Rush Limbaugh finished on top of the Talkers magazine Heavy Hundred for the sixth year in a row.

Despite a bout of controversy earlier this year that led to some advertisers bailing on him, Limbaugh remains on 600-plus stations and draws 15 million-plus listeners a week.

Check out the list here.

Three Georgia-based talk show hosts made the list. Topping it is Neal Boortz, at No. 13, who is retiring next January and replaced by Herman Cain. He’s heard locally on 95.5FM and AM750 News/Talk WSB. Between 2007 and 2012, his ranking has ranged from 9 to 14.

Clark Howard, heard locally on WSB, holds at 29 after cutting his hours back to two hours a day and now doing a daily show on HLN.

Rusty Humphries, now based out of Atlanta on WGST-AM, saw his ranking move from 32 to 20.

The rankings have no scientific basis. Rather, it’s the magazine’s editors who decide how the top 100 works, based in no particular order: courage, effort, impact, longevity, potential, ratings, recognition, revenue, service, talent and uniqueness.

(Sports talk will now have a separate list.)

The top 10
1. Rush Limbaugh (640/WGST-AM) Rank in 2011: 1
2. Sean Hannity (95.5FM and AM750 News/Talk WSB) Rank in 2011: 3
3. Michael Savage (WGST) Rank in 2011 Rank in 2011: 4
4. Ed Schultz (1010/WGUN-AM) Rank in 2011: 9 (His MSNBC talk show hosting duties helped him in the rankings)
5. Laura Ingraham (1160/WCFO-AM) Rank in 2011: 5
6. Dave Ramsey (WSB) Rank in 2011: 6
7. Mark Levin (WGST) Rank in 2011: 7
8. Thom Hartmann (WGUN) Rank in 2011: 8
9. Glenn Beck (WGST) – He falls from No. 3 last year after losing his Fox News show but reportedly was given a syndicated renewal worth $100 million over five years so life is still very very good for Beck.
10. Joe Madison (Sirius/XM) Rank in 2011: 10

Others who are heard in Atlanta with local (or national) radio home in parentheticals
12. Howard Stern (Sirius XM) Rank in 2011: 12
13. Neal Boortz (WSB) Rank in 2011: 11
14. Mike Gallagher (WGKA) Rank in 2011: 13
16. Jerry Doyle (WCFO) Rank in 2011: 16
17. Bill Handel (WSB) Rank in 2011: 18

29. Clark Howard (WSB) Rank in 2011: 29
33. Don Imus (WCFO) Rank in 2011: 26 (he’s been steadily slipping after getting as high as 7 in 2008)
35. Dennis Prager (WGKA-AM) Rank in 2011: 40
38. Randi Rhodes (1010/WGUN-AM) Rank in 2011: 41
45. Kim Komando (WSB) Rank in 2011: 39
58. Mike Huckabee (WGKA) NEW
63. Hugh Hewitt (WGKA) Rank in 2011: 66
69. Opie & Anthony (Sirius XM) Rank in 2011: 71
72. Terry Gross (WABE-FM) Rank in 2011: 76
92. Rev. Al Sharpton (WAOK-AM) NEW

Another 150 are listed in alphabetical order and includes Andy Dean (WSB), Rob Johnson (WGST-AM), Mike Malloy and Atlanta-based Eric Erickson (WSB)

Two Georgia-based talk show hosts dropped off the list from 2011: Allen Hunt, who decided to drop his syndicated talk show but remains on WSB on weekends, and Martha Zoller (formerly WDUN-AM), who decided to run for public office.

A quick look at this list and you have a good idea why the level of political discourse in this country is in such bad shape and continual decline.

This speaks to the IQ of the listeners and sadly our voters.

Ben is correct. Just looking at that list, you see the likes of Ed Schultz, Mike Malloy, and someone who can barely put 2 coherent sentences together, Al Sharpton, spewing hatred and violence towards Americans. Naturally their listeners are the least intelligent and a major part of the moocher mentality that has become prevalent since 2009. Sadly, it’s those type of people that put the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (that’s the White House for you lesser IQ folks) in power.

