Brad Paisley the latest possible ‘Idol’

The names keep on coming: now Deadline.com says country star Brad Paisley is being considered for a slot on the judge’s panel.

Paisley is modern country royalty. All 30 of his singles have gone top 20 on the country charts, 27 of them have hit the top 10 and 18 landed at No. 1.

He’s approachable, down to earth and funny. Many of his tunes involve great wordplay (”Alcohol,” “Water”) and humor (”Online,” “Celebrity”).  He has hosted the CMA Awards with Carrie Underwood for several years now.

Given the success “Idol” has had with country music, this would be a smart move if they can come up with a deal. “The Voice” already has elevated Blake Shelton’s profile.

Check out Paisley playing a contestant on an “Idol”-like show from 2003 with his hit single “Celebrity” and “judge” William Shatner slagging him:

We are still awaiting Randy Jackson’s status but we should know relatively soon what his role will be. With Carey on board, I can’t imagine “Idol’ would get rid of him since he’s Carey’s manager.

- Mariah Carey’s wackiest moments on camera are included on Eonline.com, including her classically unsteady visit to “TRL Live” in 2001 below:

- Kellie Pickler, who is between record labels, has decided to work the cover of a “lad mag.” Remember those? Her excuse for wearing a skimpy outfit? A salute to the military! And yes, the military will appreciate this:

kellie-maxim

- And talk about switching topics. William Balfour, the man who killed several of Jennifer Hudson’s family members in 2009, has been sentenced to three life sentences. The judge called his soul “barren.”

And D. – found a fun companion book to “Downtown Abbey” called “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle” – that’s the castle in “D.A.” It’s written by Lady Fiona Carnarvon, who married the current Earl in 1999. They took over Highclere 8 yrs ago.

Almina was an enormously wealthy heiress, the illegitimate daughter of Alfred de Rothschild, who was “contracted in marriage” to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon to save his ancestral home… much like Lady Cora Crawley does in the TV-show.

On AGT… is the guy who keeps getting kicked in the crotch a WGWG (white guy with gonads)? ;-)

Considering his new hirsute look, I think Casey Abrams should do a cover version of the late, great Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London.”

“I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic’s…. and his hair was perfect.”

I love that line. :-)

Mercedes – Ahem, I was just playing the Devil’s advocate. Personally I put people who throw around absolute political labels even when the subject has nothing to do with politics in the sub-basement below the lowest circle. (I always thought the 9th was the lowest as in 9th gate, etc., been awhile).

Harriet – Didn’t mean to pick on liberals. I disagree with both about half the time depending on the issue. Just don’t see many using the conservative label as a near expletive like I see it with liberal.

Rickster, it absolutely can be a blessing, and an opportunity too. The fact that you have a sense of peace about it, tells me that you’ll be fine. Look at it as a chance to do something you maybe have always wished you could. It might just be that the layoff (?? is that what happened -I’ve missed a lot lately) is giving you that chance. :-)

I am good with the Olympic pledge. Good idea! :-) And I am hoping for someone besides Michael Phelps to get all the glory this time. Looking especially forward to gymnastics, diving, track and swimming. What are y’all excited to watch?

Oh, and you knew I’d have to chime in when the dreaded wg word was mentioned, right? (I’ve been trying to soften the blow by just saying wg.) ;-)

I am tired of the acronym too, BUT I am far more tired of the actual problem. Until they take steps toward fixing it, it’s probably always going to get talked about…

Maybe this year. New seasons are always full of hope. :-)

I love the whole feel of the Olympics. The idea that, through sports(and if not sports, ANYTHING else)we can come together on a global level and compete in good humor and good sportsmanship. It is a heartwarming experience. Very much looking forward to anything they want to show me! I, of course, root for my country but feel happy for whatever country wins whatever event.

Good morning!

AGT last night. Quality acts went through, IMO. America did not vote for the cute kid, but he will probably make it back via the wild card choices.

