Brad Paisley the latest possible ‘Idol’

The names keep on coming: now Deadline.com says country star Brad Paisley is being considered for a slot on the judge’s panel.

Paisley is modern country royalty. All 30 of his singles have gone top 20 on the country charts, 27 of them have hit the top 10 and 18 landed at No. 1.

He’s approachable, down to earth and funny. Many of his tunes involve great wordplay (”Alcohol,” “Water”) and humor (”Online,” “Celebrity”).  He has hosted the CMA Awards with Carrie Underwood for several years now.

Given the success “Idol” has had with country music, this would be a smart move if they can come up with a deal. “The Voice” already has elevated Blake Shelton’s profile.

Check out Paisley playing a contestant on an “Idol”-like show from 2003 with his hit single “Celebrity” and “judge” William Shatner slagging him:

We are still awaiting Randy Jackson’s status but we should know relatively soon what his role will be. With Carey on board, I can’t imagine “Idol’ would get rid of him since he’s Carey’s manager.

- Mariah Carey’s wackiest moments on camera are included on Eonline.com, including her classically unsteady visit to “TRL Live” in 2001 below:

- Kellie Pickler, who is between record labels, has decided to work the cover of a “lad mag.” Remember those? Her excuse for wearing a skimpy outfit? A salute to the military! And yes, the military will appreciate this:

kellie-maxim

- And talk about switching topics. William Balfour, the man who killed several of Jennifer Hudson’s family members in 2009, has been sentenced to three life sentences. The judge called his soul “barren.”

Well, I, for one, hate to see Idol go country. Imitating The Voice here? Ugh. Paisley has lots of music cred, but I hate to slant the show this way. The pure country acts get on my nerves.

Jenny: we’re back in sync with Brad Paisley – not my music or my type of singer.

I wish the producers would just get it over with and announce the full judges panel!

Sad note, Chad Everett, “Dr Joe Gannon” on “Medical Center” died at 75 yesterday. I so loved him in that show. And Sherman Hemsley also died same day – funny guy.

Harriett: could not agree more with you.

I agree with G(seriously???) If Brad is anything like Blake Shelton, he’ll do a good job and would not necessarily favor country music. I mean, if Randy Jackson can fully appreciate Carrie Underwood, why couldn’t Brad Paisley praise a rocker or a jazz singer?

I admit I don’t know a lot about Brad Paisley but if you put a PURE country artist on Idol you run the risk of more and more contestants that sing country music. For Idol to continue to be successful you need balance from a genre standpoint. I understand that country music is big and their fans passionate and for that reason maybe Idol needs a Country Idol to stand on its own.

However I have to admit I thought Blake Sheldon did a great job on The Voice. I thought he worked well with Jermaine Paul. But The Voice is a different kind of competition and they’re mentors not judges. But Idol will do what they want to do regardless what anyone thinks. I just think whoever is brought in should have some cross-over appeal. Carrie Underwood would be perfect! Brad Paisley? Not so much! IMO

Hi y’all,

Well, I feel like I’ve missed a lot of news. Mariah as Idol judge is not exactly my fave. Yes, the woman can sing, (when she chooses to!), but most of her recent work is the “whispery” kind of generic R&B. I’ve seen a few things where she can be funny, and she certainly doesn’t mince words….still I guess we’ll see.

Contrary to it seems most here, I am quite enthusiastic about Brad Paisley. I’ve seen him in concert a couple of times, and he can sure put on a very entertaining show. He’s also worked a lot with Carrie since right after she won Idol, so maybe he’s learned a lot about the show from her? Plus, he’s charming and has some of the same quick wit as Blake Shelton, tho a bit more “family friendly.” I think he could be an awesome judge, and I don’t think he’s being a country artist would necessarily mean a huge rise in country contestants.

We’re going to need some balance to the diva…a humble guy like Paisley would a start.

Harriett

But, remember? They were giving Blake a mentor (Michael Buble’) to keep him from narrowing his focus strictly on country.

I like Country, but don’t want to see a country singer be judge. I think a country singer will not be able to appreciate the tone of the music. Once country gets in the fiber of your being, I think you become jaded to other types of music. I may be wrong.

Harriett, but it’s apple and oranges. In The Voice, Blake mentors and at some point will sing with the contestants. He’s a bit more invested due to the fact that he’s working closely with the contestants and probably tended to favor country acts as he could relate more to them. That said, he did choose Jermaine who ended up winning! And before Michael Buble’, he had Kelly and Miranda Lambert as mentors.

