Cumulus Atlanta
Wendy Adams has been with Q100 for seven years. At some point, she started doing traffic for the Bert Show. Over time, her profile on the show had gradually been upgraded, especially since she was by far the youngest person on the crew and provided a different perspective from the others, who are now in their 30s and 40s.
“Early on, she was single, she was drinking and clubbing,” said Weiss, in an interview. “She’s now in a relationship and has grown out of that role.” But he still felt she had a place on the show.
UPDATE: Weiss posted his own note about her departure on his website. Read it here.
He said it wasn’t a performance issue, merely a budget cutting issue. Weiss had no control over her employment status since she was effectively a Q100 traffic reporter first, a Bert Show cast member second.
“I understand the business side of things but it doesn’t make it any easier,” he said. Unlike other shows, who are often told not to ever mention the person who was let go, he said he plans to address Wendy’s departure at least two or three times Tuesday on the show.
Over the years, what surprised me was the level of rancor toward her on this blog. Many fans of the Bert Show genuinely disliked Wendy. She also sounded a bit like the new cast member Kristin Klingshirn, who took over for Melissa Carter last year.
The Bert Show ratings remain very strong. It’s regularly the No. 2 show in the market, only behind V-103’s Frank & Wanda.
Based on Wendy’s most recent Tweets (@wendyradio), she didn’t know this was coming.
UPDATE on 6/19/12 at 7 a.m.
Weiss said he expects Cumulus will use the same person to do all traffic across multiple Cumulus radio stations.
“We’re missing her energy and her bubbly personality,” said Jenn Hobby this morning on air. “All the positivity she brings to the room. We’re going to miss her so much.”
“She’s destined for great things,” added Klingshirn.
UPDATE on June 25, 2012: Wendy posted an “open letter” to Facebook. Here it is in full:
To my Q100 and Bert Show family and our listeners:
To say it’s been a crazy past few days may be a bit of an understatement. My emotions have been overwhelming at times on both ends of the spectrum.I’m not going to lie, it’s scary to lose a job. My mind has been in a million directions; from shock, to wondering when and where I will find my next job, to thinking “wow, it’s nice to sleep in,” to “I know I’m going to be OK,” and then back to square one. With that array of emotions, it’s difficult to really put how I’m feeling into words. But here it goes.
It’s always in time of need, you see which people are truly there for you. I am overwhelmed by your outreach of support. I have seen and read every Facebook and Twitter post that you have left. Your supportive comments and well wishes have made me feel blessed. I want you to know how much I appreciate you letting me into your lives. Thank you for allowing me to share my life with you; to laugh, cry, involve you in my family drama, share with you my not-so-good relationships, and allow me to boast in my current one. (No, Billy Elliot still hasn’t proposed). Thank you for allowing me to really grow-up with you. It’s been a journey. And I feel like my journey is just beginning.
You may have heard stories before about “radio” people starting at a small station. They move from city to city, station to station looking for the next big opportunity. I have been fortunate enough to not go through that process. Thanks to Susquehanna and Cumulus for the opportunity to work and grow at one station for 7 years. I have been at Q100 since I was 19-years-old back in May of 2004 as a promotions intern. Who knew then that this promotions girl, would then turn in to a phone screener? Who knew that that phone screener would be allowed the occasional opportunity to be on air? Who knew this on-air phone screener would eventually turn in to a co-host at night with Adam-Bomb? And who knew that Bert Weiss, host of one of the best morning shows out there, would notice this night show co-host and her talent? Well, he did. I came in to take over the traffic position, with the hopes of more on-air opportunities with a show that I listened to and a show that I was a fan of. Who could have dreamt of more?
I would like to thank Bert for that opportunity of becoming more than just a traffic reporter. He gave me the chance to grow; to find my own radio personality. I was even given a computer in studio for my traffic reports, so that I was able to interact on every segment during the show. No other traffic reporter was given that opportunity. I was a true member of the Bert Show. Thank you to Bert for that opportunity and for all your guidance through the years. I feel blessed to have sat next to Melissa Carter, one of the strongest women I know. She was my Mama Melissa, always giving me advice. She taught me to be fearless; to share my opinions regardless of what others thought. Jeff has taught me to laugh at myself. We all have faults and things we’d rather people not know. I learned to embrace those things and was able to laugh at myself. He is like a big brother I’ve never had; he would pick on me, but would be the first to have my back. Jenn has taught me confidence and to be true to myself. Jenn has been a great role model for me. She’s my big sister. From her I’ve learned that what I share on the air about myself is important. There is always someone out there that is in the exact same place as I am. She also taught me: to be a great interviewer is to listen. That’s one piece of advice I will never forget. To Tracey, you are a rock star. You are one of the hardest working people I know. Thanks for listening to me and having my back when I’ve needed it. To Dylan, a huge thank you for giving me my first chance in radio. Without your belief in me and your advice, I wouldn’t be where I am today. To Adam Bomb, thank you for letting me be your co-host for 2 years. I’ve learned from you that radio is fun and is a great place for creative minds. You’ve helped me get to that next step with the Bert Show. To Rob Roberts, thank you for helping me to improve and to be the best I could be. To the rest of my Bert Show family: Kristin, Tommy, Carl, Natalie, Josh, Cassie and Marisa, thanks for being my second family.
Like I said before, losing a job is scary, but I’ve got a great second family. We’re all trying to make it in this economy. Companies are trying to make it in this economy too. Budget cuts happen; down-sizing happens. I will be OK. Thank you again for all of your supportive thoughts and well wishes! I’ll be sure to keep you updated on the next chapter in my life.

