Jessica Sanchez signs with Interscope Records; Kellie Pickler loses her record deal

AP photo

Good news: “American Idol” season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez confirmed on Twitter that she is now signed with Interscope Records. Expect an urban vibe.

Bad news: Season five country singer Kellie Pickler has lost her deal with Sony after her latest album “100 Proof” failed to take off. Her previous two albums did well enough but this shows how tough it is in this business. One bomb and you’re out!

Her manager Larry Fitzgerald said in a statement to ABC News Radio, “Kellie’s contract with Sony came to an end and they mutually decided not to renew.” (I love how they spin these situations as “mutual.”)

Meanwhile, season 11 winner Phillip Phillips continues to mend after his sixth kidney stone surgery. He tells E! Online: “I’m doing good, just been recovering and just taking it easy,” the singer tells us. “But also pushing myself to get my strength back and just get some energy back.”

The official Whitney Houston/Jordin Sparks “Celebrate” video is out. Bittersweet. But Sparks looks incredible and sounds vibrant:

Not a surprise regarding Jessica, congratulations. I was a little surprised to hear about Kellie. Very interesting.

Thanks Rodney.

Now I’m excited about “Sparkle”… thanks, Rodney.

Comments on posts from last thread:
“Paint Your Wagon” – what’s not to like? Clint singing “I Talk to the Trees”?
“House of Elliott” – yes! Loved that show. In these “Project Runway” days, that show would do well!
“Final Countdown”, 1980, with Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, Katharine Ross.
“Philadelphia Experiment”, 1984, Michael Paré, Nancy Allen (who?)
“Philadelphia Experiment II”, 1993, Brad Johnson, Marjean Holden (double who?)

Thanks to RoHo on giving Jessica a little love. She’s been real busy after the show. Good news on Jessica being signed with Intersope Records. Not a real big surprise, but its good news to hear that things are progressing well with her…………being that she was the latest victim to the WGWG. A very mediocre WGWG.

Are we sure that G isn’t really Negativo? ;-)

Won’t be around tomorrow or the weekend. Hold down the fort and have fun!

I liked Philadelphia Experiment. Whatever happened to Michael Pare? He had a lot of potential but went nowhere with it.

Still, this should be a very challenging time for Jessica. Roho says that he expects an urban vibe. Urban vibes today mean hip hop, pop, and club. It ranges from Nicki Minaj to Lady Gaga. Even Adele has gained some respectable airtime on r&b radio.

Can Jessica compete against the likes of Nicki Minaj, Rhihanna, Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Melanie Fiona, and Elle Varner? Jess definitely can sing, but that’s about it (sorry to say that’s not enough in today’s market). The aforementioned women are some bodacious bodied women that men love to see.

Don’t know if the market has room for a talented teen such as Jess. Her team will have to be smart and go with her strengths. I think she should start with a strong ballad. That goes over well in the r&b market. Turn back the clock on her like Stacy Latisaw,

So, G: you’re saying Jessica will be hard put to compete with a bunch of BGWBB – Black Girls With Butts/Boobs.

She’s got a really good voice, but as G said, not much else – not distinguishable – I’d never recognize her voice on the radio. Don’t know exactly what her niche would/should be.

Mercedes: PBS used to run “House of Elliott” early Sunday mornings, I’d fix breakfast and sit and eat and watch this fabulous show. It was captivating. When the Brits do it right, they are incomparable.

Sam-A – “they” got rid of Ann Curry because she wouldn’t get with the program – the program of no-news infotainment; five minutes of “real news” every hour, followed by inane happy talk and promotion of movies/music/TV-shows.

Her $10 million severance pay from “Today” is less than half of what the glib Matt Lauer pulls down every year.

I’ve actually started to watch the morning show at CBS instead. More real news.

@Sam A. Yep. If she had a body like Pia Toscano, then we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Real talk. Still, I think she has a chance in r&b if she debuts with a strong ballad and maybe a duet with a well-established superstar.

