Phillip Phillips to make first post-surgery concert appearance July 4

Michael Becker/FOX

Michael Becker/FOX

Phillip Phillips, currently in recovery from kidney surgery, will make his first public concert appearance on July 4 for the annual PBS special “A Capitol Fourth.”

This is just over three weeks after his surgery and two days before the “Idols Live” tour starts in Detroit July 6. The tour hits Duluth and Gwinnett Arena August 5.

“Smash” actress Megan Hilty and “The Voice” Season 1 winner Javier Colon (remember him?) are part of the concert as well on top of Josh Turner, Kool & The Gang, Kelli O’Hara, Russell Watson and the National Symphony Orchestra.

- The press reports for number of auditioners for “Idol” this season are down over past years. Los Angeles had maybe 2,500. San Antonio and Charlotte both have estimates at around 6,000 each. Maybe we really are running out of potentially aspiring singers. Or they’re being diverted to “The X Factor” and “The Voice”?

RoHo….I remember Javier Colon very well, and his vocals will embarrass pp to shame. If anything, pp will learn a thing or two.

Like I said before about the low Idol audition turnouts, the message has been sent to viewers and future contestants. If you are not a WGWG or a male country singer, your chances of winning Idol is non-existent. Idol has changed from the days of Kelly Clarkson and Big Ruben. A precedence has been set, and from here on out we will continue to see the same results.

Idol will still have millions of viewers next season, but believe that those numbers will show a steady decline also.

I also concur that non-VGWG should seek other avenues / shows if they want a fair shot at winning. Settling for only exposure on these shows is overrated. Every season does not produce a JHud, Daughtry or Adam Lambert.

Wonder if Phillips first song on the PBS show will be “Some Days are Diamonds, Some Days are Stones?” Seriously, I find it ironic and rather humorous that a guy who just had surgery for kidney stones and a guy with the name Colon are on the same program.

I just listened to Michael Lynche’s release and liked it. He was one that I really liked on Season 9, although I was in the distinct minority. It is nothing special, but nice to listen to. R&B really struggles, and I hate that fact. I used to be a huge r&b fan, but there’s nothing out there right now. Brian McKnight has faded, Luther is dead, there are no more like them, anyway.

@Harriett. Agree 100% that “good to listen to” R&B is scarce in the market today. Kem and Eric Benet have some excellent smoothed-out tunes. I often stream stations on my IPhone. One of my favorites is Choice (London, England). They have a nice smooth r&b set that starts around 7pm eastern time.

I remember Mike Lynche. I liked his style too, but I knew his time was limited.

Harriett, I liked Michael Lynche!

I meant to pop in yesterday and say hi but I got busy. Hi! :-D And Sam, you taught me something I never knew about a Beatles song… I always thought that the medley with Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight, and The End was one song. (Blended together in Bohemian Rhapsody several-songs-within-a-song style.)

Interesting, Rodney, about the auditioner numbers. I do think the drop is probably due to a growing perception that you can’t win the show if you’re not white and male. I hope these declining numbers will be just another push toward changing the voting system for next year…

I don’t watch the Voice, but I know who Javier is and I agree with G that he’ll sing absolute circles around Phil. I am surprised, actually, that Phil was able to get a gig like this, but I guess it’s because he’s the winner. I still think once the glow of his win fades, so will his popularity. We’ll hear from him for a year or so, but another couple of Idol seasons down the road, we’ll be trying to remember “now which WGWG won in 2012?” Just my prediction… ;-)

Hi y’all,

I think the problem we’re having is a disconnect with that’s currently “hot” on the radio vs the quaint notion of Idol. I love the show, and have since it started…insert cheesy Kelly praise comment here. The thing is, I get why Phil won…he sounded current and his style fits to what’s in now with Mumford and Sons, Foster The People and Gotye type music. It’s not a knock on Jessica or Joshua…but they’re more of an “older style.” The artists I’ve listed might not have the best voices (they don’t, imo) but they’re good musicians with catchy songs. Phil, even in pain, was entertaining. I’m looking forward to see him do promo when he’s healed.

And for all it’s shortcomings, Idol is still the gold standard when it comes to singing shows. The cheesy show with a very basic premise hold the story. Early Idol was about winning, but it’s now about the journey. I’ve watched all, The Voice, X Factor, Duets, and even tried Nashville Star. Idol still reigns over them, their track record still stands. All the hoopla from X Factor about Melanie Amaro, where the heck is she, hanging out with Javier Colon?