Best wishes for Wendy with whatever comes next. She came a long way with the Bert Show and I think she’ll do well with her future endeavors. It will hurt the Bert Show to no longer have a young 20-something member.

Agree with 123. Kristen is horrible. The Bert show continues to suck since the departure of Carter. I even find myself disliking Jen Hobbie, which I once thought was impossible. Jeff sobbing on mothers day was the nail in the coffin for me, Burt is the only interesting one in the bunch and clearly carries the show. There’s likely more to this story with Wendy, but who cares. NPR is more entertaining, looking forward to football so sports talk radio will become more interesting.

Wasn’t her biggest fan, but over the years, she’s definitely improved a lot. Dint think the level of vitriol was warranted on these blogs, but that’s life in the spotlight with the online haters. Hope she goes on to great career. No one in this economy needs to be cut, no matter how much you don’t like them.

I am so very sad that Wendy is gone. I loved her on The Bert Show so much and she fit right in with them. I really hate that Cumulus would fire Wendy because she so did not deserve it. She was so good on there. I am so sad about this. :’(

That Weiss said he had no control is just pushing it off.. if he wanted her there it would have happened, that she was under another departments budget could have been fixed in seconds. It’s just Burt letting someone else be the bad guy.

I never liked her and mostly thought she was embarrassing to the young 20s demographic. It is sad, though, that she’s losing her job in this economy, but I’m (kind-of) sure she’ll find a job in a different market. For a traffic girl, she had years of cast member experience. I think the “budget cut” issue is more of a “Christian Grey of Traffic” issue. So many listeners of The Bert Show LOVED him that Wendy’s traffic job was made redundant. They’ll probably patch in his traffic reporting like they did when she was on vacation.
Also, I love Kristin. She’s got a great spirit and a wonderful laugh. I also think she’s funny with her side conversations to Jeff. Hobby comes off insincere at times even though most people love her, and I think Kristin’s sincerity and humility really offers a nice contrast to Hobby’s elitist demeanor.

Totally bummed and disappointed by this announcement.
Moving to Atlanta just 3 years ago, I instantly fell for The Bert Show and connected with Wendy’s opinions from the perspective of a 20-something year old (me being in my mid-20’s). I do feel like Wendy’s credibility was often discredited by other members of the show I always ‘felt’ this exuding from their morning radio talk show.
She was always inspiring, entertaining, and I am a little disappointed with her exit and Kristen’s existing establishment.
We will miss you, Wendy! Keep your chin up and shoot for the stars!

Watch the dominos fall–first Wendy, next Jenn, then Jeff. The show is going through a major reorganization and change in vision. Bert will hire a bunch of Kristen clones, which could make for great or terrible radio (I predict terrible).

But I mean, man, what can you do? It is out of my control. Jeff: This [voice cracks] sucks. I’m mad. I mean really mad… Kristin: [What she wants to say is I hope the listeners don't push me off a bridge now that I'm staying. What she will say...] The Bert Show has been like a family since I moved to Atlanta. So welcoming. And Wendy is like a sister to me… Jenn Hobby: Ahem. [Glances over the script the interns or her PR team has written for her...] Wendy, I know God has a better plan for you. I’m so blessed to have known you and have you in my life. And now I turn it all back to ME, ME, ME.

