‘Idol’ bits: Bo Bice in Bremen June 22, suspects in Phillips’ pawn shop burglary arrested

bo-bice-02

It’s a nice slow news day in the world of “Idol” so here’s what I was able to scrounge up:

- The police arrested three suspects who used a stolen back hoe to break into Phillip Phillips’ dad’s pawn shop in Albany earlier this week:

18-year-old Quymeisha Wallace and 38-year-old George Ferguson appeared before Magistrate Judge Victoria Darrisaw Friday morning at the Dougherty County municipal complex.  Police arrested all three after serving search warrants at two homes yesterday. Stolen items from Albany Sporting Goods and Pawn Shop were found. (Source: Hollywood Reporter)

“They got a pile of jewelry, coins, guns, TVs, rod and reels. Just a lot of stuff,” Donnie Phillips told WALB in Albany. He said he sometimes sleeps in his shop with his gun. He was out of town to support his son, who was recuperating from kidney surgery.

- Bo Bice from season four, who now lives in Cumming, is going to perform next week in Bremen, GA, about 50 miles west of downtown off I-20.

Bice, who came in second season four, will be at Mill Town Music Hall at 1031 Alabama Ave. in Bremen on Friday, June 22, at 7 p.m., in time for my 43rd birthday! Tickets are $20 for reserved seating, $15 for general admission. The venue, which opened in February, holds 1,050 seats. Parking is free. Tickets can be had here.

The musician, whose sound evokes 70s Southern rock, opened up to me a few weeks ago about his alcohol problem and the joy of a new baby (No. 4!).

- Nicole Scherzinger, who felt fake in all her teary-eyed messiness on the first season of “US X Factor,” is now a judge on “X Factor UK,” replacing Kelly Rowland. Really? Why?

- Reuters reports that Ryan Seacrest is in the running to buy Dick Clark Productions, which produces “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and the American Music Awards. Clark passed away just a few weeks ago. Seacrest always considered Clark his role model and is often cited as his standard bearer.

This has nothing to do with “Idol,” but Jimmy Fallon does a funny “Evolution of Dad Dancing” in honor of Father’s Day:

First!
On previous PP thread, I put down some thoughts about “Rock of Ages”, which I liked because of Tom Cruise’s unexpectedly brave – and believable – performance as a rock star.
To Deirdre: I love unexpected airplane trips.
Also, re your comment “The Voice as already admitted to soliciting talent from local bars and failed music contract holders” – how very sad that sounds.

Watched “Bunheads” last Monday and decided to follow it for a while. Sutton Foster, retired Broadway star and two time Tony winner (I think) should do well in a TV-comedy. Loved the unexpected way the first show ended.

Sutton Foster won Tonys for Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes on Broadway. Very talented lady!

I guess that in the UK, as long as you’re beautiful, it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re a good judge.

If Ryan buys Dick Clark Productions would that make him Nigel’s boss?

Good to know Bo is working.

Deirdre:

Don’t forget “Falling Skies”. RoHo has a thread about it. But be careful what you say if you make it on here Monday – not sure if I’ll watch or save for Friday. I don’t think there’s anything else I watch on right now, so hopefully will be watching, but it’s hard to watch scary stuff just before bed! That’s why I always record “Walking Dead” for an earlier night time to watch.

“Lola Versus” is a “modern” (read: meandering) comedy about a soon-to-be 30-year-old in search of her true love: herself. Indie favorite Greta Gerwig stars as Lola, dumped three weeks before her wedding. Lots of tears and self-affirmation talk follow. Ms. Gerwig is cute as a button, but I kept looking at my watch as she took up with one loser after another.

I have to tape both Falling Skies and the season finale of The Killing. Won’t even attempt to see either of them until Friday or later.

I’ll be on a couple of times this weekend but then I’ll be taking a blog vacation for a bit.

My favorite movie opening this week: “Safety Not Guaranteed”. I love quirk, but it’s gotta be good quirk, not the predictable kind, like “Lola Verus”. In “Safety Not Guaranteed”, you don’t know what’s going to happen from one minute to the next. Fledgling magazine writer (Aubrey Plaza) is bait for an “inventor” (Mark Duplass) planing to go back in time to right a wrong. Is the guy insane or just out of his mind? Unconventional-looking leads charm and beguile. Quirk abounds, The good kind.