In two seasons of The Voice, I’m already pretty much done with it…mostly because they made the show about the judges, but the judges were annoying this past season. Duets? Well, if not for Kelly, I’d have checked out already. I’m looking forward to X Factor because well, it could be some interesting television…

K&CF: I agree with your every word except the last sentence – I don’t think I could watch one more XF show – it was that terrible to me.

I too get totally why Px2 won, and ended up glad he did. Do I love today’s radio stations and music, hell no! But I’ve grown to like some of it, some a lot. Mostly individual songs, not complete groups like my beloved Beatles. But I like some Maroon 5/Coldplay/Fray/et al, even actually love a few of their songs. Anda couple of cross-over country songs, ‘If I die young” and “Need you now” – I love, even though I hate country music. I long for the days of the 60’s/70’s radio, but have a carful of CD’s to get by, and still have Kelly played lots on the radio.

bknsty14, is the the one with Gordon Ramsay? If so, I can’t deal with him. But I do enjoy Top Chef and Iron Chef.

Sam-A, I’m only looking to watch XF out of curiosity. I’m definitely a LONG way from committing to watching it more than once! But I completely understand why you’re done with it. L. A. Reid was annoying with putting everyone else down to prop his team. As far as music on the radio these days, I agree with you. It’s what I call the “disposable” tunes. A lot of artists, I’ll like a song or two, but not a whole album…I find that rare, for me, these days.

I like a couple of those too. I watch A LOT of cooking shows. I just respect people that can cook that well. All of Gordon Ramsey’s. So many people seem to hate him, but at the end of the day he seems like a really good guy. And really giving of his time. Sure, a lot of it is self promotion, but he seems to have a big heart. I’ve got about 10 cooking shows on my DVR.

That’s my opinion as well, he was able to project an “identity” on the show that separated him from the standard Idol Mold contestant that tries to cover the Old Diva or Old Stars of the 70’s/80’s that this show encourages them to do. He was not the best singer in terms of range and dynamics, but has his own wheelhouse of types of music that he can project as a current, relevant artist.

While PP is just now taking his first breath in a post-Idol career, I think he can sell some tickets. “Home” has already done well, and that is what he is Likely to sing on July 4th – I don’t think he will be doing the National Anthem. That is better left to someone else, maybe from Glee, since Jessica or Hollie or Elise won’t be there. And Steven Tyler should be banned from ever singing it again

(bits From Mj) Haley Reinhart and David Cook will be suiting up to play in the Taco Bell All Star Legends & Celebrity Softball game on ESPN. at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO.The game will be televised by ESPN approximately 10:30 p.m. ET immediately following the State Farm Home Run Derby on Monday, July 9th. Oh, KCF, I forgot about Didi that season! She was another of my faves.

Sam, yes, I thought Katie really got a raw deal from the judges. She was so good, and they were so weird and wishy-washy with her, and it completely messed her up. I loved how near the end of her run, she either sang or said something kind of defiant that made the point that they were impossible to please. (What was that?)

KCF, and Sam at 3:40, I’m with y’all on how I feel about music today, except I miss 70’s-80’s and I’m ***NOT*** glad Phil won. I like some of today’s stuff, similar to what Sam mentioned, and there are even songs I love. I just think it’s not the same. I miss the days when singers didn’t only sound good because of Auto Tune.
To me it’s sad when a weak-voiced, melody-less Phil is the gold standard….

I’ll definitely watch XF, but I really, really hate LA Reid’s personality. He’s a jacka**. (sorry for the bad language. But I dislike him THAT much.) But I am curious about Britney, and I loved that the best singer won last time. So count me in, at least until it drives me away!

I think that it’s moreso the majority of the voting mainstream likes or is comfortable with artists such as Mumford & Sons, etc. as to who they will support on Idol. There’s other types of music out there that is just as popular if not more, such as Kem, Lil Wayne, Drake, Trey Songz, etc. So, the burden of the “problem” is moreso on the majority mainstream voters and what they like to listen to…..not just the popularity of the music itself.

Trust me. If the successful r&b / pop artist of today had to go through Idol to make it, they wouldn’t even make it to the top 24. If they were lucky enough to make it to the top 10, they would be gone the first week. Modern R&B/Pop artist do not fit the “Idol” format. It is what it is…….

G: You’re actually barking up the wrong tree. Obviously the Idol audience votes for the type of music they like. This year we liked Phillip and Jessica.

The type of person who likes the other stuff obviously doesn’t watch Idol, or else this particular type of singer might do better. So Idol is giving us, the audience, what we enjoy listening to, obviously.