It is wasn’t for those like Rush and SeanH, I shudder to think where America would be. They speak the truth with passion and courage, and remind the much beleaguered conservatives that we have a voice, even though not at all in the mainstream network media or CNN. Ben’s comment would be sad if it weren’t so hilarious, it was only because of the mainstream media bias and uninformed unintelligent voters that our current office holder ever won even one term as the least qualified president in the history of America

@liberalefty, way to hold up the side! When you can’t think of an intelligent argument, just return to the tried (and tired) and true Dem playbook and call your opponent’s ra-a-a-acist!

One of the good guys passed away last night. Howie Chizek of WNIR in the Akron/Cleveland area hosted mid-days since 1974. WNIR and its predecessor WKNT was one of the first talk stations on the FM dial in the USA.

@liberalefty, Spoken like someone who has never bothered to actually listen to either Rush or Hannity. (BTW tuning in for five minutes once in a while does not count.) If you had bothered you would know that neither of them is racist. That is just a handy glob of unwarranted mud for you silly lefties to sling. Only others who also don’t listen will give it any credence at all.

Highlander nailed it–as soon as the argument goes against them, lefties will immediately resort to name calling. In this case liberalefty didn’t even wait that long, just launched into unjustified attacks on the conservative talk radio hosts, and the most childish attempt to emasculate all conservatives.

BTW, our feelings toward the president does not depend on his half black, half white racial heritage but rather on his radical socialism and completely inept performance in office. To call him an unqualified amateur is putting it mildly. His constant excuse that it is not his fault, he inherited all his problems stopped holding any water some time ago. He has done nothing to improve the situation and has only exacerbated the problems he inherited. His own party is turning on him. The last two votes on his budget proposals did not get even one vote from Republican OR Democrat. ZERO VOTES in support of him. Of course I’m sure you will tell us how they are ALL just racists.

As far as conservative radio talk show hosts, especially in the local aspect, Atlanta needs Kim “The Kimmer” Peterson back on its airwaves.

the first two comments here tell the story of left leaning whining; getting all worked up about the state of political discourse in this country when its conservatives fighting for what they believe in. then, calling middle american voters with jobs, who send their kids to public schools and pay taxes ignorant sheep. how sad

I was talking about people on both sides, not one side or the other. The people who rely on anyone on this list for their news—and FAR TOO MANY do just that—are the “ignorant sheep” as you called them.

I’m an independent who disagrees with several things this administration has done, but I’m still baffled as to where the “socialist” label from right-wing radio comes from. Can any of you who have claimed that Obama is a socialist, actually give examples to back up the claim? I’ll hang up and listen.

@ The Honest Mechanic – “The rich need to pay their fair share.” So, who gets to decide what fair is? You? The President? The Congress? Most producers will tell you what the government takes now is not fair especially when you consider the extent of waste and corruption and the fact that almost have of the population pays nothing while taking much. “To each according to his needs from each according to his ability” Sounds like our President to me.

In your own post, you said “almost have of the population pays nothing while taking much”. Sounds like you’re making your own determination as to what fair is. So, you can make the determination of what fair is and not be a socialist, but anyone else who does is a socialist? Sounds like you’re just repeating stuff you heard on talk radio without really understanding what’s being said.

Howie Chizek passed away? Holy cow! I used to listen to him when I was a student at Kent State. Howie was the king of local talk radio. Those who didn’t get a chance to listen to him online missed a great icon of Midwest radio.

As a socialist, I sure wish Obama were one. Unfortunately, he’s a moderate.

I know, I know, everyone calls him a liberal… that’s just because the discourse in society has moved such that Reagan would now be considered liberal. Truth is, he’s a moderate, he supports business just like every other recent occupant of the White House, and he’s hell-bent on compromise while his opponents want to treat the whole country like Sherman treated Georgia. As long as a Democrat is in the WH, they want to burn the country to the ground to “prove” that the liberals are bad governors. Terrible, isn’t it? And Rush, Hannity, etc.–they’ve said as much. There’s no such thing as “loyal opposition” anymore.

I’ll sigh and vote for him again–not that it will matter, as Romney will sweep the South (and not much else), but I sure wish we had a *real* liberal in the WH. At least Obama isn’t trying to turn our government into the Christian version of the Taliban, unlike many on the right.