I don’t get why country gets singled out in this. Ironically, all the country that’s been on Idol lately has been put there by judges who are not involved in the genre. So, adding a country artist as a judge doesn’t mean that’ll change. If a judge as a bias towards a specific genre, they have a bias. We don’t know how they are going to perform until they are seated at the table. For all we know, Mariah could have a big R&B bias that would cancel out this supposed country bias. At the end of the day, the outcome is decided by the voters, not the judges. We’ve already talked about how the judges lack of influence on the voting. I don’t think changing the judges will have much of an impact on that.

I tried posting this a few minute ago and keep getting messaging that it is awaiting moderation. Trying again without direct links to see if that is the problem.

As noted by Rodney, Brad Paisley is Modern Country. Meaning he can and does crossover to other genre and he is a musician not just a singer. I don’t know if Idol is actually considering him or not but some of you guys are being unfair just because you don’t like country. I lean mostly toward old fashioned rock but that doesn’t mean I liked the burnout that is now Steven Tyler as a judge. I appreciate almost all forms of music with the exception of bad rhymes being chanted to lousy forms of percussion and sitar music (this from once being subjected to 2 hours of Ravi Shankar prior to one hour of George Harrison).

Brad just doing the guitar thing. Starts twangy but then rocks with some excellent slide work:
youtube.com/watch?v=Z8CrcXy_bMg&feature=related

With B.B. and of course half of the guitar is from Lucille and it is easy to tell who is who but it sure as hell ain’t Country:

If there shouldn’t be a Country artist as a judge can we say that there shouldn’t be an R&B artist as a judge. The genre of music that the judge comes from isn’t going to hinder or help them with their ability to judge. Judging has nothing to do with the type of music the artist performs.

Keeping that in mind I don’t get the comparison of Blake to Brad. They aren’t the same person, if you want Blake to be a judge on Idol then they need to get Blake, not Brad. Brad will judge like Brad, not like Blake.

Maybe Idol should take a page out of The Voice’s book and go to 4 judges. 1 from each genre. R&B, Rock, Country & Pop!
Brad Paisley may be a great judge. I’m not saying he’ll be biased about putting more country music contestants in. What you would have is more country music fans tuning in each week and voting for whatever country singers are in the competition. As a voting block they’re (country fans) are loyal so you can bet the farm the final 2-3-4 singers will be country singers. Idol will become COUNTRY IDOL!

G

I don’t believe it matters too much which genre the judge comes from. The judges main job is to select the best contestents to fill out the top 10-12, that will compete for votes and perform on tour. Generally, most of your basic / popular genres are represented in the top 10. It’s been that way for quite some time. Even though hard rock and r&b acts haven’t won in many….many seasons, they have always had a presence on tour.

I’m not sure if a country artist would be the difference maker, in placing a disproportionate number of country artists in the top ten or not. It would be a dissaster if that were the case.

Deirdre

Ugh! to 4 judges. Idol tried 4 judges and the only thing 4 gives us more than 3 is a lot more judge-speak and a lot less singing.

Brad Paisley would be a good choice, and could be objective, from what I’ve seen. Just as much as a rocker or R and B guy or gal, anyway. What’s the problem? Seems I hear a little “discrimination” from the “sensitive” crowd on here against country music. Sounds like the “Simon Cowell Syndrome”. Personally would rather see Kellie Pickler than Brad. She would be hilarious and does know something about music now, and the process since she’s been through it. She cracks me up, even unintentionally sometimes.

OH, BTW Deirdre, a person or animal’s buttocks is not obscene or vulgar like time I checked. It’s like belly buttons, everyone has one(at least I hope). JTesla did imply my screen name was vulgar or obscene so big difference there. It’s obvious he is in your “inner circle’ and will not get a “bad boy” or reprimand but such is life. The world has bigger problems. At least let’s be honest about it. “Derogatory” is neither “obscene, vulgar, or dirty”.

DanJ

G, if you don’t think genre’s matter then do you think a certain % might tune in for the judges? I tuned into The Voice because of the mentors they had which is some of the elite singers around. If I’m being honest Jermaine Paul was not the best contestant on The Voice. But the genius of the show put an R&B singer with a country mentor Blake Sheldon and Juliet Lewis with Cee-Lo. I think the judges and their popularity translated into votes.I honestly think country music fans of Blake helped Jermaine win. Had Jesse gone with either Blake or Adam instead of Xtina he would have won.