Perhaps someone should create a hiphop/gospel/blues contest show, and those who complain so mightily about Idol could watch that show instead. (I’d be skipping that one – not my kind of music).
Personally, I’d like to see a Rock&Roll type contest, allowing both bands and single singers. Doing real, authentic rock – wow that’d be good.

You know the old saw, “You can’t please everyone”, and Idol has tried, but obviously there’s a group that isn’t pleased every single year.

Jenny, anytime a girl shows up with personality/different voice on Idol (Katy, Siobhan) the irritants also known as the judges do their best to eff these girls over. They come with impossible demands and the girls, eager to please, follow tough demands nobody else gets. Eventually the viewers are as confused as the girls, and nobody votes for them.

Sam-A, if you go far enough uo in Finland, they have summer that lasts 3 months, with a never setting sun.

Finland, like the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway), is crazy about celebrating midsummer. Looking in my Swedish Calendar, the “Sommarsolståndet” (summer solstice) is Thursday, Midsummer Eve on Friday, and the holy day itself, Midsommardagen, on Saturday.

Four day holiday for most people in the Nordic Countries!

G

June 20th, 2012

@Sam-A: I’ll start by what I DO agree with you on, and that’s a Rock contest. Preferably a rock band contest, but I think that’s been done before. I don’t believe it worked out too well, but with a little re-packaging, anything’s possible. I’m all in for that sort of thing.

Actually, there is only ONE winner on Idol. That was PP, and the majority voted for him, not Jessica. Don’t try and slide her in the winners circle, as though there was some type of moral victory that actually meant something. The “majority” mainstream voted for PP….not Jesica.

R&B and so forth has been represented on a show for generations………….it’s called Showtime at the Apollo. That brand has launched some of the biggest careers in history.

The bottom line today is that Idol is not a one size fits all type of show. I believe it started out that way, but over time, it has morphed into “American WGWG Idol”. It’s not just about R&B and the likes not being included, but it’s about EVERYTHING & EVERYONE that’s not enveloped in a WGWG package, not being represented in the winners circle.

If Hollie won……………I’m not barking up any trees.

Since when is Carrie a “Christian Singer” (3rd sentence)

Carrie Underwood sees gay marriage backlash

The Associated Press
9:16 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2012

LONDON — Carrie Underwood wants to be a musician, not a politician.

The American country music star is dealing with a backlash, however, after telling British newspaper The Independent that she supported gay marriage.

Underwood added that her church was gay-friendly and it wasn’t her job to judge people — comments that ignited online anger against her from those against gay marriage.

The Christian singer tells AP she tries to stay out of such controversy but knows it’s unavoidable.

Underwood says “no matter what happens in your life, something you do, wear, say, sing whatever — somebody somewhere is probably not going to like it too well.”

Underwood wants instead to concentrate on launching her debut U.K. album release, “Blown Away,” and performing at her first U.K concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Thursday.

Rickster

June 20th, 2012

Two things…

1. If Carrie wants to concentrate on “launching her her debut U.K album release” – she shouldn’t comment on things other than her album.

2. Just because some people feel differently about an issue than you, Sam-A… that doesn’t make them (or a certain part of their anatomy in case that’s what you were referring to) a bunch of “pinched-tight a-holes in this world.”

.

Sam-A

Rickster: Each to his/her own opinion – and Carrie is certainly entitled to her own – and “fans” have no right to act stupidly toward her because of it. Just don’t buy her records, but they can stop dissing her for her opinion. She was asked – not standing on a soapbox, so leave the girl alone. As she said, her Church welcomes everyone and she feels the same. I always think those who show their anger in the name of God are the most unreligious & unChristian people on earth!

Rickster

June 20th, 2012

I’m not saying that Carrie isn’t entitled to her opinion. But if she knows an opinion will alienate some of her fans… why voice it? Aren’t they entitled to express their opinions?

Or is that just reserved for some folks?

As for dissing someone for their opinion… isn’t that what you just did by calling those people “pinched-tight a-holes” and “the most unreligious & unChristian people on earth”?

There are too many people in this world who think that the only opinions that should be expressed are the ones that agree with theirs. Name calling just makes them look even less tolerant than they are.

I just wish people (and I’m not saying anyone here) wouldn’t put so much stock into celebrity opinions. the only difference between them and us is the platform they have to speak on, but their intelligence level of what they are talking about is probably no different than most of ours. They think because they’re in the spotlight anyone actually cares what they think. They are entertainers. Just entertain me and keep your opinion to yourselves. (KCF, I stole your hearts)

I believe that’s actually love and acceptance.

I agree with bknsty14 that too many people put too much emphasis on what “celebrities” think or do. They’re entitled to their opinion – as is anyone else.

