the leading cause of death for 17-year olds. I’m a bit bothered by assault rifles right now, especially after reading the Time article “How Guns Won: Why Americans Have Turned Against Gun Control” AND reading about how the shooter in Aurora had been under psychiatric care for a longt ime – and STILL was allowed to stock up on his arsenal … so I didn’t care much for Buckey’s video.

I liked the Olympics show fine – way more humane than the Chinese one – but hated the fast-forward type editing of the parade of nations. In the past, enjoying the crazy outfits was half the fun.

American has turned the show into WHO THE JUDGES ARE. The shows original formula was about the Contestants..the people and their journey. So now we have “NEVER GONNA SELL HITS” talent, and mega watt..big money Judges.

They dont care about finding the next big star…WHAT A JOKE…its all about making the Stars richer..and these up and coming wanna be’s….go figureit out.

Reba would be great. She is popular, well know, and probably not touring as much. 10-20 million a year is plenty for most, but if a star is still producing albums and touring, they make much much more than that in a year.

Ellen was HORRIBLE.

Simon is the only judge they’ve had that thinks like the music industry. They need him back to be relevant.

There are a few people who, if selected, I would not watch it, just as I am not watching AGT due to Howard Stern. ONE of those would be Clay Aiken, and Richard is right, Ellen was HORRIBLE! It’s time for a legitimate, funny, music savvy person like REBA !!!!! She is very well-spoken as proven by her co-hosting some awards shows. I know she would be open, honest, and critical when she needed to be.

I love the idea of a country artist as a judge. I’d go with Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw or Brad Paisley. But honestly, if they don’t go country, they should move heaven and earth to get Harry Connick, Jr. He is funny, intelligent and knowledgeable when it comes to music and musical talent. He would be great!!

MP, what have you against Clay? On Celebrity Apprentice, which I watched against my will thanks to my husband, I found him unusually articulate, thoughtful, hard-working, and smart.

From what I’ve seen of Reba, she’d be a good judge. Raising her profile would also help Kenan Thompson on Saturday Night Live, so that’s another plus. ;) If I’m not mistaken–and I might be, when we’re talking about country–she’s not as much of a hitmaker as she has been in the past. Given her past show appearances, I wouldn’t be completely surprised if they added Dolly, but I don’t think my husband is in well enough with God for that to happen.

I found Sara Bareilles to be a competent judge on The Sing-Off. Adding her isn’t a bad idea. Even better on that panel was Ben Folds–he could considerably raise the musical cache of the show. He knows music better than most musicians. Anybody know whether TSO is coming back? It’s by far–by FAR–the best of the talent shows in terms of sheer skill.

Let me see if I have this right: Toby Keith can’t be supported because he voiced an opinion in opposition to The Dixie Chicks, but we also can’t support Toby Keith because he voiced an opinion in support of Obama?

For me it is kind of like that tasty chicken place that you folks have down there that we don’t have up here in Oregon. I would not base my decision to go there on an opinion of their head honcho, but on the fact that their chicken is really tasty. I’m opposed to his opinion, but have not heard that they have discriminatory hiring practices, and their chicken is really yummy.

What does that have to do with Toby? Just replace him with the chicken joint. If I like his music I’ll listen to it, even if he is a blowhard. It’s when people like those vapid Kardashian’s say or do something that I don’t like that I will really turn on them, because let’s face it they contribute nothing to society.

Was that too political? Oh well, we have a new thread Monday ;)

Just guessing – but Toby may have been asked if he would consider a spot on Idol, before the ink was spilled for a 17 million deal with Mariah. If they wanted to secure a “household name in music”, and Mariah was not in the stable for sure yet, perhaps he was more of just a “short list” candidate.

I recall something from maybe a couple years ago, that the TK machine grossed around 60 million dollars between movie, record sales, concerts and appearances. Did not see anything said about Idol money offers or grinding-out the dollars with TK, which could have been a huge bill.

TK, love him or hate him, is also very “individualistic”, and trying to fit him into the patent Idol machine would be like trying to drag a golf ball through a garden hose.

While many reports supposedly from Idol/Fox exec’s talk of cutting expenses, revising, etc. — then they are pumping mega millions into these celebrity judges, —— has to make someone wonder if they are changing the show for the betterment of finding and promoting new talent, or just putting a new sign on the same old door.

Sorry…just have to smile at that one. Ryan has been doing “other things” for years. His radio show, his charity work, hosts E News, red carpet events, Rockin New Year’s Eve, Olympic athlete interviews. That’s only a small part of the list of “other things” Ryan does.

Morning!

It was all Olympics all the time at my house. I liked some of the Opening Ceremony but not all and NBC deserves a swift kick in the (dare I say it) patootie for editing it although Danny Boyle also deserves said kick for not being a little more editorial. Rushing through the athletes’ entrance because he couldn’t make some of those segments shorter was rude.