Idol doesn’t have mentors so the judges can’t directly help a contestant win. But the popularity of a judge may draw in more viewers of a specific genre. I’m not saying don’t bring in a country music singer as a judge. I’m just saying watch what transpires if they do! If I were a Pop or R&B singer I’d try out for X-Factor or The Voice. I will watch Idol regardless up to the point there’s only one genre represented anyway.

Tsk, tsk, MyP. What semantics has to do with an “inner circle” is beyond me. Do I like JT better? Is this middle school?

I have known JT for a few years now. I respect almost all of his opinions, as I do most others here whether they are “inner circle” or not. JT has come to my defense during vicious attacks, as I have come to his defense. We have a history. You and I do not…yet.

I am a conservative but will disavow your opinions on certain subjects believing that ALL people deserve respect until their actions prove otherwise. Those actions do not include one’s choice of friends or life partners unless the aforementioned friends and partners are murderers or pedophiles.

You believe what you want to believe, you have every right to do so. This inner circle is wide open to anyone who wants to be a part of it. But I can’t stop people from stepping back from some of your viewpoints. That’s on your shoulders, not the “inner circle’s” There is a very good reason why political discussions are banned in here. We’d all like to stay friendly….except for the regular disagreements on how Idol is run and who the best singers are.

DanJ, you have a point. I think it matters in terms of viewers, especially if they are well known. LA Reid really had me tuned in on XF because I’m very familiar with his track record.

I still believe Idol has a formula for the top 10 that the judges must help to implement. I’m sure some of our estemed hard core Idol fans of the blog will correct me on that if I’m wrong on that assumption.

I think the formula for The Voice works great, especially in the beginning. It seems to be a good mix of judges/mentors and genre.

I’ve found that those that are either far right or far left view others who are not quite as far along the political spectrum as being members of the opposite ideology. So an extreme liberal would view a moderate liberal as being conservative etc. Nothing “abnormal” with that other than it is labeling which is often a tactic used in an attempt to squelch discussion or dissension.

As far as classifications go I believe Deidre would be more accurately described as being libertarian. That is if you expand the linear view of the political spectrum to a box or a cirle. I feel comfortable saying that as she has alluded to that on many occasions.

MyPatootie, yes we are both guilty of omission (regarding my focus only on “tugged”). In my defense I did not want to keep repeating the phrase that you take offense at. I have no problem with it, I’ll probably use it again, but I’m not going to use it repeatedly just to make you uncomfortable.

“If you want to see “insults’ check some of his posts from the last few days directed at me.”

By all means call me out on them. You were willing to cut and paste the phrase I used that you took offense to, why not post the dates and times of the “insults”. I won’t improve if I don’t know. I work to “keep it civil”. However, if you were just counting coup… then well played.

I have to admit I’m tired of the WGWG. Why can’t we have a WGWB? I’d enjoy a little Banjo music. I do have a question and K&C fan may know the answer. How many African American or any other minority contestants have played an instrument on Idol? Seriously I’m curious?

I just wish Idol would have a Mother’s Finest night. For all us old coots that would be timeless and their music still rocks!

Thanks,Dear Harriett!

Rickster: from earlier this am, I have been thinking about your job loss. Seems a number of large co’s incl Home Depot are getting ready to have hundreds of job openings, many of them office jobs. On Channel 11 every morning, between 5:30-7:00 (kinda sux to be up that early!) they mention both job fairs and companies with jobs available. I don’t know what you do, but hopefully there will be something great around the corner for you.

Sorry to beat this horse some more, but one more post from me on the topic: I decided that some “self review” was in order, I did call MyP “pouty” and was a little less than my civil self in that post so for that I honestly apologize. Now I’m willing to move forward and forget as I have after I’ve had disagreements with Deirdre, Rickster, Mercedes, Sam, G, and probably just about every other “regular”.

Rickster, I’ve been meaning to ask, will you still have computer access after your last day?

