Take that, “Real Housewives of Atlanta”!

America now has a new trashy local show critics can complain makes Atlanta look bad:  “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” on VH1.

The reality show – which focuses on local hip-hop musicians and their twisted love lives – is now pulling in more viewers than “Real Housewives of Atlanta” did in its fourth season.

This past Monday’s episode hit a series-high of 3.5 million viewers, with another 2.1 million who caught the repeat at 10 p.m. The show has seen steady growth after opening at 1.9 million in its first airing in June. The 18-49 rating has jumped from 1.1 to a 2.0 over five weeks.

Through six episodes, the show has averaged 2.9 million viewers, comparable to the original “Love and Hip Hop.” In metro Atlanta, the show draws around 150,000 viewers.

The show is also lifting the fortunes of “Single Ladies,” the Atlanta-based scripted relationship drama despite the departure of Stacey Dash. “Single Ladies” hit a series high 2.66 million viewers this past Monday.

I solicited comments on my Facebook page about the show. Tarryl BrotherTee Rosier sampled one episode and dubbed it “pure trash.”

“I dislike VH1 even more now that they are showing that program on their station,” Rosier wrote. “Even though, I don’t like both programs, I will say that RHOA has more class than LHHA.”

Demeeka Mhoon likens the show to “a wreck on 285 u see miles ahead, but u still look once u pass by. Its absolutely horrible as a TV program.”

Juanita Vann willingly admits she enjoys it: “A lot of people who watch it are ashamed to say so because they feel it portrays African-American’s and Atlantans in a negative light. I watch it EVERY week! It’s funny, entertaining and oh so ratchet. People who are calling for boycotts of it need to have a seat. This is ENTERTAINMENT. If you don’t like it, just don’t watch it. The simple fact that it’s pulling in such strong numbers is a testament that somebody likes it. By the way, I feel it is more trashy than RHOA, and the “housewives” have lost a bit of their edge. I was totally bored with the last season. I hope the next season can capture some of the craziness from prior seasons that made it so much fun to watch!”

Nyssa Green, on Twitter, simply called it “a hilarious train wreck.”

I resisted but now that it’s clear this show isn’t going away, I will begin writing recaps Monday.

Hip-Hop is indeed TRASH, as are those who cultivate it.

A disgrace to our hometown of Atlanta and a detriment to our your people.

No argument here.

Good Piece, Rodney.

People take this show and other reality shows to seriously..Its just entertainment…By the way years ago some people didn’t like ‘The Cosbys” either..saying it didn’t represent true black life in America..

Mark I completely agree..And if people feel this represents all black Atlantans, then they are the ones who are truly short sighted. I mean if someone in Wyoming doesn’t have enough sense to realize LHHA is for entertainment, then they probably have more serious issues in their lives than this show. Also for the critics that say it sends a bad message to our youth, it’s not a kids show, that seems more like an issue that parents are not raising their kids, but letting television raise them. BTW, I don’t even watch the show, not my thing, but for those that do let them enjoy their guilty pleasure.

I agree with Mark and Mechi, obviously, people have way too much time on their hands if they believe or try to live out the way the show is portrayed on television. This television show and others are ONLY for entertainment purposes, sure they are trash, but sometimes it’s funny watching trash do trashly activities on television.

I’m learning a lot of valuable lessons from the show and will aplly them to my actual life. I think Stevie J is a real man who is simply battling with the perks that come along w/ being a multi-millionaire many times over. He’s trying to work things out with Mimi, who is a real woman for sticking by his side no matter what. Not everyone is perfect. I too have 4 kids but that doesnt make me a bad person. I pay what I can to their mothers and spend TIME with my kids. In the end, they’ll remember time with me looking at toys in Target much more than they will a mere $200/month in child support.

Great show regardless of what the haters are saying!

People hate to see the truth that’s really how people get down in Atlanta. Men have more than one girlfriend and the women fill as long as the man have the funds to make all them happy they are cool with everything. You have to also realize half the show is not from Atlanta. Also what do you expect have the men in Atlanta are gay. Really there isn’t much of a choice just share and know your place. Alot of the rappers have wives at home and a girlfriend at the studio and then the groupie on the road. If you don’t like what you see turn the television. It’s the truth.

Bout Business, “remember time with me looking at toys in Target much more…” dude, looking at toys is not something to brag about compared to being realistic and knowing that your kids have REAL needs like food, clothes, shelter, lunch money, help with homework, listening to the issues they encounter dealing with other kids, spiritual needs, etc. P.S. Please use protection to avoid a 5th child by another baby momma, and most likely additional STDs. Yuck! You’re just too wrong for words.