I feel the same way. I’ve grown very weary of Idol results for many seasons.

Harriett I agree with you on AGT! Honestly Howard Stern is not a bad judge, of course I expected s train wreck.

Mercedes, the Carnarvon clan is very interesting in their own right, as it was Lord Carnarvon who financed and was involved in the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. Believe he died by accident shortly thereafter, as apparently did most of the people involved with the tomb. I had seen a review a few months go of this book (good), but had forgotten about it, so thanks for the reminder.

K&CF: Did you see my post days ago about the new “Lucky” mag? Kelly’s on cover and with a great story. Looks lovely.

Rickster: One important note, if you can manage it, keep the COBRA insurance – I found when I left a job and didn’t take it, as my insurance would kick in in 60 days at new job, just how important it is. Was taking walk, tripped on sidewalk construction junk left around, broke my nose, plus tore a huge chunk of skin open in y area between lips and nose (what is that called) that required emergency plastic surgery, and tore the skin off my knees and hands. Luckily I was still within the “take the Ins” range, and quickly sent off my app and check, so the thousands of $$ were covered.

G, I agree with you about wg but until Idol goes back to JUST singing and no instruments I think you’ll get the same results. I think you have to balance the playing field. You will probably still have white guys in the finals because of the voting system and who votes but it may help and is worth a try.

DanJ, I actually love Howard STern as a judge, and, like you, was expecting the worst. He’s the best judge in America, imo. The acts that went through last night were all different, but really solid and fun.

Deirdre: How’s your Mom doing? I imagine that’s taking up a huge chunk of your time. I know what was required with my Mom – luckily one of my sisters was able to do most of the weekday grunt work. I made sure, as executor, that she got a payment for all her services before the estate was divided up. And it seemed paltry for all that she had to do between getting the house ready to sell and the AL home.

Deirdre, so sorry. I am helping my baby sister go through this with her mother-in-law right now. Her husband of 37 years died eight months ago and the m-i-l was living with them at the time. She was left with a 94 year-old who is not always pleasant to be around. Getting the m-i-l fixed in a place of her own, along with trying to move herself, my sister is about at her wits’ end. I have stepped in best I can, but still… I know in your case it is entirely up to you, so many sympathies and kind thoughts are sent your way.

All the best to Deirdre, who helps Rodney make this blog so much more than an entertainmnet forum. – I’d call it a a decompressing fix I need several times a day.

You’re on the mark, DanJ. Allowing contestants to perform with instruments has made a HUGE impact on Idol (for the worst imo). Some musicians couldn’t hold their own in a vocals-only competition.

Idol should just have two winners, male and female. Split the winnings between the both of them evenly. Cut Ryans’s salary and give more to the contestants.

Thanks for the good thoughts. Mercedes, I started on this blog because I needed a decompressing fix after my dad died and it has been my salvation on many a day since then.

August is approaching fast which means that Idol needs to get it in gear and find another judge soon. Sept. usually starts the judges’ audition phase in some cities.

Did Rodney mention that Idol will run a tour bus audition in some of the smaller towns? Publicity ploy but it fits.

The “bus tour” thing is kinda what “Duets” did.

DanJ

The bus tour sounds gimmicky to me. I feel the same way about Internet auditions. I understand trying to tweek the show to draw more interest but they should look at changing voting and cutting out instruments. Personally I think Idol has lost it’s identity. Who are they? What are they looking for?

Kinda like the idea of a bus tour, reaching out to small town talent who can’t afford to go to a big city to audition. Remember that Tennessee (I think) girl whose idea of fun was jumping off bridges? Her trip to LA was her first airplane trip ever. Who knows how many singing talents are dwelling in hidden hollers?

Musicians tend to be far more open minded about different genres of music than non-musicians. Most musicians understand what it takes to be a good musician and they can appreciate those who are good, no matter what type of music they play.