Vast, Dante didn’t mention Liberals or Conservatives….. or Libertarians.
As you know, he came up with nine circles of hell – with sub groupings and pre- and post groupings. He started with Woods outside hell.
Then Ante-hell, aka the Vestibule.
Then the Circles:
I. Limbo
II.The Lustful
III The Gluttons
IV. The hoarders and the Spendthrifts.
V. The River Styx, the Wratful and the Sullen
Across the Styx
VI. The City of Dis – the Heretics
VII. The Violent
Ring I The River Phlegeton – Tyrants and Murderers
II Violence Against Self
III Violence against God and Nature
VIII. Malebolge – The Fraudulent
Bolge I – Panderers and Seducers
II – Flatterers
III – Simoniacs
IV – Sorcerers, Soothsayers and Fortune Tellers
V – Barrators and Grafters
VI – Hypocrites
VII – Thieves
VIII – Fraudulent Councellors
IX – Sowers of Discord, Scandal and Schism
X – Falsifiers
The Well of Giants
Circle IX Cocytus – The Traitors
Caina – Traitors to Kindred
Antenora – Traitors to Their Country
Ptolomea – Traitors to their Guests or Host
Judecca – Traitors to their Benefactors
The Exit From Hell

Kinda fascinating. Yes, I looked it up. Didn’t know there was an exit from hell… which leads to Purgatory.

On the job front, I’m in week 3 of an 8-week career workshop. I’ve got my profile completed at my church’s job web site, I’m working with the church employment center in Tucker, and am working on finalizing my resume’ which I hope to do by Friday. I know the “world” would tell me that I need to be frantic and worried and fearful… but I’ve just got this feeling of peace about the whole thing.

And D. – found a fun companion book to “Downtown Abbey” called “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle” – that’s the castle in “D.A.” It’s written by Lady Fiona Carnarvon, who married the current Earl in 1999. They took over Highclere 8 yrs ago.

Almina was an enormously wealthy heiress, the illegitimate daughter of Alfred de Rothschild, who was “contracted in marriage” to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon to save his ancestral home… much like Lady Cora Crawley does in the TV-show.

Personally I put people who throw around absolute political labels even when the subject has nothing to do with politics in the sub-basement below the lowest circle. (I always thought the 9th was the lowest as in 9th gate, etc., been awhile).

Harriet – Didn’t mean to pick on liberals. I disagree with both about half the time depending on the issue. Just don’t see many using the conservative label as a near expletive like I see it with liberal.

Rickster, it absolutely can be a blessing, and an opportunity too. The fact that you have a sense of peace about it, tells me that you’ll be fine. Mercedes, the Carnarvon clan is very interesting in their own right, as it was Lord Carnarvon who financed and was involved in the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. Believe he died by accident shortly thereafter, as apparently did most of the people involved with the tomb. I had seen a review a few months go of this book (good), but had forgotten about it, so thanks for the reminder.

K&CF: Did you see my post days ago about the new “Lucky” mag? Kelly’s on cover and with a great story. Looks lovely.

Rickster: One important note, if you can manage it, keep the COBRA insurance – I found when I left a job and didn’t take it, as my insurance would kick in in 60 days at new job, just how important it is. Was taking walk, tripped on sidewalk construction junk left around, broke my nose, plus tore a huge chunk of skin open in y area between lips and nose (what is that called) that required emergency plastic surgery, and tore the skin off my knees and hands. Luckily I was still within the “take the Ins” range, and quickly sent off my app and check, so the thousands of $$ were covered.

G, I agree with you about wg but until Idol goes back to JUST singing and no instruments I think you’ll get the same results. I think you have to balance the playing field. Deirdre, so sorry. I am helping my baby sister go through this with her mother-in-law right now. Her husband of 37 years died eight months ago and the m-i-l was living with them at the time. She was left with a 94 year-old who is not always pleasant to be around. Getting the m-i-l fixed in a place of her own, along with trying to move herself, my sister is about at her wits’ end. You’re on the mark, DanJ. Allowing contestants to perform with instruments has made a HUGE impact on Idol (for the worst imo). Some musicians couldn’t hold their own in a vocals-only competition.

Idol should just have two winners, male and female. Split the winnings between the both of them evenly. Cut Ryans’s salary and give more to the contestants.

Deirdre

Thanks for the good thoughts. Mercedes, I started on this blog because I needed a decompressing fix after my dad died and it has been my salvation on many a day since then.

August is approaching fast which means that Idol needs to get it in gear and find another judge soon. Sept. usually starts the judges’ audition phase in some cities.

Did Rodney mention that Idol will run a tour bus audition in some of the smaller towns? Publicity ploy but it fits.

Kinda like the idea of a bus tour, reaching out to small town talent who can’t afford to go to a big city to audition. Musicians tend to be far more open minded about different genres of music than non-musicians. Most musicians understand what it takes to be a good musician and they can appreciate those who are good, no matter what type of music they play.