Hip-Hop is being portayed by people who has no clue what true hip-hop is. TV is just showing people who has made a some foolish choices in their lives and have to live with those decisions. I wished that we had shows that show the great side of Atlanta than this crap. Many people of color have rich and fulfilling lives. TV just show the ones who don’t.

Just like the movie “Brown Sugar” a couple of years ago hip-hop has grown up, but the people in it hasn’t. Hip-hop is global now. It crosses so many cultures and nationalities. Unfortunately, the popular media groups have tried their best to keep it closed in a box. I pisses me off.

I will say one thing. We as men have to do a better job in being men. Women must not act like nothing less than powerful women. A peach tree produces peaches, not pears nor apples. Men, if want a “10″ in a women, then you must be one. Women likewise…..

This show is a train wreck and an embarrassment for Atlanta. Every time I go to Montana, or somewhere out West to go fishing, and tell the guide(s) I’m from ATL, they make some comment about the Housewives of ATL or some other comment like that. If one is not from here, and is somewhere else in the country, he or she might think that ATL is comprised of nothing but black people driving fancy cars, renting mansions, having children out of wedlock, and filing chapter 7….

One has a right to like whatever they choose, one also has the right to protest. This show is a microcosm of today’s young black society, it specialize’s in ratchet behavior and fans of the show enjoy it for entertainment purposes or its similar to the life they have or one that they would want. If you can’t figure out why people are upset then what does they say about you? This one is so easy, Older black folks from another era just don’t get the younger generation and vice versa, but at the end of the day someone is right and somebody is wrong on this one.

Let’s face it, LHHA is no worse for than RHOA and in some respects may be more entertaining as the participants in LHHA less pretentious lay more of their lives open in front of camera.

Sure bearing witness to love triangles and relationship conflicts in real time as they are unfolding will make for some embarrassing moments, but on some level I have to respect the participants for their willingness to lay so much of their lives on the line and subject public scrunity.

I believe the shows increasing popularity is steming from the fact that what’s being protrayed are real life situations that most if not all of us have experienced or are experiencing on some level.

Anybody that says “It’s just entertainment” doesn’t see past their nose length. There a lot of things that are entertainment for many people. Some people abuse other people for their entertainment, some people use drugs for entertainment, some people find it entertaining when innocent people get beat up or hurt. I don’t see anybody say “Lighten up it’s just ENTERTAINMENT”

Also let me put somethings in perspective for those “It’s just entertainment” folks

America is 300 Million people – Black people ONLY make 14% total which equals about 33 Million, spread them out over 50 states with majority of concentration in the bigger cities. So there many many Americans that are NOT black, that may never interacted in depth with black their entire lives and I know quite a few, they only interact maybe at work for some extend.

But these shows like RHOA, Hip Hop, etc. gives them the perspective that this how the majority of black women are and what they go for in their lives, mix it up with the Hip Hop songs and videos and there you have the perception. If it doesn’t bother you don’t get upset when someone treats like that.

Cops are not all bad but yet their overall stigma is so, so go figure!

Yo Rodney Ho, you call this a monster hit/entertainment? As you and I both know, if it is dumb, stupid, lazy and crazy, we know who will irresponsibly sign up first. Again, shame on VH1’s executives for exploiting the African-American Community with these programs all for a quick buck. Unfortunately, as time as shown, these programs have failed to be productive for the African-American household. I am sure it these programs depicted the Asian community in a negative way, you would be offended too. So, let’s write postive articles and educate the folks to use their time and resources much wiser rather than continue to be exploited by TV Executives at VH1. I believe the time is now!

Stevie J is a disgrace to the male black race. All men are not like this. I have 3 kids by 3 different mothers and I married the last mother who I have been with for 9 years. One of them I had at the age of 17, 22 and 36. I am 37 now and getting too old for anymore women or kids. They are all expensive. All of my kids live with me and the oldest is due to graduate college 2013. I have a 15yo 10 th grader who loves football and 1yo is my heart and last child. But just because you have many children by different women doesn’t make you a bad man, it makes you a bad father if you cannot take care of them all, nevertheless show them be a leader by example. Stevie J rap it up man and go get a real job!

I’m black … I’m an Atlantan … Native Atlantan. Black folk need to chill out and quit being so embarrassed when a subset of people share our nationality act a certain way. Quit feeling as though their actions represent you. Every nationality has a stigma about them, but that doesn’t represent them. All asians don’t represent the associated stereotype. Low and behold, all white people don’t represent their associated negative stereotype. Neither do hispanics or any other nationality. Take a chill. It’s entertaining television … but Lil Scrappy doesn’t represent me. Neither does Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. I represent me. You should to.