Deirdre, forgot to mention: Joel Kinnaman, from “The Killing”, costars in “Lola Versus”.

From the Phillips article: ” a non-Hispanic male” What the heck is that? That could be anything from A to Z, and why was it worded that way? Strange, never seen that before. That’s almost as bad as the articles after the Zimmerman/Martin thing in Miami that said, “White Hispanic”. LOL Good Grief!
Also, Deirdre, had to laugh at your comment about “beauty in the UK”. I spent a year there in 1994 and trust me, the “nons” outnumber the pretty ones. By quite a bit, actually! Why? I don’t know.

Hey Rodney, your headline says Bo’s playing Bremen on June 24th, and in the article you say he’ll be there on the 21st. His show is actually on Friday, June 22.

Interesting story in the WSJ yesterday, where Eric Felten wrote about a failed experiment conducted by The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. In February, the orchestra announced that “through the miracle of YouTube, it would let the public help choose a new, undiscovered artist to perform a concerto with the orchestra…Things got off to a rocky start. When the orchestra did its initial culling of the herd, instead of the 20 semifinalists it had hoped nto put forward for public judgment, it was only able to present eight. YouTube viewers narrowed that dow to four. But instead of picking a wnner, the PSO pulled the plug this week, determining that none of the young hopefuls were quite ready for Heinz Hall.

“Not only was it a disappointment for aspirng concert soloists, it was a small rebuke of the internet ethos.

More on Eric felten’s story:

“We live in an age of of democratic taste expressed through electronic means. Books, music, restaurants, hotels, plumbers – all are scored and rated online. The lamentation that ‘everyone’s a critic’ has never been more true. Orchestras, no less than pizza joints, have been under pressure to use Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to promote and engage.

“But promote and engage whom? When ( PSO music director Manfred) Honeck taved that people ‘from all over the world’ would be able ‘to vote for a soloist to perform with our orchestra’, he overlooked the fact hat those voters don’t have the same stake in the performance as members of the paying audience. Put aside questions of expertise in making artistic judgments. More thm a few of the electronic boters seem to have made their choices for reasons not exactly performance related.

“The voting public were soon posting comments on the PSO website explaining its choices.
‘My choice was a student of mine in elementary school’
‘I have watched her as a child starting to play the harp at First Baptist’
‘The young man who shovels my walks’
and so on.

“Whether it’sa matter of piling up five-star reviews on Amazon or securing the collective approbation of Yelp users, online ratings are all to often a measure not of product quality but of the promoters’ skill at Internet marketing and social-media manipulation”.

Hmmm. Didn’t I read that Jessica had posted 200 of her performances of YouTube???

Let’s keep in mind that a lot of the artists that we know and love today got started in local bars and small venues. Do the names The Beatles (Hamburg, Germany bars), Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, etc., etc. etc. ring a bell? :D

Good for Bo. Hope he’s doing well health-wise.

RoHo, I think you clipped the Hollywood Reporter article a bit short. You said the police have 3 suspects and the article excerpt mentions 3, but only 2 of the scumbags, …er, suspects, are named.

Deirdre

All suspects have been arrested and arraigned, I believe.

There isn’t anything sad about bar bands…most are competent and some are pretty darned good. One thing we tend to completely ignore is that ALL these shows give singers exposure and exposure is the ONLY way to move forward. And backward.

It was mostly the “failed music contract holders” that sounded so sad to me … i know several of these people, and how hurt they were, so hurt that they gave up on a career in music altogether.

Happy Birthday, Dearly Beloved Sir Paul! And many, many more to come! I’ve adored this man from early 20’s to 70 – don’t see it stopping now!

Back to the “performing in a bar” discussion, the incredibly handsome and plentifully talented Michael Johns performs in a bar when he comes to ATL. I hope some day he’ll move on to bigger, better, and well deserved things!

K&CF: Hope you got to check in on “Falling Skies” – very good season opener last night. Don’t worry, Deirdre – no discussion until you’ve watched it. As you said probably Fri – we’ll talk next Monday.

