Carrie Underwood supports gay marriage

Carrie Underwood. AP

Carrie Underwood. AP

Carrie Underwood rarely, if ever, gets in trouble for words that come out of her mouth.

While trying to break in to the British market, she told the U.K. Independent she supported gay marriage.

“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love and want to marry,” Underwood told the Independent. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”

This led to some backlash on some news sites, including Taste of Country.

“My church is also Non-Denominational, however right is right. You cannot argue with the Bible. I love how these big stars twist the word of God to suit them. Sorry, but I’ve lost most of my respect for Carrie on this one,” wrote Kendi Bergdoll.

“If you can not argue with the Bible,” responded Tom Jessie. “Then you as a women should have no public opinion! And as such you should delete your Facebook and any other social media accounts now to follow the Bible literally!”

In an AP interview Tuesday, Underwood was uncomfortable revisiting the topic.

“I was asked a difficult question in the last five minutes of an interview and I answered it the best way I knew how, and after that I do what I do and I love making music and I generally try to stay out of any kind of controversy,” she told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday.

Meanwhile, her recent No. 1 song “Good Girl” is the top-selling downloaded “Idol” track of the week, moving 46,000 copies for a total of 1.08 million. Her current album “Blown Away” has sold 569,000 copies to date.

At an “Idols” press conference for the upcoming tour, Phillip Phillips said he’s recovering from kidney surgery he had last week:

“I’m good. I’m not 100 [percent], but I’m good,” he says. “I’m doing a lot better than expected, so that’s a good thing.”

First and foremost who cares? Why must every single artist be asked about gay rights? Be it music or film it seems like that question is asked in every single interview. How hard is it to say, “I have my own beliefs on the matter and its really none of anybodies business, next question please.”

You haters out there who oppose our Commander-in-Chief on his social agenda are all hypocrites.

You know if you had to climb into the same marital bed each night with Michelle, gay-marriage would eventually start to seem like a not-so-bad idea to you, too.

Until this thread plays out, I think I’m going to be spending some quality time in the top-secret, undisclosed, well armed, highly-secure but oh-so-comfy bunker.

We’re adding a new wing, with a large master suite, master bath with jetted tub large enough for myself and the lovely & gracious Mrs. Rickster, and a private media room with a 70″ high-def LCD screen & projector, surround sound and one of those old-timey carnival-type popcorn carts. (I love those things.)

Plus. we’re adding a new geothermal/solar/wind hybrid power plant.

Behind the scenes of the Idols Tour. Lots of comments from the finalists – including Phillip and the best singer of the last 50 years (or is it the best singer ever? I get confused.)

Thanks, Rickster! That was a great video and it was good to see the contestants with the pressure off, just being themselves. Loved it.

I read the article with disbelief. It’s amazing how people say “I will no longer purchase this person’s music,” or “I’ve lost respect” for this person. We all have a right to believe and stand behind whatever we want to. I’m pretty sure those same people dissing on another’s beliefs has things going on with themselves that others would probably have trouble with.

At the risk of opening up the Pandora’s box from yesterday…

Pitchy “We all have a right to believe and stand behind whatever we want to.

I agree, wholeheartedly.

We can believe and stand by whatever we want. But when anyone – myself included – expresses an opinion toward that end, people who hold a differing opinion have every right to disagree with or challenge that opinion. We can’t simply state an opinion and expect others to blindly agree with it.

If the person happens to be a celebrity… they have no right to expect that fans who disagree with them won’t stop buying their records, going to their movies, etc.

Facts are facts and can’t be challenged. The interpretation of facts, (Global Warming/Climate change, for example) however, are fair game as are opinions. Just because a person has a different opinion, that doesn’t mean they aren’t entitled to hold it.

Using myself as an example, I vehemently disagree with some of the opinions and political positions Tom Hanks has publicly stated. He uses his celebrity to push those causes or beliefs that are important to him. Rather than calling him names, or demanding he shut up or stating that he shouldn’t have that opinion, I simply won’t go see or buy any more of his movies. (Which stinks… ’cause he has made some good ones.)

That’s my opinion – one that is likely to be disagreed with.

As one of her biggest supporters during American Idol, and since, I have to be honest and say she has really let me down. It would have been better for her to do what so many others should do, and have done, just keep quiet. I no longer will support her in any way, buy any of her music, and watch any show that she is on. This is going to hurt her big time, as country music frowns on this in a major way. She may have to cross over into strictly pop now just to stay on top. I see a downhill slide coming for her. Just ask J.D. Lang and Chely Wright.

Why are people so ignorant. Let’s forget about what the bible says for a minute here regarding gay activities and look towards common sense.
If the world started out with two men or two women and they were gay how in the hell would the continue to create? Two men together can’t create a life and neither can two women. Life would end, duhhh come on.

MyPatootie, while you’re certainly entitled to your beliefs, I have to point out a flaw. Carrie merely showed support for equality, that is a long way from coming out herself as k.d. Lang and Chely Wright have done.

Not that I wouldn’t appoint myself as head of the welcoming committee and hand her her toaster, but well, that’s definitely not the case. She’s married to a terrific man and happy. I’m glad for her.

As for any loss of her fanbase, well, she’s introducing Blown Away in the UK and I’m sure she’ll gain new fans here as well…

Oh, my. What a shame. What if we quit speaking on this blog because we disagree with someone’s opinion? There would be no blog. I am in the minority here, due to my political views, but my goodness, I would not deny any of this blog family the right to their opposite opinions or love them less because we happen to disagree. I don’t get it. I really don’t get it.

G, agree. I have been an Elvis fan since childhood (and that’s a long time). However, the more I have learned about him and beliefs/behaviors, the less I know I have in common with him. But, I still went to Graceland and Sun Studio last week to visit his shrines. His contribution is not diminished because I hold opposite views of life and politics.