Things don’t look that much better for Jess on the pop or pop/hop side either. Between Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, etc. the climb seems steeper.

Hopefully, her A&R, marketing and production team will get the job done for her.

My last employer came to a mutual agreement with me as well. They decided that they were not going to pay me beyond a certain date for my work and I agreed not to work for them further without remuneration. I even mutually agreed with my director that I would not shove… never mind.

Not sure how anyone makes it with the traditional record companies anymore. Selling music has got to be tough when so much of it can be had for free.

Clint’s masterwork for me was Outlaw Josey Wales. Morality play, myth, philosophy and love with some gun play and Chief Dan George mixed in. I don’t channel surf anymore but when I did the tuner always stayed on that one. For some reason it always did with The Fifth Element as well. I guess that one falls under the guilty pleasure category with Milla Jovovich running around in a PG13 approved Ace bandage for much of the movie.

Siobhan Magnus calls out Simon Cowell on a radio interview for sleepwalking through her season. “I was on the last season that had Simon,” explains Siobhan. “And it was so obvious to us that mentally, he was already moved on to the next show… He was not present for us. He didn’t care. He wouldn’t even watch the show most of the time! He’d be sitting there leaning back and puffing his cheeks out like ‘Am I done yet?’” Siobhan looks at her watch to illustrate Simon’s boredom.

“It was offensive,” Siobhan reveals. “It was really hard.”

I really don’t get the Ann Curry’s demise. If the same criteria existed for Jane Pauley, Diane Sawyer, Bryant Gumbel, not so much Katie Couric, they would have had short anchor careers.
I’ve read a couple different blogs and the vast majority comments are in her support. I guess she became a victim of our faux-microwave society.

@Mercedes, Today is hard news compared to GMA which is only a promo show for all things Disney and ABC’s entertainment wing. The only reason I even put it on is at :25 or :55 to catch Karen Minton’s forecast at the local station breaks.

I fully agree with Siobhan. Simon had transitioned from brutal honesty to a posterior body orifice by the end of his run and was well compensated to at least ACT interested. Of course full disclosure demands that I admit she was my favorite that year. Good looks, good voice and more than a hint of quirkiness.

Good for Siobhan…I’m happy that somebody from that season had the nerve to call Simon on his behavior. It was obvious to most of the Idol fans that Simon wanted to be elsewhere. Walking ego in a too tight black t-shirt.

Mercedes: I actually like Today, and Matt Lauer. Much more so than the CBS and ABC junk. Except on Sunday mornings, when the CBS Sunday Morning is on – really enjoy that show. I want a balance of news and entertainment when I’m sipping tea and contemplating another long, boring day at the office! I see enough “hard news” on the show and in the AJC to suit every day.

It is becoming more common now to see hits coming from unsigned artists that work with a good production source that produce a YouTube video.

The record companies see a video going viral and hunt the artist to sign them. I think it was Usher who found Beiber and then got him signed with L.A. Reid. But a hit song is paramount to an extended career, even with the immeasurable positive exposure of Idol, X-Factor, The Voice, etc.

Simon once said that he thought Lady Ga Ga was the classic example of the X-Factor – individual, motivated, unpredictable, controversial, sex appeal, etc. But if she would have been on Idol, she would never have survived Dolly Parton, Neil Diamand or Billy Joel or Old Diva’s or 80’s night. Trying to fit her or Katy Perry, etc., into the Idol mold would never have worked,

Jessica also has a Hip-Hop, Rap game-on, that might help her if they pursue it. But to re-release old Diva covers, no matter how well done, won’t give her a lasting foothold in the current music market.

Adele and her advisors decided not to get involved in the British talent shows, before her first “19″ album, as they knew it would “stereotype” her into an image or Judge/show politics that could possibly be more damaging than helpful for a true talent.

