BET’s ‘The Game’ finds replacement for Tia Mowry’s character

With Tia Mowry leaving BET’s “The Game,” the network has found a new actress to play a new character: Lauren London, who has been in films such as “ATL” and “Madea’s Big Happy Family.”

TV Line broke the news. London will play Kiera, a former child star currently in a “Cosby”-esque sitcom, for the sixth season.

Losing its biggest name could be a major blow to a sitcom that has been losing ratings steam since it moved to BET and Atlanta last year.  Opening at a monstrous 7.7 million viewers in early 2011, “The Game” was pulling in around 2 to 2.5 million viewers in the second half of the most recent season.

The show is still seeking a male lead opposite London who will play an educated, all-star running back. Mowry (Melanie) played the wife of Derwin (Pooch Hall).

London nabbed her first major film role in 2006 as the the romantic lead opposite T.I. on the film “ATL.” She was Turtle’s girlfriend on “Entourage” in 2007.  She has also been in films “This Christmas,” “Next Day Air,” “I Love You, Beth Cooper” and “Madea’s Big Happy Family.” She and rapper Lil Wayne have a son.

Seriously, please just end The Game. It hasnt been the same since it was on UPN, or whatever the station is called, and it won’t be. I don’t blame Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall for leaving either!

It’s Game Over. Girl Melanie is gone, Derwin is gone and the story line is just wack now.

I may have to watch it now just to see Lauren!

I AM however disappointed that she would have sex, let alone a baby, with Lil Wayne though.

im so over her, she’s a horrible actress. They should have gotten Megan Good or expanded LaShuntae Heckard a GA native’s role. I’m a huge fan of THE GAME, but it has its lows and highs like any other show. people tune in for the drama and it was lacking substantial drama this season.

While the show has certainly jumped ship, a new set of characters may be just the thing the writers need to breathe new life into the show. It would have been nice for them to introduce the new characters before getting rid of Derwin and Melanie but I am hopeful that they will do guest spots to completely end their storyline.

They ruined the show by trying to recreate the wheel instead of picking up where they left off at CW.

Business is business…bottom line.
Most importantly, we should support the opportunities that Black Americans are now having to perform in TV shows, because we didn’t always have this option. If you don’t like the cast, you don’t have to watch the show. Acting out and saying negative things towards another Black American actress who has done absolutely nothing wrong to you is foolish and it doesn’t make sense. Give her chance to show if she is going to work out or not. DANG!

While they are replacing people are they replacing the writers and directors? Bring K. Grammer back, he brought drama and a real story line. I couldn’t believe they made Malik a drug addict, Tasha a man-less, clueless, reaching for any man, woman. What happened to her being strong and powerful? And bringing Brandy on was good idea but damn did she have to be so ghetto!

Please, please, please let the next season be better. But I will miss “Med-School” and Derwin.

P.S. No more Pulp fiction scripts (that was a hot mess!)

Please don’t bring Brandy back. Her character was so sterotypical. She and Jason have zero chemistry. Bring Debbie Allen on as the produccer/director. She did amazing things with A Different World. As long as Tasha Mack and Malik stays, I’ll stay tuned

The Game is setting Lauren (and her soon to be named co-star) up to fail. The show has already lost a significant amount of its fan base during the move from UPN (now CW) to BET. Then ratings dropped more due to the lack of interesting story lines and direction. From the comments above and in previous stories, fans have stated that the show will be nothing without “Girl” Melanie and Derwin. Their relationship was the foundation of the show. The show’s producers and directors are now putting Lauren in a template that is suppose to reflect the relationship between Melanie and Derwin. They are setting her up to fail. As talented as Lauren may be, I don’t think her skills are quite strong enough to help carry the entire show.

I prefer to see the dynamic roles that all of the characters can play…In life we all play dynamic roles and it’s great to see that on screen!

Some suggestions to increase ratings….better scripts, better producers, better directors, and better acting, and more guest star appearances will definitely keep me tuned in to the show! Last season was not The Game’s best season by far..although it was good to see Brandy again!