Oh, Mercedes: I saw “Prometheus” yesterday – actually thought it was pretty good – kept my interest. A bit of a let down in the last few mins, but overall it kept my attention. And Noomi Repace was terrific. (couldn’t help be wonder at the end – what was she gonna eat on that long journey in the alien space ship??? Afraid I’m a bit of a “detail nut”)

In honor of Sir Paul’s birthday, the theme of the NYT’s crossword puzzle is Beatles songs, with lyrics as clues.
Of course you’ll know them all:
1970 song with the lyric “Whisper words of wisdom” (7 letters)
1975 “Isn’t he a bit like you and me?” (10)
1969 “Once there was a way to get back homeward” (14)
1965 “These are words that go together well” (8)
1965 “Think of what you’re saying” (14)
1968 “We all want to change the world” (10)
1968 “Remember to let her into your heart” (7)

I knew the answers right away, to all, but one. I had to google it and discovered I’D NEVER HEARD THAT SONG!! Take a guess, Sam-A!

Sam-A

I thought of that, but would she really trust that lying sack of robotism???

I don’t know if you watch “Falling Skies” but there was a very similar scene in last night’s show to one in “Prometheus”. Very! Which was similar to several scenes in “X-Files” back in the day.

Sam-A

June 18th, 2012
9:33 am

“Let It Be” (whisper words of wisdom, Let It Be)
“Nowhere Man” (Sitting in your nowhere land)
“Golden Slumbers” (Sleep little darling, don’t you cry, and I will sing a lullaby)
“Michelle” (Ma belle, sont les moi que vont tres bien ensemble)
“We Can Work It Out” (Live is very short, and there’s no time)
“Revolution” (Well, you know, we all want to change the world)
“Hey Jude” (Don’t be afraid, take a sad song and make it better)

Which song had you not known?

As for “sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble”, apparently this really riles the French who’ve been complaining since 1965 that although “ils vont bien ensemble, c’est pas correct quand meme”.

Woodpapppy: Hope he’s recovered enough by then! Kidney surgery is pretty darn serious. My Mother had kidney stone surgery back in the olden days (60’s) and was in the hospital for a week, and in bed another week at home.

And, other than a couple of John’s weirder songs, and George’s sitar songs, I pretty much know every word of every Beatles song. The White Album is my failing place. A few songs I don’t like, so why bother to listen to/learn them!

And, an oops!@ Golden Slumbers is actually, “sleep little darling, do not cry, and I will sing a lullaby.

One of the papers had an update this morning on Phillip. He said that he is excited to be doing Washington DC. (Never been there before). Said he was doing great after the first few days. Said he was lying around recuperating and writing some new songs.

As for the Beatles I loved them but sure never learned all the words to their songs. Heck there were two songs on the list I don’t think I’ve ever heard.

Sam-A

Wood: “Golden Slumbers” is probably one – back in the 60’s, it was considered an “album cut” and not played on the AM radio stations. Played a lot in later years on Z93 (rest in peace) and other rock/classic FM stations. It was the “opening act” for “Carry That Weight” , “The End” and “Her Majesty” – run together into one fantastic song:

“I never give you my pillow, I only send you my invitations
Boy, you’re gonna carry that weight, carry that weight a long time”: “Carry That Weight”

“Oh, yeah, come on, are you gonna be in my dreams
tonight
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make”: “The End”

“Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl, but she doesn’t have a lot to say: “Her Majesty”
Some day I’m gonna make her mine”

For awhile, either Z93 or 96 Rock ended the day at 6:00 with “The End”. I sure miss the good old days of FM Radio!

My fingers still feel tight, I’m always trying to stretch them and I have lost strength in that hand, good thing is that it is the left hand! I will not complain though! (Aimee Copeland)

Yes, Aimee C can make just about everyone thankful! What a horrible situation. It’s hard to believe she has refused pain meds and is using meditation. I can’t imagine any meditation deep enough to sustain her thru this mess. I’d be screaming for the morphine.

Guess we’re just pretty much stuck with stiff, achy hands/wrists now. Oh, well, I get along pretty good considering mine is my right hand. hasn’t affected typing and most stuff. I just can’t lean with my weight on it, or as I said, turn jar lids, etc. very well. I do stretching and rubbing my wrist a lot. I can feel the screw heads – ugh. Haven’t been thru an airport detecter yet – hmmm, wonder how that will go?