A few times a week, the Bert Show is genuinely entertaining. However, the rest of the week they are talking about such idiotic or embarrassing or irrelevant topics that I can’t stand them. Of course, I’m on the older end of their audience, but both Kristen and Wendy are teenybopper / valley girl clones who come across as speaking on behalf of the entire female population yet remain shallow and unfunny. And Jeff, while often off-color, is one of the most clever members of the team. And I do like the way Bert’s intelligence and social awareness carries the show.

Wendy has long been the annoying little sister of the show. With guests & listeners confusing her and Kristin’s voice and the overwhelming response to Christian while she was gone, her firing doesn’t seem all that surprising. I too would like to see Jenn go next – has become really condescending towards other cast members & callers. Boring and needs to lighten up. Jeff cracks me up. Bert is narsisistic, but has his funny moments and keeps it interesting. Cumulus made the right move imo.

She got on my last nerve the way she went on and on about family issues, wondering over and over about how she might have depression or bipolar, but refuses to see a therapist. It’s pretty naive to think that a therapist is going to run tell her business to somebody…does she not realize that there’s a confidentiality requirement? I was kind of on the fence about her till that segment…then that was it for me. I can’t remember if that was before or after the I won’t vote for a woman for president debacle.

I hope when she updates her twitter profile to remove “Bert Show Radio Personality” that she also considers deleting “Lover of squishy/shiny things.” (What a deep thinker.) A year ago, she bragged about being “Daddy’s Little Girl” and said her father told her bf that he better not ever hurt his little girl. NOW, she says she was never close to him and is currently estranged. Which is it, Wendy?!! One of many examples why her firing is a great decision. Maybe I can now not switch channels when she talks. THANK YOU!!!

When Wendy went on her vacations last month and the Christian Grey traffic reader received rave reviews on Facebook and Twitter, later TBS removed the string of FB posts, right? I thought that was curious. Maybe that’s why Wendy wouldn’t take vacation days in the past? She may have suspected something such as this would happen…and it surely did. I don’t believe asking for a raise had anything to do with it; Cumulus can handle someone asking for a raise.

I think Wendy was the one absolutely true to herself and honest person on the show. For Bert to say he had NO control I think is B.S. Budget cuts really? I have a VERY close friend that works for Cumulus and if it was for money she would have been the LAST to let go considering the others salary. The Bert show always wants to be known for doing the “right” thing and helping others out, well Bert you totally did the opposite here. She worked harder than anyone on that show and made the least amount. I will NOT be listening to the show anymore. Wendy was done wrong and the Bert show will see what a mistake they made. In radio, EVERY listener counts, they truly lost a lot with this move. Wendy, I wish you the best and every thing happens for a reason ,l and you will find something much better!

I have to admit I felt sorry for Wendy whenever she would return from her vacations and Jenn would squeal, “Are you ENGAGED!?! I’m lookin’ for that ring finger!!! Bert IS the show. Everyone else is easily replaceable. Ever hear it when he’s not there? Very stilted and awkward without him. Jeff sure is funny, though! Kristin is gorgeous and genuine. Cracks me up when they talk about “having to talk for five-and-a-half hours.” They repeat segments so often and play that silly “name that tune” game with each other for a significant portion of the show. (Still not sure how that’s entertaining for listeners, but hoping it’ll be over soon.) Celebrity incarceration is also very stale. I DO like the show, though!

First, we have had scores of radio personalities in Atlanta that was probably more deserving of public criticism than q100’s Wendy. I remember when she was known as “Phone Hottie Wendy” before the traffic gig started. Back in the Myspace days, she would regularly communicate with fans and talk about it on air. As she became part of the TBS, criticism about her became quite hostile and intense..especially on this blog.
I’ll say that her on-air personality clearly didn’t endear her to many fans, and the fact that Bert, Jeff and the others would spend several minutes defending her. I think their defense of her made her more of a target of fans. It also seem to be at a point some years back that she really didn’t care what people thought of her.
Its also interesting that people have become so outraged by a voice over the radio, but, for the last several years, in a way she was a part of their lives, so it makes you wonder if all the anger toward Wendy is really about them and not her. What will they do now?
Its obvious that she had lots of issues as has been mentioned, but did she really deserve being pink-slipped without any notice? Certainly, Bert could’ve done something (it is the Bert show after all), What did Bert know and when did he know it? We’ll probably never know, and even though it could have been handled better, perhaps it was for the best.
Honestly…did I really enjoy her pronouncing Atlanta “Al-anna” after every traffic report?