But when the use their celebrity status to push a certain agenda or cause near and dear to their heart or state an opinion (Dixie Chicks, anyone?) – they have no right to not have their opinions challenged and they have no right to not face any consequences because of it.

Sam-A, I don’t think that people aren’t saying that Carrie can’t have her opinion. I think they’re saying they don’t agree with her opinion – which they are certainly entitled to do.

Their opinion is just as valid to them is as Carrie’s is to her as mine is to me and yours is to you.

But calling people names like ”a-holes,” “hate filled,” “pinched-tight a-holes” and “the most unreligious & unChristian people on earth” is demeaning to them and reflects much more poorly on the person doing the name calling – and less poorly on them.

But that’s just my opinion – to which I am entitled. Yours (to which you are entitled as well) may (and likely will) be different. :-)

I agree that we disagree. We have agreed and disagreed many times over the past few years, and I’m betting we’ll continue to do so.

But why would this statement “inflame” anyone?:

Underwood added that her church was gay-friendly and it wasn’t her job to judge people — comments that ignited online anger against her from those against gay marriage.

Why would anyone be angry because she simply said her church is “gay-friendly” and “it wasn’ther job to judge people”?????? Apparently they became ugly online against her for this inocuous remark. How much more “unchristian” can you get?! These are the people who think anyone not agreeing with them on issues like gays, pro choice, et al are evil/wrong, and are trying to control those people into their own narrow visions.

Sam and G from earlier – my dear twin Sam, I must respectfully disagree with this: “Obviously the Idol audience votes for the type of music they like. This year we liked Phillip and Jessica.” Hmmm… I’m part of the Idol audience, but where PP’s concerned I’m most definitely not part of that “we”!! ;-)

And I do think that, with the exception of those like you and D who truly liked Phil for his music… many audience members didn’t vote for the type of music they liked. The squeeing herds (NOT y’all) voted for the cute boy. That’s why I think he’ll quickly be forgotten. They’ll soon be busy focusing on the next cute boy of the moment.

I must agree with G that the “problem” is the type of music the voting mainstream is comfortable with. When did America’s majority taste become so bland? I know there were some here who genuinely did like Phil’s “singing”, but I think some of the mainstream needs to step out of their “cute-boy popularity contest” mentality and realize that the winner of a singing contest should be able to, oh, I don’t know… sing well? ;-)

I guess I’m just not very mainstream. I know vanilla ice cream is the most popular flavor, but I personally hate it.

I think Phil is the Miley Cyrus of Idol. Not a very good singer, but that fact is well disguised, and the rabid herds of fans don’t care anyway.

Jenny

And I think Carrie should be able to say what she wants without rude and hateful backlash. People can certainly disagree if they want, as long as they’re **respectful** and not nasty. She wasn’t nasty to anyone; why is it necessary to be nasty when responding to her?

But in reality that’ll never happen, and she has the best attitude that she can about it… the realization that no matter what you do or say, there is always going to be someone who doesn’t like it.

To me, her comments reflect unconditional love and acceptance, and isn’t that the Christian way?

Well, Sam-A, you just about made my day! Thanks for the lovely sentiment! :)

I don’t put too much stock into celebrity opinions and had never personally considered how Carrie felt about the issue. To me, her comments were surprising and welcomed. It’s nice to see someone show acceptance to all. It’s disappointing to see that she’s getting backlash for this, but in all honesty, I figured it was a matter of time…and I’m surprised it took this long. I admire that she stuck to her statement and did not apologize for it.

My hope is that someday this won’t be such an issue and people are judged more for the content of their character than what goes on in their bedroom. Until then, I’ll continue to live the life I was given to the best of my abilities and make the best of any situation. I’m a long way from marriage, but it would be nice to have that option. Why can’t a hardworking, tax-paying, law-abiding citizen not have the same rights?

But anyway, Jenny, I liked Phil, but I’m pretty sure it’s not ’cause he was the “cute boy” of the season. If that were the case, I think Colton should have done better! Jessica had, to me, a lot of potential, but something happened as the show went on and she lost her connection with the audience….as evidenced by her getting the lowest number of votes twice. I get the frustration, but well, Lee broke that mold about singing well years ago! ;)

How much more “unchristian” can you get?! These are the people who think anyone not agreeing with them on issues like gays, pro choice, et al are evil/wrong, and are trying to control those people into their own narrow visions

It happens on both sides, Sam-A.

If you don’t like a certain person’s politics, you’re racist.