And let the record reflect, Swamp People don’t represent all white people. Chill out.

I’m confused by all the negative reactions to the Love & Hip Hop -Atlanta tv show. How is this show any different from the old soap operas that once filled-up daytime tv? Soap operas had characters who cheated on their spouses: The bad guy who cheated on his nice-girl wife. Some of the women were determined to seek revenge on the person who wronged them. They manipulated each other and sometimes the characters tried to hide their past to become someone new…..And all of this was in one episode. What’s the difference between LHHA and soap operas or other reality shows? What’s the big uproar about? Is it because the characters are Black and based in Atlanta? As if we do not go through the same drama and heartache as others. I’m Black and from Atlanta and I personally know people who are experiencing the same issues as seen on LHHA. They live in Decatur, Southwest Atlanta, Jonesboro, Lawrenceville, Austell, and Roswell. They all see themselves in the show. They can relate to the people on the show…including the brothas who struggle with being monogamous. Perhaps they will see themselves from a different angle. The stripper/drug dealing moms can realize they can turn their lives around and show love for their kids. The ex-con mom can reunite with her adult daughter after years of abandonment and shame. Perhaps this show can help sistas who are thinking about compromising themselves in the name of a career. This tv show will most likely make women (and men) wonder if it is worth using your body as a bargaining tool. Let’s not forget the folks who are trying to overcome setbacks and tragedies to live a happy life. I see all of this in LHHA. I see people I grew up with. I see my coworkers. I see some of my relatives. I see my neighbors on the show. I believe the show can actually inspire someone living the same life as those on the show.

Ok here’s my Top Five concerning Love & Hip Hop
1. It’s just a show (some of it is probably scripted)
2. The genre of DRAMA is as old as Shakespear and grabs the audiences attention.
3. All Black, White, Latina, Asian and others don’t act the same (even within their own races) you got your good, your bad and you got your ugly.
4. Shows like these will continue to thrive CuZ Folks are watching.
5. For all you haters (get a life) get over it.

People can continue to say that shows like this are just entertainment, but until you’ve met people who acutally live like this and think it’s okay, then you don’t really know what you’re talking about. The sad truth is that, whether or not people believe these shows are scripted, these “entertainers” come from parts of town many of us never had to drive through. Come on…how many of us had mothers who were pimps?

Like the other comments of “watching a train wreck” and not being able to turn away because it is sad, dysfunctional, and funny-all rolled up into one! But who is smarter than the average bear? The entertainers on the show or the producers, or VH1?

Yep, watched it by mistake, once, because I saw Atlanta skyline in the background. It does appear scripted (I watched the ice cream scene with girl and her mom in Chamblee). I really wished these guys that are lucky enough to have a tv show, please use proper English/grammar and not speak in Rap/Ebonics. For the kids sake in this town that watch this stuff….at least prove you have some sense of proper English. Or buy a book with all that money you are making!

Dixiecrat posted: “Every time I go to Montana, or somewhere out West to go fishing, and tell the guide(s) I’m from ATL, they make some comment about the Housewives of ATL.”

Right!?!? The fishing guides in Montana are watching VH1 and RHOA to the degree that they can comment on it??? Must we lie to make a point? Let’s pretend what you’re saying is true. You need better associates. I’m black… and when I travel the world, nobody brings up those shows when they find out I’m from Atlanta. Sometimes, it’s the company you keep.

I think Mimi need THERAPY MY HERSELF. Where is Mimi’s mom are other close relatives to give her sound advice? I do think Stevie is a poor excuse for a man period, simply pathetic, unexcuseable, and so on. I know that some of the people that reside in Atlanta are a little ashame of the show because they not only represent hip hop community but the state of Atlanta. There is another side to Atlanta-but the producer decided to include some blank, blank, people that do not care who they step on and what they do to get what they want. For the ones that have kids, what are you thinking-but again I GUESS YOU ARE NOT.

I encourage every parent to sit down with their daughters and sons and watch the show. It’s a perfect real life example of:

A. The kind of lady you don’t want your daughter to be
B. The kind of man you don’t wan your sont to be
C. How a man shouldn’t treat lady
D. How a woman shouldn’t let a man treat her
E. How it sounds when you speak poorly

Ok,

But before I sit my child down to watch this show – I will need to explain to him/her that what they are watching is just that a show. It’s probably scripted and sometimes it may mirror various issues that some of us maybe going through.