The Bert Show needs some new energy – they need a fun, young, SMART female or male in their 20’s or early 30’s who is single. That kind of perspective could really liven up the show. Everyone being in a serious relationship is boring. Wendy was a sweet girl, but added nothing special to the show.

Just buy satellite radio. The musical chairs, “Elaine Zittac,” method of management is what needs to be fired.
The only station on the FM dial worth listening to was changed to a news only format last month, as if there’s no internet, no tv, etc.
Satellite is apparently the way to go. The management there has more value for their employees, something “low forehead mgmt incorporated” of Atlanta lack, and then some.
Some people can’t handle authority; they always overreach, swing their weight around. You reap what yoy sow, Boss; better do the right thing instead of enhancing your bonus by firing others…

The Bert Show became too politically correct. I like Bert and he carries the whole show. He will go really far in radio.
However, they really have turned the showed into a radio version of The View. Sometimes Jeff and Bert need to man up. They’ve let the women take over with a bunch of drama, noninteresting stories.

Didn’t she just go in to her bosses not too long ago and ask for a raise? Right. That, and discussing it on air, put her on The List. Poor girl. I made that mistake when I was young too. Never again. I will just quietly start interviewing. Good luck Wendy, I hope you find something soon.

The Bert Show desparately needs a early 20s, single guy, for some new energy on the show. They are slowly transitioning into an old peoples show about marriages and kids.
Ever notice that when Bert is on vacation that they run reruns of the show. They tried having Melissa and Jenn run the show a few times and it was absolutely horrible. I guess thats why its called The Bert Show. Everyone else on that show is totally replaceable. Actually South Side Steve wouldn’t be a bad addition either.

I don’t understand why people care to comment on a show they obviously don’t listen to or like. At any rate, I wasn’t a big fan of Wendy (she wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box), but she seemed sweet. And she obviously didn’t see this coming, so I hope she’s all right. I wish her the best, though I can’t say I’m sad to see her go.

It took a lot of time for me to warm up to Wendy. There’s an 8 year age gap, so naturally I didn’t find her too interesting, considering I had already been down that road. But, over the years, she seemed to mature and grow with the rest of the cast. Then, enter Kristin. She amplified my new-found enjoyment of Wendy. Kristin is awful. The cast is no longer cohesive, and for this, I haven’t listened in over 8 months. Shame on Cumulus for not looking at seniority when letting go of employees. And, shame on anyone for listening to Kristin laugh at herself, constantly, and act like she knows everything about pop culture (while never getting any of her lines right), and thinking she’s endearing. God willing, she’s next.
If I still listened, I’d be sorry to see you go, Wendy.

Wendy got on my nerves. Her immaturity was really annoying me. Especially lately. And the Wendy/Kristin teenie bopper ness is just over the top. Jeff Dauler keeps me listening. But Wendy’s droning on about her relationship with her father, spilling very intimate details of their struggle and his depression and mental illness–at the same time spurring off therapy because she doesn’t want a stranger spreading their issues and talking about them with others. WHILE SHE DRONES ON ABOUT THEM ON THE RADIO. Who is there left to tell?

I started off disliking Wendy…but she was extremely young and naive…but she’s grown up a bit and started doing a much better job as of late. Libtard Jen Hobby on the other hand is like listening to nails on a chalk board. Her whiny voice and I am woman hear me roar diatribe is horrible. Oh should I take him back, it’s Father’s Day after all… GET INTO THERAPY. Oh, no sorry, you don’t trust therapists. Give yourself the BIGGEST gift of your life and see a psychologist!”
This is pretty much how I feel exactly. I never hated her, but I just cannot understand how someone can be so distrustful of such a helpful service such as therapy. And if you’re already on air telling the entire listening audience all about your issues, what else is there to know? She needs serious help in the mental department.

I wonder how long Jenns new husband is going to put up with that royal beiotch? Just the number of social engagements that this woman participates in would have to drive a normal guy insane. By Hobby’s count she has about 145,754 CLOSE friends. It sounds like she spends 90% of her non working time catching up with these friends. Sorry hubby, your about number 7 down on the priority list, after her friends, her dog, her fame seeking, her dying grandma, her wine, her foods

What is all this talk about her great work ethic? If she is that wonderful and talented, trust me — Cumulus would’ve FOUND a spot for her somewhere in that mega-company. There is a reason Cumulus surprised her with the firing & told her to leave immediately. Cumulus sent her on vacation to test Christian, and the audience responded well. In radio & TV — AUDIENCE APPEAL is what matters. Nobody forced her to work the “split shift” TBS cast just can’t stop talking about.