If you think the government has no business telling a church that it has to do something that goes against its beliefs, you’ve declared a “war on women.”

Think the EPA oversteps it bounds and you want people to die from dirty water & polluted air.

Want to reform Medicaid or oppose a nationalized healthcare plan, and you’re pictured rolling granny off the cliff in her wheelchair.

And to top it all off, you’re insulted and called vile hateful names.

It happens on both sides.

I’ve not read the comments that have been put forth in response to Carrie’s. So I can’t comment on what was said.

I believe in tolerance… up to a certain point. But when does tolerance end and giving up the beliefs you hold dear end?

Do I let someone kill me, my wife & daughter because I believe in the sanctity of life and don’t want to kill anyone else? Or do I kill the SOB that wants to hurt me and my family because I value their lives more than his?

If people expect me to have to listen to their opinions… shouldn’t they extend me the same courtesy?

Again, just my opinion.

Luckily, we can all express our feelings and hope they’re taken in the context they’re given.

Thankfully, we tend to be more respectful in our disagreements, too!

(And I’m hurt beyond words that I’m not your favorite, Sam-A) :-)

KCF, sorry… I should’ve listed you with Sam and D as one who liked PP for his music! (Most of his fans on this blog did… I didn’t mean to wrongly paint anyone else with the cute-boy-voter brush! It’s just that I saw *quite* the opposite in real life.)

And I admire Carrie greatly for stating her feelings, sticking to it, and not apologizing. (She has nothing to apologize for, anyway!) And for realizing that the nasty backlash is sadly just the way of the world. This just proves once again that she truly is the lovely person that she’s always appeared to be.

But Carrie looks her usual lovely self.

Rickster, you were up there until I made the mistake of calling you Ricky a few years back – still smarting from that tongue-lashing!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUCH. Haven’t done that one again! But was very touched once awhile back (I think during an Fword bombardment) when you actually invited me to the secret place with your “hole in the wall” gang!

And yeah, Lee did break the mold of a good (or at least in-tune) singer winning. Although strangely, he bothers me the least of the WGWGs. Phil and Scotty bother me the most.

And David Cook shouldn’t even count as a WGWG… sure, he is one, but that’s not why he won. In his season, the WGWG advantage didn’t exist yet. He brought something new and different to the table, and won solely on his own merits, not because of the herd-voters.

I think the WGWG/popularity contest problem started to some extent with Taylor, and really came to light with Kris Allen. I guess because Kris’ win was so blatantly r i d i c u l o u s, and made me really concerned for America’s taste. When presented with uber-talented Adam, who possessed an incredible level of talent that Idol rarely, rarely finds…. America picked the boring, comfortable, safe, dime-a-dozen guy instead? I truly don’t think I’ll ever understand why….

Jenny: Adam lost because he was too “out there” for most of America. And he got more and more outrageous as the season went on. If he’d just cooled his dress/makeup/hair a bit, he might have won. Should have won – far superior singer, though I did dread that scream he had to throw into almost every song. I guess that’s why I was so impressed with “Mad World” – he left the scream out, much to the betterment of the song.

Anyway, he’s got a much bigger, or at least more visible, career going than the poor winner does.

Since I belong to a church that suffered greatly from a schism started a couple of years ago when the National Episcopal Church named the Rev. Gene Robinson as its first openly gay bishop, I’m afraid I have to side with Sam-A. “Conservative” Christians who cherry-pick parts of their religion to excuse their prejudices… I have a difficult time understanding them.

Can’t believe I said that ON AN IDOL blog. No religion, no politcs … aren’t those the rules? And no name-calling, of course.

Lots of girls like to date a guy they perceive as a “bad boy” – but they usually wind up marrying someone a lot more safe.

And Sam-A, I also called Rickster Ricky once. I saw it as an endearment: he was highly offended, and let me know so.

True, Rickster… and Sam…. though I still to this day have a hard time understanding why the bad-boy, outrageous ways even mattered in the face of that incredible talent.

As far as the dress/hair/makeup, I thought he looked best when he did the casual dress, floppy hair, no makeup, boy-next-door look. But the elaborate costumes, hair and makeup were, to me, part of his ’show’ and part of what made him so good. He was the whole package… incredible voice and he truly owned the stage.

I remember the very first week, after he’d absolutely blown everyone else off the map, and Simon told the next person “It cahn’t be easy, having to follow that.” He was right. The others looked like high-school-talent-show amateurs next to him, and I’ll *never* really get why America couldn’t (and still can’t) let the talent matter more than anything else…

Ricky was not an term of endearment when I grew up. Grew to really despise it. Sorry.