LOL ….I will not be using TV to raise my kids…that’s my job.

FOLKS IT’S JUST A SHOW ——IT’S HOLLYWOOD – IT’S SCRIPTED….IT’S FOR FUN….IT’S NOT REAL…………

It is a sad day to read the responses supporting these trashy programs. Is it entertainment or exploitation? Folks, it is 2012, please wake up for your own good! Just look where we, as African-Americans, are ranked (education, jobs, health, ownership, networth, etc) in this country. We are doing an injustice to our proud heritage supporting these sort of negative programs. WE MUST DO BETTER and WE MUST DEMAND BETTER! Enough said, peace out!

Hey Exagg…I assure you I’ve been out West fishing in MT each of the last 11 years and the “guides” there have satellite dishes and cable and they do watch VHI and the shows that are on there. Unfortunately, ATL is “stereotyped” negatively from the ATL Housewives and the LHHATL shows. People who haven’t been here may think that our city is comprised of nothing but black people who are living beyond their means, having kids out of wedlock, aspiring to be a rapper or actor, and filing chapter 7 because they can’t pay their bills. The producers of the show know what they are doing to attract an audience, and to each his own. It’s just not for me and I think it’s an embarrassment.

@ Miss.J
It might be a show and it might be scripted. Personally, I don’t think they have the acting chops to make it seem real if all of it was scripted. I do think they use extras at the various backdrop locations.
Unfortunately, there are people in the real world that think and behave the way these people do. I know some of them from my 6 years in Atlanta. As far as using a TV show to educate a child, nothing is better than a visual aid to reinforce what you’ve been saying.

@Quagmire
You do need an Atlanta Urban dictionary to understand Scrappy and his mom. When I need to laugh I imagine Scrappy as a telephone customer service rep.

This show is not about Hiphop as not one single HIPHOP artist is a cast member. Common is hiphop Mosdef is hiphop Lil Scrappy is a failed RAPPER. Please stop confusing the two. I honestly did not think there was a show that come make African American women look worse than NeNe and her crew. I was wrong. This is a pity and the housing marketing is going to start to suffer if we continue to let the world think we are this dumb. Who would want to live next door to any of them?? Seriously!

These people are sharing their personal lives with us and just like everyone else these people are not perfect. Just sit back and enjoy the show. I wish all the cast well. Thanks for sharing your lives with us. I’m looking forward to watching you guys every week until the season ends.

I do not watch either show because I think it is a direct disrespect to black people not only who live here in Atlanta but in the entire country. Alot of people are right that it is entertainment and should be viewed as such as well as it is on cable and there are more channels than just this one to watch. If you do not like HWOA of LHHA…then turn it off. But my question is, how many white people do you hear complain about My Redneck Vacation, Swap People, or Duck Hunters? It is about white people doing some of the craziest stuff but in a different way.

I read all of the posts and I’m still confused about the outrage and embarrassment some of you are feeling. People, lighten up! The LHHA show will not change any opinions of Atlanta, Black People or the south. No one changed their opinions of Italians after watching Jersey Shore, Housewives-New Jersey or Mob Wives. Why are you so bent out of shape over a tv show that depicts the real lives specific people in Atlanta? Change the channel! This show will not set anyone back and it will not slow down the progress of Black people. MLK is not shaking his head in disgust because he knew people just like the characters on LHHA. He did not judge or scold them….He tried to help them. Some of you should consider avoiding tv all together. The extreme over-reactive personalized responses you gave are more troubling than any tv show….even the one about red necks in England.

lol, shows you how ignorant people can be. your statement comparing the Cosby Show t this crap.. Ok, so in your words, ” The Cosby Show didnt represent black America”. perhaps it would have been a good blue print to study… instead you have uneducated, greedy, low class idiots representing your demographic… must make you quite proud… quite frankly, I dont blame Bill Cosby for ‘ calling out ‘ the younger generation of black americans. you are not acting ‘ white ‘, by portraying doctors instead of talentless rappers, etc. Yes, talentless.. I shoot photos of these mindless fools.. it’s sad, but i laugh AT you.. No, it’s a very small part of what I do, so dont think i am ‘ exploiting ‘, nice try…

T.V. was invented to be a mindless distraction so it’s really only fulfilling it’s purpose. Get outside do some exercise, read a book (before they become completely obsolete) use your money to travel the world and see how other cultures live so you can have a more clearer perspective on life as whole. When you value your time here on this planet you will not want to waste it watching other peoples problems when you really need to get on with fixing your own. Not judging anyone that watches the show it is what it is.