Interscope is a force in the industry, as they will spend major money to release to thousands of radio stations, advertise and promote a release. They are rich enough to bury their mistakes and bad decisions, made on songs to promote or ignore in their production and distribution. But Interscope does have a number of current major artists on the label and are well-connected in the business.

Carly Rae Jepsen (call me maybe) took 3rd place in season 5 of Canadian Idol, but her big hit only came after leaving the Idol associate label and signing and working with a different label that opened-up more current, creative ideas. So maybe Kellie could go independent and/or find another deal that may be even better.

OMG OMG! say it aint so..NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..My Heart Cant Go ON! Kellie Pickler lost her recording contract OMG what heartbreaking news..How cruel can the recording industry be? hmmmm..ok..why did she have a recording contract to begin with? You mean she could sing? could have fooled me. again.

Was she in the top 20? I mean really..she could not come CLOSE to the contestants on The Voice who would sing circles around her on their Bad nights. Who on earth is judging these people? On second thought Nevermind dont answer.

Jessica needs a Clive Davis or Berry Gordy jr because they would have her singing different generes. If she goes Fantasia’s route Urban..she wont sell anywhere Near Kelly Clarkson or Country Princess Carrie Underwood. It is what it is R&Bs Urban, nor Gospel, sells like Country, Rock or Pop which is why I had Much respect for Berry Gordy and Clive who did not restrict their artists to one genre.

I guess that time has come and gone. I miss You Berry and Clive. :-(

I think that R&B artists are all over the place nowadays. Even the rap artist have a pop feel. If you listen to Usher, Neo, and C-Breezy, they have some pop, club, r&b, and generally some global sounds on their album. You know, the “commercial” r&b. Maybe there’s a strength for Jess in that commercial r&b realm.

She’s better off on the commericial side of r&b, in which she will have more flexibiilty. Her going the contemporary or neo-soul route will probably hurt her.

Although Ann Curry was a teriffic news anchor, she came across as stiff and rehearsed in live shots and a camera hog during interviews. It was annoying to watch her take up half of an interview segment with her questions rather than let the guest use the time to share their answers. It was as if she felt that she had to prove that she had read the guest’s book by already answering the question while she was asking it rather than just setting the guest up and letting them talk. I feel bad for the way she was dismissed, but no, I will not be sorry to see her go. The only problem is that Savannah Guthrie shares many of the same bad habits. I would really love to see Merideth or Katie come back. They were naturally comfortable on camera and knew how to make their guests feel at ease.

Ann Curry drab? I sure never saw that. Another case of the NBC Suits trashing talent (think Conan) for the almighty dollares/pesos. We already have a GMA, don’t need another. I used to watch Today faithfully until they had Sarah Palin on. Now, I’m voting with my eyes: Bye Bye Bye, Today!!!

No one worked harder that Kellie; her last album was terrific, with much improved, very high quality vocals. The songs, though, just weren’t commercially viable. I’m really sad it didn’t sell.

Jessica won’t make it in the American market sorry to say.. This market is dominated by white/black/Latin and a mix of any or all .

It has nothing to do with singing it’s just what works here. however overseas that’s a different story. Good luck to her hopefully her record deal won’t fall apart or they market her incorrectly.

I also agree with the comments that in hip hop urban you need to be HOT in the looks department or be ready to be controversial . I dont see her connecting with that.

In regards to Carly Rae Jepsen scooter Braun is behind her but as of yet his main star Justin has already placed several hits into the top of iTunes while Carly is still everywhere with her one hit song. Makes me wonder if scooter made a mistake not looking for a teen princess to follow in the steps of his prince JB instead of a woman who is capitalizing on ONE song?

G, I agree with your take on what kind of songs Jessica should start with (although I probably won’t be buying any – just don’t care much for the whole pop-princess thing). And I think it’s good for her to be signed by Jimmy’s company, Interscope.

After all, on Idol, it was always Jimmy who called her out when Jessica tried songs or outfits that were too old for her.

And Kellie will probably get signed by a smaller but more Nashville-focused label.