They have really SCREWED UP this show! It used 2 be the HOTTEST show on TV! I loved every character, the stories, the excitment, the drama etc. It was like they where REAL ppl to us. What happened? The writers sucked, they didnt continue where they left off in season one, Malik a junkie? Hurting Tee Tee by screwing his gyrl? They took away all Tasha’s dignity, pride, respect, power, ect., She’s not strong anymore, Melanie a lost cause, sleeping wit anybody that wants her, Kelly a TV loser, Britt Britt grown & bad ass hell, just all messed up! What where u guys thinkin? I believe it was sabatoged by the writers. The actors/actresses should have said HELL NO! Shame on ALL of u for allowing this ONCE UPON A TIME GREAT SHOW to dwindle down to ashes..SMH…NOw, I will NOT watch it again…U just lost a loyal fan 2 the show.

Oh, and one more thing, lose Brandy, she’s horrible, her and Jason Pitts have no chemistry! They work terrible together as a couple! They don’t even look right together. Now I have to watch the old shows. Glad I have the seasons. Maybe you writers should go watch those to get an ideal on what u need to be doing.

Jessica, why must opinions directed at Lauren London or The Game be considered non-supportive of Black Americans? I, too lost respect for Lauren over her personal decisions but she is an adult and must live her life as she see fit. My role in her life is neither to like nor dislike her so I reserve my full opinion of her decisions. The Game lost me over the extensive Janae baby mother drama and lack of cohesive storylines. I am a black american and has grown weary of the mentatility that we must support black shows or never speak ill about a black actor or show. Bad quality is just that – bad. Poor acting and content is colorless so we should stray away from “not supporting black . A strong story will draw viewers and the creator’s goal should be transcending audience color or race. JMHO

Know when to say "when"

June 21st, 2012

And the when is now….The Game has been playing the last seconds of the fourth quarter. And has lost. Just lick the wounds and keep it moving. The final episode of last season for me didn’t leave a lot of open questions like Girlfriends which didn’t receive a proper send off. But another full 10-13 episode season of The Game would have made them wish they’d stopped at what we already know and expect….Tasha has finally found the love that she’s always looked for a deserved, Melanie will finally feel complete with successfully conquering her dream, with the love of her life supporting her and rightfully so, Jason and Chardonnay – well I liked their twisted love, we don’t need to witness anymore drama there and finally Malik – he’s back in his own skin and that’s who he really is. Let it go, please.

When White Americans discuss and give reviews for shows, the focus is on their careers and well they can perform. Black Americans really do get emphasize more than they need to on what someone is doing in there personal life. BUSINESS IS BUSINESS!
Troubled white actors/actress continue to get offered major roles with big payouts no matter how well or dysfunctional their personal lives are going…and the shows are super successful!
Yes we all have personal opinions about everything. That is only human and normal.
We can all still have an opinion and not disrespect another Black American.
Would you want someone to focus on your personal life in the midst of being offered a new job opportunity? Really???? SMH!!!
Lauren and family is good…Trust!!!!

@Jessica, who care what color she is? Lauren is a horrible actress. And she’s bi-racial, not black.

This show has lost it’s appeal. Game over is right. Just end it now. She will bring nothing to the show. And Single Ladies, where do I begin. I actually like the storyline, but the acting is horrifiic! They only have one actor on the show that can act. The rest of them are terrible. Lisa Raye is too old for her role. She looks like she’s hanging out with her daughters, not friends. I really wanted to support this show, but I can’t take the horrible acting.

If down the line they see were they could bring them back of course bring back the show, but it will not be the same without them…….

The Melanie and Derwin story line ran it’s course once they got married. It seems the writers had no idea what to do with their characters anymore. The quality also suffered from the two year hiatus, as well as the production moving to Atlanta. I’ll see if the new characters can breath any new life into the show, because the last two years have been mediocre at best.

What I would like to have seen was have them bring in Lauren London/whomever they choose combo in as a new couple with a new storyline. They could have focused on Jason, Malik and Tosha while we get to know the new couple and be introduced to their issues. It would make better sense.