Jenn is simply masterful at self-promotion. And, I suspect Grant is intoxicated by his newfound roles in appearing on HLN (thanks to Jenn) and being recognized when with her around ATL. Jenn is also on MetroMix and got Jeff a stint with HLN, and Bert appears on it now, too. She probably got Wendy the HS Bleachers comcast deal. @Jack Diamond Bert doesn’t like it when TBS cast gets reamed on the AJC blog. However, there is no other place to provide comments and feedback and be heard. TBS website should have a radio button-type survey so listeners can click to vote how much they like/dislike segments — especially repeating, ones such as celebrity incarceration (”We are all just SO competitive!!!) or “Throwback Throwdown,” where TBS cast screams and squeals (ouch) as they try to guess a song. I like it when they have deeper discussions about current events, which is why I listen.

Jenn is wise to praise HLN’s Nancy Grace, ESPN’s Erin Andrews, WXIA’s Jaye Watson, etc. so highly. Take a lesson: this is how you get more work. I am not dissing — just stating she can schmooze with the best. She also handpicked Wendy, who adored her, to mentor and advance to a spot on TBS cast. I challenge anyone to give me an example of when Wendy did not chime in & agree with Jenn…

Jenn takes pride in the ability to manipulate men into asking out a woman via text messages. Grant didn’t have a chance once she set her sights on him, and good for Jenn. When she met Bert at the bar 10 years ago, she obviously did a great job of selling herself to him, then he hired her. I truly wish I had the “political business acumen” that she has clearly displayed throughout the years. On the other hand…how do you ever know if you’re being played? Simply a means to an end or does she sincerely mean it when she compliments you?

Well, as a listener of TBS since the beginning, I have definitely seen the show evolve….but not entirely sure I like the direction it’s gone in. The early years with a younger Jenn, Melissa, Bert, Jeff, Crash and Phil Terrana made me leave urban radio and tune in, religiously, every morning. I couldn’t stand the addition of Wendy…I mean, my flesh used to crawl. I was soooo annoyed by her. I even once wrote and asked if she could be removed from the show. However, she has matured a lot since she first came to the show. I also HATE the addition of Kristin, which might have made me like Wendy a little bit more. In the past year, I found myself not really bothered by Wendy and began to feel bad that she would get bashed a lot. I think that Cumulus really should have let Kristin go. While I think she is probably a very nice person, she’s so….I don’t even know the words. I am annoyed how she alllwwwaayyys has a story and airs her family’s personal business…and poor Bart…I feel bad for the guy bc the public has developed such a perception of him….I wish Wendy the best of luck and hope that she finds something really soon! BTW, I had no idea how many people hated Jenn Hobby…I love her…but I don’t think she will be with TBS much longer….I think she wants tv, etc.

Wendy is sweet and funny–she added a lot to the show. But there is no reason to put down the other people on the show in order to support Wendy; and I don’t think she would want that. I like them all and greatly enjoy the show, but Wendy will certainly be missed. I wish Cumulus would reconsider. Sign her to be a Bert Show person, and put her under that budget (AND give her a raise)!

Everyone is way overthinking this.
1. The only thing that matters to broadcast media is ratings + demographics. If Wendy’s role did not support either of these in the right combination, then it makes business sense for them to cut her and would make no sense for Bert to re-hire her to TBS staff.
2. TBS has been in flux with supporting cast members far too long. I don’t care about Jenn’s new-found Christianity or Jeff’s ‘I’m divorced now, so I’m going to get healthy to cope with it’ issues. Kristin will always be a 3rd wheel. And please quit with the white 80’s rap guy.
Long story short, the days of Melissa’s insightfulness and great re-occuring segments like ‘Around the World Susie’ or ‘Paraonmal Invesigations’ are gone. Now it’s ‘call in give-away promos’ and an audio version of Jerry Springer.

Radio IS FAKE!! When a caller phones in about a “serious but weird issue”, thats actually not real. I know, I worked in it. ALL radio station’s HAVE to have fake callers who are given scripts to read over the phone. Most of the BS stuff is scripted, I’m sure they will disagree. Stop hating on Wendy, she was a good employee, worked a double shift. Everyone hates on her about her “daddy issues”, for all we know, she was probably told to create that for good ratings. Its just part of the radio world which is disappearing any way. She could have been saved for sure, but it is what it is. I hope she does well with whatever her future holds.
