Sherman Hemsley, best known as the bombastic dry cleaner owner on the classic CBS sitcom “The Jeffersons,” has died, according to police.

He was 74. TMZ broke the news, saying he died of natural causes.

The actor first played the role of Jefferson on “All in the Family.” “The Jeffersons” was a spinoff that ran from 1975 to 1985. He later played Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC sitcom “Amen,” which aired from 1986 to 1991.

His last guest appearance on TV in 2011 was on “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne,” playing his George Jefferson character along with Marla Gibbs, who played his sarcastic maid.

He broke the mold on broadcast TV in the mid-1970s, playing a successful, white-collar black man. George was a loudmouth, who would frequently yell at his beloved wife “Weezie,” but underneath his brash exterior, he had a soft heart.

Sad to hear. I can just picture him doing that unique, strutting walk up to the Pearly Gates now.

Sherman was a gentle soul and Godspeed.

George would have said that someway, somehow a honky is responsible for this.

Truly a loss of another great sitcom actor. He will always have a place in my heart. His character on the “Jeffersons” was truly a 1st class performance.

if christians believe HELMSLEY is in heaven why is everybody sad that hes dead? shouldnt y’all be happy that hes in heaven? obviously y’all dont really believe in heaven thats why everybody fears death

Well I am an atheist, so I can’t speak for Christians but as my mom the christian would say, they are not sad their loved ones are in heaven, they are sad that they are separated for a while until reunion in heaven. . But tell ya what, when ANY msnbc personality dies, I will celebrate death.

Fun fact o the day…Weezie was almost 20 years older than George, at the time of the Jeffersons.

When an atheist understand what we as human being feels when someone we care about dies, but as Christians understands they are in a better place, what is that saying about a “Christian” who doesn’t?

Remember the show fondly…the scene where he insists that his maid, the wonderful Marla Gibbs, iron his boxer shorts – priceless.
