Q100 ousts another jock: this time, mid-day host Brittany

Brittany q100

What did you think of Brittany?

Apparently, if you’re an employee of Q100 and get called into the office on Monday afternoon, don’t expect good news.

For the second Monday in three weeks, the top 40 station has dumped an on-air personality, probably for budgetary reasons. On June 18, it was Wendy Adams, the traffic reporter and on-air morning host with the Bert Show. Today, it was Brittany Huntman.

Program director Rob Roberts is the king of brevity. His email June 18 about Wendy took up all of 12 words: “Wendy leaves Cumulus Atlanta today. We wish her great things going forward.”

Today, he kept it… 12 words again!

Brittany is no longer with Cumulus Atlanta.

We wish her the best.

Brittany’s last job was in Seattle.

The most recent Arbitron report for Q100 in May showed mid-days as the station’s weakest link. While mornings ranked second and late afternoons ranked third among 18 to 34 year olds, the station ranked only sixth during Brittany’s shift. Among 25-54 year olds, the station ranked seventh overall but only 11th mid-days. That pattern has been generally the case in recent months.

Brittany’s name has already been scrubbed from the Q100 website.

Her bio on her blog included the following:

Hey, I’m Brittany! I’m “that girl that comes on after The Bert Show” or alternately “that girl I won a prize from!” when I run into you on the street or at a Q100 event. I live in the Virginia Highlands, and you’ll find me eating at Harry & Sons sushi, walking my dogs in the park, or catching some great improv at Dad’s Garage. I’ve got all of the best brunch recommendations in town, just ask!

Her final blog entry was at 2:06 p.m. today about Taylor Swift’s new fragrance.

If you want to reach her, her Linkedin page is probably your best bet.

Rodney, do these people not have contracts? So they are just regular “at-will” employees like the rest of society?

The only thing dumber than a PD blaming a midday jock on that daypart’s low ratings (considering how little the average midday jock gets to actually speak) is how Katie (below) spells riddance.

@Jimmy, exactly!

Naturally, Rob Roberts isn’t going to blame low ratings on their repetitious song rotation.

Another reason I listen to my Sirius Radio and will not listen to anything owed by Cumulus.

How much does Sirius pay people to come on and make comments on every terrestrial radio blog entry? Alright. We get it already. Maybe satellite will pick up the Kimmer and everyone can have a big bowl of STFU!

With 4 really expensive jocks in the morning, how can there not have been a firing at that level yet?

What kind of music did she play? Every time I get in the family car and my wife has scanned to Q100, they’re always playing some terrible pop song that’s really annoying and repetitive, I know I’ve never lasted through a song on that station. Just maybe this is why they can’t get listeners?

Wendy was axed on a Thursday. She wasn’t given the opportunity to tell listeners “good-bye,” and though that may have been good for ratings, RR didn’t want to hear her voice again. Her FB letter, thank goodness, was clearly proofread, and she definitely had help with it (judging from her lack of verbal communication skills). If only everyone who was fired (it had nothing to do with budget, people) could get the outpouring of warmth and encouragement that Wendy is. She is a very, very lucky woman to have this experience under her belt, and it never should’ve gone as long as it did. Keep cleaning house, RR! .

I’m going to ask my question again, because I’m really curious as to the answer. Radio talent like this young woman are brought in from other places and they know in advance that they can be fired for cause or no cause at all?

Kirk, Georgia (and most states) are at-will employment. Employers don’t need a reason besides “didn’t feel like employing her/him anymore.” If you are harassed or there is perceived discrimination involved, that’s another story.

That is why I never come in to work on Mondays. Yeah c’mon. If I’m never there, they can’t call me in to fire me. Plus, I make all of the money for the station anyway. BrandSmart Baby!!! Sniff… Call me Brittany, I’ll get you a job at the Pink Pony.

Kirk — Wendy was not “radio talent”, she was the traffic person. It’s the equivalent of something an intern can do. Bert used her on the morning show bc she was there, and Cumulus probably thought it was a good way to get more for their money. However, she was not a part of The Bert Show.

MissNadine — Cumulus does not pay the salaries for the 4 members of The Bert Show. They are all contracted separately by The Bert Show; now that it is in syndication, it is basically a separate entity.

Some people have contracts. When they do, there are clauses as to what pay they receive if the station decides to take them off the air prior to the end of the contract term. Where there is no such contract, the statements as to employment at will noted above are correct. Generally, when someone is hired away from another market, they have a contract in case they get axed, format changes or the station is sold.

Who gives a crap about spell check? If you don’t like reading it, DON’T READ IT. Better yet, GO BACK TO THE LIBRARY WHERE IT’S SAFE!
As for the ongoing “Elaine Zittac” method of firing people instead of improving the songs played, it’s yet another casualty of those who have power misusing it. IMPROVE THE SONGS, THE LISTENERS WILL FOLLOW. Please write that down, as you have a shorter memory span than a 3 year old brat…

This one is easy. #1 People are working during midday, nobody has time or is able to listen to the radio. That’s not rocket science. Furthermore, In the evening after everyone is off of work, tuning into a radio station is the last thing they’d want to be doing. That’s not rocket science either.

Q100 is a joke… The Bert Show is a Joke! Wendy does not have a “radio” voice she always said stupid things…Brittanyt only came on the radio for a second then it was back to predictable songs… I say sell out to some A.M station so people can stop being made a fool of for there enjoyment….

Per Rodney, “On June 18, it was Wendy Adams, the traffic reporter and on-air morning host with the Bert Show.”

Let me be the first to congratulate Wendy on her post termination promotion by the history revising Rodney Ho.

Lest anyone be deceived, Wendy was simply one of the many personalities that appeared on the show during her tenure. Rodney’s sentence structure suggests she was someone critical and important to the show…suggesting even that she was (the) on-air morning host.

I am not sure what is a bigger falsehood; Rodney’s assessment of her importance to the show, or the perception that she had some measure of talent in the first place.

Kirk, I know Brittany personally and can tell you that yes, she was quite aware that she could have her employment terminated on the spot. She was also well aware that radio in general is a very unstable industry. Last I heard, she had a channel on Sticher and did voice over work for syndicated programs so this wasn’t her only job. That’s about as much as probably should be revealed in a public blog. Brittany is a great person and has taken on many great causes such as abused pets (of which she has several rescues). I don’t know if she is going to move or not since she has put down roots here but being a smart woman I’m sure she’ll land on her feet and find other work.

Wow bad ratings and a station making a move? I’ve heard that does happen every so often. I’m sure she’s a nice person and has talent but maybe she should apply at dave-fm if she would prefer better job security.

Tired of it...

Wendy and Brittany both were given the shaft and they were no better or worse than any of the morning crew on The Bert Show. It is just a sign of the times.

James– my original question was for Rodney, but since he’s apparently exercising his right to monitor this blog without further comment, I appreciate your clarification.