Trying to get the audience to buy off on a *new* Melanie and Derwin, if that is in fact their plan, will be a tough sell to an already dwindling fan base.

I wonder what guy they will find to play opposite of Loudon. Imagine the scent of lil Waynes balls on her lips every time they have to do a love scene. His agent need to request an HIV test the way Janet did to Tupac in Poetic Justice. If London would lay down with Wayne she would do anyone.

A baby with Lil’ Wayne? Somethin’ aint right with this woman? I mean, REALLY. Black women always talk about how they want a “good,” “responsible,” “strong” man…yawn. Then they run to the first, pants-down-to-his-thighs thug they can see, especially if he has money. And they deliberately get pregnant to try to get some of the dude’s money. The result: another freakin’ fatherless black child. Sad. Lauren, you fool. All that $$$ chasin’ and you’ll soon be taking him to court for not paying for food for the baby. Save your TV money, Lauren.

@SeeMe. I agree! Women usually will choose the bad boy, the hip-hop rap artist, trouble maker, unemployed guy, etc. more so than often because of the attention she’s getting from them vs. the nice BORING guy. lol The old saying, “nice guys finish LAST” applies to this. Nice guys normally lack the aggression and fear being rejected so most women don’t want a “nice” guy when they are young. Eventually nice guys still finish last, but at least they FINISH.

I remember when BET could barely pay their employees. The dollar crunch is still obviously being felt in the story-writer dept. This isn’t the only show where the writing is AWFUL but it stands out a lot more because we can see the drop off from when this show switched networks. Additionally, the production for this show is awful. The film editing and music leave a lot to be desired. The cast is still strong enough to survive without Pooch and Mowry, the latter of which was becoming more annoying than ever (probably more due to the pitiful writing though). They need to expound on Malik’s relationship with Jenna, create some tension for Tasha with Pookie and Rick Fox, 86 Brandy and leave Jason Pitts character open to in-and-out flirting/relationships with guest actresses and maybe even insert a throwback fling in with his ex-wife, Kelly. Tee-Tee needs a love interest and maybe have some of the football players get sick from his chicken wingz! Oh yeah, Omari Hardwick for a possible love interest opposite Lauren. He’s a Georgia boy and would probably enjoy an opportunity to come back home to Atlanta for work and closeness to family.

@ATLPeach…African-Americans survived slavery but the scars of the sexual abuse endured by our female ancestors, is exemplified in the various hues of our skintones. Simply put you, too, are bi-racial.! That is if you weren’t born in Africa. Now that the social mores have shifted bi-racial couples are common. So don’t believe that because your skintone is dark that GrandPappy Jeb mix won’t show up somewhere down the line.!!!!

BET tried to make the show more black and it’s writer’s added elements that were “stereotypical’ black. It’s entertainment, so that was to be expected, but it was too much. Not really what the longtime fans of the show wanted. They should have kept Kelly on the show and not changed that character so much. They messed Melanie up by making her a different person also. After the wedding, the money changed the character in a major way. Malik is a whole other story. Did they have to turn up the dial on the sex to 1,000? No…too many changes to mention, which were not all for the best.

I signed the petition to get the Game on BET, but kinda figured they’d eff it up eventually.

The character descriptions sound like Melanie & Derwin knockoffs. BET, you can create completely new characters but only IF you get decent writers and storylines to complement them. You had a better chance of keeping viewers with the current writers if you’d kept the characters we already love onscreen.

BET should’ve paid Tia Mowry & Pooch Hall what they’re worth. I’m not crazy about Brandy/Jason (although I’m happy for Brandy that she’s working) and on the finale they didn’t even explain why Jason cut her loose in the first place. Horrible editing.

I’ll give Lauryn London a shot, but not holding my breath and it’s not even because of her acting ability. It’s because BET knows how to screw up a good thing better than almost any other network.

BET – take some of the money you refused to pay Tia & Pooch and hire a brand new writing staff, make sure none of them are related to the current BET executives, either.
